2 2 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com A doze years later, we are still pluggig away at publishig the Masoic Times. Hoestly, I did t thik I would be ivolved that log! Of course, oe of us kow what will traspire over the years. We make plas, but they do t always ed up the way we evisioed or succeed at all. Oce I got my feet o the groud i this operatio, my itet was to visit all the Lodges ad Orgaizatios who subscribed to the paper i the five Masoic Districts we cover. My goal there was to attempt to ecourage greater participatio, especially from District Officers. While our policy is to publish articles ad advertisemets from our subscribers, a District Officer could talk about aythig happeig i the District, eve if it was sposored by a group who did ot subscribe. So may thigs happeed i that first year that chaged everythig I had evisioed ad it became apparet that the goal of visitatios probably was ot goig to be achieved. There are a lot of Shriers ad Sublime Prices who receive the Masoic Times because they are Members of Damascus Shriers, the Valley of Rochester, the Valley of Corig or of York Rite Bodies. Their respective Lodge may ot be a subscribig orgaizatio, but i some cases the paper is take to a Lodge meetig ad passed aroud for others to see. We have received requests for a idividual subscriptio as a result of this sharig. The ivoices for the 2014 Orgaizatio subscriptios are out. Alog with them, we sed the Secretaries a listig of the members to whom we are mailig the paper. While we try to keep up with pluses ad miuses, some chages get made which are ot relayed to us. We do this aually, but there are still some chages that seak by our operatio. It is a ogoig process to maitai the list. So, as I metioed a couple of issues ago, we are dow i circulatio sice I took over that doze years ago. We are lookig for the resposes from the Secretaries to see how thigs are shapig up for While I believe we are havig much more success recetly i Raisig ew Masos, the Great Architect has desigs o His trestleboard that cotiue to decrease our umbers. Assistat Grad Lecturer Waye District V\W\ Alle Joe Gree adoiram32@yahoo.com February is the moth Puxsutawey Phil makes his appearace. Accordig to leged, if Phil sees his shadow we ca expect at least six more weeks of hard Witer; if he does t see his shadow it is believed we will have a early Sprig. Groudhog s Day is a Americaized Europea traditio (festival) of origi. Phil s progosticatio, or rather those guys at Gobbler s Kob i top hats iterpretatio of Phil s predictio, comes from Europea settlers. North America atives ad settlers, log before Phil arrived here, had their ow versio of weather predictio usig ature, by watchig if bees build paper ests i trees, as opposed to i-the-groud, ad if wooly caterpillars have log black ad short orage bads i the Autum, just o festival. No doubt, because the guys i top hats have o problem reachig ito a hole to pull out a rodet amed Phil, while oe of the rest of us are crazy eough to put o top hats, reach i a hole ad pull out a buch of isects amed Stigyourass. As a Freemaso, February is mid-way betwee the Witer Solstice ad the Sprig Equiox. The articles I submit to this paper I try to icorporate aswers to frequetly asked questios from Brothers of the Lodges i the Waye District, as well as frequet errors, mistakes or misiterpreted parts of the Ritual I see. I try my best ot to violate my obligatio as a Maso i the aswers ad without soudig like I m preachig. I regards to revealig ay secret(s), which I realize at times it was a close call, it s ot a secret if it s published i books, foud o the iteret or writte out i log form ad published by Grad Lodge for the public. Most all my aswers are directed at Freemaso origis, which is Kig Solomo s Temple - a Temple built for two purposes. First, because the childre of Israel were cryig for a physical kig ad a physical temple like their surroudig eighborig coutries ad Kig David felt it was ot befittig the Ark of the Coveat to be housed i a tet. David was ot the first Kig chose; Saul was aoited first. However, both Saul ad David committed grievous offeses agaist the Lord, which precluded either of them from buildig the Temple. Both of these idividuals, as well as Solomo, are high-profile Biblical characters. Oe caot go to a weddig ad later be asked questios regardig the weddig ad ot say aythig about the bride or bridegroom. A sigificat umber of Brothers outside of Waye District have bee