Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in Why a new English translation of e Mass? On First Sunday of Advent, a new English translation of e Eucharist will be introduced in all English-speaking countries. The language of e Mass of e Roman Rite is Latin, however, e Second Vatican Council allowed local languages to be used. Thus e Mass was translated into many languages. The original Latin remains e same, but a new translation into English has been completed. The main reason for a new translation is at e current translation was done quickly. The international commission (ICEL) which did e translation recognized at it would have to revisit e translation later and refine it. The meod of translating it used is called dynamic equivalency. This translates e overall meaning wiout necessarily translating every wo or concept. However, is meod lost most of e scriptural references as well as e poetic richness of e Latin text. In 2001, e Holy See (Vatican) issued a new document calling for a new translation at followed e Latin more closely. In addition, in 1969, when e first translation was done, ere was no previous experience of translating Latin into liturgical Forty years of experience and learning have aided translators in eir task. The second reason for a new Missal is at Blessed John Paul II canonized so many new saints at ese needed to be included. This new Latin edition meant at a new English edition of e missal also had be published. This was seen as e ideal time to introduce e new English translation. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in What will change in e new translation of e Mass? Since e new Missal introduces a new translation of e whole Mass, almost very prayer has changed, from e responses of e people to e prayers of e priest, especially, e central prayer of e Mass, e Eucharistic Prayer. Oer changes will be e chant-prayers we sing togeer, such as e Glory to God, e Holy, Holy, Holy, e Memorial Acclamation, and e dialogues between priest and people. Since ese are new translations, ere are new musical compositions at choirs, song leaders and instrumentalists will have to learn. Furer inserts will examine some of e new translations of e oer parts of e Mass, such as e Creed and various responses of e people. One prayer at does not change is e Our Faer. One response at remains unchanged is Amen.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in What are e benefits of e new translation of e Mass? First, it must be pointed out at no translation is perfect, yet is new translation of e Mass will bring some improvements. The new translation will offer an improved translation, especially of e Collect (Opening) Prayer, e Prayer over e Offerings and e Prayer after Communion. There will be a richer and more prayerful expression of ese Latin prayers. The Scriptural references will stand out more clearly, for e Scriptures inspire so much of our liturgy. There will be an enriched eological vocabulary at will help to enrich our understanding of e mystery at we are celebrating. The new translation will express a more humble attitude towas God on e part of e people and a spirit of wonder and awe in e presence of God. The new translation will use a unique style of language and expression at takes us out of ourselves and draws us into e sacred, e transcendent and e divine. (Caolic Bishops of England and Wales, Pastoral Letter, 29 May, 2011) Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - And wi your Spirit The most notable change in e new translation of e Mass will be e response: And wi your spirit. Now we say: And also wi you. While e first meaning of is dialogue between e priest and people is to acknowledge e presence of Christ among em as ey gaer in Christ s name, mention of e Spirit is now missing. The greetings of e Mass are taken from Saint Paul s letters. In em Saint Paul acknowledges e active role of e Spirit in e forming e Christian community. It is e Holy Spirit who makes Christ present in e lives of each believer, as well as in e Body of Christ, e assembled Church. The wo Spirit also refers to e unique role of e priest who stands in e place of Christ, e Head of e Church and who has received e Spirit of oination. Thus e absence of e Holy Spirit in e 1974 English translation of e Mass is seen as a major omission. In addition, e change to is response also brings e English translation into conformity wi e oer language groups at form e one, holy, Caolic Church. This reminds us at e wo caolic means universal. We are one Church formed by e one Spirit to profess one fai in e one Lo even ough we confess at one fai in many languages.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - The Nicene Creed There will be a number of changes in e Nicene Creed. Like e Apostles Creed it will begin wi e singular, I believe raer an We believe. The I makes e profession of fai personal for each believer. The Creed will use a more eological language, us one in being wi e Faer will become consubstantial wi e Faer. In a Creed precise language is important to express our fai in Jesus, e Son of God, and his relationship to e Faer. For many generations Christians debated who Christ was. The Nicene Creed, which dates from e 4 Century, is e Church s official declaration of is fai at Christ is equally God wi e Faer and e Spirit. Born of e Virgin Mary becomes was incarnate of e Virgin Mary. This change reminds us at while Christ is indeed a human being like us, he also pre-existed as e eternal Son of God. The wos, was born does not adequately convey is. Was incarnate emphasizes bo e humanity and divinity of Christ and e work of e Holy Spirit. