2 2 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com Are you a fa of Broadway Musicals? I am! I have tried to work i a performace wheever I have had the opportuity to visit New York City. I would watch the Toy Awards to see what shows ad performers were cosidered the best. This iterest i theater goes back to whe I was a youth ad wet to see Charlto Hesto i a Summer Stock Theater productio of The Detective Story ad Ady Griffith i No Time for Sargeats i the City. I laughed so hard, I early fell out of the balcoy. I leared, the, that I preferred the more etertaiig shows over the dramas that made me thik ad, sometimes, feel ucomfortable. That is how I feel as I write this. From Spamalot, a variatio of the old Moty Pytho shows o TV, with some of the same writers/creators, comes the sog, Always Look o the Bright Side of Life. While this has bee a great, if hot, Summer i the Rochester area, it has bee tough to look o the bright side of life. I ve lost a few good relatives, Brothers ad frieds, oce agai, ad it s gettig tougher to watch the eveig ews programs! Califoria is burig up. We have a so livig there ad, so far, his area has ot bee directly affected but we stay tued. Louisiaa ad Texas are drowig! Ca someoe figure out a way to tilt the globe so we ca sed the rai to Califoria to put out the fires ad reduce their drought coditios? I fid it heart-wrechig to watch the people stadig i the street i frot of what was their home, viewig the ashes or the rubble. I ca t imagie their pai. They are alive, but a life-time of their treasures are oly memories. Seseless deaths - shootigs, stabbigs, the bombigs i Syria, - our Service Persoel still i harm s way i Afghaista ad Iraq. May other sad stories that could be told. There is some good ews, too! The woma who provided ad solicited fas for a seior livig facility, where the hot temperatures were draiig their eergy, is amog them. You ca look at the facig page to get some other local good ews. Look at the bright, smilig faces of our Studet Grat recipiets. There is so much hope i their lives ad dreams. They are our future! Ad the future looks pretty good! I do t wat to forget the groups that solicit our Charity Grats either. There is so much good i the hearts of their supporters ad the work they do, especially providig food for those i eed. We Masos (ad frieds) ca be proud of our efforts, as small as they may seem i the scheme of thigs. We eed to keep up the good work! Camp DeMolay. Sodus Poit, NY Oly half a doze dates were booked at Camp DeMolay this Summer as this facility cotiues to be uder used. District Cosolidatio A remider to all our Brothers. At the 2016 Grad Lodge Commuicatio, it was aouced that the Geesee-Wyomig ad Livigsto Districts were merged ito the ew Letchworth District. The DDGMs, Staff Officers ad AGLs for both Districts had already bee chose. Because of this, Grad Lodge decided that for the Appoitmets, the Letchworth District will have two DDGMs, Staff Officers ad AGLs. The ew District has bee divided evely betwee, the ew Grad Lodge Officers with half of each of the Lodges i the previous old Districts beig the resposibility of the Co-DDGMs. Some of the Brothers from Olive Brach are goig to do some travelig to the other Lodges i the ew District to meet our ew Brothers ad get reacquaited with some of our log time Brothers. We received some disappoitig ews over the Summer. The Masoic Times will cease publishig with the December 2016 issue. It was primarily a fiacial decisio. Due to the decliig membership of the Fraterity, the subscriptio price was ot coverig publishig costs. It would require beig subsidized Pre-Need & Medicaid Plaig Fueral & Crematio Services Memorial Evet Plaig David P. Crawford Licesed Maager 495 N. Wito Road Rochester, NY (Betwee Browcroft & Humboldt) (585) by the Masoic Service Bureau, which the Board of Directors decided ot to approve. Our Master, W\ Jack Flit; Seior Warde, W\ David Beswick; ad Secretary, R\W\ Neil Bedford, have decided that, at some poit this year, we will start publishig a Olive Brach mothly ewsletter. We would prefer that this ewsletter be set out electroically due to the extra cost ecoutered for mailig them. I order to do this, we would appreciate it if you would sed your address to: olivebrachumber39@gmail.com To the Brothers