impressed with the aswers ad passig them aroud to Brothers i the Craft. The most frequet asked persoal questio is where I got such a vast kowledge of the material. Most comes from two Freemasos I met i the early 1980s who spet a cosiderable amout of time with me. They foud me whe I was goig through oe of the lowest times i my life I believe everyoe has those times. Now, after studyig New York Freemasory, I believe both of them to be Brothers of Lodges ot recogized by our Grad Lodge. I studied stories oe of them used to tell about Kig Solomo s Temple ad sacred scriptures that were ot foud i KJV Holy Bible, but coformed with it. The stories gave me hope ad ambitio. About three years later, I bega studyig Freemasory. I believe it was aroud 12 years after that I petitioed Pulteyville Lodge. I regards to the secod most frequetly asked questio, How do I memorize ad retai so may pieces of work? I do ot have a photographic memory, it is a gift give to me by the oe who created me to fulfill his purpose. I m just a medium. I closig, I submit a alterate iterpretatio of a lie i oe of the Psalms of David posed to me by a Rabbi which February 2014 I later foud the same iterpretatio used i a book writig about livig stoes. I the KJV of Holy Bible the lie reads, Thou art Lord, forever ad forever, eve uto eterity. The Rabbi said this lie is better traslated if the writer is sittig o a hill or side of a moutai ad is lookig at the horizos. The piece would be better read Thou art Lord, from vaishig poit uto vaishig poit, thou art my ad Lord. Mark Your Caledar O Moday, February 17th, I will be doig the Historical Lecture for the Etered Appretice Degree for the District at Pulteyville Lodge. The meetig will be ope for ay Maso icludig Etered Appretice or Fellowcraft to eter. I will be coferrig the actual Degree o Moday, February 3rd. That Degree is also a ope ivitatio for ay Etered Appretice or Fellowcraft. Both meetigs will have a dier precedig them at 6:45 p.m. with meetig to follow at 8:00 p.m. Diers are o charge for the ew Brother(s) ad their Coductors. O Moday, February 10th, s ad Wardes will be meetig, hosted by Sodus Lodge; Dier at 6:30 p.m. Program for eveig will be revitalizig the DeMolay for youg me. Dier reservatios should be made by with: R\W\ Richard Brewer at brewerjmc@verizo.et Moroe District District Deputy Grad - Phillip Hurwitz District Deputy Grad Moroe District R W Phillip Hurwitz phurwitz@frotieret.et The days of that rest i the West, are dwidlig. Before you kow it, the Seior Warde will (if elected) assume his positio i the East come May. With sow o the groud, ad belowfreezig temperatures, that day seems a way off. February becomes March, leadig to April, with May fast approachig. Creatig the Trestleboard usually occurs whe you are a Seior Warde, but ideally, plaig for your time i the East, bega as you moved from Chair to Chair, begiig with the Seior Deaco s spot. Your teure i the East should be more tha just ruig a Lodge; if ot, the all you will have to offer is a mothly borig meetig. Is your Trestleboard based upo a core theme or message? Alog those lies, a Brother posed a idea to me recetly. Why wait util Brother Briga-Fried Night to brig prospective ew members ito the Lodge? I agree! Therefore I decree, because I ca, that ay ma you kow who is iterested i becomig a Brother member of Seeca is ivited to ay dier, ay evet, bowlig get-together, ballgame, etc. That would allow us to meet the potetial member ad he meet us. The getlema would be expected to pay for his meals or evet costs as we all do. As soo as he submits his Applicatio for Membership, Seeca picks up the cost util he becomes a Maso. Why wait util October to get to kow these getleme? I believe it would be mutually beeficial to the Lodge ad to these future Masos. A Brother to Remember I do t ofte brig sad ews to this article but I was just iformed of the uexpected passig of oe of our Caadia Brothers, V\W\ Bria Stee. I will have a more detailed report i the ext issue. February 11th is our ext meetig ad is scheduled to be a Regular Commuicatio to trasact such busiess as may have bee pushed aside to accommodate our Degrees. O February 25th, we are scheduled to begi a ew Class of Cadidates. Petitios should have bee i by ow, but there still may be time to fill the Class, if it is t already. Days of Celebratio We like to recogize importat days ad there certaily is o more importat day for our Brothers tha the day they were bor. The umber of years may vary, but