5 SOME HUMOR The Picnic A Jewish Rabbi a a Caolic Priest met at e town's annual 4 of July picnic. Old fries, ey began eir usual banter. "This baked ham is really delicious," e priest teased e rabbi. "You really ought to try it. I know it's against your religion, but I can't uersta why such a woerful food should be forbidden! You don't know what you're missing. You just haven't lived until you've tried Mrs. Hall's prized Virginia Baked Ham. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down a try it?" The rabbi looked at e priest wi a big grin, a said, "At your wedding." The Usher An elderly woman walked into e local country church. The friely usher greeted her at e door a helped her up e flight of steps. "Where would you like to sit?" he asked politely. "The front row please," she answered. "You really don't want to do at," e usher said, "The pastor is really boring." "Do you happen to know who I am?" e woman inquired. "No," he said. "I'm e pastor's moer," she replied iignantly. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. "No," she said. Good," he answered. ey struck up a conversation. The twenty-dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over e country. "I've had a pretty good life," e twenty proclaimed. "Why I've been to Las Vegas a Atlantic City, e finest restaurants in New York, performances on Broadway, a even a cruise to e Caribbean." "Wow!" said e one-dollar bill. "You've really had an exciting life!" "So tell me," says e twenty, "where have you been roughout your lifetime?" The one dollar bill replies, "Oh, I've been to e Meodist Church, e Baptist Church, a e Caolic Church." The twenty-dollar bill interrupts, "What's a church?" Goat for Dinner The young couple invited eir elderly pastor for Suay dinner. While ey were in e kitchen preparing e meal, e minister asked eir son what ey were having. "Goat," e little boy replied. "Goat?" replied e startled man of e clo, "Are you sure about at?" "Yep," said e youngster. "I heard Dad saying to Mom, 'Today is just as good as any to have e old goat for dinner." NEW CARDINALS Show a Tell A kiergarten teacher gave her class a "show a tell" assignment. Each student was instructed to bring in an object to share wi e class at represented eir religion. The first student got up in front of e class a said, "My name is Benjamin a I am Jewish a is is a Star of David." The seco student got up in front of e class a said, "My name is Mary. I'm a Caolic a is is a Rosary." The ird student got in up front of e class a said, "My name is Tommy. I am Baptist, a is is a casserole." A prelate wi e mi of Ratzinger a e heart of Roncalli by John L Allen, Jr. February 8, 2010 National Caolic Reporter While ere are uoubtedly many ways to capture what s notewory about Italian Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, President of e Pontifical Council for Culture, here s one from my experience just is week. The Best Way To Pray A priest, a minister a a guru sat discussing e best positions for prayer, while a telephone repairman worked nearby. "Kneeling is definitely e best way to pray," e priest said. "No," said e minister. "I get e best results staing wi my has outstretched to Heaven." "You're bo wrong," e guru said. "The most effective prayer position is lying down on e floor." The repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey, fellas," he interrupted. "The best prayin' I ever did was when I was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole." The Twenty a e One A well-worn one-dollar bill a a similarly distressed twenty-dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired. As ey moved along e conveyor belt to be burned, Tuesday morning, I was on my way to e Paul VI Audience Hall to listen to a talk by Ravasi at a conference organized by e Pontifical Council for Heal Care Workers. I bumped into a priest frie in e Vatican, who, it s fair to say, would probably be seen as falling on e conservative side of many church debates. When I told him I was headed to see Ravasi, his eyes lit up. He s always giving speeches, he said, but he always has someing interesting to say. Later at day, I lunched wi a lay church-watcher in Rome, who conventionally would be regarded as at least somewhat liberal. When I mentioned I had spent part of e morning listening to Ravasi, she too was animated.

