It s your hard work ad dedicatio to the Campaig that you have show every year that makes me very proud. 2 2 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com April 2016 I wo t do THAT agai! At least ot util I have exhausted all other potetial chages to a issue of the Masoic Times to fit submitted articles ito the available space. What am I talkig about? You did t miss it? There was o caledar last moth! As I attempted to assemble the text, it was evidet that I was ot able to fill our regular 20-page issue. The ext stadard i our busiess is a 16- page issue. That meat a little over oe page of material had to be elimiated. The largest ad easiest part to go, was the caledar. But boy, did I hear about it from may of you. I ve ever bee sure that the amout of space devoted to the caledar was worthwhile. So may of the days each moth have little or othig o them, that the caledar almost seemed to be a waste of space. For ow, my goal will be to keep it a full page, ad reduce it to the oldstyle half a page whe we are uder duress! By the way, that was t all that I left out. There were o Memorials ad o Editor s Corer, uless you caught the photograph of the editor recliig o a pool-side louge chair. That was posed, I might add, as a bit of a joke. I spet very little time o vacatio recliig ad too much time at the computer tryig to fialize the issue! There was a rare submissio, also. A Letter to the Editor, which did t make it last moth but, with a bit of revisio, is published elsewhere o this page. I m ot solicitig commets or accolades, but I prited this because it thaks three me who have worked very hard - very diligetly - o behalf of the Fraterity durig their terms. I kow because I had the privilege of workig beside them o several occasios, possibly more so tha ay other Grad Lodge Team of the past doze years. We did t always agree, but we got thigs doe! So George, Steve, Roy - Right Worshipfuls - I thak you, too! To Art Maso, thaks for brigig that case to our attetio ad the the follow-up story. The Masoic Service Bureau jumped at the chace to help, as did Lodges ad idividual Brothers. While the circumstaces were upleasat, we were there to provide aid. Maybe you could tell by the weight of the paper you are holdig, or maybe you looked for the caledar ad saw that it was o Page 16. Yep, we have aother light issue. This moth, I did t eve have to leave aythig out. I case you missed it... Thaks for readig. February 29, 2016 Dear Br. Editor: Havig reviewed February s Masoic Times today, I am impelled to humbly ad sicerely submit these commets. Side Degrees are Degrees put together ad coferred after meetigs of State Grad Lodges. The Degree was origially called, The Aciet Hoorable Rite of Humility. The ame Tall Cedar Degree does ot appear, except as a possible shorteed versio of the aforemetioed util it was adopted as the title of the er s articles submitted to this publicatio last moth. He is both Grad Steward, ad Most Wise of the Kights of Rose Croix of the Scottish Rite. I his capacity as Officer i the latter Cocordat Body, he has produced, i my opiio, oe of the most accurately descriptive ad well-writte pieces about the Feast of the Pascal Lamb that I have ever read. From what we surmise is that the Degree was a form of hazig which could be take by ay Brother who was willig to receive it. It was t util about the 1850s that a Dr. Thomas J. Corso, from New Jersey, started coferrig the Degree as he had received it i Philadelphia. After the death of Dr. Corso i 1879, the Tall Cedars Degree was put o by a Doctor Steves, who orgaized the first regular Degree Team ad coferred the Degree i Several Cities ad tows i New Jersey. Glassboro, NJ, seems to be the ceter of the early Tall Cedars activity ad i 1887, Dr. Steves ad his Degree Team coferred the Degree o Frak W. Bowe, Orlado M. Brow ad 13 other have see. It is simply spoto, as we say today, ad might be used as a template for future such articles. Secod, R\W\ Steve s article as Grad Steward is extremely well writte. Past s represet a log liear structure of Lodge leadership, ad by virtue of that, possess a body of kowledge that is sigificat, ad looked at as exemplary for all Lodge Masos. However, the coveyace of that kowledge is key. I humbly suggest that we Past s carefully cosider offerig opiios Cadidates. This Charter Group was part of the foudig Brothers who formed the Tall Cedars of Lebao. It was o May 24, 1901, that a group of 54 Masos who received the Degrees i Glassboro, NJ, gathered to watch the coferral o 53 Brothers from Glassboro, Clayto, Williamstow, Mauta, Woodbury ad Philadelphia. This group, together with Frak Bowe, gathered i Treto, NJ, the State Capital, o March 18, 1902, for the purpose of establishig a Frateral Order to be kow as the Tall Cedars of Lebao of America for