who do ot have , we will mail the ewsletter to you. NorthStar Project Grad Lodge has implemeted the NorthStar Project a ew Program outliig how ad whe to accept Petitios from prospective ew members. Uder this system, you do ot just had out a Petitio to the prospective members. Over a four-moth period, you have to iterview the prospective member four times ad his family oce before decidig to offer or ot offer him a Petitio. That is the short form explaatio. W\ David Beswick, our Seior Warde, has writte a more iformative report ad it will be set with our first ewsletter. As always, please try to atted Lodge ad support your ewly Elected ad Appoited Officers. Area 15 Brotherhood Fud Chairma W Melvi Hussey mhussey486@ aol.com (315) I am writig this report o a hot July ight. Nights seem to stimulate thikig. My thoughts wet back to whe I joied a Masoic Lodge i I had bee asked three times i two years to joi. Whe I fially releted it was with, Great, all I eed is aother meetig to go to. It was the I said to myself, Now that I m here, I might as well do somethig with it. Freemasory is arguably the greatest Fraterity i the world. Their motto is, to make good me better. That goes alog with, ask ot what your Coutry ca do for you; ask what you ca do for your Coutry. It is absolutely o differet tha beig a Free ad Accepted Maso. It takes a Applicatio fee, Degree work ad Aual Dues to become a Maso. Assumig September 2016 you are ear your Lodge it takes a certai commitmet to make the meetigs. If you do t take part i Masoic doigs, how are you goig to become a better ma through Masory? I ve foud through the years, the love of labor with the Craft to be fulfillig to where it has irrevocably chaged my life for the better. I doig so, my Aual Lodge Dues plus my Brotherhood Fud cotributio each year equal my Lodge s real Aual Dues! They are iseparable. My Brothers, we are agai at the begiig of aother Masoic Year a opportuity to make ourselves better through Masoic teachigs. I caot say it eough make your meetigs, visit earby Lodges ad make a ote to be preset at your District s mothly meetigs. I promise that you ll ever regret it, especially i later years. The Homeless Ma I was walkig dow the street whe I was approached by a smelly, shabby-lookig homeless ma who asked me for moey. I took out a $10 bill ad said to him, I ll give you this moey if you will buy beer rather tha food with it. I gave up drikig years ago, said the homeless ma. Will you use it to go fishig the? No, I do t waste my time fishig. Will you sped it o hutig equipmet? I asked. Are you uts? I have t huted i years! Well the, I m takig you home to a dier made by my wife. Wo t she be mad? said the homeless ma? Yes, but do t worry. It s importat for her to see what a ma looks like after he has give up drikig, fishig ad hutig. 5 September 2016 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com 5 Moroe District District Deputy Grad Master R\W\ STEPHAN P. MICHENER smichee@rochester.rr.com Grad Director of Ceremoies R\W\ JOSEPH E. BOURCY III jbourcy3@hotmail.com Assistat Grad Lecturer V\W\ LANCE J. DAUL lace.daul@gmail.com District Deputy Grad Master Moroe District R W Stepha P. Micheer smichee@rochester.rr.com It s time to get back to work i the quarries of our Lodges. We have bee charged with the task of makig ourselves better me. I order to do that, we eed Lodges i which to fuctio. A vital part of ay Lodge is commuicatio. Commuicatio of iformatio is the lifeblood of ay orgaizatio. A Lodge MUST commuicate with its members ad Masters of Lodges are i the positio of resposibility for makig sure that happes whether they do it themselves or assig a Brother to do it. Estimates are that oly percet of a Lodge s members atted meetigs o a regular basis. That leaves percet of members who, for whatever reaso, may ot get to Lodge. It is critical that those Dues-payig, ivisible members are ot forgotte ad that they receive regular commuicatio from the Lodge. The Masoic Times is the best tool for doig this. Every moth this publicatio arrives at your home ad provides iformatio about all the goigso i the Masoic World i our Regio. All that iformatio is foud i oe place - i the pages of this ewspaper which you hold i your hads. Ad you get that iformatio for ONLY a dollar a issue. That is a icredible bargai! It