6 He s amazing brilliant, but wi an incredible ability to speak to real people, she said. In oer words, Ravasi, 67, is one of ose rare birds who somehow manages to transce e normal left/right divides. Perhaps it s because he s a Biblical expert, a hence usually manages to take a topic back to its eological a spiritual roots, to a point before ideological spin takes over; perhaps it s because he s a popular essayist in secular Italian newspapers, a knows how to reach a widely diverse audience. Whatever e case, a sou-bite way of making e point is at, at his best, Ravasi seems to have bo e mi of Ratzinger a e heart of Roncalli. That is, he exudes e compassion, openness to e world, a basic optimism of Pope John XXIII, as well as e intellectual lucidity a comma of Christian tradition of Benedict XVI. Given all at, Ravasi sometimes seems like e E.F Hutton of e current crop of senior Vatican officials when he talks, people listen. His subject on Tuesday morning was Pope John Paul II s 1984 document Salvifici Doloris, On e Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, e anniversary of which is part of e motive for e Council for Heal Care Workers gaering Feb Ravasi opened wi a premise, which he expressed as e symbolicity of pain. By at, Ravasi meant at pain is more an a physical or emotional experience, but in some ways it symbolizes what is essential to e human coition our limits, our finitude, even our guilt. Pain, Ravasi said, is our identity card as a creature in a fallen world. (In a vintage touch, Ravasi wasn t content simply wi asserting at on e basis of e Bible or Caolic teaching. He also cited a secular auority, in is case Susan Sontag a her 1978 classic Illness as Metaphor. Throughout e speech, Ravasi s allusions caromed from e Berlin Papyrus to Saul Bellow to Dostoyevsky.) Ravasi said he inteed to paint a verbal diptych, consisting of two images. The first concerned pain as e primary source of a crisis of sense, of meaning. It s e reaction of e doctor in Camus The Plague, Ravasi said, who insisted at he could never believe in a God who could permit such suffering. In at sense, Ravasi said, illness a suffering is e bulwark of aeism. Unsurprisingly, is line of ought led Ravasi to dwell at leng on e Biblical book of Job, perhaps e treatise par excellence in scripture on e mystery of human suffering. Among oer points, Ravasi noted at Job never seems as miserable as when his so-called fries try to justify his agony in terms of some hidden sin. That insight led Ravasi to quote e famous quip of Kierkegaard: Job could put up wi everying, until e eologians showed up to explain it to him. The seco panel of e diptych concerned e revelation of e meaning of suffering in God, particularly e Christology of suffering. Ravasi stressed ree separate movements in Christ s encounter wi human pain: e way he drew close to e sick; e way he entered into human suffering; a finally, his transformation of it rough his dea a resurrection. In e e, Ravasi argued, e Christology of suffering was best expressed by e French Caolic poet Paul Claudel, who said at Christ did not come to explain our suffering but to fill it wi his presence. To drive e point home, Ravasi told a story of a well-known Italian aeist, a writer named Ennio Flaiano who auored some of Fellini s screenplays. (Ravasi said he knew Flaiano s wife, since bo of em hail from Lombardy.) Though Flaiano never talked about it, he had a daughter who had been born wi a serious brain disorder, a whom he loved deeply. When he died, Ravasi said, an unfinished work was fou among his papers it wasn t clear wheer he meant it as a screenplay or a novel. In eier case, e premise of e work is at Christ returns to ear today, a is quickly swamped by TV cameras wanting to catch him in action healing e sick. He becomes annoyed, a seeks refuge on a semi-hidden side street. At e e of e street, he sees a faer wi his obviously suffering daughter. Christ approaches em, a just as he is about to lay has on e girl to heal her, e faer says: I don t want you to heal her. What I want is for you to love her. Christ s response is, Truly, at is what I can do for her. Ravasi s point was at is ferociously anti-clerical aeist noneeless grasped what is essential about e Christian uerstaing of suffering: God doesn t necessarily eliminate our pain, but loves us in a rough at pain. Of course, is wasn t a hard-hitting policy address, but in terms of an engaging a inspiring presentation of a fuamental element of e Christian message, it more or less brought e house down. That s what makes Ravasi sta out a at s also why his expected elevation to e College of Cardinals in e next consistory is, at least potentially, interesting in terms of e future of e church.

7 FINANCE COUNCIL ST MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 21 MEETING Present: Pastor Fr. James Mayo, Dave McDermott, Ryan Courtney, Dan Dziuba, Erik Dennis, Jay Johnson, a Council Secretary Bud Caro. Our Offertory Collections continue to more or less track e Budget a Bequests have exceeded Budget. The Time, Talent & Treasure returns include 20 new parishioners a 4 new fries of e Parish. Faer said he plans on depositing $400,000 of e bequest from e $500,000 gift from e estate of Maybelle Clark Macdonald in e Long Term Investment account a e balance in e Maintenance Account a some dollars for Masses for her soul a a 8-day vigil light each week for 50 years. Submitted: Bud Caro, Secretary Pastor s Comments: Faer said at ere is considerable parish interest in obtaining a gra-type piano for liturgy celebrations. An appropriate instrument could cost $30,000 a would be useful in e future in our new a upgraded facilities. The existing electronic piano would be used for choir practice a children s programs. The parish musicians believe at ey can raise half e cost in e form of a Challenge Grant which would require at e Parish raise e oer half. The Council suggested at Faer fi out if ere is sufficient interest in e Parish for a special donation. A $2,500 bid was received to caulk e seams in e Four Avenue ramp. The Council agreed at is was out of line a suggested Faer ask for volunteers. The Council continued to discuss a win-win solution to fu raising for e Restoration Project a for e Archbishop s Eowment Fu.