you have to start with oe! So here are the celebrats for February. Happy Birthday to: Kevi Gerhard (1st); Richard Giedd (3rd); Olido Nardoe ad Gary Lid (5th); Gerald Merzke, Robert Burs ad Jua Gozalez (6th); Doald Brow ad Keeth Goodrich (9th); Herbert Specer ad Eric Hiksto (10th); Roald Hibbard ad Michael Bailey (18th); Brya Aderso ad Scott Herzog (19th); Jack Palmer (20th); David Dahrsi (24th); Scott Rice (27th) ad Stephe Moore (28th). See you i Lodge. Uio Star Lodge No. 320 Website: 2d Modays, 7:30 p.m. W Keeth J. Tomaszewski ke@kjtgroup.com 3 North Mai Street Hoeoye Falls I what would be otherwise a relatively quiet time aroud Lodge, Uio Star was full of activity ad true Fellowship. For may of us, the adage that you get out of somethig that which you put ito it, ad cosiderig that we should have o expectatios of a withdrawal or takig, we certaily did obtai Harmoy ad Brotherhood as we closed 20. Our 1st Degree was completed with success ad much hard work by all participats. I especially thak Rodey Rittehouse for his presetatio of the Historical Lecture. He is a pillar of our orgaizatio ad exemplary Brother. The Degree work came o the heels of our Aual Holiday Party ad Dier. Brothers ad their Ladies ejoyed a fatastic meal ad the compay of ot oly other Uio Star members, but Brothers from across our District. Orgaized this year by our immediate Past, Frak Habitzreuter, it is our aual culmiatig evet that brigs us, ad those who support us, together for good tidigs ad cheer. Cogratulatios Speakig of Brother Habitzreuter may of those across the District have gotte to kow him. He certaily is ot shy! To the cotrary, Frak always exhibits those qualities that defie Brotherhood ad ever for a miute seeks the easy way out; rather, seeks to do the best for him ad others. It does ot go without recogitio. Uio Star is most appreciative of his efforts sice he affiliated ad especially i the past year. As such, Frak was omiated for ad preseted our 20 Masoof-the-Year Award, recogized at our Holiday Party ad at the subsequet Regular Commuicatio. Cogratulatios, ad well deserved, Frak! The Lodge s Harmoy Theme exteded to the fial evet for Uio Star i 20 our Holiday Fellowship Party. Those attedig this year, icludig our ewly iitiated Etered Appretice, ejoyed ot oly some holiday refreshmets, but a woderful potluck of tasty treats, with oe goig away dissatisfied for wat of cor or oil! I was especially ad truly glad to see Brother Gee Gordo i attedace. Havig ot see him i some time, as his Cabletow has seemigly bee rigged to a power wich across the past several years, it was a pleasure to observe he ad others wraglig over may games of Euchre, heartily laughig ad truly sharig Fellowship as meat to be. If it is ot these times, i part or i whole, that we seek to promote ad be part of, the what are we after? The bouds across time that uite us are ot easily broke as we share a core set of beliefs ad expected priciples. Time permittig, I geuiely hope we see more of Gee, ad all of those Brothers who caot always be with us, as more voices will ehace Harmoy i our Lodges ad lives. We completed the work of our Budgetig ad Auditig Committee early last moth. While seemigly oly a admiistrative task, I metio it here because, i goig through this process agai ad havig the chace to review the fie work of our ad Treasurer, it remids me of just how strog our foudatios are ad from where we ca build i the future. The level of detail ad orgaizatio uderlyig our Lodge are reflected by this cotiued ad diliget work. It is easy for me to say that 20 was a great ad ever-icreasigly harmoious year at Uio Star, i so may ways. February Birthdays Here I m sedig a most happy birthday wish to our February celebrats: Roy Cluff, Deis Coos, Rodey Rittehouse, Larry Millerd ad George Foeher. Musigs A Little Bit o Light from the CIC Part 2 (Cotiued from last moth) The Latis had seized Costatiople, set up Baldwi, Cout of Fladers, as emperor ad divided the Easter Empire amog themselves. The Teutoic Kights received cosiderable possessios ad a preceptory was fouded i Achaia. Some time afterward aother was established i Armeia, where also the Order had obtaied property ad territory i retur for service redered i the field. The valor of the Kights, however, ad the active part which they took i all the religious wars of the day cost them ad from time to time their umbers were greatly reduced; so much so that whe Herma de Salza was elected Grad (1210) he foud the Order so weak that he