This combiatio of observatios is sometimes followed by theories of pedig doom, ragig from Waka-Hubbard Lodge ca o loger support the buildig because they are broke, or Waka-Hubbard Lodge is fallig apart ad eeds to merge with someoe. I ve heard several versios of this storylie ad thought it would be helpful to everyoe to share the real story ot just because it is importat to me that everyoe uderstads the facts, but What s Iside? Sharig our experiece may be helpful to others. Like most of the Lodges i Moroe District, Waka-Hubbard has a rich history ad, i its curret form, is the result of the cosolidatio of multiple Lodges. Pefield Uio Lodge No. 154, oe of our predecessor Lodges, built our Lodge Buildig i While we beefitted for decades by havig stable commercial teats o the first floor, which covered the costs of buildig owership, there was ever much left over to pay for maiteace. Certaily, the Lodge did ot have the fuds that would be eeded to restore the buildig to its historical beauty, or to make the ecessary upgrades that would allow it to become a gatherig place for multiple Lodges. Ufortuately, the Opticia who had occupied the corer uit o the first floor for early 40 years retired i He sold the busiess to aother Opticia, but it flopped. Start off the ew year right! Grad Director of Ceremoies R W Alla Joe Gree adoiram32@ yahoo.com May is upo us ad the process of passig the torch begis. At the idividual Lodge level, most Lodges i Waye District have already begu this moths ago. For my Home Lodge, there really is o Electio of Officers. The Brothers toss aroud ames over coffee from Jauary to May ad the have a secret ballot for the sigle Brother we agree to omiate for each elected positio, excludig our Brother. (The electio of Secretaries i all Lodges falls uder a uwritte law withi the Costitutios. If he survives his first year of acceptig the positio he becomes irreplaceable ad, i time a Pillar of the Lodge, more priceless tha the or Wardes). Basically, the same process happes for Appoited Officers. Whe the -Elect realizes he is movig to the East, he asks a Brother if he wats to take a Chair. Sometimes it s Sure. Okay. I ll do it. Sometimes it s Heck No!! That s kida the process util May for each of the Appoited Chairs ad sometimes Elected positios. Somewhere betwee Jauary ad May, a Brother agrees to fill each of the Chairs ad we have a Electio. I ve bee to several Lodge Electios aroud the District ad it appears everyoe uses a similar system. O the ote of passig the torch, the Purple Club has proudly submitted R\W\ Jeff Gago s ame to Grad Lodge for Deputy Deputy Grad of Waye District ad R\W\ Mike Cholach for Waye District Staff Officer for the Term. R\W\ Joh Krest, DDGM, has aouced submissio of V\W\ Jim Champage s ame as Assistat Grad Lecturer for Waye District. Brothers Jeff ad Mike traveled to Utica for traiig sessios last moth. A secod text asked whe North Rose-Wolcott Lodge met, to which I agai replied the 1st ad 3rd Modays. Aother text asked whe Newark Lodge met ad I respoded the 1st ad 3rd Modays. About a five-miute pause ad Jeff texted back, Ad your Lodge meets 1st ad 3rd Modays. Are you tellig me half the Lodges i the District meet o the same ight, at the same time, ad o oe ca figure out why each Lodge ca t get help from others with Degree work? OMG!! It is the most sigificat Masoic experiece I have had yet. I doubt I will have aother experiece as sigificat as this oe. At least ot while I m alive. What I m talkig about is the icredibly supportive experiece I have had after my Dad passed o December 28, Although his Lodge (Apollo No. 386) was i Philadelphia ad he was a member of the Valley of Alletow, he was a 50- plus year member of Damascus Shrie. He had bee fairly active i the 1960s, 70s ad early 80s. He was a regular attedee of the Legio of Hoor util his death. I especially liked to ask him the questio Where did you first become a Maso? I love the aswer to that questio. He kew it. This was a ma who had bee Raised about 60 years previously at the time, ad had his jourey through the Chairs iterrupted after his Seior Warde Year, because his job had trasferred him to Rochester from Philadelphia. His beig at each of my Degrees ad Raisig me i the Northeast Corer of Northfield Lodge will forever be a memory I will cherish. Our Craft teaches us beautiful lessos which each of us would do well to take to heart. The symbolism ad allegory of our Degrees provide a lifetime of meaigfuless to cotemplate as