The Travellig Keystoe was made by W Bro Joh Frech, a AProvGM of the Provice of Surrey, ad preseted to Bod of Friedship Mark Lodge o 26 November 2016 at Croydo. So here it bega its jourey aroud the Provice of Surrey. Ay Lodge ca pla a raid o the Lodge that is i possessio to make a claim o the Travellig Keystoe ad take it back to their Lodge to put proudly o display. To obtai this privilege there must be three or more brethre. The Lodge with the most visitors at the meetig will make claim o the Travellig Keystoe ad, providig they have all siged the attedace book, they ca take it back to their Lodge after the meetig. The Travellig Keystoe has its ow passport ad its whereabouts withi the Provice will be publicised o the Website. The Lodge i possessio of the Travellig Keystoe at the time of the Aual Provicial Meetig will formally had over the Keystoe to the Provicial Grad Master at the meetig. At a later part of the proceedigs it will be preseted to the Mark Lodge with the most members attedig the Festive Board. It the starts its travels roud the Provice for aother year. The Provicial Grad Master s Commets By the time you read this we will have welcomed i 2017 ad I take this opportuity to wish you a happy, healthy ad prosperous New Year. Durig the past year I, or a member of the Executive, have visited every Lodge o the ight of their Mark Istallatio, accompaied by a good umber of Active Provicial Officers. I would like to thak all the Provicial Officers who have come alog to support us ad the Lodges that we have visited, as well as all of you for the warm welcome you have give to us all. As I previously stated, it is ot the wish of the Executive to iterfere with the ormal practices of the Lodge or to icur additioal costs for the Lodge. We have bee willig to give the Address to the Brethre, if asked, ad to assist i other ways. I hope that you have felt that these visits ehaced your meetig ad made it a special occasio for the brother beig istalled as Master. As you ca see from the iside pages, 2016 was a year for 50th aiversary celebratios. I, alog with members of the Provicial Executive, visited Coulsdo Lodge of Royal Ark Mariers i March ad i April the Weald of Surrey Lodge of Mark Master Masos. I October, I visited Addiscombe Lodge of Mark Master Masos ad i December Warligham Lodge of Mark Master Masos. At all of these aiversary meetigs I was well supported by a umber of Provicial Grad Officers, as well as havig the pleasure of receivig a umber of cheques towards the 2022 Festival, which were gratefully received. At the Aual Meetig i March I had the pleasure of appoitig VW.Bro. Richard Baker as Deputy Provicial Grad Master ad W.Bro. Joh Frech as Assistat Provicial Grad Master. Oce agai, I express my appreciatio to VW.Bro. David Blackbur, who stood dow as Deputy Provicial Grad Master at the meetig, for all the work he has doe for the Provice over may years. At the forthcomig Aual Meetig o the 18th March, to be held at the Croydo Masoic Hall, I will be appoitig W Bro Trevor Sadler as Provicial Grad Seior Warde, ad thak him for his cotributio as Provicial Grad Secretary. He will be succeeded by W.Bro. Tim Ford. The Provicial Grad Officers Mess Ope Eveig held at Nutfield i September was well supported ad Pat ad I had a most ejoyable eveig i the compay of those attedig. We are ow lookig forward to the Cha Di Da which will be held o Saturday the 1st of April 2017 at the Burford Bridge Hotel, Box Hill. Full details are o the back of this copy of the Overseer ad o the web site. As you are aware, the Mark Beevolet Fud 2022 Festival was formally lauched at Nutfield i May Uder the Chairmaship of W.Bro. David Else, assisted by W.Bro. Stewart Butcher our Provicial Grad Charity Steward, a umber of iitiatives are beig developed to support the Festival. More details of these ca be foud i their reports elsewhere i this editio. I our fud raisig activities, as i all our Mark Masory my wish is for everyoe to ejoy it. I would like to thak those members who have siged up for