fu, frolic ad fellowship. By icorporatig, they could elimiate the haphazard, disorgaized methods of coferrig the Degrees ad stabilize ad preserve them as a worthwhile ceremoy. Degree work is comig to a ed ad, hopefully, Seior Wardes who are expectig to advace to s of their Lodges are workig with their s o puttig together a Trestleboard for the comig Year. How time flies. The ew District Deputy, District Staff Officer ad AGL have begu traiig ad gettig advice for their upcomig Terms of Office. Preparatio is the KEY actio that all icomig Officers have to address i order to have a successful year. There are two areas of preparatio that I feel are lackig i the District. Whe Istallatio of Officers takes place i Jue, each Elected Officer ad Ap- poitee are charged with ot oly the resposibility of the positio to which they have bee elected or appoited, but they are also advised that they are expected to fulfill the duties ad resposibilities of the ext seior positio. How may of you are prepared for THAT? How may of you are prepared to just fulfill the duties of the positio you agree to take? The first meetig i September is too late!! The purpose of Stewards ad s of Ceremoy is to getly prepare Brothers to lear small portios of the Ritual ad look forward to the ext higher positio ad ext larger portio of work without the beefit of a crib sheet. No ope books or crib sheets, except the Moitor, belog i the Lodge Room durig a meetig. Memorizatio is tough. I kow it ad I have to work at it myself. I make mistakes ad I try to correct them. Sometimes I wi ad sometimes I lose, but I keep tryig. I see some throughout the District who try ad wi, also. Maybe ot all the way but they keep tryig. There are others who oly try part way ad THAT has to chage. If YOU have trouble learig ad eed help, ASK for it. If you kow a Brother who eeds help, OFFER it. We all became Masos for various reasos. We might have admired someoe who was a Maso. Someoe i the family, (Father, Ucle, Brother, etc.) may have bee a Maso ad you wated to follow i their footsteps. Whatever the reaso, you chose Masory ad ALL that goes with it. Memorizatio ad good Ritual Work are critical parts. You probably cried whe you were a little kid whe the alphabet, umbers, spellig, arithmetic were drummed ito you ad you said I ca t. Well, you are all grow up ow, ad I say you CAN. I am ot a Ritualist ad I do t preted to be; however, if you eed help i learig a part or parts, I may be able to help. Your Lodge or mie. Coffee ad April 2016 Charity. See you ext moth. Well, I have t heard much from you or my Brothers at the Lodge i a while either. It seems like I oly hear from the Lodge whe it s time to pay my Dues. Like you, I took my Degrees ad was fasciated by them ad deeply moved by the high ideals ad beauty of the Ritual. I do wish I uderstood what it meas a little more. For a while I eve helped out with puttig o a few Degrees. That was fu except whe a Brother (who shall remai ameless) criticized me for missig a couple of words. After comig to several Lodge meetigs, I oticed there were a few Brothers who did t seem to get alog too well. So much for harmoy beig the support of all istitutios. There were frequet argumets i the Lodge betwee some of the old timers ad it seemed like there were factios i the Lodge that were at war with oe aother. I did t wat to take sides, but oe of the Brothers was always tellig me how awful aother Brother was. It got tirig havig my ear talked off by this Brother. Sometimes, as a ewer member, I did t thik aybody cared about what was goig o with me. A lot of Brothers have excessively istructive togues, but ot very attetive ears. I got to see how a few Worshipful s ra the Lodge. Some were pretty good ad others ot so much. A lot of them seemed to let the ru the meetig. All too frequetly, plas seemed to chage at the last miute ad the Lodge had o clear directio. Ufortuately, after too may meetigs to cout, I walked out realizig I had t leared aythig ew. Most of the meetigs seemed to get bogged dow i excessive mudae busiess matters. Ofte it seemed like obody was i charge. The oly program I remember was the Lodge History Program. I remember it because the same Brother did it like clockwork every year. I see you have it scheduled agai this year. Other tha that program, I ca t recall ay others. Here, though, I must admit I ever offered myself to do a program for the Lodge either. So I ll cotiue to pay my Dues because I like the idea of beig a Maso ad I keep hopig some Brother will reach out to me. I will close this letter by askig you a questio What are you ad the other Brothers goig to do to covice me that comig to Lodge will be worth my time? Topics iclude such thigs as Masoic Law ad the structure of Grad Lodge, writte commuicatios, public speakig, leadership, ruig meetigs, budgetig ad what to expect durig Official Visits. Oh, ad oe more thig. Plaig a Trestleboard ad PROGRAMS!!! I my opiio the most importat task a Lodge must deliver, is havig quality Masoic Programs at every meetig. However, I would make the case that there should be at least a brief (-miute) Program o a budget meetig ight. Every other meetig should have a Program. Sice I have bee a member of our beautiful Fraterity, I have heard the battle cry of Programs, Programs, Programs. Why, the, are there still some Lodges who isist o holdig borig busiess meetigs? 