we experiece life s ufoldig. However, beig a regular attedee at Lodge or a member of every Masoic Body oe ca joi, does ot ecessarily make oe a good Maso. There are o doubt Brothers who have t bee to Lodge i may years, yet who are pheomeal Masos because they live Masory i the maer i which they coduct their lives outside of the Lodge Room. They practice the four Cardial Virtues ad the three pricipal Teets of our professio. They live daily with a deep uderstadig of the teachigs of our Craft, which are witessed i the way they treat their fellow ma. This is the lesso I leared from my Dad. These are the Masoic gifts my father has give to me ad my coectio to him will be eteral through our mystic Brotherhood. So mote it be!!! Assistat Grad Lecturer Moroe District R W Roy Moses roymoses46@gmail.com I had this article by Jim Kershaw set to me. I shorteed it a bit to fit this paper ad I thik you will ejoy it. Who eeds the Ritual? We Do. To explai why it takes a little loger, i a real sese, it is the Ritual of Masory which makes Masory WORK. Ritual is the chael through which Masory teaches. But it is more tha that. Because Ritual is so importat to Masory, it s worth takig a little time to talk about the ature of the ritual itself ad why it is cetral to the Masoic experiece. All of us egage i ritual all the time we just do t recogize it. Most of us have a morig routie; for example, some of us shave before showerig, some of us shave after we shower, ad some while we shower. Most of us shake hads whe we are itroduced; or recogize the Pledgig Allegiace to the Flag is a ritual; ad bowig the head durig prayer is a ritual. Why is This? Ritual gives us a framework to orgaize evets. We do t deal with chaos. We make lists of thigs to do, to buy, to read. Ritual does the same thig for us. By doig thigs i a give order (which is the essece of ritual), we make sure everythig gets doe. Ritual helps us i our relatioship to others; ritual is a powerful teachig tool; ritual gives us a sese of idetity; ritual helps us prepare, helps us get i the mood, for what is to follow. The Ritual of Masory ivolves all the above poits ad more; the Opeig ad Closig, the Degrees, eve the Ritual of votig orgaizes the evets ad makes sure that everythig happes that is supposed to. It helps us defie ourselves as Masos ad stregthes the Frateral ties which bid us together as Brothers. That effect is iteratioal ad cross-cultural. We kow whe we have shared experieces with Masos from all over the world. Masoic Ritual gives full rage to Masos to explore their ow iterests. Masoic Ritual is large eough ad complex eough to accommodate all those iterests - ad may more. So, agai, Who eeds Ritual ayway? We all do. The Ritual of Masory meets may eeds ad may iterests. It is a primary way we teach ad lear. It is the GLUE which holds us together. It is importat. It makes us, US. There are more tha eough opportuities for you to cotribute, ad (I ow kow from persoal experiece) that amog the sweetest words to a is a Brother askig How ca I help? There were some Brothers who ever made it to Lodge this year did someoe make a phoe call to see how they are doig? If ot you, the who? Why are some Lodges thrivig ad others i dager of collapse? There are may resources available to Lodges. For example, participatio i s ad Wardes, as well as the educatioal opportuities i The s Chair ad Road to the East Programs ca help prepare Lodge leadership. Guidig ew Brothers i metorship programs ad educatioal opportuities such as the Masoic Developmet Course ad the LSOME (Lodge System of Masoic Educatio videos ad booklets) ca help make these me lifelog Masos. Paul, Chair, Board of Goverors Metamorphoses Submitted by Sublime Price Robert Scogga Valley of Corig Parmeides was a Greek philosopher famous for his three-part poem etitled O Nature. The first part, The Way of Truth, illustrated the topic of chage. He stated that chage just happes outside space ad time, that othig comes from othig. The idea that somethig caot be does t exist. That is because to have a is ot meas that you must have a is. This thought ca be simplified with the Law of Eergy. Kietic eergy is eergy that is i motio. Whe a rock is rollig dow a hill, it cosists of kietic eergy. As the rock leaves the hill ad stops agaist a wall, the kietic eergy turs ito potetial eergy without ay eergy beig lost. This is because eergy caot be created or destroyed, oly coserved. We ca the expad this idea by lookig at the metamorphosis of a