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - The Apostles Creed In 1972, Canada received special permission to use e Apostles Creed along wi e Nicene Creed in e Mass. Now is permission is extended to e whole Church. For is reason an official translation of e Apostles Creed has been approved in which ere are a few minor changes in its woing. The most notable is a return to an earlier version of e Creed in which we said: he descended into hell. Anoer change is at like e Nicene Creed all will bow at e wos: who was conceived by e Holy Spirit, born of e Virgin Mary.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - My sacrifice and yours After he washes his hands, e priest invites all to pray. In e past e priest referred to our sacrifice, and at is what it is, e sacrifice of all present, but e Latin text has my sacrifice and yours. In keeping wi Caolic teaching e Sacrifice of e Mass is one, and all present offer a single sacrifice. The new translation reminds us of two realities. The first is at e Sacrifice of e Mass is not just e offering of e priest but of all e people of God. The second is at while we are e one Body of Christ, nevereless, each one, as a member of at Body, is offering a sacrifice. Each baptised member is invited to unite eir personal offering to at of Christ. The many sacrifices of all present are made one in Christ by e fact at we invited to unite em to Christ rough e action of e priest, who roughout e Eucharist voices our many prayers, unites em into one and so offers one prayer and sacrifice of praise and anksgiving to God in e name of all. Thus e new translation invites into e mystery of our incorporation into e Sacrifice of Christ and e necessity of e conscious and voluntary offering of our individual lives to God rough and in and wi Christ. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - For you and for many Formerly e priest said at e Blood of Christ was shed for all. Now he will say for many. The wos now follow e Latin text exactly and what Jesus actually said. However, e meaning remains e same: Christ died for all and offers salvation to all people. In English e wo many may not convey e sense of all as well as oer languages do. It might be easier to understand is if we ink of e wo multitude. In Hebrew one part can imply e whole; us we speak of e arm or hand of God working mighty deeds. The use of many by Jesus also has overtones in e prophecies in Isaiah ; ; and 52.10, where e prophet makes a contrast between one and many e one Suffering Servant who bears e sins of many. We may understand is eologically in e light of Saint Paul s Letter to e Romans when he says at rough one person salvation has come to all. In addition, for many reminds us at while all are called, each person is free to respond or not.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - Enter under my roof Just before receiving Communion we repeat e wos of e centurion at we are not wory at Christ should come to us. Now we will use a translation at is closer to e wos of scripture: Lo, I am not wory at you should enter under my roof, but only say e wo and my soul shall be healed. The priest s invitation will also change, as he says: Behold e Lamb of God, behold him who takes away e sins of e world. Blessed are ose called to e supper of e Lamb. Through e priest s Invitation to Communion we express our fai in e healing power of Christ and approach Jesus wi e same humility as e centurion. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - Chalice of my Blood There was a lot of debate on how to translate e wo calix. Chalice is a direct translation of e Latin wo; however, almost all Bible versions use e wo cup, which is why e current translation uses e wo cup in e Institution Narrative (Wos of Consecration). In e new translation, e use of a more sacred language was desired in oer to create a more reverent atmosphere for our worship. For is reason e wo chalice will be used. Thus we will hear: take is, all of you, and drink from it, for is is e Chalice of my Blood. However, e use of e wo cup will be retained in e Memorial Acclamation: When we eat is Bread and drink is Cup, we proclaim your Dea, O Lo, until you come again.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - The Memorial Acclamation The Memorial Acclamation is e people s profession of e central tru of our fai e Paschal Mystery. It is is Paschal Mystery at we are celebrating in e Eucharist. The wos of e acclamation have been changed. One acclamation will be lost, e Christ has died. While is has been e most popular of e Memorial Acclamations, it was not in e Latin Mass. It was an original text exclusive to While e stronger acclamations in English tend to be in e i person, all of e Latin acclamations are in e second person, addressed to Christ. For is reason e Congregation for Divine Worship decided to exclude it from e English text of e Eucharist. