The Chapel is also busy each year with weddigs ad other religious evets. For Masos, you recogize the Chapel as the place where the Ivestiture Service is held o St. Joh s Day. Complete with its larger tha life staied glass widows, several of which are Tiffay widows, the Daiel D. Tompkis Chapel is somethig to behold. It s a source of pride for may i the Fraterity. I 2011, the Chapel celebrated its 100th Birthday. This buildig is meticulously cared for but its age has preseted the eed of some major repairs. 2 2 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com Deck the Halls... I ve bee (sort of) workig o the Holiday Party preparatios for the past two moths. Fa La La La La... with Eric Lubberts, my Lodge Brother who represets the Valley of Rochester, ad several Brothers from Ispiratio Lodge. Tis the Seaso to be jolly... with a 7-year old Gradso locally, I m lookig forward to the evet ad witessig the excitemet i his eyes. Our other Gradchildre live out of State, so we do t have the same pleasures with them. I m sure may of my Brothers ad Sisters are i the same boat. Of course, the youger members of the Craft have their ow childre with whom to share these joyous times. Treasure them! They will be goe before you kow it!! To all of you, I say Happy Holidays! I hope we will see you at the Party. May you also ejoy quality family time this moth, alog with a chace to regeerate your ethusiasm for aother year i the quarries ad i life. Musigs The ext issue of the Masoic Times will complete 12 years of service for me as Editor. Some days that does t seem a reality; others, well...! I ca say this, I ever expected to develop so much seiority i this area. I always tell people I could t have doe it without the dedicatio of the Staff over the years. While a few of the origial members are o loger with us, we have added some ew faces to keep us goig i the right directio. My thaks to them all! Ja Porter, Office Maager of the Masoic Service Bureau, doubles as the Compositor for the ewspaper. That s a old Graphic Arts term, which may people do t uderstad. Freely traslated, she takes submitted articles ad formats them ito this colum-style for the paper. Subheadlies are iserted to break up log sectios of text, ad other fuctios are performed to ehace the readability of the iformatio. She is the first coectio with most of our writers. Ja s paper proofs are the reviewed for grammar, puctuatio ad spellig by Barbara Goodrich, Garry Craker, Bill Flesher, Beverly VaHube ad Herb Specer. The I get the fial say, so if somethig gets through it is my fault! Our authors thik I make them look smart, but i reality it is the work of Ja ad our proofreaders who do the bulk of the work. The it s back to the computers for correctios ad fial assembly. No more repro prits; o more waxer; o more mechaical boards. Our fial output is a PDF documet ed to the priter. It souds so simple, but is really a time cosumig task As may have told us they do, we always hope you like our results. Oce agai, my thaks to them... ad to you, faithful reader. We eed to promote the importace of metorig a Cadidate through the Degrees ad beyod. The most critical time for a ewly Raised Maso is immediately followig the 3rd Degree because it is so importat to get the Brother to a Lodge meetig ad make certai he is iformed ad comfortable i the Lodge settig. The Metor eeds to take o this resposibility to assure the success of ewly Raised Brothers to esure the success of the Lodge ad District. Ivite the ew Brother to his ow Lodge, take him to aother Lodge ad make sure he sees as may Degrees as possible to allow him to grow i the Craft. We should ot work hard to get a Brother through the Degrees ad the abado him afterward. A District Dilemma A questio ad a dilemma for the District is the defiitio of suitable proficiecy for advacemet through the Degrees. The DDGM ad I would like each Lodge to cosider workig a little harder to make certai that a Brother has made suitable proficiecy i the precedig Degree before plaig the ext Degree. A Proud Maso Grad Steward R W Stepha Micheer smichee@ rochester.rr.com Deeper Still Seldom or ever do we employ our Lodge meetigs for that purpose for which they were iteded ad perhaps our eglect to do so is because we have ourselves imperfectly realized what those mysteries are