caterpillar ito a moth. The process of a caterpillar ito a moth is a fasciatig process. The caterpillar turs ito a chrysalis whe the caterpillar eats util it is full. Iside this cocoo, the caterpillar begis to chage. The body of this caterpillar begis to melt dow. The eyes, body, ad eve the brai melts ito a soup-type substace. The the caterpillar begis to reform, takig o the shape of a moth. It brigs back the ecessary parts, eve its memories, from whe it was a caterpillar while disposig of the parts it o loger eeds. What does all this have to do with Masory? As we istitute ew policies ad procedures like the Booked Degrees i reuios, ad redistrictig withi our Aciet Craft Lodges ad Valleys, we should remember ot to fret with these chages; that chages are either bad or good but ievitable. Like Parmeides wrote i his poem, we caot stop existig because we already exist. Brothers, we should ot worry about chage o matter how scary it may seem, because from our first kock at that outer door to our chrysalis stage as we walked up those flight of stairs to beig raised to the Sublime Degree of Maso, we have always bee Masos. This has held true because where were we first made Masos? Our hearts.

The Iitiatio Ceremoy was held i a domed chamber resemblig the church of the Holy Sepulchre ad was to be coducted i absolute secrecy. Just as i Freemasory ceturies later, esoteric Rituals had to be performed durig this Ceremoy. I the Order s rule of 1128 about the Iitiatio Ceremoy, the would address the cogregated Brothers of the Order with: Dear Brothers, some of you have proposed that Mr. X may be admitted to the Order; if ay of you kow ay reaso to oppose his Iitiatio, say so ow. Your High Priest was uable to atted the Capstoe Course preseted by V\E\ Jamie Kaim, our Assistat Grad Lecturer, o April 11th due to other Masoic commitmets. We are cofidet that V\E\ Jamie preseted the Course well ad the attedees leared much about how to evaluate ad ru a Chapter ad more. The Capstoe Course is similar to the Grad Lodge Road to the East Course, coverig some of the same topics, but has more emphasis o Chapter workigs ad how to determie the state of most seior Brothers, told of the difficulties ad hardship awaitig him if he is admitted to the Order ad the asked whether he still wishes to be admitted. If his aswer is affirmative, he is asked whether he is married or egaged to be married, has liks to other Orders, is idebted to ayoe, is of good health ad whether or ot he is a slave. If his aswer to these questios complied with the requiremets of the Order, the seior Brothers would retur to the Temple ad say, We told the Cadidate of all the hardships awaitig him ad our coditios of admissio, but he is isistet o becomig a slave of the Order. Before beig re-admitted ito the Temple, the Cadidate is agai asked whether he still isists o beig admitted. If he still aswers yes, the Grad addresses the Cadidate, Brother, you are askig much of us. You have see oly the façade of the Order, ad you hope to acquire pureblood horses, hoorable eighbors, good food ad ice garmets. But are you aware of how hard our coditios really are? Proceedig to list the difficulties awaitig the Cadidate, he cotiues: You must ot seek admittace for wealth, or for status. If the Cadidate agrees, he is agai led out of the Temple. The Grad the asks the Brothers whether they have aythig to say about the Cadidate. If there is othig said agaist him, he is brought back, made to keel dow, ad give the Bible. He is asked if he is married. If he aswers o, the oldest or most seior i the cogregatio is asked, Have ay questios that eed to be asked bee forgotte? If the aswer is o, the Cadidate is asked to swear a oath that he will remai loyal to the Order ad his Brothers util the day he dies, ad that he will ot reveal to the outside world a word that is spoke i the Temple. He the is give a Templar matle ad a wove belt, which is ever to be take off. Templar as Fiaciers ad Traders Templars were expert fiaciers ad usig tradig techiques quite ukow i the Europe of their day. They had clearly leared may of these skills from Jewish sources, but would have much more freedom to exted their fiacial empire, i a way that ay Jewish fiacier of the period would have evied greatly. Eve though usury was forbidde, they were t afraid to led moey o iterest. The Templars had acquired such wealth ad the power that came with it that obody dared speak out agaist them or do aythig about it. This so wet to their