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - Attitude Introducing a new English translation will present some challenges. Some may remember e change from Latin to In some ways e present change may be more difficult. When e first change came we spoke a different language at reminded us of e change. Now we are using e same language, and our prayer patterns are firmly established after 40 years bo consciously and unconsciously in our minds and hearts. Now we have to be more conscious of what we are saying and not operate on automatic pilot. Change is difficult; however, fai in God and our mission in e Church can make it a buen of love. We can also use is opportunity to deepen our understanding and participation in e Eucharist, e Sacrament at Christ left us as e Memorial of his Passion, Dea and Resurrection. Thus e Eucharist is a gift from Christ in oer at wi him we may give praise to God e Faer and continue his work of salvation in e world. The Eucharist invites us to open our hearts and lives to e transforming power of Christ rough his Holy Spirit, at we who receive his Body and Blood may be transformed more and more into e image of Christ for e world.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in What is e Revised General Instruction? The General Instruction accompanies e Missal (book of prayers) and contains e instructions for e priest, deacon, ministers and people concerning e celebration of e Eucharist. It governs e actions, postures and gestures of e Mass, as well as offering a eological and spiritual understanding of e Mass. Thus it is an important help and guide in preparing e parish celebration of e Eucharist, so at all may participate in a conscious, full and active way in e supreme prayer of e Church. The revised edition of e General Instruction is e 5 edition of is document. For e people of e parish e General Instruction reminds em at ey gaer to form one body, to hear e wo of God, to join in prayer and song, to offer e sacrifice of Christ togeer and in union wi e priest, to participate togeer at e Lo s table, and to be sent out to do good works, while praising and blessing God. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The Revised General Instruction- Silence, Reflection and Singing The most important changes concern e inner attitude and external actions of ose who celebrate. The new edition of e General Instruction places renewed emphasis on e role of silence, listening and singing at Mass. These are important elements at make fruitful our participation. Since ey fall under e control of e priest or in some cases e musicians, all need to observe em for e good of oers. The main purpose of e Eucharist is to pray and encounter God among us in Christ and rough e agency of e Holy Spirit. The Eucharist is not primarily what we do, but what God does among us. We must make room for God to act. For if we do not give God e opportunity to speak and act, e liturgy will not be productive. Silent prayer, reflecting on what we have hea, formulating our prayer intentions and articulating our anks to God are just as important as e prayers, acclamations and hymns at we say and sing togeer as a community. If we truly wish to listen to God s Wo proclaimed, en we must ponder it for a minute before we make our response. Only en can our response be genuine. The main task of e Eucharist is to give anks and glory wi Christ to e Faer. Singing from e heart is one way we do is. The General Instruction reminds us at singing at all celebrations of e Eucharist, even weekdays, but especially Sundays, is an important and indispensable element of e Eucharist.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The Revised General Instruction- Unity of Posture In our day and age we must admit at we are individualists. For is reason Baptism and e Eucharist call us to conversion, for we are to become one body, one spirit in Christ (EP III). The General Instruction offers a catechesis on e importance of unity in prayer and posture. It reminds us at we are one body in Christ; erefore, all signs of individualism must be avoided. The General Instruction recognizes at our unity is most evident in our external actions during Mass. The GIRM also instructs e people to stand before e priest begins e Prayer over e Offerings (Gifts). Thus e people will now stand immediately after e priest says, Pray, broers and sisters... and before ey respond, May e Lo accept e sacrifice at your hands... Anoer change is at people are to make a sign of reverence when approaching to receive Communion. In Canada, is will be a bow. The admonition about unity of posture is important in is context. A genuflection in e aisle is not made at is time. One never genuflects in a procession. There is also a safety issue, e person behind may not see and stop in time. