The real A-B-Cs of Masory By Art Maso I my 30 + years i the Craft, I have heard members talk about may woderful groups ad orgaizatios we have supported. However, the true meaig of Freemasory was show to me i the actios take by idividual Brothers, Lodges ad Cocordat Bodies whe a older couple was the victim of elder abuse/fiacial exploitatio. I am a Social Worker, by professio, ad my job is to aid ad assist victims livig i the commuity (ot ursig homes). Approximately two years ago, I met Jack ad Mary (ot their real ames) after a referral from the police. As I walked ito their home, it was clear from the certificates o their walls to the decoratios o their tables that both had bee logtime members of several Masoic orgaizatios. Jack had physical disabilities ad Mary was his caregiver. They had bee befrieded by a idividual claimig to be a cotractor. This ma had coviced them that their home was i such disrepair that the tow was goig to codem it. He The 235th Aual Commuicatio of the Grad Lodge of the State of New York will be held at Masoic Hall, i New York City o May 2d ad 3rd. Over the ext two years, through deceptio ad maipulatio, he took their etire life savigs yet did ot repair their roof, chimey, water heater or gutters as promised. Call for Assistace Although I am familiar with the limited resources available to older crime victims, I reached out to the Masoic Fraterity ad the support was overwhelmig! They took Actio by havig Brothers come to the house ad replace the couples water heater; they showed Brotherly Love by visitig them ad reachig out to other Cocordat Bodies to help; ad they provided Charity by providig them with moey so they could pay their bills ad stay i their home. Although the perpetrator has bee arrested, his fate has ot yet bee determied. He spet all of the moey o gamblig ad has o resources to pay them back. It is clear to me that, if it were ot for the shiig Light of Masory, this couple would have othig. I am truly proud to call myself a Maso. 235th Aual Commuicatio of the Grad Lodge of the State of New York May 2d ad 3rd, 2016 the Hall. My directio is toward the upcomig Have-a-Heart Campaig. The Committee is workig hard so we ca have a smooth Campaig. Let s hope the weather will cooperate ad led a had i makig our 2016 Campaig a huge success. As I ve said i the past, less is more, so that s it for this article. I wish you ad yours a great 2016; I am proud of you all. A Proud Maso Grad Steward R W Stepha Micheer smichee@ rochester.rr.com Have you ever had oe of those experieces, where suddely you realize you are i way over your head? You kow what I m talkig about. All of a sudde you recogize you are just way out of your league ad you do t have a clue about what you should do. Maybe you thought it would be easier tha it looks ad the it s your tur ad you re ready to throw i the towel just after you got started. I have kow ad heard of Worshipful Masters who have assumed the East ad foud that it was t as easy as they thought it would be. The guy before them made it look fairly easy ad thigs wet smoothly for them. But ow, you re the guy sittig i the East ad already your Brothers are startig to complai. The Past Masters are tellig you that s ot the way we did it i my year. You have o idea how you are goig to tur this aroud ad make the situatio work for your Lodge. It s September ad ext Jue ca t come soo eough. Road to the East No oe wats to have this kid of experiece. Fortuately the Grad Lodge of the State of New York has somethig for you. It s called the Road to the East (RTTE) ad it is desiged to give you the kowledge, skills ad cofidece to succeed whe you are i the East. The Class will be offered o February 20th ad March 5th at Pittsford Masoic Hall from 8 a.m. util 2 p.m. If you ited to take it, you must pre-register with me by February 13th. Sed a to: smichee@rochester.rr.com Now, About How We Did It I My Year Every Past Master will be glad to tell you how you should be coductig your year. Some of the advice you will hear will be helpful ad geuiely i your best iterest to follow. Some of it you might wat to thak the Brother offerig it ad the just do it your way. Ay orgaizatio that is goig to thrive ad grow must experiece chage. Masory, itself, has evolved ad chaged over the years ad will, o doubt, cotiue to chage i the future. Do ot be afraid of chage. The Thig About Should People love to tell each other what you should ve or should t have doe. This is especially true of well-meaig Past Masters. You should ve plaed this evet a little earlier. You should t have allowed that Brother to say that i Lodge. You should ve asked me to do that for you. These are all examples of a past tese should, meaig a should or should t statemet that refers to the past. I essece, what a perso is sayig by usig a past tese should is that reality should t have bee as reality actually was, or reality should have bee differet tha it actually is. This ca create a emotioal respose of frustratio, dejectio ad maybe eve ager. I the immortal words of Cogitive Psychologist, Albert Ellis, should-hood equals sh#t-hood. So here s the takeaway from this. Whether you are o the givig or receivig ed of givig well-itetioed advice, try to