Knnho, the famous Home Rule leader, ths afternoon turned the polce staton upsde down. The cause for hs trouble was unque qute worthy of Kunho at hs legslatve best. The fun started when Kanho marched nto the staton wth a ploce of watermelon and a Chnaman. Kanho explaned that he had bought two peces of melon from ths Chnaman at the fsh market. When he proceeded to eat them, however, he found that the melon juce staned hs fngers n a suspcous manner. The melon was panted, he sad, and for ths reason he had refused to pay for t. The Chnese sad that he had poured strawberry syrup over the melon, as he lked t flavored n that way and as he had ntended the peces for hs own consumpton. He had told Kanho that these peces were not for sale but te statesman had been so enamored wth the red and luscous aspect of the frut that, he had nssted on gettng t. That they have been stealng over the border by the thousands s a well known fact to the authortes. Commssoner Sargent has authentc advce that there are over 4000 Japanese close to the Mexcan border at the present tme watchng for a chance to cross the lne nto the Unted States. The large number of Japanese comng n wth drect passports from Japan s Bomewhat of a surprse to the mmgraton offcers at San Francsco. t was thought at frst that the Japanese government was comng some sort of a trck, but a further examnaton of the papers showed the fact that they were qute old. t s strctly wthn the law for the Japanese government to ssue drect passports to the manland, but n the natural course of events they would he presented wthn a lmted lme after ther date of ssuance, hut n the cases of the ancent dated passports that have come to lght the mmgraton offcers are wonderng where the holders have been all ths tme. The Japanese government has assured the Unted States that t would ssue no more passports to the man land drect and t s on ths assurance that the mmgraton offcals are wonderng over the old papers that are be ng presented at dfferent ponts on the coast. Strct examnaton of the pa pers show them to be genune, but n every nstance they have been dated pror to the tme that the Japanese government decded not to let ts people go to the Unted States. t s now clamed that there are a number of Japanese on the coast dong a good busness n rentng out pass ports to Japanese n Hawa, who use the passports to pass the mmgraton nspectors at San Francsco and Seatle aud are then returned to the owners org-na- to be sold agan.