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The Revised General Instruction - Bows and Genuflections The GIRM offers a more precise definition of e reverence given to e Altar. All people who pass in front of e Altar make a profound bow, which is a slight bowing of e body from e waist. The GIRM also reminds us at a genuflection to e Tabernacle is made at e beginning and at e end of Mass (when arriving and departing e Church). However, during e Mass, e reverence of bowing is directed to e Altar and not to e Tabernacle. The reason is at once Mass begins, e Altar, which symbolizes Christ and was anointed at its consecration, is e centre of our focus and e sacrificial action of e Sacrament of e Lo s Supper. It is on is Altar at e sacrifice of e Mass will be celebrated and e bread and wine will be consecrated to become e Body and Blood of Christ. Thus during e Mass, Christ will become present on e Altar. The General Instruction also states at a genuflection is make to e unveiled Cross on Good Friday.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The Revised General Instruction- Ministers at e Eucharist The General Instruction makes a few changes concerning e oained and lay ministers at e Eucharist. 1) The Lectionary is no longer carried in e Procession, but is placed on e Ambo (lectern) before Mass begins. Only e Book of e Gospels is carried in Procession by e Deacon, or in his absence, e Lector, and is placed flat on e Altar. 2) Only a deacon, as e assistant to e priest, sits next to him at Mass; servers are to sit in a separate place. This is to highlight at only one person, e priest, represents Christ e Head and presides over e assembly at prayer. Even when lay people lead prayer, ey do not use e presidential chair. 3) Extraoinary ministers of Communion only come to e Altar at Communion time. They no longer help e priest and deacon break e bread or purify e sacred vessels after Communion. 4) The psalmist is encouraged to proclaim e Psalm from e Ambo for it is taken from e Wo of God. 5) Provision should be made for musicians to receive Communion during e celebration. 6) Except for e Passion, no reading should be divided among several Lectors. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The Revised General Instruction - The Priest The General Instruction offers many instructions to e priest. 1) When celebrating wi a congregation e priest leads e Introductory Rite and Liturgy of e Wo from e chair. 2) When e priest adds comments or adapts e introductions given in e missal, ey must be very brief and to e point, and ey should preserve e sense given in e missal. 3) The priest is reminded of e importance of silence at e introduction of e Mass, after inviting e people to pray, after e Readings and Homily and after Communion. 4) A Homily must be given on Sundays and Holy Days. 5) The normal person to give e Homily is e priest-celebrant, if a deacon or anoer priest gives e Homily, he must participate in e whole celebration. 6) The Sign of Peace is to be given only to ose nearby. If ere are people in e sanctuary, ey come to e Altar to exchange e peace wi e priest, who normally does not leave e Altar. 7) The prayers of preparation roughout e Mass are to be recited inaudibly by e priest. 8) The collection is not placed on or near e Altar, but away from e Altar, in a separate place.

Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The Revised General Instruction- The Eucharist and Communion The General Instruction emphasizes ree important aspects of e Eucharist: a) e Sacrifice of e Cross at is perpetuated in e memorial of e Paschal Meal, b) e covenant of God at is renewed in e Communion of e Lo s Body and Blood, and c) e pledge of e Eucharist as e Banquet of God s Kingdom. Since e Eucharistic Celebration is e Paschal Banquet of e Lo s Supper, it is desirable at in keeping wi e Lo s command, his Body and Blood should be received as spiritual food by e Faiful who are properly disposed. The GIRM reminds all at Communion under bo kinds is most desirable and is a fuller sign of e sacrificial character of e Eucharistic Banquet. To make is more evident, e faiful should receive Communion from Hosts consecrated at e Mass. Since Communion is a divine gift, we do not take Communion, but receive Communion from a priest, deacon or minister of Communion. In e dioceses of Canada, e faiful communicate standing, but before receiving Holy Communion, ey should make a simple bow of e head. However, if ey kneel, ey should not be denied Holy Communion. When receiving Holy Communion on e tongue ey reverently join eir hands; when receiving Holy Communion in e hand, ey reverently place one hand over e oer, and ey consume e consecrated Host immediately upon receiving it. Archdiocese of Kingston to introduce e 5 edition of e General Instruction of e Roman Missal and e 3 edition of e Roman Missal along wi e new translation of e Mass in The New Translation - The Dismissal At a recent Synod of Bishops, one of e recommendations was to strengen e sense of mission at flows from e Celebration of e Eucharist. In response to is request, Pope Benedict XVI added new dismissals at help to communicate task and life at must flow from e Eucharist. In addition to e standa, Go for, e Mass is ended, we find: Go and announce e Gospel of e Lo; or Go in peace, glorifying e Lo by your life. To paraphrase Saint Augustine, we receive e Body of Christ in oer to be e Body of Christ for e world.
