Look for purple bins to hold e loaves of bread. Faer Ceelli suffered two tragedies: The fir was a fire in 1905 at deroyed St. Michael s rectory and everying in it including his valuable library. He was enveloped in flames, badly burned and spent several mons in e hospital. He never did fully recover and resigned from active parish work to become chaplain at St. Vincent Hospital. A second tragedy took his life. In 1916, he was killed while driving a jitney at was crushed between two reet cars. It was Faer Ceelli who built e present St. Michael Church, and he is said to have done some of e physical labor himself. The parish owes is heroic paor an immense debt of gratitude! He came close to literally giving his life for his flock when e rectory burned and ose burns caused him to have to retired and die not long afterwards. DECEASED PRIESTS MONDAY Fr. Jerome Wespe, OSB 1954 TUESDAY Fr. Alexander Ceelli 1916 WEDNESDAY Fr. James Brady, CSC 2005 THURSDAY Fr. Arur J. Sullivan 1959 SATURDAY Fr. James Hallqui, OFM 1979 SUNDAY Fr. John Ryan, OP 1980 Faer Ceelli, was paor of St. Michael before Faer Balera came. From our centennial book e following is said about him: Faer Ceelli was born in Sanspolcro near Fiesole in Tuscany on September 26, He was ordained May 30, 1863, and shortly became a professor of moral philosophy at e Greek College at Grottaferrata. In 1883 at e earne solicitation of Archbishop Ireland of St. Paul, Minnesota, he came to e United States and for 12 year was professor at St. Thomas Theological Seminary in St. Paul and for five years held a similar position at e Pontifical College Josephinum of e Propagation of Fai in Columbus, Ohio. Later as a gue of Archbishop Chriie, he visited Portland and resolved to ay here to minier to e Italian people. The Archbishop appointed him paor of St. Michael on May 2, EDUCATION NEWS THE RCIA (RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS) ON WEDNESDAY EVENINGS: This group includes ose praying, udying and discerning wheer to join e Caolic Church is next Eaer time. Stay home if sick! Faer Mayo - Paor passing into eternity, on e fea of a man, like him, so very close to e Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Juan Diego, in e middle of e city he loved, whose citizens ill smile at e mention of his name, usually quick to share a ory of an encounter wi him. It is in is sanctuary at, on October 2, 1979, Pope John Paul II embraced him and called him e preacher to e world only nine weeks before his dea, and it is here he was interred on December 13, 1979, in e crypt below e main altar, where he awaits e resurrection of e dead wi two oer servants of God -- Pierre Toussaint and Cardinal Terence Cooke -- in company of previous archbishops and bishops of New York. (Ju so you know, ere is also space for Cardinal Egan and a space-and-ahalf for me ) What a blessing to have wi us today so many of his family, friends, admirers, and ose we may call clients, who look to him ill wi love and gratitude, eager for e wisdom he so effectively imparted, always in e name of Chri Jesus, whom St. Paul reminds us today, is e very wisdom of God. As members of a supernatural family, e Church, we gaer to ank God for him, eager to swap ories about a particular episode, a witty comment, a word of advice, a particular quote, his hypnotic eyes, his sooing yet challenging voice, or an occasion when we were wi him. How good at we would have wi us e Bishop of his beloved home diocese of Peoria, e Mo Reverend Daniel Jenky, CSC,, and his successor as national director of e Society for e Propagation of e Fai, Monsignor Kozar. HOMILY ABOUT BISHOP SHEEN On e Occasion of e 30 Anniversary of Dea of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in Saint Patrick s Caedral in New York, New York on December 9, 2009 by Archbishop Dolan. Eminent Cardinals & broer bishops, broer pries & deacons, consecrated women & men religious, broers &siers all in Chri Jesus: Praised be Jesus Chri for e life, teaching, and example of Fulton John Sheen! Welcome to is caedral so dear to his heart! How appropriate at we would gaer for is greate of all prayers, e Holy Sacrifice of e Mass, e very heart of his life, which he celebrated so faifully every day of his sixty years of priesood, on is irtie anniversary of his Would at we could return to at innocence and simplicity extolled by e Maer in is evening s gospel, as we gratefully recall liening to him on e radio or watching him on TV as children or you, a man who, while indeed clever and wise, ill realized he was at his be when but a child in e arms of his blessed moer, or on his knees for an hour before e Real Presence of e Way, e Tru, and e Life, magnetic eyes closed, and renowned voice reduced to a sigh. It was a damp winter day in 1973 when I was walking rough St. Peter s Square, en a seminarian at e Nor American College, only to see a small but excited crowd near e obelisk. Over I went only to see in e middle of e dozens of excited people himself, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Among e handshakes, flashbulbs, and autographs, someone shouted, What are you doing in Rome, Archbishop Sheen? I ju came from an audience wi Pope Paul VI, he replied. What did e Holy Faer say to you? inquired anoer in e crowd. Archbishop