9 April 2016 Website: Gage Never Strikes Out Te-year-old Gage loves baseball ad the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has bee playig baseball sice he was four ad has eve met his favorite Pirate, Neil Walker. You would ot kow it by his beamig smile ad upbeat persoality, but he has faced may obstacles. Gage was bor with Tibial Hemimelia, which meas that he was missig the shiboe i his right leg. Doctors immediately referred him to Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Erie where it was quickly determied that his leg would eed to be amputated just above the kee. Just after Gage s 1st birthday, he received his first prosthetic leg ad bega to walk at sevetee moths. But that was just the begiig. At age 3, Gage was oce agai hospitalized, this time for a almost fatal case of Bacterial Meigitis. Gage uderwet spial ad brai surgery to relieve pressure i his brai due to scar tissue formatio. At the time, his eurosurgeo said it was a miracle that he survived ad that he did so with o permaet damage. Although Gage loves playig baseball, it has ot always bee easy for him. He has had to prove himself over ad over agai. Recetly he was told What s New i Erie he could ot move up a level i his poy baseball league ot because he was t good eough, but because he had a difficult time durig his evaluatio. He was t as graceful as the other players or quite as fast due to his prosthetic leg, but he was more tha capable. This devastated both Gage ad his parets. But through all this, Gage has ever give up. I fact, his trials have oly made him stroger. Gage recetly atteded the Wouded Warrior Amputee Softball Team Kids Camp. At this Camp, he worked alogside other childre with amputatios ad/or missig limbs. Durig this weeklog camp, Gage leared ot oly the fudametals of the game, but also there are may other kids just like him ad that o matter what challeges he has i his life, he should ever give up... Life Without A Limb Is Limitless. I Gage s te years of life, he has edured so much more tha may do i a lifetime, but Gage s mom, Kelli, says everythig that we have bee through has made us who we are ad has made our family stroger ad closer. Gage is curretly te years old ad is a active ad very happy fourth grader. I ejoy it cosiderably ad part is i aticipatig it. To see Brothers we have t see i a while is a joy. To be re-acquaited with the moral buildig blocks of the Scottish Rite, really Wester Civilizatio, is part of our growth as me, part of our cotiuig icremetal improvemet. Life o earth is oly so log. Postpoig this activity util you have more time seems less tha wise. Make the time for that which you will ejoy ad that which will beefit you ad your family ad acquaitaces i so may ways. O Saturday, April 16th, at the Damascus Shrie Ceter, 979 Bay Road i Webster, the Sprig Reuio of the Scottish Rite will take place. Do what you eed to do to atted. If you have t submitted a Petitio, do so. If you foolishly dimitted, correct the mistake ad re-affiliate. Some parts of life are supposed to be serious as well as ejoyable. Such is our Scottish Rite ad this Reuio. I also look forward to our Reuio Baquet that we have oce a year. This year it will be o May 7th at Cobblestoe Creek Coutry Club i Victor. It is a very ice place. If you are a ew member i the Ill\ Stephe Whittaker, 33 Active, Class, your dier is icluded i your Iitiatio Fee. If you are already a member, the price is a good deal. We subsidize the price so you get more tha you pay for. It is ice to have a good turout to welcome our ew members, hoor our Class Sposor, Ill\ Stephe Whittaker, 33 Active, ad socialize with our members ad ladies. If you have t atteded i a few years, please cosider attedig this year. You will ejoy it. I will be pleased to celebrate with you. Joiig the Scottish Rite was oe of the best thigs I ever did. I ejoy it immesely. You do have to participate, though, to fid the ejoymet. You fid i the Scottish Rite the joy of our humaity. I uderstad that i a world where people sped eight, te or more hours a day usig textig, the iteret, TV movies, etc., we offer somethig differet. It will seem strage to may to uplug for a little while ad iteract with people. To uderstad how we, as Americas, come to be where we are, you