regular givig ad ask every member of our Mark Provice to cosider takig out a Regular Givig pledge to support the Festival. As a gesture of thaks a Gold pi is give to those who support i this way. Oe of the highlights of 2017 will udoubtedly be the Diaa Pricess of Wales MBF Charity Walk i Lodo o 6th May 2017, whe a team of six will represet the Provice i a walk of eight miles o a circular walk from Mark Masos Hall through four Lodo parks. I am certai that our members ad Lodges will wish to support the team ad the MBF, but most of all those who beefit from the fuds collected. Brotherly Love - Official Lauch of the 2022 Festival Our Provicial Grad Master, RW.Bro. Ia Clark, welcomed everyoe ad gave a itroductio about the Mark Beevolet Fud ad the history of the festivals withi Surrey. He gave comparisos betwee the moey raised from the first Festival i 1936 whe Col. Stuart Pleydell- Bouverie was the Chairma whe the amout raised was 8,651 11s 3p, ad our last festival which was hosted by the Rev. Neville Barker Cryer i 1987, whe the amout raised was 200, W.Bro. David Else the gave a heartfelt talk o his persoal experiece from visitig oe of the Hope for Tomorrow vehicles with other members of the Festival committee i April. The highlight, if you ca say that about a lady sufferig from cacer, was to see Ruth receivig her treatmet i a very calm ad stress free eviromet, i a fully equipped vehicle i a Tesco s car park i deepest Ket. For Ruth this was a god-sed; it meat she could drive 10 miutes to receive her treatmet with very little delay ad, more importatly, less stress. 4 The 2016 Aual Meetig of Provicial Grad Lodge Article by Chris Eley, photographs by Bob Tuthill ad Chris Eley The Aual Meetig of the Provicial Grad Lodge of Mark Master Masos of Surrey took place o the 21st March 2016 at the Fairfield Halls, Croydo, Surrey. Oce agai a team of willig voluteers gathered at the Fairfield Halls early that morig to set up the Temple ad the check-i area at the top of the mai staircase. From 1 pm Brethre of the Provice ad their guests started arrivig ad by 3.45 pm everyoe was seated i the Temple. Just after 3.50 pm the Brethre were called to order to receive the distiguished guests, icludig Right Worshipful Brethre ad past members of the Provicial Executive. The Worshipful Masters ad Worshipful Commaders the etered i processio. Fially, the etire meetig was called to order by W.Bro. Richard Kox, the Provicial Grad Director of Ceremoies, to receive the Provicial Officers of the year accompayig the Worshipful Assistat Provicial Grad Masters, the Worshipful Deputy Provicial Grad Master ad the RW Provicial Grad Master, led by the Provicial Grad Sword Bearer ad followed by the Provicial Grad Stadard Bearer. Provicial Grad Lodge was opeed i due form by the Provicial Grad Master who was saluted with seve uder the directio of the Provicial Grad Director of Ceremoies. The busiess of Provicial Grad Lodge commeced with the Provicial Grad Master idividually welcomig the may represetatives of other Provices ad Masoic Orders. After approvig the miutes of the previous meetig, which were available o the Provicial website ad the latest copy of the Surrey Overseer, those preset remembered our members who had passed to the Grad Lodge above sice the last aual meetig. Richard Baker, was Istalled ito the Chair of Brighthelmstoe Coucil of Royal ad Select Masters No. 15. There to support Richard were a umber of Surrey Mark Masos icludig our Provicial Grad Master, RW.Bro. Ia Clark, Assistat Provicial Grad Master, W.Bro. Chris Eley ad the past Deputy Provicial Grad Masters, VW.Bro. Michael Bares ad VW.Bro. David Blackbur, who is the District Grad Master of the District Grad Coucil of Surrey i the Order of Royal ad Select Masters. The meetig was held i the Sussex Masoic Cetre i Brighto. Preset at the meetig was the District Grad Master Desigate, Ill.Comp. Berard Marchat with his Escortig Officer. After Richard had bee istalled as the Thrice Illustrious Master he received ad ackowledged three Compaios