declared he would gladly sacrifice oe of his eyes if he could thereby be assured that he should always have te Kights to follow him to battle with the ifidels. The vigor of his admiistratio brought ew life to the Order, ad he was able to carry o its missio with such success that at his death there were o less tha two thousad Germa obles who had assumed the badge of the Order ad fought uder its baer. Large accessios of property also came at this time to the Kights i Hugary, Prussia, Livoia ad elsewhere. I 1214, Emperor Frederick I decreed that the Grad should always be cosidered a member of the Imperial Court, that wheever he visited it he should be lodged at the Emperor s expese, ad that two Kights should always have quarters assiged them i the Imperial household. I 1221, Emperor Frederick II, by a Imperial act, took the Teutoic Order uder his special protectio, icludig all its property ad servats; exempted them from all taxes ad dues; ad gave its members free use of all pastures, rivers ad forests i his domiios. Ad i 1227, Hery commaded that all proceedigs i his courts should be coducted without cost to the Order. The Kig of Hugary also, seeig the valor of the Kights, edeavored to secure his ow possessios by givig them charge of several of his frotier tows. The Teutoic Kights cotiued their humae services to the sick ad wouded, ad Schweder, of Utrecht, was moved by their actios to edow the Order with his property i the village of Lakar. I 1226, the Grad was selected by Emperor Frederick ad Pope Hoorius to be arbitrator i a dispute that had arise betwee them. So well pleased were they with his hoorable ad wise cousel that, i recogitio of his services, he ad his successors were created prices of the Empire, ad the Order was allowed to bear upo its arms the Imperial Eagle. The Emperor also bestowed a very precious rig upo the master, which was ever afterward used at the istitutio of the Grad of the Order. Agai, i 1230, the Grad was oe of the pricipal agets i brigig about recociliatio betwee the Emperor ad Pope Gregory IX, whose dissesios had led to may troubles ad calamities. The territory o the borders of Hugary, which had bee give to the Kights to defed from barbarous tribes i the area, soo produced boutiful harvests, ad the people lived quietly i peace. This led the Kig to reclaim this valuable district, with the disastrous results that ivasios from wild tribes resumed ad the coutry lapsed ito desolatio agai. The Kig releted ad retured the border coutry to the Kights, who speedily reasserted their rights, ad agai established a settled govermet ad geeral prosperity i the domiio. This grat ad some others that followed were cofirmed to the Order by the bull of Pope Hoorius III i A few years after this the Duke of Polad asked the aid of the Order agaist the paga ihabitats of the coutry that was later amed Prussia. These people were very savage ad barbarous, ad costatly committed horrible cruelties upo their more civilized eighbors, layig waste the coutry, destroyig crops, carryig off cattle, burig tows, villages, ad covets, ad murderig the ihabitats with circumstaces of extreme atrocity, ofte burig their captives alive as sacrifices to their gods. The Grad cosulted with his chapter ad with the Emperor o the proposed eterprise, ad fially resolved to eter upo it, the Emperor udertakig to secure to the Order ay territory that they might be able to coquer ad hold i AASR Valley of Rochester Officers Rochester Lodge of Perfectio Thrice Potet Michael Nohle, 32 Rochester Chapter of Kights of Rose Croix Most Wise Adam Juod, 32 Allegiace The Bodies of the Scottish Rite, sittig i the Valley of Rochester, State of New York, ackowledge ad yield allegiace to the Supreme Coucil, 33, Aciet Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasory for the Norther Masoic Jurisdictio of the Uited States of America, whose Grad East is i Lexigto, Massachusetts ad whose officers are: Ill Joh William McNaughto, 33 Sovereig Grad Commader Ill Robert F. 17 February 2014 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com 17 Prussia. Pope Gregory IX, i 1230, gave his sactio to the expeditio, ad coferred o those cocered i it all the privileges accorded to Crusaders. I the followig year a army ivaded Prussia ad erected a fortress at Thor, o the Vistula, o the site of a grove of eormous oaks, which the ihabitats looked upo as sacred to their god, Thor. This was followed, i 1232, by the foudatio of aother stroghold at Culm. A successful