eed to coect with people ad uderstad how our Degrees ad core values are really that of our Coutry ad Wester Civilizatio. You could go through life without iteractio with the Scottish Rite. You could live as a ma by yourself ot cocered with improvemet ad our huma experiece. You have the right to decide to take the wrog path, as may do. Why though, would you wat to do that? Be better. Reach higher. We take resposibility of our lives by actively workig o improvemet. You also make a choice if you just drift alog as the currets take you. Do t fear improvemet. Do t fear goig agaist the grai of the majority or breakig the rules, eve if uwritte, of what ormal busy people do. Maybe you are ot really too busy. Maybe the path for you is the Scottish Rite. It was the path for me. 1st Lt. Commader By Phil Hurwitz, 32 MSA You Wat to be Part of It You have bee a member of the Valley, ad deep dow iside, you wat to participate, be part of the team. But how? Maybe take a part as a cast member i a Degree. Actig is a challege; if for othig else, tha it forces you outside your comfort zoe. Some thrive o that (thik adreali rush); others... ot so much. Every Fall ad Sprig, we coduct a Reuio i which we produce allegorical plays. These plays are how we seek further Light i Masory. Our plays are productios ivolvig costumig, props, lightig ad audio visual elemets. We are blessed i our Valley to have the able assistace of Brother James Robb (SW-Coucil) ad Brother Chuck Rettig (High Priest-Coucil) to brig these elemets together. Brothers, you have i the past aswered the call to assist i stagig our Reuios, ad for that I thak you. But it has bee a ad-hoc affair. I other words, askig Brothers to help out o the day of the Degree. This adds uecessary stress to your Brothers who are producig these plays for you. This is your chace to participate by beig a part of the productio team. Your Valley eeds your help with wardrobe, props, ad sceery. As a Chapter, we eed to strive toward improvig our Degree work. This, of course, meas that our Compaios eed to become ivolved i some way i the work. There is much that ca be doe without havig to lear a part i the work. There is costumig, stagig, walk-o parts, setup ad teardow that eed to be filled for excellet Degree work. Our Compaios are ecouraged to atted our meetig ad discuss their possible participatio i the work of the Chapter. Royal Arch Degree We are plaig to cofer the Royal Arch Degree o our Cadidates at our first meetig o April 14th. We will be receivig help from Compaios of other Chapters for some of the large parts, but we could still use help from our Compaios as listed above. By the time you read this there will be a ew Grad High Priest ad a ew District Deputy Grad High Priest. Our DDGHP is R\E\ Fred Newto. Compaios are ecouraged to atted our Covocatios to fid out what the Grad High Priest is expectig from Chapters i the comig year. As of this writig, Grad Chapter has ot bee held, so we do t have firm word o the future. The Chapter will work to meet all expectatios of the Grad Chapter ad the Grad High Priest. This will most likely mea that the Officers will be expected to do their part from memory for Opeig ad Closig. This is ot hard ad ca be very impressive to the Compaios preset ad all ew Compaios of our Chapter. We would like our Chapter to become oe of the premier Chapters i the State. This will take some work by all Compaios. May Chapters build a core of Compaios who do the work ad serve as Officers with ewer Compaios expected to participate. We have a better idea that the majority of the Compaios work ito positios ad fid their ow place i the Chapter. We would like to see Compaios move i ad out of the Lie positios without, ecessarily, movig up to the positio of High Priest. This will allow Compaios to fid a comfortable positio i the Chapter ad work with other Compaios to see that the positio is always filled, but ot ecessarily by Compaios progressig through the lie. Musigs Why would a Brother Freemaso wat to joi the York Rite? Oe reaso is to build upo the lessos leared i the first three Degrees coferred i the Lodge. Aother is to complete the story started i the Lodge Degrees. The basis of Freemasory is the buildig of Kig Solomo s Temple i Jerusalem as writte about i the Bible. Freemasory adds a little bit to the Biblical story ad comes to a decet coclusio. It is suspected that the York Rite was origially developed to complete the story portrayed i the first three Degrees. I would eed to do some more research to verify this suppositio, but I believe I am close to correct. Me always like a story to be completed. This is why authors of fictio ca write a series of books that sell well as the series covers a story which takes several volumes to complete. Thus, with Freemasory, the story is told i the