avoid tellig someoe what they should ve doe or should t have doe. If you are receivig advice tellig what you should ve doe or should t have doe, igore it. The best advice is usually give i the form of what you might do, i the FUTURE. You ca t do aythig about what you should have or should ot have doe. You ca oly cotrol ad chage what you are doig NOW ad i the FUTURE. So here s some advice from me. If you ited o beig the Master of your Lodge you SHOULD pla to take the Road to the East o February 20th ad March 5th. You SHOULD also register with me at: smichee@rochester.rr.com by February 13th. The Degree work is progressig well ad improvemet is much better overall tha the first of the Degrees. I am also seeig a greater iterest i the metorig of Cadidates. I thik the Lodges are fially seeig that great metorig is the most importat factor of doig Degree Work. Good job Brothers, we are o the right track. Oe word of cautio, my Brothers, good metorig starts with GOOD ivestigatig. Oly Cadidates who wat to be Masos, will be good Masos. I believe that the better the ivestigatio, the better the Cadidates will be. We are startig o the right track, but we are ot there YET. Remember: It might be better to ot recommed a Cadidate who is bad or ot ready. The rehearsals are comig alog really well. Attedace is icreasig, but overall, ot where I would like it to be. I am lookig for 20 Brothers to be at a rehearsal by the ed of the year. I have had 10, 11, 12, 15, ad 16, but oly oe i the 20s. This is a goal for the Masters. If oe Lodge ca get 20 Brothers to a rehearsal ad others ca get 15-18, the every Lodge ca get these Brothers out for a practice. Oe last thig I would like to brig up is I would like every Lodge to fiish the Degree they are coferrig. I realize that sometimes thigs happe ad some key players ca t show up. Every Master should do everythig i his power to fiish the Degree that ight. This is most importat i the 3rd Degree because if that Degree is ot fiished, the Cadidate caot sig the By-Laws util it has bee completed. Keep up the good work, Brothers. I like to drik it. I eve like to talk about it. I pay attetio to cycles. You may have heard me talk about the cycle of four score ad seve years. The beer cycle, though, is great ad I would eve say ispiratioal. So I wat to talk about beer, if that is alright. I 1979 ear the low poit i umber of breweries i America, there were 44 breweries. There were 42 idustrial breweries ad two craft breweries. May of these large idustrial breweries did t have the most flavorful beer. The tred i the umber of breweries had bee goig dow for decades. From that low poit, though, thigs started movig i a differet directio. Did me chage? Did what they wat out of life chage? I doubt it. By last year though, 2015, the umber of breweries had soared to 4,144 of which 20 were of the idustrial type ad the rest were craft breweries. We have over 100 breweries just i New York State. Me seem to like to have a choice ad seem to like to have local availability. I kow Brothers makig their ow beer as well. As you ca see, this is a oce-i-a-lifetime opportuity to receive all eleve Degrees of the LOP beig preseted by seve differet Valleys i the Norther Masoic Jurisdictio. I believe this is a very gracious gesture from the Valley of Bosto to make this available to ay Valley i the Norther Masoic Jurisdictio at o cost to our Valley. cycle why ca t Craft Lodges? The Scottish Rite eeds to have Master Maso Lodges that do well ad thrive. All of us should uderstad that our experiece i Masory should be a jourey ad ot a destiatio. There is Light beyod the 3rd Degree. Some Brothers joi the Scottish Rite, but really ever bother to get aythig out of it. Maybe they joied because of my great persuasive ability or maybe they like the idea of beig a 32d Degree Maso. If all you did was joi ad atted oe Reuio ad the quit, or are thikig of quittig, I would ask you to recosider. Brothers i the Scottish Rite joi for several reasos, but may, i large part, joi to cotiue a jourey i life of icremetal improvemet. At whatever your age ad however busy you are, it is worthwhile to work o persoal improvemet. I the Scottish Rite you will be with Brothers who have decided they wat to take the jourey of improvemet ad how ejoyable it is to jourey i life with a group with similar goals. Do t sell yourself short. Decide that you are ot too busy to have a purposeful life that strives for icremetal improvemet. We all make time for that which is importat to us. We all have the same amout of time. We do t all have the same commitmet. We do t all decide to take a particular jourey. This path has bee trod by others. It has a record of success. There are o obstacles to takig this path other tha those you put up yourself. If you are o the path, cosider ecouragig others of like mid to cotiue with you. We ca do may thigs together. Sharig a beer together is ejoyable but sharig a life jourey of improvemet with Brothers is ot oly ejoyable but sublime. As previously stated i last moth s article, the Valley of Rochester is charterig a bus to trasport our members ad wives to this Reuio. We will be leavig early Friday morig, April 8th, but the exact time ad meetig place has