as Super Excellet Masters, icludig Comp. Alastair Richardso, a member of Maor of Besham Lodge of Mark Master Masos. After the meetig the members of Brighthelmstoe Coucil ad their may guests sat dow to a spledid meal i the Sussex Masoic Cetre. I October, Terry Carpeter, Jim Turer ad I were ivited to the Commemoratio Lodge of Mark Master Masos by RW.Bro. Ia Clark ad VW.Bro. Michael Bares. The meetig was held i a uique veue, Mumbai Square, Middlesex Street i Lodo E1, a Idia Restaurat with a Temple upstairs. After a very short RAM meetig a Lodge of Mark Master Masos was opeed. I acted as Juior Overseer, Terry as Seior Overseer ad Jim as Seior Deaco. The Worshipful Master was preseted with a Mark Beevolet Fud Grad Patro Gold collaret by the Secretary, VW.Bro. Abraham Obadiah. After the Lodge was closed we died i a diig room adjacet to the Temple where we were treated to a spledid curry. All too soo we had to catch the bus back to Lodo Bridge to get our trai home. I October a umber of Surrey Mark Masos atteded the Aual Meetig of the Provicial Grad Lodge of Mark Master Masos of Middlesex. The meetig was held at the Royal Masoic School for Girls, Rickmasworth, Hertfordshire, ad was presided over by the Provicial Grad Master, RW.Bro. Richard Ga. The delegatio from Surrey icluded the Provicial Grad Master, the Deputy Provicial Grad Master, the two Assistat Provicial Grad Masters, the Provicial Grad Secretary ad the Deputy Provicial Grad Secretary. Also preset were a umber of Surrey Mark Masos who are also members of Middlesex Mark Lodges icludig W.Bro. Joh Billett of Colligwood Lodge of Mark Master Masos i Surrey ad Staies Lodge of Mark Master Masos i Middlesex, who was appoited Provicial Grad Director of Ceremoies. After the meetig the Mark Master Masos of the Provice of Middlesex ad their guests sat dow to a spledid meal i the diig room of the Royal Masoic School for Girls. I November, Joh Frech. Assistat Provicial Grad Master, ivited me to the Earl of Zetlad Chapter i Lodo where he was istalled ito the First Pricipal s Chair. The ceremoy was coducted by E.Comp. Michael Bares, Past Deputy Provicial Grad Master, i a faultless maer. I had the pleasure of explaiig all three Pricipals Robes ad Sceptres, as well as the First Pricipal s Scripture Readigs. Mark Guzam was istalled as Secod Pricipal ad Louis Keats as Third Pricipal. The Director of Ceremoies was E.Comp. Ia Clark, our Provicial Grad Master, ad the guests icluded David Blackbur, Past Deputy Provicial Grad Master, Ray Seeley, Provicial Grad Treasurer, Richard Kox, Provicial Grad Director of Ceremoies, Chris Cradock ad Richard Floyd. 6 Report of the Provicial Grad Treasurer Report of the Provicial Grad Registrar I have pleasure i submittig the Aual Accouts as Provicial Grad Treasurer, for cofirmatio by the members. The repleishmet of reserves, maily by reductio of costs, has cotiued. Furthermore, charges to Lodges for yearbooks were reduced from 70 to 25 per Lodge, particularly helpig Lodges with fewer members. The dues received i the year remaied at 6.00 per member for both Mark ad RAM. The overall membership umbers (Mark ad RAM together) declied from 1,823 to 1,788, with the cosequet small reductio i icome. The Surrey Overseer cotiued with oly oe issue, but further costs were saved because papers for the Aual Meetig were icluded i the Overseer. After icreased advertisig reveue, but reduced icome from yearbook sales to Lodges, et publicatio costs icreased from 940 to 2,399. Followig egotiatios with Fairfield Halls, the hall hire costs were reduced, ad with o separate pritig costs, there was a overall reductio i et costs of the Aual Meetig from 5,733 to 4,599. The overall surplus for the year came to 3,886, which icreases the Reserves to 11,742. This meas that Reserves are ow i excess of 10,000, the level held betwee 2007 ad 2009, which I set as a miimum level for the Provice to hold. I the ext fiacial year dues remai at 6 per member. I was budgetig for a break eve positio for the year 2016/17, but the