Trasformatio is about chage, but is ot just ay chage such as decay. Decay is to rot or declie-i-value while trasformatio is to chage by ature ito somethig more sigificat. A valuable symbol for trasformatio is the rough ashlar becomig the perfect ashlar through effort ad educatio. Valley Commader-i-Chief, Joh Lemke, 32, DSA, welcomed everyoe to the evet ad discussed the importace of the theme ad the impact of chage o society. 3 May Website: N York Rite NEWS Hiram Chapter No. 62 2d & 4th Thursdays 7:30 p.m. R E Joh Zabel, High Priest H) zabelj@midsprig.com R E Charles M. Roberts, cholyoe@rochester.rr.com 17 Church Street, Pittsford 534 What s Happeig Our District Deputy Grad High Priest, R\E\ Rick Howe, ad the 13th Capitular District AGL, V\E\ Jamie Kaim, made their Official Visit to Hiram Chapter at our March 26th meetig. If you missed the meetig, you missed a very ice eveig. Our Chapter was certified by the AGL as beig able to ope from memory, with some promptig. This was the secod time we attempted to be certified ad is the first time we succeeded. Your High Priest would like to commed all the Officers, who were able to be preset, o their kowledge of the opeig Ritual. There are areas that eed improvemet ad we will be workig o those as the year progresses. Compaio Kaim oted that the Grad High Priest would like to have all Chapters certified every year o both Opeig ad Closig ad o oe or more Degree coferrals. Speakig of Degree coferrals, the Chapter coferred the Mark Maso ad Past Degrees o several Cadidates at our April 9th meetig. The Degree was coordiated by Compaio Lace Daul. The cast for both Degrees did a very good job ad we hope that the Cadidates for the Degrees received ew Light i Masory from witessig the Degrees. We will be plaig whe we will be coferrig the Most Excellet ad Holy Royal Arch Degrees. At this time we are lookig to the Fall for the coferral. You may have heard that the District Grad Lecturer s Covetio was goig to be i April. Well, that was caceled as the Grad Lecturer was iformed that he could ot atted for family reasos. We hope he had a great time with his family. The Covetio will be rescheduled, but probably ot util Fall. The Chapter will keep all iformed of the Covetio whe it is scheduled ad where it will take place. We suspect it will be held at Northfield Lodge, but that is ot certai. Our Jue meetig will be the Aual York Rite Picic. This year we will be returig to Kig s Bed Park i Pittsford. The food will be a barbeque as we have had the last couple of years. The picic attedees have ejoyed the barbeque ad there are o leftovers at the ed of the evet. Everyoe takes somethig home. There will be more iformatio about this as we approach Jue, so keep i touch. Degree Iterpretatio You may remember from the Mark Maso Degree that the time of day is metioed i several places, but i a way that is foreig to moder timekeepig. The Degree talks about the first hour of the day, the sixth hour of the sixth day of the week ad the eleveth hour. If you are usig moder time keepig the first of the day is 1:00 a.m., but i the Degree this is ot what is meat. I Aciet Times, the ability to cout hours depeded o the su ad su dials as there were o mechaical clocks. There was a early timekeepig system that divided daylight ito 12 hours, so the first hour would be aroud surise ad the twelfth hour would be at suset. This is a iterestig system of timekeepig as the hour had ot a set legth. I the Summer, a hour was loger tha i the Witer, uless you were i the tropics, due to the seasoal variatio i the amout of daylight. With this time coutig method, the sixth hour would be our Noo ad the eleveth hour would be a hour before suset. The Mark Maso Degree uses the time system from the Bible i the Book of Matthew, which is this twelve-hour daylight system. This is the oly York Rite Degree that metios specific hours of the day. The oly other Degree that metios specific hours is the 3rd Degree ad it uses desigatios of High-Twelve ad Low- Twelve, which meas there was some mechaical system of coutig time, i.e., a clock. I am sure that whe the two Degrees were developed, o oe really thought of the differeces i the method of coutig time. If you have paid attetio to the Degree, you may have oticed the differece, but few people would kow how to recocile the differece as today we uiversally use oe method of coutig time. Next moth I might talk about a clock that uses several time-coutig methods, icludig 12 hours of daylight. You have begu a jourey which will, hopefully, be oe of the most importat evets of your life. Hopefully, your Lodge has provided you with a approachable ad kowledgeable Metor who has helped you alog the way ad who will cotiue to metor you for at least your first full year i the Craft. While you are ow a full-fledged Maso with all the rights ad privileges, there is still much more to lear. There is a lifetime of learig ahead if you wat to pursue it. Remember, like aythig, the more you put ito your practice of Freemasory, the more you will get out of it! At this poit you may be thikig of your Lodge as just a social club, where you have diers, go ito the meetig ad do a little busiess ad the maybe have a couple of driks ad go home. Let me assure you, there is a whole lot more to all of this, tha a social club. Freemasory is subtle i the ways that it imparts its wisdom. Those Degrees you just experieced ca be iterpreted o may differet levels ad their layers of meaig will take some time to reveal themselves. Some people read Herma Melville s classic Moby Dick ad thik that it s just a adveture story about whale hutig. If that was all there was to it, literary scholars would t sped their etire lives studyig just that oe book. It s literature i the fullest sese of the word ad so is the Ritual of Freemasory. Seeig a Degree a couple of times just begis to scratch the surface. Oce the surface gets scratched, you may begi to have questios about Freemasory that you have t yet coceptualized, let aloe formulated. That s okay, ad that s what makes Freemasory fu. Grated, it s a peculiar kid of fu, but fu oetheless. Stick with it ad ejoy the jourey. Masoic Developmet Course To get you started as you dig a little deeper, we have the Masoic Developmet Course, which will help you formulate the questios you may ot yet realize you have. The class will be fu ad iformative! It will be casual ad discussio orieted. The class will take place o two Saturdays (May 9th ad May 16th) begiig at 9 a.m. at Northfield Masoic Lodge Hall i Pittsford. O the 9th we will be doe by 1 p.m. ad o the 16th we should coclude at about 11 a.m. It s a great opportuity to meet other Brothers who may have bee recetly Raised ad to gai some isights about the Degrees. Cost of the class is $20 to cover food, Certificate ad Pi. If you are iterested i comig please cotact me at: smichee@rochester.rr.com as soo as possible. Assistat Grad Lecturers Moroe District R W Roy Moses roymoses46@gmail.com V W Joe A. Lewis joelewis4@gmail.com By R\W\ Roy Moses Update for the year The Moroe District is i good shape. The Ritual is very good, but still ot GREAT. I feel that desire of the Lodges to do good work ad the eed to kow why we do the Ritual is very importat to them. This is half the battle with secod half to do the precisio of the work that is demaded of us. With practice this will come. A few Lodges are doig excellet work; some are doig OK ad gettig better; a couple of Lodges eed more desire to do the good work that ca be doe. The Schools of Ritual are complete. I have heard othig but good reviews o takig the School to the Lodges ad how much they liked us beig there. It was ejoyable to do the Schools i each Lodge because we were dealig with the players who do the work ad do t ormally get to a District-wide School. It was also good to put ewer Brothers to work i the Ritual. They really like gettig ivolved ad all said they got more of what the Degrees really are out of the School. The Edict Degrees, as of this writig, are almost complete. Four Lodges have yet to comply with the Edict. Two are scheduled ad we have yet to hear from two.
