At least the creative juices are flowig ad some great classical music i the backgroud sets the scee for the followig. I welcome back to the workat-had R\W\ Richard Brewer (Waye) ad R\W\ Richard Trescott (Livigsto) who will be the District Coordiators for their respective Districts i the ew Wester Figer Lakes Regio. Shortly, O/S/Y, Allegay ad Steube Districts will be added to the list. I thak our DDGM, R\W\ George Foeher, for ivitig me to the Jauary meetig of the Moroe District s ad Wardes Associatio where we had a iformal presetatio of the ew Program. Oe of the items discussed was the importace of the Box of Remembrace ad the lack of use by some Lodges. Order forms are available if you eed oe. There is o cost to your What s Iside? O the eveig of Jauary 26th, with limited visibility due to the sow ad cold temperatures, 21 hardy Brothers gathered at Avo Sprigs Lodge for the Livigsto District Associatio Meetig. Brother Presidet, Ed Hopkis, had me first o the ageda ad I thik I got the message out of the importace of the Masoic Care Commuity ad the services that are available to all members of the Masoic Family. We also had three requests for ew Boxes of Remembrace. The questio of a bus trip to the MCC Campus came up. We have to be sure that, if ad whe a District requests oe, the bus is full. It s ot fair for the MCC to sed out a bus ad oly a few show up whe it was supposed to be full. The Home usually plas a luch for after your tour ad the expese of preparig for 40 with a turout of oly a hadful is frustratig to all. Requests should be made through your District Coordiator which will the be passed o to me. I fid that, every time I go to Utica, I lear or see somethig ew at the Home. There were just too may coditios to be attached to this process to assure hoesty i the submissios, icludig that applicatios would be rejected for failure to comply. The itet was to simplify the hadlig of these filigs, ot make it more difficult for those respodig. A quality meal ejoyed amog Brethre who act as getleme, ad who are welcomig ad friedly are essetial to the recipe of a etertaiig eveig, but they do t make the cake. There must be somethig more. It all boils dow to the quality of the program of the meetig for Lodge Night. It must be at least 20 miutes ad preferably miutes log. It must be metally stimulatig ad cause a ma to thik. It must be somethig ew that has t bee doe before or at least ot i a while. It must be etertaiig ad egage him o a emotioal level. It does t ecessarily have to be directly Masoic i ature, but it should be tied to Masoic morality somehow. The does ot have to preset the program himself, but the MUST see that there is a program at EV- ERY o-degree meetig. If you are the Seior Warde i your Lodge, ad/or the Brother who will be sittig i the East ext year, you should already be preparig your Trestleboard. You should already be workig o the programs you pla to deliver ext year. Are you doig your research? Are you readig? Have you take ay otes? Have you writte ay paragraphs o the Masoic Light you ited to share with your Brothers? Have you asked ay Brothers if they d be willig to preset a program? IT IS LATER THAN YOU THINK! As a guidig suggestio as you pla your meetigs, I offer what I call the 5 Es to improve the quality of your programs. Programs should Educate, Elighte, Ecourage, Etertai ad Ethuse your Brothers. If they do at least a few of these 5 Es, the your Brothers will EN- JOY comig to Lodge. Because we live i a day ad age whe it s all about what s i it for me, or what am I goig to get out of comig to Lodge, I offer a alterative to the 5 Es the 5 Is. Lodge meetigs must be Ivitig, Iovative, Iterestig, Ispiratioal ad Ivigoratig. Either way (Es, Is, As, Os, Us ad sometimes Ys) we have to step it up i the quality of the meetigs beig delivered, or our Fraterity will cotiue to die a paifully slow death. Meetigs ted to be borig ad, Brothers, that s ot me talkig. Our Grad, Most Worshipful William J. Thomas, has said this. Meetigs must be compellig ad provocative if a ma s desire is to be challeged ad etertaied. Etertaimet is ot a dirty word whe it comes to puttig o a Lodge meetig. If