several Degrees ad is ot completed util the Royal Arch Degree. It is my belief that the best Masos i a Lodge are those who belog to Cocordat Bodies ad have leared the lessos of the Cocordat Body Degrees, e.g., the York Rite Degrees. The Brother Masos tell us what they lear from the Cocordat Body to help the ew ad experieced Brethre of their Lodges to appreciate ad uderstad better the lessos taught by the first three Degrees. A Compaio who speds time learig the lessos of the York Rite Degrees will be better able to covey true Masoic Light to his less-iformed Brothers. He will also kow how to improve himself to become a much better ma tha whe he started his Masoic Jourey. This is oe of the core Teets of the Fraterity, to make good me better. We hope to see our Compaios i future Covocatios. They will be heartily greeted ad their attedace at our meetig will be well appreciated. Stay tued for ext moth s musig. Part Three Developmet of the Order Recruits ad offers of moey ad lad came flowig i far ad wide. Soo, umerous presbyteries, castles, farms ad churches were built ad occupied by the Templar Kights ad their servats. The Templars fitted out ships, creatig both a merchat ad fightig avy. I time, they became the most famous warriors, travelers, bakers ad fiaciers of their day. I short, the Templars were a autoomous etity aswerable oly to the Pope, with o obligatio to pay dues to ay kig, ruler or diocese. Their wealth icreased day by day. I the Holy Lads, the Order s power was legedary ad cotiued util the fall of Acre (1291). They cotrolled the shippig routes from Europe to Palestie used by Pilgrims, but all these costituted just a fractio of the Templars overall activities. They had etered the scee as Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ, but o descriptio could have bee less accurate. Amogst their raks were to be foud the wealthiest people of Europe - leadig bakers from Lodo ad Paris, amog whose customers were Blache of Castile, Alphoso de Poitiers ad Robert of Artois. The fiace miisters of James I of Arago, ad Charles I Naples ad the chief advisor of Louis VII of Frace were all Templars. By the year 1147, 700 Kights ad 2,400 servats of the order were statioed i Jerusalem. Across the kow world, 3,468 castles had become the Templars property. They had established tradig posts ad routes o both lad ad sea, had wo war booty ad spoils from the wars they participated i. Amog Europe s states, they were a political power to be reckoed with, ofte called i to arbitrate betwee rulers durig times of coflict. It is estimated that i the 13th Cetury, the Templars umbered 160,000, of whom 20,000 were Kights i those times, costitutig a udoubted superpower. The Templars icredibly widespread ifluece throughout Christia Europe were simply everywhere. Havig amassed huge wealth, they were the most powerful bakers of their time ad also the largest fightig force i the West. The Templars commissioed ad fiaced cathedrals, mediated i iteratioal trasactios, ad eve supplied court chamberlais to the rulig houses of Europe. Structure of the Order Oe of the most iterestig aspects of the Templars was their emphasis o discretio. I the two hudred years betwee the Order s foudig ad its liquidatio, they ever compromised o secrecy. This, however, is iexplicable by ay stadard of reaso, logic or commo sese. If they were truly devoted to the Catholic Church, there was o eed for this secrecy: All of Europe was uder the sovereigty of the Papacy. If they were merely followig Christia teachigs, the they had othig to hide ad there was o eed for secrecy. Why adopt secrecy as a fudametal priciple if you are i compliace with Church doctrie ad your missio is to uphold ad defed Christiaity - uless you are egaged i activities icompatible with the Church? Disciple was so very strictly observed withi the Order s hierarchy that it ca oly be described as a chai of commad. Accordig to the Templar rule, obediece to the Grad ad s of the Order was paramout if aythig be commaded by the or by oe to whom he has give his power, it should be doe without demur as if it were a commad from God. The Templars were ot allowed ay persoal possessios; everythig remaied the property of their Order. They also had their ow uique dress code. Over their armor, they wore a log white matle emblazoed with a red cross, so that they were recogized as Templars wherever they wet. The red cross symbol was assiged to Tall Cedars of Lebao Cotiued from Page 2 i writig the Ritual. The text comes directly from the Book of Kigs, Chapter 5, Verses 1-10 ad the Secod Book of Chroicles, Chapter 2, Verses 8-9. It revolves aroud the buildig of the Temple i Jerusalem ad the help give by Hiram Kig of Tyre to Solomo. Hiram set voluteers ito the Forest of Lebao to gather ad shape wood for the scaffoldig ad roof