s also easy ad coveiet. Yes, there is , Facebook pages ad websites, but ot every Brother uses those forms of commuicatio. Also, it is very easy to overlook regular access to , Facebook page or website. That oe from the Lodge ca easily get lost i the 500 s i the ibox. Electroic commuicatios are easily missed i the myriad distractios of a computer or smart phoe. As the sayig goes, Out of sight, out of mid. Like the rough ad smooth Ashlars we have i every Lodge, which we ca touch ad feel i order to uderstad the cocept of our trasformatio as me, so, too, is that physical hard copy of the Masoic Times. We ca hold it, read it, mark it up ad tur its pages as we see what s goig o. It serves as a physical remider of everythig our Masoic World has to offer as we pla what to do. Heck, we ca eve take it ito the bathroom! I would urge every Lodge to cotiue to support the Masoic Times through subscriptios for your members. It is ot a burdesome cost i your aual budget. Istead, it s a ivestmet i a commuicatio tool with your members, which is a ivestmet i the lifeblood ad logevity of your Lodge. I hope to be able to brig Masoic Light throughout our District this year ad live up to the stadard those icredible Brothers who have bee i this positio before me have set. I wat to make this year a elighteig ad educatioal oe. I will most certaily promise to help brig Light to all Brothers. At our Schools of Ritual I will strive to make sure everyoe walks away with ew iformatio or perspective o our Ritual. I will also focus o more esoteric subjects icludig the spirituality of our Ritual. Our Ritual is what sets us apart from a multitude of other service orgaizatios. Without it, we could just as easily be a Rotary, Kiwais or Lio. Without it, there would be o Freemasory. This is why it is so importat to ot oly have it memorized, but to also uderstad it o deeper levels. Should we perform like a automato - regurgitatig the work without kowig the value or meaig of what we just performed? V\W\ Lace J. Daul Appoited Assistat Grad Lecturer for Moroe District Lace Daul was raised i Northfield Lodge i Jauary of Durig , Lace served as Master of Northfield Lodge. He also affiliated with Clio Lodge. Havig the Ritual memorized is just the first step. You truly ow the Ritual whe you are able to memorize it ad are coscious of the value cotaied therei. I certaily still have a log way to go o the path to memorize all our Ritual ad a eve loger oe to fid all the value cotaied withi those words. 6 6 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com Moroe District Membership Developmet By W\ Bruce Katz, District Chair A corerstoe of our success as a Fraterity is our ability to help Brothers get the most they ca out of their membership ad to build themselves as better me. Idividual Lodge Leadership ad the idividual Brothers have key resposibility for their Masoic growth ad the Membership Developmet Committee is a opportuity to assist i this. I have spoke with several Brothers about expadig this Committee to havig active Brothers i each Lodge. Brigig i ew members i a orgaizatio that does ot solicit for membership is a uique challege. Retaiig Brothers who previously did t kow much about our Fraterity util after Iitiatio is aother log-time challege (a Short Talk Bulleti from 1923 o this topic reads as if it were writte today!). We will succeed, however, by our diligece i guardig the West Gate, ad sicerely welcomig our ew Brothers. The NorthStar Program (icludig Lodges adoptios of its priciples ad adaptatios of its processes) should help potetial Cadidates better uderstad what is ivolved with our Fraterity to help them make a better decisio about submittig a Petitio. Commuicatio is oe of the keys to retetio. Oe of the ways that Masters ad Lodges have commuicated to Brothers has bee through the Masoic Times. With the impedig discotiuatio of its publicatio, ew ways will be eeded to support the importace of commuicatios. Masters ad Wardes are ecouraged to actively participate i Masters ad Wardes ad share best practices ad cocers. Oe of our key opportuities lies i the fact that every Brother has made the promise to improve myself i Masory. This takes may forms. For some, it is commuity service, preparig a meal at Roald MacDoald House, repairig a moumet i a cemetery, learig