ot yet bee determied. Please cosider joiig us o this ocei-a-lifetime experiece. Ay questios or commets please feel free to cotact me at: bedford67@gmail.com Rochester Chapter of Kights of Rose Croix By Stepha Micheer, 32 Most Wise Master Membership Chairma That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD s Passover, who passed over the houses of the childre of Israel i Egypt, whe he smote the Egyptias, ad delivered our houses. Ad the people bowed the head ad worshipped. ~ Exodus 12:27 The came the day of uleaveed bread, whe the Passover must be killed. Ad He set Peter ad Joh, sayig, Go ad prepare us the Passover, that we may eat. ~ Luke 22:7 O Suday, March 13th, the Valley of Rochester will hold The Feast of the Pascal Lamb. Social hour will begi at 3 p.m., with the program commecig at 4 p.m. ad a dier will follow. This will occur at the Damascus Shrie Ceter. The sigificace of the Feast of the Pascal Lamb is to commemorate two historic evets idetified by Judaism ad Christiaity. It is at this seaso of Sprig ad reewal that we celebrate these evets. Passover commemorates the Jews flight from Egypt, led by Moses, where they were beig held i bodage. God had visited te plagues (the 10th beig the death of a first-bor) upo the Egyptias as puishmet for the si of slavery. As a form of protectio, God had ordered captive Jews to sacrifice a lamb ad its blood splashed upo the doorway of their dwelligs. Also durig Passover, Matzah (which is uleaveed bread) is eate to commemorate the Jews hasty departure from Egypt. Sice there was ot time to wait for the yeast to cause the dough to rise, the flat Matzah produced had to suffice. It is at Passover whe the Seder dier ceremoy takes place, which celebrates the Exodus, the re-birth of Freedom ad the restoratio of Israel. Bible Historias quibble o whether Jesus Last Supper was a Passover Seder or ot. Eve the four caoical Gospels offer slight variatios regardig the timig. Settig that aside, we ca agree that Christ s sacrifice as the Lamb of God who takes away the sis of the world, has major sigificace Our Missio: We will strive to be a fraterity that fulfills our Masoic obligatio to care for our members. We ca also agree that those evets that occurred at The Last Supper (washig the feet, breakig the bread, drikig the wie) occurred about the time of Passover. This the led to the betrayal of Christ, his crucifixio, ad the ascesio ad resurrectio. It is thus so, that these two major religious traditios come together at both this time of year, ad i the Pascal Lamb Feast. The symbolism of each is complemetary of the other ad offers deep spiritual meaig. The feast of the Pascal Lamb alludes to these woderful traditios ad ackowledges most sigificatly those of our Brethre Kights of the Rose Croix who have departed earthly existece, ad have goe to their eteral rest. Roberts, cholyoe@rochester.rr.com 17 Church Street, Pittsford What s Happeig We are well ito the Masoic Year ad have started a New Year. There is much the Chapter eeds to do this comig year. We worked durig Jauary to prepare for coferral of the last two Degrees o our Cadidatei-waitig. We will let you kow ext moth how well we succeeded ad future plas for Degree coferral. It has bee stated that the icomig Grad High Priest will ot allow festivals for Degree work for less tha 20 Cadidates. So the comig challege will be to fid a umber of Cadidates ad work with the other Chapters i our District to meet the miimum of 20 or, coversely, put together Degree Teams from our members, with possible assistace from other Chapters to cofer the Degrees ourselves. These are challegig times, but we will be workig to prevail. We had a great meetig i December where we set up most of the Chapter Officers for the comig year. The Officers were istalled at our first meetig i Jauary. The comig moths will see programs o the Costitutio of Grad Chapter, the history of our Chapter ad discussio of the symbolism ad meaig of the differet Degrees. We hope to educate our Compaios of may facets of the Royal Arch so they ca be spokesme for the Royal Arch i their Lodges ad with other Masoic Brothers. Ferguso, Robert Scotty O Jauary 9th, Robert Ferguso, 85, foud peace i the arms of the Lord. Scotty is survived by 3 childre, 9 gradchildre ad 15 greatgradchildre. We wish you the gift of a memory wheever you eed to kow, the oe you love still walks with you wherever you may go. Your High Priest is always lookig for suggestios for programs ad activities for both Chapter meetigs ad other types of evets ad activities. Oh, ad this does ot mea that because you put forth a idea that you will be asked to be the Chairma. Your High Priest will look for the best Chair for ay evet or program, regardless of who suggests it. Keep this i mid for the future. Musigs We have discussed may topics of the Royal Arch i this colum over the years, but there is much more that ca be leared ad iformatio coveyed to the Compaios. It is suggested that our Compaios make use of the Grad Lodge Chacellor Robert Livigsto Library to fid books o Royal Arch topics to research or just read about. Oce you register as a user you ca use the olie catalog of the library to fid books that meet your eeds ad check