that ma is ot preset i your Lodge Room, you ca bet he s beig etertaied i frot of his televisio or computer scree. Ad Oe More Thig If you re a Brother readig this ad sayig, Yes, this article is reprimadig the of my Lodge, well, thik agai! ALL OF US - eve the sideliers have a duty to cotribute to programs that make comig to Lodge Iterestig ad Etertaiig! Kick it ito gear, Brothers. Moroe District Membership Developmet Are We Askig the Right Questios? By Bruce Katz, Committee Chair There is a old adage, Askig the wrog questio wo t get you the right aswer. This simple observatio has virtually uiversal March 2015 applicatio i life, ad is a first step i determiig the actios for Membership Developmet. Objective The objective of Membership Developmet is buildig the iterest ad activity of Brothers i their Lodges. I costructig his Trestleboard, every seeks to build a memorable year of educatio ad activity for the beefit of the Craft ad the Brothers. So, why is participatio typically oly 25% of the membership? Promises Freemasory promises to make good me better i a eviromet of Friedship, Morality ad Brotherly Love. Are we truly deliverig o this promise? What do we do well? What eeds to be improved? What questios SHOULD we be askig? Please cosider challegig yourself ad your Brothers to askig the right questios. This might make a iterestig table coversatio durig your ext collatio or Lodge meetig. Here are a few possible questios: What would a successful year look like? What s prevetig us from gettig there? How do we overcome those challeges? For Active Brothers: Why do you atted Lodge? Why do you believe iactive Brothers rarely atted? How do we chage this? For Iactive Brothers: Why do t you atted Lodge more frequetly? What is missig for you that the Active Brothers see? How do we chage this? Oe way to check to see if the questios are o the right path is to use The Five Why Techique After a aswer to the iitial questio, ask Why? To that respose, agai ask, Why? This may be helpful i gettig past the superficial questios to delve to the root of the matter. Let s get the coversatio goig to be sure that we re askig the right questios. Askig the right questios will help determie the actios to get the results we wat for our Lodges. 13 March 2015 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com 13 York Rite Hiram Chapter No. 62 What s Happeig The leadership of the Chapter is chagig agai. Our outgoig DDGHP, R\E\ Joh Zabel, was elected to serve as High Priest for the comig year. With the help of our outgoig High Priest, E\ Rick Howe, we have a good idea for the year s program. We will be slowly goig through the Capitular Developmet Course. This method will be goig through small sectios of the course at those meetigs where o other program or Degree is scheduled. Oh, ad E\ Rick Howe will be istalled our ew DDGHP for the 13th Capitular District at Grad Chapter, March 5th - 7th, i Albay. Iterestig times. With the help of the Chapters i the 13th District ad the 12th District we hosted a Royal Arch Degree Festival o Saturday, Jauary 31st, i the Palmyra Masoic Hall. It was a full day where the four Degrees of the Chapter were coferred. This was the most excitig festival held i the District i may years. There were 40 Cadidates for the Royal Arch Degree with may receivig the precedig three Degrees. There were also 68 Compaios from seve differet Districts preset for the coferral. This icluded the Grad Scribe, R\E\ Ray Roche, ad the Grad Priciple Sojourer, R\ Alle Bryat. Cadidates from the 16th Capitular District were accompaied by M\E\ ad R\W\ Jeff Williamso, Past Grad High Priest, ad curret Deputy Grad. The degrees were coordiated by the followig people: Compaio Lace Daul, from our Chapter, put together the Mark Maso Degree; R\E\ Joh Zabel coferred the Past Degree; R\E\ Joh Covell, the DDGHP from the 12th Capitular District to our east, brought a Degree team with him to cofer the Most Excellet Degree; ad the High Priest of Geeva Chapter, E\ Jamie Kaim, coordiated the Royal Arch Degree. The Degrees impressed the Cadidates. At the ed of the Royal Arch Degree, the Deputy Grad ad Grad Scribe both