campaig followed, ad the castle of Mariewerder, lower dow the Vistula, was after some reverses ad delays successfully built ad fortified. The Grad the established a firm system of govermet over the coquered coutry, ad drew up laws ad regulatios for the admiistratio of justice, for the coiig of moey ad other ecessary elemets of civilizatio. The Kights did ot forget the spiritual eeds of their heathe subjects. Missio clergy labored amog them, ad by their istructio, ad still more by their holy, self-deyig lives, they succeeded i wiig may to forsake their idols ad become Christias. The Order received a importat accessio to its raks at this time (1237) by the icorporatio ito it of the aciet Order of Christ, i Livoia, which had cosiderable possessios. This was followed shortly afterward by a agreemet betwee the Order ad the Kig of Demark, by which the former udertook the defese of the kigdom agaist its paga eighbors. I 1234 the Order received ito its raks Corad, Ladgrave of Thurigia ad Hesse, a ma who had led a wicked ad violet life, but recated his past ad became a Teutoic Kight. Later, he was elected Grad. This Corad was brother to Louis of Thurigia, who was the husbad of St. Elizabeth of Hugary. After the death of Elizabeth, the hospi- tal at Marburg, where she had passed the latter years of her widowhood i the care of the sick, was made over to the Teutoic Kights, ad after her caoizatio a church was built to receive her remais. Were the moral lessos taught i our Degrees relevat for almost 200 years ad ow become somethig out of time, out of syc with our preset? Ca it be that these moral lessos are ot eteral but eed to be shaped to fit the cosesus of the times we live i? I thik ot. Popular culture ca have cosiderable appeal. It ca seem that our further light may be less relevat today tha 50 or 100 years ago. I suggest that the Great Light i Masory holds the aswers ow as it did ay umber of years ago. Fidelity, itegrity, duty, mercy ad all the other traits of good me ad wome are o less importat today tha ever. Learig these lessos as a idividual, ad society as a whole, is still of the utmost importace. It ca be discouragig whe popular culture seems to move i a directio that seems cotrary to our Scottish Rite beliefs. Keep the faith. Great cycles occur. The trees do ot grow to the sky. Now, particularly, it is importat for all of us to ot hide our Light uder a bushel. Be cofidet ad steadfast i our great Scottish Rite Masoic Fraterity. Uder- stad how it ca help me to improve themselves to be better, more able me. Do t limit yourselves to the ideas of popular culture. Recogize that other Brother Masos, ot presetly acquaited with the Scottish Rite, may well beefit by the Scottish Rite experiece. Let me suggest that you let a Brother kow how much you get out of the Scottish Rite. Help a Brother to get a petitio. We also say the movemet or o-movemet of other Officers of the Lie to ew positios. This should be a fu year i the Chapter with ew blood ad ideas. Cyree-Moroe Commadery No. 12 Chartered 1993 Commader SK Charles O. Hacock chacock@ rochester.rr.com Recorder SK Charles M. Roberts cholyoe@rochester.rr.com 3rd Moday 17 Church Street, Pittsford Fratres, Sir Kights February is a moth wherei we may solidify our goals ad objectives for the ew year. To do so, we must put ito perspective the values we wish to emphasize ad reiforce through our actios. It is with this thought i mid that I looked at the caledar for February ad cotemplated a topic for this article. Valetie s Day caught my attetio so I did some quick research o the subject ad these thoughts came together. Most places I looked to fid out about Valetie s Day described it as a celebratio of love ad lovers. The roots of Valetie s Day go back to aciet times whe people paid hoor to the Roma God of Fertility. This was kow as the Feast of Lupercalia ad was eve the celebrated o February 14th. The traditios of Valetie s Day are broad ad may. It is a time to exchage cards or small gifts. Chocolates ad jewelry are the biggest hits of this holiday alog with a romatic dier with your lady. It is a romatic evet for lovers. May a couple have become egaged or eve wed o this day. For others it is a day to realize that they have falle i love or are about to fall i love. I thik that we as Sir Kights should use this day, as well as the other days of the year, to cotiue to practice Chivalry i our O Jauary 25th, we hosted a Degree Festival held at Palmyra Masoic Hall for the coferral of