closure of Fairfield Halls, ad the cosequet ecessity to chage the veue to Croydo Masoic Halls, will result i a further reductio of costs for the Provice ad a likely surplus for the year. Mark Provicial Grad Stewards Lodge No or Surrey Istalled Mark Masters Lodge No. 1219). I the RAM there are 594 Subscribig Members i the Provice of Surrey. Whe membership of more tha oe RAM Lodge i the Provice of Surrey is icluded this figure is 729 lodge memberships, (135 members belog to more tha oe RAM Lodge. E.g. Of these, 38 have Royal Ark Marier Lodges attached to them. 84% of subscribig members of a Surrey MARK Lodge are also subscribig members of a Surrey Royal Ark Marier Lodge, (80% last year). Report of the Provicial Grad Secretary My three years as Provicial Secretary have bee a very happy, rewardig ad gratifyig experiece, ivolvig a very rapid ad cotiuig learig curve, whilst beig metored by my predecessor RW.Bro. Ia Clark, to whom I give my sicere thaks. You may be aware that sadly over the last few years I have had some challeges dealig with my wife s rapidly deterioratig Alzheimer s disease. Fortuitously my duties as Provicial Secretary have, at times, had a therapeutic effect ad have bee a saviour to my saity. Durig my teure I regret that my opportuities to be out i the field visitig Lodges have bee somewhat restricted by my persoal circumstaces. Oce agai, my sicere thaks to the Executive Team for their patiece, guidace, help ad assistace durig this term. Also my appreciatio to all those Secretaries, Scribes ad others who have diligetly submitted their Aual Returs, Istallatio Returs ad Summoses o time ad properly completed. Without their support the Provice would ot be able to fuctio as well as it does. Report of the Provicial Grad Charity Steward I have bee a year i the role of Provicial Grad Charity Steward ad it is true to say that with the ew role comes may challeges. Oe such challege is to ecourage our members to sig up ad support the Mark Beevolet Fud Surrey 2022 Festival. As the ew boy o the block, I have spet a lot of time reviewig the way forward to esure 2017 will have some extra challeges as we will all be celebratig 300 years of Freemasory. The Iter Provicial Cricket match will be hosted this year by Surrey, at St Johs School Leatherhead. Surrey will ot oly be hostig the match but will also be lookig to recover the trophy from Sussex. The Mark Beevolet Fud will be hostig a walk aroud Lodo o Saturday 6th May 2017, our team cosistig of our Provicial Grad Master, Ia Clark, our Assistat Provicial Grad Masters, Chris Eley ad Joh Frech, our Provicial Grad Director of Ceremoies, Richard Kox, our Festival Secretary, Bill Barr ad our webmaster ad photographer, Bob Tuthill will be walkig 8 miles aroud the Lodo Parks all i aid of the 2022 Festival. 9 50th Aiversary Celebratios i the Provice of Surrey Article ad photographs by Chris Eley Coulsdo Lodge of Royal Ark Mariers No Addiscombe Lodge of Mark Master Masos No was a time of growth i the Mark Provice of Surrey with three Mark Lodges ad two Royal Ark Marier Lodges beig cosecrated by the PGM, RW.Bro. F T B Wheeler. The first was Coulsdo Lodge of Royal Ark Mariers No cosecrated at Croydo o February 7th at Croydo followed by the Weald of Surrey Lodge of Mark Master Masos No which was cosecrated o March 18th to meet at the Bull Hotel, Leatherhead. This was swiftly followed up by the formatio of the St. Adrew s Royal Ark Marier Lodge No. 806 at Farham o April 16th. O October 31st the Addiscombe Lodge of Mark Master Masos No was cosecrated at Croydo, ad a fortight later o November 14th there was also cosecrated the Warligham Lodge of Mark Master Masos No Celebratig these aiversaries has kept our PGM, members of his Executive, ad may Provicial Grad Officers very busy this year. The 50th Aiversary celebratios started i March 2016, whe Coulsdo Lodge of Royal Ark Mariers was hooured by a visit from RW.Bro. Ia Clark, PGM, accompaied by W.Bro. Chris Eley, Assistat PGM, ad a umber of Provicial Grad Officers of the year. The