a piece of Ritual, visitig or phoig a Brother, persoal Masoic readig, helpig a ew Brother lear Questios ad Aswers, or discussig life s challeges. Each of these requires a actio to actually DO somethig Log Pod Road South of Maide Lae The upcomig year, 2017, is the Tri-Ceteary of the formatio of the first Grad Lodge i Lodo. Aiversary years are importat milestoes to egage us to reflect o the past ad to look forward to the future. Have we lived up to the hopes ad dreams of those Brothers who came this way before us? If give the chace, how would you have re-lived the past, whether it is the past year or past 20 years? We are blessed with the opportuity of the begiig of each ew day to restore our jourey o a better path ad equally blessed with the opportuity to share our experieces as metors to those begiig the same paths that we have already travelled. What does it mea to be a Maso? The aswer depeds o the idividual. But, above all, make sure it meas somethig special to you. My thaks to R\W\ George Foeher for appoitig me, ad to R\W\ Steve Micheer for re-appoitig me, to the Chair positio for Masoic Developmet for Moroe District. Pediatric Developmetal Program By Lawrece Kapla, MD Dr. Lawrece Kapla, Neurodevelopmetal Pediatricia, joied Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Sprigfield i October, Referrals cotiue to grow, reflectig a wide rage of developmetal questios. After a year of program buildig ad resource idetificatio, we would like to provide you with more specific guidace i aswer to your frequetly asked questios: Frequetly Asked Questios from Primary Care Do you see childre with autism disorders ad/or to rule out autism? "I would like to cotiue to cofigure this program to be a true comprehesive Child Developmet Cliic cosistet with the curret America Boards of Pediatrics ad Developmetal-Behavioral Pediatrics defiitio of the field ad the populatios it serves. That populatio may iclude autism disorders, the most commo developmetal cocer we have today, ad we are absolutely committed to seeig those childre. To facilitate a more iformed processig of referrals, we ask, however, that referrals come from the primary care provider or Early Itervetio Team. Parets should discuss their cocers with their primary care providers rather tha self-refer. This way we have importat prelimiary history which we will expad upo whe we see the child ad a relatioship with the Medical Home that becomes crucial should we see the child. We are ot ad caot be exclusively a Autism Assessmet Program per se. To be that at this poit ad to do that well, icludig educatioal cosultatio ad feedig support, especially exceeds right ow our staffig capacity ad expertise. From a "geeral developmetal/eurodevelopmetal service" stadpoit, ay child with ay disablig coditio which you, as a primary care provider, feel requires further assessmet ad maagemet, we welcome. Agai, this could iclude ot oly may of the childre typically see at Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Sprigfield, our host istitutio, but also those childre whose eeds are idetified i the commuity who may eed the expaded services that derive from a comprehesive assessmet. "I essece, the, our program at Shriers serves childre with a wide rage of developmetal cocers ad we are tryig to serve them all as we cotiue to grow as a program." What is your role i the care of childre with severe behavioral problems? "Whe the immediate eed is the assessmet ad maagemet of childre whose behavior puts them ad others at risk for harm, or sigificatly impacts day-to-day care at home -or for whom you believe represets sigificat pathology - we suggest referrig the child to a behavioral health specialist or cliic (child psychiatry, psychiatric social work, behavioral cliics, etc.) for stabilizatio ad appropriate treatmet. Oce this has take place ad there are ogoig or ew cocers that the atypical behavior represets a developmetal problem icludig, but ot limited to, autism spectrum disorder, commuicatio disorder cogitive or itellectual disability, the we would be happy to see them. "We rely, therefore, o the primary care medical home provider or Early Itervetio providers to make that determiatio. For questios about toiletig, sleep hygiee, commuicatio ad school performace, we would be happy to see