all the Royal Arch Degrees o Cadidates from District Chapters ad other Chapters as were available to atted. We thak all Compaios who participated i the Degree work for their excellet coferral of the Degrees. We are lookig forward to our ew Compaios attedig our Regular Covocatios ad learig more about our Craft. There is much chage comig i the York Rite. What all the chages are will be detailed i March at the Grad Chapter Covocatio i Albay. The icomig Grad High Priest has some good educatioal ideas to build the meaig of the Rite ad why Brothers choose to become Compaios. I believe there will cotiue to be chages to a lot of the Rite that should excite our Compaios. Musigs I tried to write this for the last issue of the Masoic Times, but sice our Electio was delayed, I lives. We ca do this by cotiuig to practice the Kightly virtues. We should seek excellece i all our edeavors. We should seek the path of right urestraied by bias or selfish iterests. We should always be loyal. We should choose the more difficult path because it is ecessary ad be prepared to make persoal sacrifices for our beliefs. We should always defed our Ladies, family ad atio. We should always have Faith. We should be humble, ot boastig, of our accomplishmets. We should give as far as our resources will allow. We should seek stature of character by holdig to the virtues ad duties of a Kight. Ad, most importat, because it is right. Sir Kights, here are some additioal thoughts o the subject. Essetial elemets of today s code of chivalry All of a kight s virtues were symbolized by the equipmet he used, a d perhaps othig was more symbolic tha the kight s spurs. The spurs represeted courage, ad whe a youg ma was kighted, it was sometimes said he had wo his spurs. (The spur pictured beloged to a Germa kight of the 16th cetury.) Although we ofte refer to the code of chivalry, i truth, there was o such thig as a uiform code of kightly behavior ad attitude i the Middle Ages. (Ad if you ve read some versio of a true code of chivalry o the Net or i a book somewhere, rest assured it was writte sometime log after the Age of Chivalry was past.) May people from successful kights to cotemplative philosophers compiled lists will try agai. I have ejoyed my terms as High Priest of Hiram Chapter ad I hope the Compaios who atteded our Covocatios ejoyed themselves. We kow that some have a hard time attedig due to busiess ad family issues. We accept these as valid reasos ad hope our Compaios have a good family ad ejoyable employmet situatio. We would ask that, whe you have the time, to come to a Covocatio. If you feel you would be ucomfortable durig Opeig, etc., let oe of the Officers kow whe you arrive ad they (or I) will assist you i becomig comfortable. I kow it took me a while before I felt that I kew eough to be comfortable at opeig. As I metioed last moth, I will be cotiuig as District Deputy Grad High Priest for the th Capitular District. The job may be chagig as the year progresses, but I am lookig forward to the challege. I will, of course, support the Chapter i every way I ca ad it is our ewly elected High Priest s of virtuous qualities, called the kightly virtues, which they felt defied chivalry. No two were exactly the same. There were, however, several commo themes foud i these lists of kightly virtues. By combiig these, we have created what we cosider to be the seve kightly virtues of the moder code of chivalry: Courage More tha bravado or bluster, today s kight expectatio that his elected ad appoited Officers will support him through their attedace at Covocatios ad support for his programs ad evets. We will see you all at future evets. There is much to ejoy ad lear i the York Rite ad especially the Royal Arch. Keep o trucki. By E\ K. Rick Howe Just as short ote to say how excited I am at fially becomig High Priest of Hiram Chapter. I exted my heartfelt thaks ad appreciatio to Joh Zabel for the great work he has doe while I was sidelied i the pursuit of other iterests. As may kow, my teure as Commader-i- Chief of Rochester Cosistory is widig dow ad I will ow be able to (hopefully) apply some of what I have leared to cotiue rebuildig our Royal Arch Chapter. Compaio Zabel has made great strides i this area ad ow, as District Deputy, he will be able to take his kowledge to other Chapters i our Realm. If we all work together i this, I kow we ca make this District i shiig armor must have the courage of the heart ecessary to udertake tasks which are