ito which our Order was primarily formed to itroduce us. ~ W.L. Wilmshurst~ 1922 I recetly saw a post from a Masoic Facebook page with a picture of George Washigto, with a captio that said He did t joi to hear the miutes read. I d like to believe this is true. I ll bet Frakli, Voltaire, Mozart ad Goethe did t either. Ad, yet today, is there aythig more deeply meaigful goig o i Lodge tha commo ordiary busiess which ca be so easily summarized i the miutes? Or as Wilmshurst goes o to state i The Meaig of Masory that some Brothers cosider membership of the Craft to be a privilege which has brought them ito the presece of somethig greater tha they kow, ad that eshries a purpose ad that could ufold a message deeper tha they at preset realize (emphasis mie). Do we ever talk about this stuff i Lodge? Probably ot much. Is it because the mysteries to which our Craft ecourages us to explore are difficult to put ito words? That should t stop us from tryig. We do the Degrees ad beyod beig cocered about our abilities to precisely ad accurately recite the Ritual word-for-word, how much time do we sped explorig the MEANING of the Ritual? How ofte, if ever, do we talk about the Degrees i a Lodge meetig? How ofte, if ever do we talk about what this part or that part meas? We ope ad close Lodge with Ritual at each meetig. How ofte, if ever, do we talk about what that Ritual meas? There is much more substace to all of this tha at first we realized ad, to help oe aother, we should be talkig about it. Our Masoic Ritual is like the proverbial oio with layers of meaig ad flavor just waitig to be peeled back. We owe it to ourselves ad our Brothers to wade ito the depths of uderstadig - at least every oce i a while - as we explore the may possibilities of what our Ritual has to offer. Our Fraterity is a philosophical society ad a educatioal istitutio after all, though you may ot thik that by goig to may Lodge meetigs. Maybe, like the lost Cotiued o Page 6

6 6 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com Grad Steward Cotiued from Page 5 word, this is what has bee missig. Maybe this is why our umbers are decliig. We usually just stay i the borig ad safe shallow ed of the pool, but over there, with some courage, fortitude ad prudece, is the deep ed waitig to be explored with great excitemet. All it would take is for the to some ight idetify a portio of a Degree to discuss ad the to ope up the floor for discussio. No oe has the defiitive aswer. No oe, ot eve the, the seasoed 60-year member, or the Brother with the Purple Apro is the ultimate expert. But, every Brother who either cotributes or just listes, stads to gai ad take away somethig more tha which he came. R W Roy Moses rmoses14485@gmail.com Assistat Grad Lecturers Moroe District V W Joe A. Lewis joelewis4@gmail.com By V\W\ Joe A. Lewis, Jr. The Chamber of Reflectio The Chamber of Reflectio is oe of Freemasory s most allurig, provokig ad truly esoteric of symbols. From simple to more complex variatios o the theme, the Chamber of Reflectio forces each Cadidate to recogize that they are mortal ad, from this momet forward, a ew life awaits them, if they so chose it. This small room or Chamber, which may ot ecessarily be adjoied to the Lodge Room, is dark, with the walls paited black. It cotais a simple, rough woode table o which we fid: a huma skull - usually o two crossboes, a chuk of bread, a pitcher with water, a cup with salt, a cup with sulphur, a lighted cadle or later, a hourglass, paper, ik ad pe ad a woode stool or chair. Paited o the wall: a rooster, a sickle, the acroym V.IT.R.I.O.L.(U.M.) ad various sayigs. The Cadidate is dressed i his suit ad tie. He must ot meet ay of the other Brethre. The Treasurer ad oe of the Stewards, both dressed without ay Masoic isigia, meet the Cadidate. The Treasurer collects the ecessary fees ad returs to the Lodge Room. The Steward stays with the Cadidate, hoodwiks the Cadidate ad leads him ito the Chamber of Reflectio. The Steward the gives him a piece of paper that may cotai questios that the Cadidate must aswer. The Steward the, requests the Cadidate to write o the paper his moral ad philosophical doctrie ad he is also told that oce the door is closed he should remove the hoodwik. Whe he has fiished this task, he should rig a bell to sigal to