Worshipful Commader, W.Bro. Harry Hutchis, ProvRAMGR, welcomed the PGM ad the Provicial Officers. The Scribe read out the Warrat of the Lodge ad W.Bro. Arold Log gave a history of Coulsdo Lodge of Royal Ark Mariers. The RW PGM asked W.Bro. Trevor Sadler, Provicial Grad Secretary, to read the 50 Year Aiversary Warrat ad the preseted the Warrat to the Lodge. The last item o the ageda was for the Lodge to make a doatio of 500 towards the 2022 MBF Festival. This was gratefully received by the RW PGM. After the Lodge was closed the Brethre of Coulsdo Lodge ad their may guests sat dow to a most ejoyable festive board at the Croydo Masoic Hall. I April, the PGM, accompaied by the Deputy PGM, the two Assistat PGMs, ad a good umber of Provicial Grad Officers of the year visited the Weald of Surrey Lodge of Mark Master Masos No O the ageda was the istallatio of W.Bro. Barry Northmore as Worshipful Master. The Istallatio Ceremoy was performed by W.Bro. Steve Jarvis ably assisted by W.Bro. Kevi Woodward who explaied the sigs. Bro. Roger Davis preseted the Workig Tools of a Mark Master Maso to the Worshipful Master. The Keystoe Jewel was preseted to the Worshipful Master i a excellet maer by W.Bro. Paul Kerswell. The PGM the preseted the Worshipful Master, o behalf of the Lodge, with a 50 Year Certificate. To roud off a most successful meetig the Worshipful Master preseted the RW PGM with a cheque for 2,022 i support of the Mark Beevolet Fud 2022 Festival which was very gratefully received. After the Lodge was closed the Brethre of The Weald of Surrey Lodge ad their guests sat dow to a most ejoyable meal at the Sutto Masoic Cetre. This was the same meal as at the Cosecratio dier i March 1996 but ufortuately ot at the origial price of 2 guieas. I October, the PGM accompaied by VW.Bro. Richard Baker, Deputy PGM, W.Bros. Chris Eley, Assistat PGM, ad a umber of Provicial Grad Officers of the year visited Addiscombe Lodge of Mark Master Masos No O the ageda was the istallatio of W.Bro. Raymod Forster as Worshipful Master by W.Bro. Gary Bradley. The Address to the Master was give by W.Bro. Gary Bradley; to the Wardes by VW.Bro. Richard Baker; to the Overseers by W.Bro. Terry Carpeter ad to the Brethre by RW.Bro. Ia Clark. Afterwards the Worshipful Master thaked the members of the Executive ad Terry for assistig the Lodge. This special dier was presided over by our Provicial Grad Master RW.Bro. Ia N Clark, the veue oce agai beig the Nutfield Masoic Cetre. The eveig bega with a few driks at the bar followed by a lovely dier. The starter was Tempura Praws, mai course was Salmo Welligto with New Potatoes ad Seasoal Vegetables, followed by Fresh Fruit Salad. Durig the meal we were etertaied by table magicia Toy Peach who amazed everyoe with his magic. The service was well orgaised ad oly too soo the coffee arrived followed by the raffle which raised 245 towards the Surrey 2022 MBF Festival. The Provicial Grad Master rose to thak everyoe for their attedace ad support ad ecouraged Mess members to spread the word so as to esure ew Provicial Officers ot oly joi the Mess but also atted regularly as it is a fabulous etworkig opportuity with two orgaised opportuities to mix freely with your peers. Roy Miller at the age of 92 was istalled the Chair of the Lodge. There to see Roy istalled was the Provicial Grad Master, members of the Executive preset ad past, alog with may Heads ad Executive Members of Other Orders i Surrey. After a short Royal Ark Marier meetig a Lodge of Mark Master Masos was opeed ad the Provicial Grad Master, RW.Bro. Ia Clark, etered accompaied by the Assistat Provicial Grad Master, W.Bro. Chris Eley, ad a umber of Provicial Grad Officers of the year. The Worshipful Master ivited W.Bro. Tim Ford to coduct the ceremoy of istallatio. W.Bro. David Wills was ivited to occupy the Seior Warde s Chair, W.Bro. Richard Wilema the Juior Warde s Chair ad W.Bro. Stephe Digvea to act as Ier Guard. Not oly is Roy a well respected Maso he is also a much decorated WW2 Royal