spoke to the ew Compaios about their experiece ad what it meas to be a Royal Arch Maso. The Grad Scribe oted that by exaltig 40 Compaios we icreased the membership of Grad Chapter by 1%. A otable achievemet. The Compaios i attedace were from the 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, th, 15th, ad 16th Capitular Districts, which was also very impressive. There were Cadidates from each of these Districts; some required several hours travel to atted. We set a mark that will be hard to pass i the future, but we may work o it. Musigs Let us take a short look at what each of the York Rite Degrees portrays, but ot ecessarily the teachigs of the Degrees. The Mark Maso Degree, the first of the sequece, demostrates the workig day of the masos buildig Kig Solomo s Temple ad the method i which they receive their wages. It also shows how hoest work builds character. The Past Degree, although ot sheddig ay ew light, prepares the Cadidate for the Royal Arch Degree. The Most Excellet Degree is the oly Masoic Degree where somethig is completed ad dedicated ad it demostrates the method of dedicatio. The Royal Arch Degree demostrated how dedicated work ca fid that which was lost ad the ceremoy of passig the veils. More o the veils ext moth. As with the Lodge Degrees, you ca read about the Degrees ad go through exposes of the Ritual, but you do t start uderstadig the teachigs of the Degrees util you actually have them coferred o you. The York Rite Degrees are iteded to add to the teachigs of the first three Degrees ad to complete the story that the Third Degree starts but does ot fiish. The ritual of the Third Degree does tell us that the story is ot complete. The Royal Arch Degree completes the story ad amplifies o the origial teachigs. Well, eough for this moth. Next moth we will describe the proceedig of Grad Chapter ad get ito other portios of the Degrees. Doric Coucil No. 19 Jauary s meetig was called off do to reasos beyod our cotrol. The work of our February meetig was receivig the message from our Deputy Grad. We had a pleasat repast ad the to the Coucil for our meetig. We also welcomed our two ew Select s, who just received their Degree i December. Nuggets of Wisdom from the Cryptic Website I order for us to comprehed Cryptic Masory let us review our uderstadig of all the Degrees of a York Rite Maso startig with Blue Lodge, cotiuig through Chapter ad the Coucil Degrees ad, for Christia Masos, that of Commadery. I ll cotiue with a accout of the York Rite as fouded upo traditioal ad ethical elemets which will ot udertake a historical or critical aalysis. The Symbolic Degrees The Etered Appretice is a bearer of burdes; the Fellowcraft is a skilled workma ad the Maso, a director of the work. The Etered Appretice Degree, the 1st Degree of Masory, admoishes the Cadidate to obey the rules ad regulatios ad lear to practice secrecy. The backgroud of this Degree, like may others, is the buildig of Kig Solomo s Temple i Jerusalem. The Etered Appretice is taught symbolically to labor upo the buildig of the Temple, to subdue the passios, ad to improve himself i Masory. He receives here the begiig of the istructios which are to guide him i search of the secret of Freemasory. The Fellowcraft is istructed i the priciples of Geometry. The differet Orders of Architecture are explaied to him ad he is ejoied to study the Seve Liberal Arts ad Scieces, ad to proceed o his jourey toward the attaimet of Masoic kowledge. The Maso is taught umerous very importat moral lessos goverig his coduct i the world toward others; that he must aswer ad obey the rules of the order; must ot cheat, wrog or defraud a Brother or a Lodge of Masos, but o the cotrary must help, aid ad assist a distressed Brother, his widow ad orphas. Preparatio for the life to come is iculcated by beautiful ceremoies. The Temple is ot yet completed, ad those faithful craftsme who have labored so log upo it are deprived, by the wickedess of others of that for which they have wrought. The Cadidate receives light as fully as it may come to him i the Symbolic Lodge, ad a substitute for that which by further search he may hope to