the Steward that he is doe. The purpose of the Chamber is to remid oe s self of the caves where primitive me lived. It symbolizes regressio ad the materal womb. This gives the symbolic effect to the Cadidate that emergig from the Chamber is like beig bor as a ew ma. The Chamber also is symbolic of a sepulcher, which is the aciet ame of a tomb; thus, the Chamber idicates the begiig ad the ed of oe s life. This aspect also symbolizes the begiig of a ew or resurrectio for the Cadidate o his quest i Masory for light, truth ad ultimately wisdom. Hourglass The hourglass represets the passig ad markig of time, as well as the ability of the huma cosciousess, or soul, to experiece timelessess or geuie immortality despite the passig of earthly thigs. Oly whe time stops, or as the Old Testamet Magicia, Daiel, (Lit. Fear of God ) describes it makig the su stad still, ca we experiece our true ature, our past ad future, as our Creator iteded it to be. This is the meaig of the All-Seeig Eye. For if the eye was to close for a secod, as Easter lore tells us, Creatio would cease to be. I becomig illumied, filled with Light, we also become awake to the true ature of ourselves, creatio ad the Cosmos. Salt Salt is the symbol of all life ad purity. It represets the most fudametal matrix of physical life. It is also the symbol of the Elect, or those who by free will ad choice elect to serve deity ad to become craftsma i the buildig of the Divie Temple o Earth. Water Water is the source of life ad is coected to the symbol of salt i that salt comes from sea water, ad is ecessary for the retetio of water by livig orgaisms. It is the vehicle for psychic or emotioal life, as is see i our tears ad our blood. Kleaig by Kelly Commercial & Residetial Cleaig & Iterior Paitig Skull & Crossboes The Skull & Crossboes aturally refers to mortality ad is liked to the alchemical refereces also preset i the Chamber. The alchemists aimed at trasmutig base metals ito silver ad gold through the process of putrefactio. So must the Cadidate trasmute his ature, through a symbolical burial i the Chamber, ito a ew trasformed ma i the form of a iitiate. I alchemy this is called the great work. Ideed, ma s refiemet, trasmutatio ad trasformatio from a brute base metal ito gold requires great work! The skull i alchemy, amed caput mortuum, is the epitome of declie ad decay. The crossboes are usually tibias, the weight-bearig boes of the lower legs. Perseverace & Vigilace I some rites these two words are also placed o the wall. These two words itimate to the Cadidate that he must possess these qualities i order to succeed i his Masoic life. The symbols, allusios, allegories ad metaphors of the Rituals are ot plai. The Freemaso must scrutiize them persistetly i order to appreciate their richess ad deep sigificace, ad be vigilat that the lessos leared therefrom be ot forgotte. Sulphur Sulphur is the alchemical symbol for cosciousess, ad is see as the soul of the mieral world. Native, uprocessed sulphur is preferred. Cockerel Cockerel is the symbol for the comig daw after the darkess of igorace ad fear. It is also the ome foretellig spiritual trial ad testig. It was Peter who ackowledged the Light of Christ whe amog his peers, but deied him three times whe cofroted by eemies before the crowig of the cock. Just as we eed vigilace ad perseverace to seek truth ad the light of our Ier, we must also have the courage to ackowledge it whe our social stadig, ego, ad perceptio from others challege it. If we accept the ier light whe it is safe ad dey it whe it is dagerous the we are uworthy to sit at the table of the Ier ad eat his spiritual bread. Eve though we do t use this part of the Ritual i our Masoic Jurisdictio, you ca imagie what a impressio this iitial part of the Ritual makes o a Cadidate beig ushered ito our hoorable istitutio. The Chamber of Reflectio teaches, ideed, powerful lessos. True iitiatio is a idividual iteral process. Nobody ca trasform a ma but himself. Others may guide ad help, but ultimately, the idividual aloe is the oly oe who ca perform the great work. The Chamber of Reflectio truly epitomizes this process. It is my hope, that those of us, who have ot experieced this Ritual i our Masoic life, have at least derived some small beefit, although vicariously, from this