6 Sheen blushed a bit and replied, The Holy Faer looked at me, took my hand, and said, Fulton Sheen, you will have a high place in heaven. W hat did you say back? peered anoer. Well responded our man wi at familiar sparkle and grin, I replied, Your Holiness, would you mind making at an infallible atement? Which I propose to you is e key message of Fulton J. Sheen: He wanted to get to heaven; he wanted to bring e world wi him. During is Year for Pries, Pope Benedict XVI has suggeed at we reflect on e life of e patron saint of pries, St. John Vianney, e Curé of Ars. Remember e ory of Faer Vianney s arrival in Ars? He got lo in e hills getting ere, only to come across a little fellow on e pa. Little boy, asked e Curé, do you know how to get to Ars? Sure, e child replied. I live ere. Well, remarked e Curé, I tell you what: You show me how to get to Ars, and I ll show you how to get to heaven. Voilá, Fulton J. Sheen. All of his philosophy and eology, all of his radio and TV, his avalanche of books and articles, his tapes, retreats, and conferences all for one purpose: to help us discover e purpose of life -- eternal union wi God. As he was fond of saying, he d give up all his degrees, his agregé, his honorary doctorates and awards, his Emmy and e high ratings, as long as he could cling to e ird Q & A from e Baltimore Catechism he had learned from Sier Alexene in second grade at St. Mary s grade school in El Paso, Illinois. Why did God make you? God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in is world, and to be happy wi Him forever in e next. As he would have read from St. Auguine in e Divine Office on e very day he died, God has promised humanity divinity, mortals immortality, sinners mercy, e poor glory. There it is, folks: e righteousness, sanctification and redemp-tion spoken of by St. Paul in is evening s Liturgy of e Word. The fir time I was able to go on pilgrimage to e Holy Land, I asked ree renowned scripture scholars at The Caolic University of America to recommend what ey considered to e be book on Jesus. Each one responded immediately, Fulton Sheen s Life of Chri. When asked why his TV show got higher ratings an Milton Berle s, Bishop Sheen answered, Because I have better writers: Matew, Mark, Luke and John. The Life of Chri, e gospels e person and message of Jesus wi his voice Fulton J. Sheen gave us e ory of Jesus, e greate ory ever told, e way e ained glass windows of e medieval caedrals, or e brush rokes of a Raphael, a Fra Angelico, a Giotto once did. teaching, ill healing, ill leading us to heaven, because, you see, e incarnation was ill going on: The Word was ill taking flesh; God was ill becoming man so is Jesus is as alive in His Church, so faifully handing-on His teaching, as He was on e shores of e Sea of Galilee; So is Jesus is as tenderly available now in e arms of His Moer Mary, to whom he had such a deep devotion, as He was in e crib of Belehem; So is Jesus is as present in e Mo Blessed Sacrament, before whom He knelt in prayer for an hour every day of His priely life, as He was at e La Supper; So is Jesus is as discoverable in e faces of e poor, hungry, and suffering of e world as He was so wretched on e cross. So is Jesus is ill inviting, as He does in is evening s gospel, Come to me come to me Come to me for peace, for meaning, for purpose, for salvation. Come wi me forever to heaven! And no one, my broers and siers, more effectively extended at sacred invitation in is land an Fulton J. Sheen. May Jesus Chri be praised! A FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVE Families participating in e 5:00 P.M. Vigil Mass on Chrimas Eve are invited to bring wi em from home eir creche or nativity set figurine of e Baby Jesus. Children and families will bring ese figurines up at e end of Mass for a special blessing. All coming are welcome to participate. MASSES FOR CHRISTMAS Chrimas Eve, December 24 5:00 P.M.