receive later, the real secret of a Maso. The buildig of the Temple symbolizes the perfectio of our moral life ad the cotiuous effort to erect withi ourselves a spiritual buildig, a house ot made with hads, eteral i the heaves. The Capitular Degrees The first of the four Degrees i the Chapter is the Mark, ad i it, the Cadidate is still symbolically laborig o a ufiished temple as i the precedig Degrees of the Blue Lodge. He is taught the obility of labor ad that i the erectio of his moral ad spiritual temple he must determie ad prepare the materials of which that temple is to be costructed ad to have due care that i so doig the work which he shall preset, bearig his mark, shall be such as to desigate him as worthy of admissio to that house ot made with hads, eteral i the heaves. This Degree is perhaps as old as, if ot older tha, ay other Degree of Aciet Craft Masory. It is so aciet, i fact, that its real origi caot be traced exactly; but i 1598, i Scotlad, Statutes were issued which required the Operative Maso to register his Mark. No Degree i Freemasory ca be more iterestig, more ispirig, or more istructive, tha that of the Mark Degree. The secod of the four Degrees i the Chapter is the PAST MASTER, ad i former times o oe was eligible for the Royal Arch except Actual or Past s of Lodges, which meat that very few could receive it, so the Degree of Past was istituted whereby oe might become a Virtual by meas of the ceremoy of this Degree, ad thus be eligible for exaltatio to the Royal Arch. The third Degree i the Chapter is the MOST EXCEL- LENT MASTER, ad recites the evets surroudig the completio of Kig Solomo s Temple ad its dedicatio with imposig ceremoies to the services of the Most High God; the very idea upo which Masoic Symbolism has bee based. Kig Solomo offers a sublime ivocatio, ad fire comes dow from heave ad cosumes the burt offerigs ad the sacrifices. The Brethre rejoice that their log labor is eded; lay aside their apros, are greeted as Most Excellet s, ad receive their reward. This eds the cycle of Degrees havig to do with the erectio of Kig Solomo s Temple ad brigs us up to the sublime story, spaig ceturies of time, set forth i the Royal Arch Degree. Royal Arch Degree The Holy Royal Arch Degree is kow as the Summit of Aciet Craft Masory. It was cosidered so importat i our early history that oe but actual s of Lodges were permitted to receive it. This Degree brigs to Light that for which the Maso has searched. Wheever there is a loss, there should be a recovery, ad the Royal Arch Degree vividly portrays that recovery. Thus are coected together, i the most itimate way, the work of the Blue Lodge ad work of the Chapter - either beig complete without the other. Saracha, 33, ad History of the Grad Commadery Kights Templar i the State of New York, , Volume I by SK Roald L Brow, PGS, KCT Grad Historia. Early i 1826, a group of Masos residig i Moroe Couty, most of whom, if ot all, were members of Wells Lodge No. 282 F&AM ad Hamilto Chapter No. 62, Royal Arch Masos, decided to orgaize a Ecampmet, Kights Templar, i the Village of Rochester, to be kow as Moroe Ecampmet. They requested the coset of Geesee Ecampmet No. 10, the located i LeRoy, which was refused. Perhaps of this request, a resolutio was adopted by the Grad Ecampmet o Jue 9, 1826, that o warrat or dispesatio shall be issued to form a Ecampmet withi thirty miles of ay regularly costituted Ecampmet. The Brethre of Rochester were ot to be thwarted. O Jue, 1826, a resolutio was adopted by New Jerusalem Ecampmet at Ithaca, requestig to the orgaizatio of a brach at Rochester. The resolutio was as follows: We the udersiged Officers of New Jerusalem Ecampmet, Ithaca, Couty of Tompkis, do give our coset that a Brach of our Ecampmet of Kights Templar, Kights of Malta ad Appedat Degrees may be opeed ad held i the Village of Rochester, Couty of Moroe, State of New York, ad that the said Ecampmet shall be called ad tiled Moroe Ecampmet, to be maaged ad govered by the uder-amed Brothers Sir Kight be their Officers, viz. Fracis H. Cumig, Grad Commader; Joatha Child, Geeralissimo; Abelard Reyolds, Captai Geeral; ad the we will