allocutio today. Musigs The 1st Degree see i Royal Arch is the Mark Maso Degree. You heard i Craft Lodge that the Seior Warde is resposible for payig the Craft their wages. I this Degree, you ll see how that is accomplished. The Mark Degree is the Fourth Degree i Masory, of the America Rite. It is coferred i a Lodge of the Chapter of Royal Arch Masos. The traditios of the Degree make it of great historical importace, sice by them we are iformed that by its ifluece each Operative Maso at the buildig of the Temple was kow ad distiguished, ad the disorder ad cofusio which might otherwise have atteded so immese a udertakig was completely preveted. The Fourth Degree is particularly directed to the iculcatio of order, regularity, ad disciplie. It teaches us that we should be good ad true - ot ufiished ad imperfect. The 1st Sectio of the Mark Degree is said to take place a couple of years before the completio of the Temple of Kig Solomo. Good Work, True Work, Square Work. I the 1st Sectio, a youg Fellowcraft o the way to the Temple with his work, fids a curious, yet beautiful, stoe. This stoe was either oblog or square. It did, however, have a peculiar form ad beauty, which attracted his eye. He exchaged this stoe for his ow ad preseted it as his work ad attempted to receive the wages of a Fellowcraft. This stoe was rejected by the builders, but later became the chief stoe of the Temple. As a part of your obligatio you promised you would choose for yourself a persoal mark. Oce this mark has bee properly recorded, you will ever chage it. It is yours ad yours aloe. I the Mark Maso Degree the Cadidate is preseted with the Mark of a Brother i the request of a favor to make a deep ad lastig impressio upo their mid. They are further impressed ever to tur away a Brother Mark Maso whe the price of his Mark might procure for him the immediate ecessities of life. Charity has taught you as a Mark Maso. All four Royal Arch Degrees will be preseted at a Festival i Jauary. I ecourage all Brothers to seek more light ad preset a Petitio to become a Royal Arch Maso. Here s wishig each of you a happy ad safe Holiday Seaso ad we ll commuicate agai i the New Year. It was a great time of fellowship ad festivities. The Select s Degree will be held at a date to be aouced. Musigs A syopsis o the Select Degree: The Select Degree gives you a deeper uderstadig ad appreciatio of your Royal Arch Degree. As a Maso, you were iformed that you could ot be give the secret word of Maso because it had bee lost with the death of Hiram Abif. As a Royal Arch Maso, you ucovered the log-lost s word ad the Ark of the Coveat buried i a secret vault beeath the ruis of Kig Solomo s Temple. I the Select Degree, you lear why Kig Solomo chose that as the hidig place. You will lear the symbolism ad sigificace of each of the items chose for the deposit i the Ark of the Coveat, where you foud them i the Royal Arch Degree. Most importat of all, i the Select Degree you will lear why the secret word of Maso could oly be give i the presece of all three of our aciet Grad s, ad therefore why, as a ew Maso, you could ot receive it at that time. Like the Royal, the Select Degree gives you yet aother portio of the Solomoic Story. It takes place just prior to the evets of the Maso Degree. The settig is the udergroud Chamber or Crypt, which Kig Solomo ordered to be costructed beeath his persoal apartmets i the Temple. Kig Solomo ordered the work to be doe with utmost secrecy. To that ed, he persoally chose a small, select group of his most skilled ad trusted craftsme. It is for that reaso that Compaios of the Cryptic Rite are kow as Select s. As the Cadidate, you will portray Zabud, a trusted fried of Kig Solomo but ot of those whom he selected to work o the secret vault. My Compaios, i your Royal Arch Degree, it was a accidetal discovery i the ruis of the Temple, which led you to ucover the Ark of the Coveat ad the log-lost s Word. I the 1st Sectio of the Select Degree, as Zabud, you accidetally discover the secret vault at a time of its origial costructio. For reasos that are revealed to you i the ceremoies of the Degree, you fid yourself beig admitted to that select bad of craftsme. I the 2d Sectio of the Degree, you lear the aforemetioed reasos for the symbolic deposits i the Ark ad the reasos