A SAINT Saint José María Rubio y Peralta San José María Rubio y Peralta is a little saint however, perhaps a saint after e heart of Pope Francis. St. Jose Maria was a Jesuit who loved e poor. He was acclaimed by his Bishop on e day of his dea in Madrid, in 1929, as e apostle of Madrid. An anecdote from his life. Faer Rubio was a famed confessor. The locals used to queue, having to wait for several hours, in order to be confessed by e Faer Rubio. While hearing confessions one day, a lady came and told him of a man who had to confess soon, as he was dying. That evening, Faer Rubio went to visit e dying man, following e directions e woman had given him. Fr. Rubio had to go to e ird floor wiout a lift. When he finally arrived at e apartment, he knocked and asked for e gentleman. "It's me" e gentleman said, "but I ink at someone has played a practical joke on you, as you see I'm in perfect heal. Come in, man! Have a drink and relax after you have had to climb so many stairs." Entering e room, Fr. Rubio noticed a portrait on e wall. While e man he came to see served him a drink, Fr. Rubio told him at e woman in e portrait was e lady who visited him and sent him. The host laughed and said at he must be mistaken since at lady was his moer and she died some years ago. Then, e gentleman said; "Look, as long as you are here, I would like to make my confession because it has been years since I even entered a church - is way your journey will not have been in vain". WORLD YOUTH DAY As a sign of parish support to our college students, e Pastoral Council and Faer Mayo are helping one student and Fr. Maximo to attend World You Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, wi Pope Francis is coming July. Faer Mayo received e following letter from a student we are helping expressing her anks. Dear Church of St. Michael e Archangel, My name is Cirra Halter and I am a freshman psychology major at Portland State University. I came to Portland from my home town of Mount Angel wi e intention of attending St. Michael s for Mass every Sunday - but not doing much more an at. Thank God for e Caolic community and Newman Center up here for not letting at happen! Since September, I have grown tremendously in my fai and my zeal for e Eucharist. My grow has inspired me to ink big picture and live like a saint, going out to spread e Gospel. If I had to pick one word to sum up my year so far, it would be radical. So naturally, when I found out about World You Day, I knew is was someing God wanted me to do. Experiencing my fai in a universal context would be empowering, enriching and,of course, fun! That being said, when I saw e price tag attached to e flyers, I wasn t sure if I would be able to go. I would like to take is opportunity to ank all e people of St. Michael s in earnest for eir generosity. Your money will be taking me on an adventure I never dreamed I would be embarking on and I m so incredibly grateful for at. The community I have come to be a part of in Portland is unlike any community I ve ever experienced one at truly cares for each and every person, bo bodily and spiritually. Again, I ank you all for your humble, giving hearts and I will be sure to offer my prayer intentions for you when I attend e Mass celebrated by our Holy Faer in Rio de Janeiro. After making his confession at night, he died. Pray for us, Saint Jose Maria, at we may be made wory of e promises of Christ. If you can't feed a hundred people, en feed just one.! Blessed Moer Teresa of Calcutta

5 CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN? This Pentecost, being e celebration of e birday of e Church, might be time to reflect a bit on what means to be Caolic, what it means when we say we have e fullness of revelation among Christian and oer churches. Monsignor Patrick Brennan, Rector of Saint Mary s Caedral, publishes a column entitled Word from e Pastor in his bulletin. The following article appeared a few weeks back. I ought it good to share wi you and received Msgr. Brennan s permission to do so. Faer Mayo - Pastor What does it mean to be a Caolic Christian and not a Protestant Christian? In is time of e new evangelization, I find is an important question. The new evangelization is mean to stir into flame e fai at we have received, to come to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our Baptism, and to inspire us to spread e good news. But is is e good news generic; at is, believe in Jesus and live e Gospel? Or is it someing more specific; at is, live your Caolic fai and attract oers to it? The answer is probably a little of bo since we ar Caolic and Christians. But does e Caolic part of e equation really get its due? We live in ecumenical times. We value all oer Christian denominations, and Vatican II reaffirmed at each of ose denominations contains elements of tru. But Vatican II also warned against an indifferentism at would see all denominations equally as good. As Caolics, we believe e fullness of God s revelation is present in e Caolic Church. So what distinguishes our Caolic fai from e oers? The differences are clearly visible if we compare e interiors of a Caolic Church and a Baptist Church. When you enter a Caolic Church, you see a holy water font at e door, e interior is colored by stained glass windows, ere are statues and pictures of e saints, ere is a tabernacle wi a vigil light, a prominent altar and a crucifix wi e suffering Christ. Throughout, ere is e smell of incense. Now, enter a typical Baptist Church. There may be a small table for a naltar wi a Bible on it. The sanctuary will have a prominent pulpit for preaching. There may be eater seats wit cup holders, stage lights, and a prominent sound system. These physical characteristics highlight deeper eological differences between Caolics and Protestants. The Caolic imagination says at created realities can reflect and image e divine, taht God is disclosed in nature, art and symbol. This view is based on e Incarnation, at God is close to us and at Jesus became one wi us. Classical Protestantism would see ings differently, at God is more transcendent, distant, and at nature is fallen and corrupt it cannot image God. Protestant eology stresses Redemption over Incarnation (us, e question, Are you saved? ), and grace covers over our sins (while not removing em), allowing for salvation. Given e two views, I ink I ll choose Caolic. Human nature is damaged by original sin, but e image of God remains, say Fr. Thomas Rausch in his excellent book Being Caolic in a Culture of Choice. Humanity, in al lits concreteness, is e bearer of e divine. In short, Caolicism offers a more optimisic view of human nature and e world which God loves and to which God sent his Son. This is our fai. This is e fai of e Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan CATHOLICISM This 10- week series hosted by Fr. Robert Barron nd continues Wednesday, May 22, at 7 P.M. in e Conference Room. This week s program is The Indispensable Men - Peter, Paul & e Missionary Adventure. Contact Bob Grist at bobgrist@hotmail.com or Gary Haven at ghaven@earlink.net for information. FATHER JAMES HERRERA June 8 at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary s Caedral in NW Portland, our own Deacon James Herrera will be ordained a priest forever of Jesus Christ by Archbishop Sample. Seven oer deacons will also be ordained. June 8, at our 4:30 P.M. Vigil Mass, Faer James st will celebrate his 1 Mass here wi a reception to follow. Please try to come and wish him a happy and blessed ministry. CONGRATULATIONS! To Ben and Katie (McGinley) Petersen, married is Saturday. May eir marriage be a holy and loving one all eir days!