Naval Vetera who this year was asked to participate i The Royal British Legio s special appeal. At the Festive Board i respose to the Toast to the Worshipful Master W.Bro. Roy told the story of his visit to Dowig Street to see the Prime Miister, Theresa May. Roy Miller, ad Stewart Harris, 32, made the aual visit to Dowig Street o behalf of The Royal British Legio to offer the Prime Miister a opportuity to doate for a poppy. Veteras Roy ad Stewart both featured i this year s Poppy Appeal campaig which was ivitig the public to Rethik Remembrace ad to challege the commoly held view that the poppy ad Remembrace are associated oly with the First ad Secod World Wars ad elderly veteras. Prime Miister Theresa May said It was a absolute pleasure to meet two of the may veteras who have made such sacrifices to keep us safe. The Royal British Legio does fatastic work i supportig former ad servig Armed Forces persoel across all geeratios ad I am delighted to make a cotributio to such a worthy cause. O Friday 8th April 2016, 137 merrymakers cosistig of Surrey Mark Master Masos ad their frieds ad families desceded o the Burford Bridge Hotel ear Box Hill for the ChaDiDa The hotel, origially the Fox ad Houds, was built i 1254 ad parts of the preset buildig date back to its refurbishmet i 16th Cetury. Famous guests have icluded Quee Victoria, Jae Auste, William Wordsworth, Richard Sherida ad Robert Louis Steveso. I 1817 Joh Keats stayed at the hotel where the gardes proved just the ispiratio he eeded to complete his epic poem Edymio. The words of that poem live o i the hotel as they are embroidered o the covers of two outsized armchairs i receptio. The ChaDiDa 2016 was held i the adjoiig Tithe Bar built i the 16th Cetury i the eighbourig village of Abiger Hammer putatively from beams salvaged from ships of the Spaish Armada. As part of aother hotel restoratio i 1934 the bar was relocated to the hotel grouds ad a outdoor swimmig pool was added. ChaDiDa 2016 supports the 2022 Festival i aid of the Mark Beevolet Fud. The fud is a Registered Charity providig support to atioal ad local charities ad admiisterig relief to Mark Master Masos ad their depedets i times of eed. W Bros Dr Miguel Godfrey, ad Mick Mello with his wife Gill, arrived at the hotel at 2.15 pm to decorate the tables, test the soud ad pi up the table plas ad posters. Thaks to our web master, Fracis Dolevy ( we had a strikig ChaDiDa 2016 poster desig. Emma Holliday ad her hotel team did a fatastic job i settig a beautiful atmosphere for the evet. The fiishig touch was the table decoratios which was a team effort with Miguel sourcig had blow vases (i Mark red) ad glass beads (i Mark light blue), Gill makig a early trip to florists to select the best flowers addig rosemary raided from Miguel s garde ad Mick joiig to form a productio lie turig out sixtee cetrepieces ad three raffle prizes that looked amazig. The eveig kicked off at 7pm with receptio driks i a private bar ad louge hosted by the Provicial Grad Master Ia Clark ad his wife Patricia accompaied by may members of the Provicial Executive preset ad past. At 7.45 the maître d hôtel called everyoe i to die ad each oe was persoally greeted by the Provicial Grad Master ad his wife. The followed a divie dier. After the meal, thaks to the geerosity of may of the guest who brought prizes, we held a raffle which raised the magificet sum of 875. This was followed by the best ever see auctioeer W Bro Joh Frech who, alog with doatig the prize of bed ad breakfast i the Four Seasos Hotel i Hampshire, provided a great deal of etertaimet as well as raisig 450 o the ight. After dier we were joied by our excellet house bad L A Nights who supported our cause agai by performig for a cosiderably reduced fee ad got us all up dacig. All together the ChaDiDa 2016 raised a total of 2,000 towards the 2022 festival. A huge thak you goes to all of you who supported us geerally ad to the Surrey Mark Executive specifically for their support i makig ChaDiDa 2016 a truly memorable evet.
