Johnston, PROLIFE MONUMENT FUND DRIVE The Pro-Life Monument fund drive is now at 45% of our goal which is $4,500. We thank those who have given and showed their support. We are planning October for a dedication ceremony, wouldn t this be a perfect time as our Catholic Church celebrates Respect Life Month in October? We still have a ways to go, we are asking for your support, both large donations of $100 plus or small donations of $5 or $10. Our goal is also to show support from our community in number as well as dollars. Pro-Life Committee POPE S UNIVERSAL INTENTION FOR MAY: Christians in Africa That Christians in Africa, in imitation of the Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace. 4 THE TRAVELING CRIB The crib will be in the Hall for the month of May to collect baby items and maternity clothes for clients receiving services from Catholic Charities Pregnancy support. By donating, you are supporting women faced with an unplanned pregnancy, who are saying yes to new life. DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING IN LIFE? Attention all Catholic young men ages 13-18! Do you know where you are going in life? The Lord Jesus has a great plan for you! You are invited to attend Quo Vadis Days camp to spend some time with other young men your age looking at the Lord s call in your life while having a great time. Quo Vadis Days is sponsored by the Office of Vocations and is led by priests and seminarians of the archdiocese. Quo Vadis Days will be held from June at Camp Howard. The cost is only $50*. Our next monthly Rosary will be the Weekend of Saturday May 26th and Sunday May 27th. The Rosary will be immediately following the Saturday 5pm and Sunday 8am and 10:30am Masses and immediately before the Sunday Spanish Language Mass. All are welcome to join us and, as usual, we will have free copies of How to pray the Rosary and Rosary Beads or finger Rosaries for anyone that needs them. We hope you can join us. This month s Rosary will be dedicated to all Mothers. Catholic Charities 2017 Annual Campaign Theme: Finding the face of Jesus in each other Whenever I meet someone in need, it is really Jesus in his most distressing disguise. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Mother Teresa came to value the poor not because of what they could do or produce, not because of their job or credentials, but because they radiated the image of God. Catholic Charities and its member agencies strive to see the face of Christ in each of the 100,000 individuals we serve across Western Oregon each year. But, we are only able to do this because of YOU and the care, concern, and generosity for our communities and our neighbors that flows from your heart. Your gift to the Catholic Charities 2017 Annual Campaign allows us to provide meaningful help to the most vulnerable in our community. Whether it s a program serving people who are homeless in Portland, reuniting broken families in Salem, helping pregnant mothers living in poverty to get back on their feet in Eugene, protecting the dignity of refugees and immigrants statewide, or providing emergency assistance to thousands, our Church s charitable agencies represent all of us in service to others. 5 God s Generosity God is a god of abundance, not a god of scarcity. Jesus reveals to us God's abundance when he offers so much bread to the people that there are twelve large baskets with leftover scraps (see John 6:5-15), and when he makes his disciples catch so many fish that their boat nearly sinks (Luke 5:1-7). God doesn't give us just enough. God gives us more than enough: more bread and fish than we can eat, more love than we dared to ask for. God is a generous giver, but we can only see and enjoy God's generosity when we love God with all of our hearts, minds, and strength. As long as we say, "I will love you, God, but first show me your generosity," we will remain distant from God and unable to experience what God truly wants to give us, which is life and life in abundance. 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY Religious Education News We had a fabulous year in our Sunday religious education classes but they have come to an end for this school year. We would like to thank our parents and students for coming and learning more about God. Special thanks to our volunteer catechists who engaged their students in the learning process and who modeled their faith and shared it so willingly. Our parish is blessed to have such wonderful volunteers. Registration for next year s classes will begin on June 4th. Forms will be available at both church doors and you can drop them by the church office with your payment. Our program runs from September to May. Have a wonderful summer! WE RE GOING ON A WILDERNESS ADVENTURE Vacation Bible School is a one week program for children and youth from July 10th through July 14th. We are still gathering our adult and teen helpers for this faith-filled week of fun and games. If you are interesting in being part of the adventure, please contact Mary Ellen in the church office by phone or at re@stcyrilparish.org. Participant registration forms are by both church doors for our July program which will be half days in the morning from 9:00 to noon. We hope you choose to come explore the sacraments and saints this summer! Confirmation Weekend This is the weekend that our high school youth are getting Confirmed in the Catholic Church. On Sunday, May 21st at the 5:00 p.m. Mass students from St. Francis Catholic Church and St. Cyril will gather together to celebrate the Eucharist and to be recognized as full adults in the Catholic Faith. We welcome them and support the process of faith exploration that has brought them to this sacrament. Congratulations! It's K of C 2017 Scholarship Time The Knights of Columbus Scholarship Committee has posted Applications at both entrances of the Church and at the Parish Office. We will grant all Scholarships by June 18th after accepting applications beginning on April 16th and closing no later than June 9th. Prior recipients are eligible for consideration.