heads that they wet out of cotrol. They were disobediet to Kigs ad the Pope ad, i some cases, eve challeged their authority. I 1303, for example, few years before their Order was liquidated, they refused a request for assistace from the Frech Kig Philip IV, as well as his later request i 1306 for the Templars Order to merge with the Hospitalers. Travel could be a hazardous eterprise i the 12th Cetury. E route, wayfarers could be The Degrees cotai a ceremoial sectio ad a allegorical sectio, just like the Lodge Degrees. The wordig of some parts of the Ceremoial Sectio of the Degrees is very close ad, i some cases, idetical to the wordig used i the Lodge Degrees. Why is this? My thikig is that the Royal Arch Degrees were developed as a extesio to the Lodge Maso Degree ad as such used the same formula. As these Degrees were developed whe the Lodge Ritual was beig firmed up by the Grad Lodges i Eglad ad the carried over here, it makes sese that the formula ad wordig would match where similar portios of the work were beig doe. Our Rituals for the Lodge ad Chapter were developed by Masos who had a great uderstadig of laguage ad how compact the laguage ca be whe presetig iformatio. Our Ritual still uses the Stadard Bible versio of Kig James, i its work. The passages use the laguage of the time of Kig James i Eglad. Now, is this laguage still uderstadable by the 21st Cetury Maso? It robbed by badits aywhere ad aytime. Trasportig moey, as well as other precious commodities essetial for trade, was particularly risky. Out of this situatio, the Templars made a fortue by meas of a fairly simple system of bakig. For example, if a tradesma wated to go from Lodo to Paris, first he would go to the Templars office i Lodo ad had over his moey. I retur, he was give a paper with a ecoded message writte o it. O his arrival i Paris, he could had i this ote i exchage for the moey he d paid i Lodo, mius a fee ad iterest. Thus the trasactio was completed. Alog with traders, wealthy pilgrims, too, made use of this system. Checks issued by Templars i Europe could be cashed i o arrival i Palestie, mius a hefty iterest charge for this service. I The Temple ad the Lodge, co-authors Michael Baiget ad Richard Leigh explai the Templars ecoomic dimesio, recordig that the begiigs of moder bakig ca be traced back to them, ad that o other orgaizatio cotributed as much as the Templars to the rise of capitalism. History records Floretie bakers as havig iveted May 2016 ca be, but it takes careful listeig ad persoal iterpretatio to grasp the full meaig of the passages used i the Degrees. This ca lead to the Compaio learig some very importat moral lessos. Should the Ritual use more moder Bible traslatios i its work? It could, but it would take a group of very well-read ad kowledgeable Compaios to pick the traslatio that would cause the geeral Compaios to uderstad the lesso the way it was origially iteded. Oh, ad there are may moder Eglish versios of the Bible that are traslatios from origial sources ad pickig oe is ot a simple task; ask ay Pastor. Whe our Rituals were beig developed the Kig James Versio was the oly stadard Eglish Versio that was traslated from the kow origials at the time. Therefore, it made sese to use that versio i our Ritual. Well, we have give you somethig to thik about as we proceed ito Summer, eve though there is sow o the groud as I write this ad the temperature is more like Jauary tha April. checkig accouts, yet the Templars were usig this method of moey trasfer log before. It is geerally accepted that capitalism first arose i the Jewish commuity of Amsterdam, but log before them, the Templars had established their ow medieval capitalism, icludig bakig based o iterest. They let moey o iterest rates of up to 60% ad cotrolled a major proportio of capital flow ad liquidity i the ecoomy of Europe. Usig methods much like those of a moder private bak, they derived profits from both trade ad bakig, as well as from doatios ad armed coflict. They became as rich as the multi-atioal compay that, i effect, they were. At oe time, the fiaces of the Eglish ad Frech moarchies were cotrolled ad ru by the Templars respective offices i Lodo ad Paris, ad both the Eglish ad Frech Royal Families owed the Templars huge amouts of moey. The Kigs of Europe were literally at their mercy, hopig to borrow moey, ad most royal households had come to deped o the Order. This let them maipulate the Kigs ad their atioal polices for their ow purposes.
