Whil th olst rmaining structurs in th Villag at from th lat 19 th Cntury, th Villag is bttr nown for its outstaning collction of historic builings construct in th post-victorian ra. Th Villag s architctural lgacy ows much to th wor of Fran Lloy Wright whos association with th Mison ara is wll ocumnt. Two of his most famous wors, th Pw Hous an th First Unitarian Mting Hous, ar locat within th Villag. Th Pw Hous is a prototyp for Wright s Usonian signs, which us prfabricat itms for construction. Th hous, construct in 1940, was sign aroun th natural faturs of its La Mnota shorlin sit. Th Unitarian Mting hous was construct by Marshall Erman btwn August 1949 an August Wright s initial stimat for th projct was $60,000; bis cam in btwn $350,000 an $700,000. Marshall Erman, who was just starting out as a local contractor, offr to o th job for $102,000. A tax crit is a much strongr incntiv than a tax uction in that th crit amount is uct irctly from th iniviual s stat incom tax bill (not on taxabl incom) on a ollar for ollar basis. Th rport also mntion a thir collction of builings, incluing th Vtrans Hospital Complx, as potntially bing ligibl for listing on th National Rgistr of Historic Placs. Th Shorwoo Historic District was crtifi by th Wisconsin Historical Socity on Novmbr 29, 2002, an th Collg Hills Historic District was crtifi on Dcmbr 9, Both istricts ar in th Stat an National Rgistr of Historic Placs. In th absnc of such an orinanc, any list sit, structur or istrict - without furthr signation as a Stat or national lanmar - is not automatically protct from molition or rical altrnation.