cosider ourselves i Uio with said Ecampmet ad all others which they may hereiafter sactio, (siged) Natha Beers, Grad Commader; Richard Oews, Geeralissimo; Miles Mix, Captai Geeral; ad C.P. Heeas, Recorder. O July 10, 1826, the Sir Kights of Moroe Ecampmet held their first Coclave. The Officers were istalled by the Officers of Jerusalem Ecampmet at a Public Istallatio held at Sait Paul s Episcopal Church o July 13th. The fact that a brach had bee istituted, may have iflueced the Grad Ecampmet to modify its policy. O September 18, 1826, that Body grated a Dispesatio to form a Ecampmet of Kights Templar i the Village of Rochester, ad o Jue 8, 1827, issued a Warrat or Charter for the Ecampmet to be kow as Moroe Ecampmet No. 12. This Charter is still i the possessio of Moroe Commadery No. 12. However, the ati-masoic movemet was at its height. O February 27, 1829, a meetig was held to cosider resigig the Charter. Effective March 13, 1829, ad for a period of 18 years, Moroe Ecampmet ceased to exist. Durig this time the Village of Rochester became a city ad the area prospered. By 1845, the Masoic Commuity bega to recover ad re-activate. Hamilto Chapter No. 62 RAM revived i Moroe Commadery re-activated Jauary 28, By Jue, 1850, membership had grow to 30. I 1857, the ame was chaged to Moroe Commadery ad the title of the presidig Officer to Emiet Commader, as a result of chages at the State level. If you feel hollow, that s just your proof that there s more, You eed to follow, that s what the loely is for. ~David Wilcox We are dwellers of a orate, deeply detailed ad itricately rich Victoria masio o the edge of tow. We do t live here, but rather it is a secod home. Some of us have bee visitig this place for may years, ad some have just recetly walked through the frot door. There are some who may be cosiderig turig o their heels ad walkig out. That s ufortuate. Still, may of us do t get too far past the frot door vestibule ad the two frot parlors, to explore the mysterious rooms i the two mai wigs of the house. Is it eough to just stad i the etryway ad parlors? Grated, there s certaily a lot to look at there, ad these three rooms are homey ad comfortig. There are may fie details to itrigue the eye, ad excite the spirit. The Architect of this structure certaily kew what he was doig because you ca see it i the cosistecy of the desig ad the attetio to detail, which exteds dow the two primary corridors as visible from the etryway. I ca t imagie why ayoe would walk through the frot door of such a stupedous edifice ad ot wat to wader through this amazig buildig! They say there are at least 10 rooms dow that corridor ad at least 29 rooms dow the other oe. That s a lot to explore. Although I ve take a quick ru through most of these rooms, I keep watig to go back because, each time I do, somethig ew strikes my curiosity. That corridor over there features desigs with triagles, circles ad a cross; strikig colors of red, purple ad black. This oe features a doubled headed bald eagle; Gold ad black ad white. Though there are differeces, there are strikig similarities. I ca t help but to thik that, if some of those who exited the masio after their brief stop were to have take a stroll dow this corridor or that oe, they might still be admirig the buildig with us. Your cotiued support ad ecouragemet is appreciated. Is it a curse or a blessig, this palace of promise? It most certaily is a Palace of Promise ad there is o doubt i my mid that it is a blessig, if we choose to follow those corridors. Some have bee guided by the well-itetioed advice of stayig i those first three rooms for a few years before explorig further. I m glad I did t heed that advice. Those who are cosistetly preset i the frot rooms are also frequetly see waderig up ad dow these corridors. They have developed a deeper appreciatio for the buildig. Yes, this is a remarkable buildig, a mysterious buildig, a fortress eve, agaist hostile elemets. But it must be explored to gai; a uderstadig, a fod appreciatio, a deeper kowledge, a more complete educatio, brotherhood, visio, wisdom. You have bee admitted ad received. You are free to wader.