of the Temple. There was a shortage of wood i Israel ad this shortage was impedig the costructio of the House of the Lord. These were ot commo woodcutters, but artisas. More ext time. There were three classes of Templars: Kights ad warriors of various raks, me of religio, ad fially servats. Other rules specific to the order prohibited marriage, correspodece with relatives or a private life. Meals were take together e masse. As portrayed o their sealwhich depicted two Kights o oe sigle horse-they were required to go about their busiess i pairs, share everythig, ad eat from the same bowl. They addressed each other as my Brother ad each Templar had the right to three horses ad oe servat. Breach or disrespect of ay of these rules was harshly puished. Groomig ad cleasig were cosidered a embarrassmet, so Templars rarely washed ad wet aroud filthy ad stikig of sweat, from the heat of wearig their armor. But accordig to history, the Templars were good seafarers. From the survivig Jews ad Arabs i the Holy Lad, they had acquired various maps ad leared the scieces of geometry ad mathematics, eablig them to avigate ot oly alog the shores of Europe ad alog the Africa Coast, but to explore lads ad seas lyig farther away. ca sed you brochures ad Petitios. How Do We Improve Ourselves i Freemasory By W\ Rob Schwartig Shortly after the formatio of the Grad Lodge of Eglad i 1717, we fid Be Frakli becomig a Maso i Philadelphia ad orgaizig a mutual beefit club, the Leather Apro Club (Juto), with its stated purpose to debate questios of morals, politics ad atural philosophy, ad to exchage kowledge of busiess affairs. Prior to becomig a Freemaso or establishig the Leather Apro Club, he had devised a system of moral developmet called The Thirtee Virtues. Jeremy Gross, i Philalethes Magazie, Summer 2010, Vol. 63, No. 3, proposes, as I would, that we look closely at Frakli ad his quest for self-developmet, scietific experimetatio, ivetio ad political exploratio. He was avidly i search of meas to make good me better iside the Lodge Room ad i the private clubs similar to the Masoic Lodge. Today, as we examie our Lodges ad our purpose for existig, what do we see? What do we preset to our Iitiates ad what do we do for them after they keel i our Lodge Rooms? Our beautiful Ritual admoishes them to perfect themselves, our Lectures poit a directio for moral improvemet ad the what more do we give them? I some Lodges, Short Talks or readigs from the Grad Lodge s Livigsto Library form our ewly made Brother s route to becomig a better ma. For most, there is very little. Mr. Gross ad I suggest we might do more. He directs that we look at Frakli s Thirtee Virtues for ispiratio. Perhaps we might wat to dust off his process ad share it with our Iitiates. The virtues are listed here: 1. Temperace - Eat ot to dulless; drik ot to elevatio. 2. Silece - Speak ot but what may beefit others or yourself; avoid triflig coversatio. 3. Order - Let all your thigs have their places; let each part of your busiess have its time. 4. Resolutio - Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve. 5. Frugality - Make o expese but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste othig. 6. Idustry - Lose o time; be always employed i somethig useful; cut off all uecessary actios. 7. Sicerity - Use o hurtful deceit; thik iocetly ad justly, ad, if you speak, speak accordigly. 8. Justice - Wrog oe by doig ijuries, or omittig the beefits that are your duty. 9. Moderatio - Avoid extremes; forbear resetig ijuries so much as you thik they deserve. 10. Clealiess - Tolerate o uclealiess i body, clothes, or habitatio. 11. Traquility - Be ot disturbed at trifles, or at accidets commo or uavoidable. 12. Chastity - Rarely use veery but for health or offsprig, ever to dulless, weakess, or the ijury of your ow or aother s peace or reputatio. 13. Humility - Imitate Jesus ad Socrates. I believe it is our resposibility to our Iitiates that we metor them i the practice proposed by Be Frakli. We could help them develop greater Emotioal Itelligece, the moder label for the processes of self-awareess ad self-regulatio that Frakli practiced. We eed ot use oly these behaviors; perhaps there are other vices that are more importat for each Brother. What Frakli would do is focus o oe behavior each week ad itesively examie his behavior o that oe dimesio of character every day for seve days. The, the ext week, he d move o to the ext. By the ed of the year, he would have goe through the cycle four times. If he was diliget i his iquiries, probes deeply ito the causes for his iappropriate behavior ad makes a coscious effort to chage, by the ed of the year, he would have become a ma of greater character. If we were to offer this assistace to our Brothers, would we be fulfillig a higher ad obler purpose?