difficult, tedious or uglamorous, ad to graciously accept the sacrifices ivolved. Justice A kight i shiig armor holds himself to the highest stadard of behavior, ad kows that fudgig o the little rules weakes the fabric of society for everyoe. Mercy Words ad attitudes ca be paiful weapos i the moder world, which is why a kight i shiig armor exercises mercy i his dealigs with others, creatig a sese of peace ad commuity, rather tha egederig hostility ad atagoism. Geerosity Sharig what s valuable i life meas ot just givig away material goods, but also time, attetio, wisdom ad eergy the thigs that create a strog, rich ad diverse commuity. Faith I the code of chivalry, faith meas trust ad itegrity, ad a kight i shiig armor is always faithful to his promises, o matter how big or small they may be. Nobility Although this word is sometimes cofused with etitlemet or sobbishess, i the code of chivalry it coveys the importace of upholdig oe s covictios at all times, especially whe o oe else is watchig. Hope More tha just a safety et i times of tragedy, hope is preset every day i a moder kight s positive outlook ad cheerful demeaor the shiig armor that shields him ad ispires people all aroud. Each of these cocepts is importat i itself, ad every oe of these virtues is a admirable quality, but whe all of them bled together i oe perso, we discover the value, ad power, of chivalry today. Moder-day kights should strive to keep these virtues alive i their ow hearts, but, perhaps more importatly, they should work to brig these woderful qualities out i the people they see every day at home, i the office, at school or o the street corer. A perso who lives by the code of chivalry i today s world allows everyoe to see his best qualities reflected i his shiig armor. Historias thik of chivalry as the uwritte agreemet which the kights of the Middle Ages used to coduct themselves i touramets ad warfare. Literature experts view chivalry through the precepts of the medieval church ad its uique cult of the Madoa. Ad for those who kow of chivalry oly from old fatasy ad Hiram Chapter the strogest i the State of New York. We have programs to offer to the Blue Lodges ad I ecourage all to use us for that purpose. It is the resposibility of the Cocordat Bodies to aid our District Leaders i helpig to make Lodges a place where Brothers ca come to be educated o Freemasory. Royal Arch plays a great part i Masory. We were told i our 3rd Degree that the word was lost. Did you kow that you will fid that which was lost i the Degrees of the Holy Royal Arch? Ad i Cryptic Masory you will discover where it was hidde. I ecourage all s to use York Rite ad Scottish Rite to fill your Trestleboard with programs to elighte your members. I realize that much of what we write i these pages does ot reach our target audiece. It is therefore ecessary for all of us to work together ad iform our Brothers as to what is available to them ad ecourage them to exploit it. ovels ad Kig Arthur movies, chivalry implies a sese of courtesy which is exemplified by a getlema holdig the door for a lady, or spreadig his coat over a mud puddle so she ca walk across it. Iterestigly, all of these views are correct. The true spirit of the Code of Chivalry sprigs from three sources of the Middle Ages: the battlefield, the cathedral ad the court. The job of a kight was to defed the kigdom i times of war, ad a great deal of traiig (both physical ad metal) was required for this job. So, from the kight s duties o the battlefield comes the chivalric admiratio of courage, stregth ad loyalty. A kight was also expected to be pious, to respect the traditios of the medieval church, ad to use his stregth ad armor to protect the moks ad bishops from harm as they did the work of givig aid to the poor ad crippled. From the cathedral, the, sprigs the chivalric sese of charity ad geerosity, ad the role of a kight as the protector of the defeseless. Fially, the kight was also a servat at the Kig s court, ad was expected to coduct himself with the refiemet of a scholar or cleric whe performig his duties there. From these courtly iteractios comes chivalry s obler side: a sese of obligatio, humility ad respect for others. You do t eed to be a soldier, a priest or a politicia to appreciate the value of a combiatio of determiatio, itrospectio ad cooperatio. I my mid, this is exactly what Chivalry Today is all about 1) Recogizig the eed for duty ad service (to your loved oes, your family, your busiess Cotiued o Page 19