for preservig the secret word of Maso. I foud the followig article several years ago, ad I re-read it aually at this time of year to put the Seaso i perpective. True Meaig of Christmas As Voiced by Sata Claus Teach the Childre! Teach them the old meaig of Christmas. The meaig that ow-adays Christmas has forgotte. Teach the childre that the pure gree color of the stately fir tree remais gree all year roud, depictig the everlastig hope of makid, all the eedles poit heaveward, makig it a symbol of ma s thoughts turig toward heave. Teach the childre that the star was the heavely sig of promises log ago. God promised a Savior for the world, ad the star was the sig of fulfillmet of His promise. Teach the childre that the cadle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, ad whe we see this great light we are remided of He who displaces the darkess. Teach the childre that the wreath symbolizes the real ature of love. Real love ever ceases. Love is oe cotiuous roud of affectio. Teach the childre that I, Sata Claus, symbolize the geerosity ad goodwill we feel durig the moth of December. Teach the childre that the holly plat represets immortality. It represets the crow of thors wor by our Savior. The red holly berries represet the blood shed by Him. Teach the childre that God so loved the world that he gave his oly begotte So. Thaks be to God for his uspeakable gift. Teach the childre that the cady cae represets the shepherd s crook. The crook o the staff helps to brig back strayed sheep to the flock. The cady cae is the symbol that we are our Brother s Keeper as well as the sheep of Christ s flock. Teach the childre that it was the agels that heralded i the glorious ews of the Savior s birth. The agels sag Glory to God i the highest, o earth peace ad good will toward me. Teach the childre that as the lost sheep are foud by the soud of the bell, it should rig makid to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidace ad retur. Remember, teach the childre the true meaig of Christmas ad do ot put me i the ceter, for I am but a humble servat of the Oe that is, ad I bow dow to worship him, our LORD, our GOD. Thus saith Sata As a Templar, I fid a particular challege of faith today give the world situatio iflueced by the religious terrorists of the Middle East. I fid solace i the followig: Freemasory ad Faith I am grateful for a faith that makes the divie a part of my life ad at the same time helps me to recogize the good i every other perso s faith. There is o place i my religious faith for a arrow sectariaism that excludes those who do ot happe to see God as I see Him or for the kid of religious bigotry that blids me to the good ad precious i other people s faiths. I am grateful for a faith that eables me to embrace all me who believe i God. I am grateful for a faith that leads me to love all makid ad see through that love the meas of brigig together all the atios of the earth i a Brotherhood of ma uder the Fatherhood of God. I am grateful for a faith that humbles me i the presece of positio or power ad compels me to live my life i service to others, rather tha to sped the days of my years seekig to climb the ladder of fame, fortue, or success, ad perhaps thereby lose the faith that I had. Freemasory is ot for me a religio, but it is a istitutio that has served to deepe my faith ad elarge my cocer for the welfare of my fellow ma. Freemasory has served to make me a better ma, for it has led me to see that Freemasory ad our faith, liked together, are the twi pillars of stregth for the developmet of character ad the erichig of oe s spiritual life. Freemasory has reached beyod creeds ad cultures to make the eteral truths of all ages the property of all me who declare their faith i a Supreme Beig. Freemasory is a sacred thig, ot because it is religious i ature, but because it is able to see the religious i all me s creeds ad apply those values to the makig of better me ad a better world. We dare ot use our faith for what we get out of it, ad we get may woderful thigs from our faith, but we use our faith to brig us closer to God ad to oe aother. We dare ot use Freemasory for persoal gai, though we gai so much from Freemasory; but we dare to use Freemasory for the far more oble ad glorious purpose of makig Brotherhood a reality.