those childre with the expectatio that they have bee evaluated to some degree by their primary care providers." Do you provide europsychiatric testig at Shriers Hospitals for Childre? "Curretly, we do ot have the expertise; however, we are curretly expadig the program to iclude the capacity to do more advaced psychometrics. We also cotiue to work with specialists i the commuity." Does psychometric testig have to be accomplished prior to iitiatig a referral to Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Sprigfield? "No; however, I would appreciate childre to have bee pre-screeed i the primary care provider office with the stadard developmetal screeig tests, examples beig PEDS, M-CHAT, Vaderbilt, Achebach, ad BASC." I geeral, youger patiets ted to have a more challegig disease course, but it is importat to kow that mild disease does ot always become more severe, ad every patiet's case is uique. It is a commo miscoceptio that there is a test for Lupus. The so-called ANA (for "ati-uclear atibody") is positive i almost all patiets with Lupus, but because it is positive i so may people without SLE it is ot a helpful test for makig the diagosis. The picic was a Bar-B-Que from Diosaur BBQ with extra sides supplied by the Compaios. It was a good time for all who atteded. A added evet was the presetatio to R\E\ Joh Zabel as the York Rite Maso of the Year by Geesee York Rite College No. 25. It was a surprise for Compaio Joh, but greatly appreciated by him. The July timeframe for the picic was a experimet to ot have the picic i Jue ad was ot as successful as we had hoped, so we will be makig some more chages for ext year. While they took a break from their regular meetigs, they atteded the State Represetative s Homecomig, which took place o Jue 18th i Liverpool. State Represetative, Aliso Wright, was welcomed by her Home Triagle of Bal- O-Se Triagle to a Westerthemed Degree ad collatio. I July, Seior Lady-i-Waitig, Haah, wet to the Orgaizatio of Triagles Leadership Weeked at Old Forge. To make this successful, we will be lookig for Masoic Brothers who are lookig for more out of Masory ad ca fid it i the York Rite Degrees. We will be usig the Phoevite system we started usig last year to iform the Compaios of upcomig meetigs ad evets. We fid this is a good way to remid everyoe what is happeig so they ca pla to atted or be remided that there is somethig iterestig comig. The cost is omial ad fits well withi our budget. There are may o-speakig parts i our Degrees that ay Compaio ca step ito, easily. By beig ivolved, you will lear more about our Rite ad its teachigs. Give it a try. Musigs There is a ew Masoic book out for New York Freemasory. It is Symbols i the Wilderess, Early Masoic Survivals i Upstate New York, by Joscely Godwi ad Christia Goodwillie; published by Richard W. Couper Press of Hamilto College Library ad Upstate Istitute of Colgate Uiversity. I got a copy from the Livigsto Library table at St. Joh s Day i Utica. The book is about the Masoic art that was doe i Lodge buildig prior to Most of the Lodges talked about are betwee Albay ad Aubur. The cotet has pictures of the art that still exists i old Masoic Lodge buildigs, some of which still house a Lodge. What does this have to do with the York Rite? As it turs out, there was much Royal Arch imagery put i Lodge buildigs i the early part of the 19th Cetury. Oe of the places pictured ad described is Scorpio Lodge No. 110 i Aurora. I have bee i the buildig ad was amazed that the Lodge Hall cotais a plethora of Royal Arch imagery ad implemets. If you get the opportuity to visit the Lodge, do; you wo t regret the experiece. The buildig was built i 1819 by Aurora Chapter, but they ra ito fiacial problems ad ivited Scorpio Lodge to joi with them. Aurora Chapter is goe, but the buildig ad Scorpio Lodge still exist. I believe that Kig David Chapter may be movig to Aurora for their meetigs, a spectacular place for a Royal Arch Chapter to meet. The book lists other Lodge buildigs ad, i may of them, there is defiite Royal Arch imagery, so there must have bee a Chapter that met i the Lodge hall i the early 1900s. I would recommed the book to ay Maso iterested i Masoic history of New York. If you are iterested i the book, cotact Joh Zabel for the ISBN umber, or look it up o Amazo.