them out. The books are mailed to you ad you have them for about a moth, I believe. The oly cost is the book rate mailig to retur the book as log as you maitai the packagig so you ca reuse it. This is a great way of fidig resources ad readig more about the Royal Arch or the Craft i geeral. There are also readig programs ad I believe there is oe specifically for the Royal Arch. Upo completig a readig course, you receive a certificate statig that you did complete the course. It is iterestig to ote that the York Rite Bodies use swords i may of their Ceremoies ad Rituals, with the Commadary usig swords the most. This sword is a aciet weapo that was oly supplated by the firearm i the late Middle Ages ad early Reaissace Era. I our military, oly the Marie Corp still has a sword as part of the dress uiform, I believe, ad the ot wor very ofte. Why do we use swords? Well I Memoriam Micheer, William A. He was a 46-year member of Uity Lodge, Scottish Rite ad Damascus Shriers. Memories are like threads of gold; they ever tarish or grow old. it could be that we wat our Veils, Royal Arch Captai ad Captai of the Host to be armed to prevet the approach of cowas ad evesdroppers, much like the Tiler of a Lodge. The arms are ever used as fightig implemets ad are ot eve sharpeed for use i this regard. It is the ceremoy of salutig with a sword that we use the most. This is a aciet method of showig hoor for superior officers ad hoor amog similarly armed me meetig each other i friedship. Proper sword work durig the Opeig of a Chapter does add to the impressiveess of the Ceremoy ad Ritual. Excellet sword work is a pleasure to watch. If you are appoited to a Chapter Office that uses sword work, it is to your best advatage to lear it well. Why? If you progress to the Commadery, havig some kowledge of sword work will put you i a great positio to lear the Kights Templar exteded sword maual ad give you pleasure i participatio. Well, that s all for ow. We hope to see our Compaios at future Covocatios (meetigs) where kowledge of our Rite will be coveyed to exted you pleasure of beig a member of our great Chapter. We will ow embark o a multi-part history of the origis of the Order of the Temple-or Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ ad the Temple of Solomo. PART ONE The Origi of the Templars: The First Crusade We ca trace the begiigs of the Crusades to November 1095, whe Pope Urba II gathered the Coucil Of Clermot. Three hudred members of the clergy coveed uder his chairmaship. The pacifist, peaceful policies that had domiated Christedom i the previous 1000 years, was abadoed, layig the foudatios for the coquest. Pope Urba demaded that Christias stop the ifightig ad warrig amog themselves ad uite uder oe baer ad to free the holy lad from the Muslim Turks ad Arabs, ad to liberate Christiaity s sacred places that were beig desecrated (of course oe of this was true). Pope Urba also aouced that those who participated i the crusades would have all sis forgive. Thus, the exuberat crowd was distributed fabric crosses to emblazo their garmets, ad they dispersed to spread the word of the holy war ad the creatio of a massive crusader army. I the summer of 1096, this mob of self appoited crusaders set off i three separate groups, each takig a differet route to Costatiople, where they met up with oe aother. The Byzatie Emperor, Alexius I, did what he could to aid this force, comprisig 4,000 mouted kights ad 25,000 ifatry troops. Raymod IV of Sait-Gilles, Cout of Toulouse; Bohemod, Duke of Tarato; Godfrey of Bouillo; Hugh, Cout of Vermadoes; ad Robert, Duke of Normady commaded this Army. Bishop Ademar of le Puy, the close fried of Urba II, was their Spiritual leader. After rasackig ad settig fire to may settlemets ad puttig coutless Muslims to the sword, evetually the crusaders reached Jerusalem i After a siege of approximately five weeks, the city fell. Whe the victors fially etered Jerusalem, accordig to oe historia, They killed all the Saraces ad the Turks they foud whether male or female. Crusaders slaughtered everyoe they met ad looted everythig they could get their hads o. They murdered idiscrimiately those who had take refuge i the mosques, whether youg or old, ad devastated the Muslim ad Jewish holy sites ad places of worship settig the city s syagogues aflame, burig alive Jews who had hidde iside. This slaughter cotiued util o loger could they fid ayoe to kill. The first crusade eded with the fall of Jerusalem i After 460 years of Muslim rule, the Holy Lad came uder Christia cotrol. The crusaders established a Lati kigdom that stretched from Palestie to Atioch ad made Jerusalem its capital city. Thereafter, the crusaders bega strugglig to establish themselves i the Middle East. But to sustai the state they had fouded, they eeded to orgaize themselves ad to achieve this, they established uprecedeted military orders. Members of these orders had emigrated from Europe ad, i Palestie, lived a moastic life of sorts. At the same time, they traied for war agaist the Muslims. Oe of these orders wet dow a differet route, udergoig a chage that would sigificatly alter the course of history i Europe ad, evetually, the world: the Kights Templar.
