We are centered in Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist. We are a welcoming family, striving to see Christ in all and responding to the needs of the members of our parish and community. Called to act in faith, hope and love we seek to become a visible presence of Christ in the world.
2 Reflecting on God s Word Lent is an invitation to journey more deeply into the heart of God. What God asks of Abram is a willingness to trust that God will lead him. Abram is called from the very beginning to place his trust in the Lord and in the Lord s promises. We are told that Abram is seventy years old at the time he goes forth. I remember someone remarking, Imagine coming in the house and saying to your wife, Honey, we have to pack up and go I know not where. We are told simply: Abram went as the LORD directed him (Genesis 12:4a). Abram s faith translates into trust that God is leading him. Jesus brought the three apostles up a high mountain. Mountains often served as the meeting place of God and the prophets Moses and Elijah come to mind. When Jesus and the three reach their destination, Jesus is transformed before them, face and clothes shining. Suddenly Moses and Elijah are talking with him. You can understand Peter wanting to stay there. But this is not journey s end. That will happen on a hill outside Jerusalem. For now they hear words meant also for us this day: This is my beloved Son... listen to him (Matthew 17:5). We are asked to journey with Jesus for forty days sometimes it may be into the desert of testing, sometimes up a mountain for a moment of blinding clarity. In both places we know Jesus as the beloved Son who trusts in the Father s will. Lent invites us to make that same journey into trusting the Father. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. The Lord told Abram that he would become a great nation. In fact later God would change Abram s name to Abraham who would be regarded as the father of God s people. In the reading from the Letter of Paul to Timothy, St. Paul reminds the disciples of being holy as they follow the Savior Jesus Christ, who destroyed death and bring eternal life. Matthew s Gospel tells of the TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD, which shows to PETER, JAMES AND JOHN the revelation of God in Jesus. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. All these readings invite us to turn away from sin and believe in the GOOD NEWS during this Lenten Journey. This Wednesday we will have a chance to be transfigured in our hearts and souls as we leave the Light on for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confession from 6 pm until 9 pm. AS I WRITE THESE words today, I do so with a heavy heart. I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR CONSOLING WORDS, CARDS, PRAYERS, VISITS, and other things ON BEHALF OF MY MOTHER NORMA, WHO PASSED AWAY FEBRUARY 24 TH. My family and I have been overwhelmed with the great outpouring of kindness. If I neglected thanking any of you personally, please accept it as said gratefully now. I pray that MY MOTHER NORMA MAY REST IN PEACE FOREVER. Also I pray that Lord will change and enlighten each of us during this special season of Lent. God bless. Fr. Al Z+ Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will be at 7pm on the following Fridays of Lent: March 17, 31, at 7pm. 3 What is R.C.I.A. As Catholics we all remember those special occasions that we celebrate in the church with our families. Our families get together for the baptism of our child/children, and after the baptism we all gather together to celebrate the child having been baptized. We celebrate the reception of 1 st Holy Communion and Confirmation and we may even remember our own celebration of these sacraments. These times are truly blessed and are indeed important events to celebrate in our lives. This is the process in which we become full participants in the Catholic faith, we become fully initiated. Some Catholics have a different experience of being initiated into the Catholic faith, it is called R.C.I.A. (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults). This is a discernment process in which non Catholic adults, who wish to become Catholic, fully enter into the faith. They receive the sacraments of initiation as we did, but they receive them all at once at the Easter Vigil each year. We, as a faith community, celebrate their coming to faith and welcome them into the Catholic Church. Just as we celebrated our Baptism, 1 st Communion, and Confirmation, we celebrate with these individuals as they go through the process of becoming fully initiated Catholics. Our parish community participates in the R.C.I.A. process with these new members; we pray with them, we learn with them, we journey with them, and we welcome them with our hospitality and generosity. We can become more familiar with who they are as we see them each week at church. As a parish, we need to introduce ourselves and get to know who they are. We welcome any adult who may be interested in finding out more about the Catholic Faith. This does not mean that you necessarily have to become Catholic, but you are interested in knowing more about the Catholic Religion. Those adults who are: un-baptized baptized in another religion baptized Catholic, but have not received any other sacraments (1 st Communion, Confirmation) are welcome to enter into the initiation process. May God continue to bless our parish community as we promote the Kingdom of Heaven. Living Life to the Fullest St. Paul says that "For freedom Christ has set us free," yet so often we are held bound by our fears and anxieties. We've forgotten who we are and Whose we are and so have let insecurity and doubt box us in. Father Joe Freedy will be speaking about our deepest identity as beloved sons and daughters of God and how receiving that identity more deeply leads to greater freedom. You re invited to join us on Thursday, March 16, 1:30 pm Our Lady of Joy, Father Marchukonis Hall Please direct questions to or Light refreshments will be served! The parents are invited and encouraged to attend the closing which includes Adoration and Benediction in the church as our Holy Father Pope Francis encourages all Catholics to join in this prayerful time. Prayer: For young people preparing for Confirmation, that they may grow in faith and be enabled to see the world with the eyes of faith. Parish Blessing: God, our loving Father, these young people come before you open to receiving the fullness of the Gifts of your Spirit. Send your gifts in abundance that they may be an instrument in realizing the fullness of your Kingdom. We ask this blessing through Christ our Lord. Chimbote Spaghetti Dinner Once again we are planning our annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for the poor of our parish and the poor of Chimbote, Peru on March 12. Diocesan Toll-Free Number for Abuse Response: OTHER NEWS Lenten Enrichment Series at St. Januarius The VIA DOLOROSA (The Way of the Cross) is not the only path for us to choose to walk. Sessions will be offered at 1pm for those who would like an afternoon time. Father John will also offer a Mass on Tuesday evenings at 7pm for those who would like to make an extra effort at attending Mass during Lent. The homily at the evening Mass will be reflective of this spiritual journey. Please call the Rectory, if interested, as handouts will be used each week SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT PAGE FIVE
