R\W\ George A. Foeher, who is Chairma of the Have-a-Heart Campaig, which solicits fuds at area Malls for the Roald Mc- Doald Houses i Rochester, has iformed the Masoic Times that prelimiary tabulatios of the receipts from the evet reached the goal of $20,000. Complete details will appear i our April issue. It s a Small World, Thaks to Techology It was t so log ago that residets i skilled ursig ceters had to rely o letters ad postcards to keep i touch with loved oes. May times, they could go years without seeig family members face-to-face. But thaks to techology, ad the geerosity of our voluteers, that has chaged. Ester Burt, a eighbor of the Quees Household i the Health Pavilio of the Masoic Care Commuity, is able to talk to her so, Wally, who lives i Beijig, Chia, thaks to a commuicatio tool called Skype. Skype utilizes the iteret to allow participats to hear ad see the people with whom they are talkig. What s Iside? Aother similar iteret tool is called Facetime. Ester, with the assistace of voluteer Kelly Villeeuve, recetly coected with Wally Burt ad Ester s 10-year-old graddaughter, Ella, who live i Chia. It was 9:30 a.m. i Utica ad 9:30 p.m. i Beijig! Ester was excited to see them, as well as talk to them. It was hard to believe they were a world way. Ester was usig a ipad, oe of two that were doated by MCC voluteer Lou Barille. The ipad is small eough to be portable, but large eough to allow our seiors to see who they are talkig to. Thaks to Lou s cotiued geerosity, ad Voluteer Kelly s time, several of our residets have bee able to coect with family who are livig far from the Masoic Care Commuity. A special thak you to the Royal Arch Masos who recetly doated a Adroid Notebook that ca perform tasks similar to the ipad. The techology is amazig, allowig our residets to commuicate face-to-face with family ad frieds all over the world. Usig a computer to Skype or Facetime might remid some of us of those sciece fictio shows such as Star Trek or Buck Rogers, but today it s become commoplace. We see such a beefit to our Masoic Care Commuity seiors i beig able to make these coectios ad welcome the doatio of additioal ew ipads, or similar items to accommodate more residets. 4 4 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com Moroe District District Deputy Grad - Phillip Hurwitz District Deputy Grad Moroe District R W Phillip Hurwitz phurwitz@frotieret.et Moroe District Table Lodge March 31st So what is this gatherig they call a Table Lodge all about? It s ot metioed i our Stadard Work. Ill\ Brother Albert Mackey, i his Ecyclopedia of Freemasory, idicates that a Table Lodge was bor out of custom. A Little Backgroud First Whe a Lodge goes from labor to refreshmet, the Lodge remais i sessio, but is i recess. That is ot ulike whe we were i school. School was ot closed durig recess; we just were give a break from our studies. That s the case i Lodge; whe we go from labor to refreshmet, we take a break from our labors to refresh ourselves. While at refreshmet, we remai uder the watch of the Juior Warde, whose charge it is to see that we do ot pervert the meas of refreshmet to itemperace or excess. A Table Lodge was at oe time a simple repast, where Brothers would come together after Lodge (their labors) to ejoy some fellowship, alog with somethig to both eat ad drik. Some of our Lodges to this day cotiue that traditio. I ve always foud the repast a ice way to coclude my time at Lodge for that particular eveig. The Table Lodge that I am familiar with, is a baquet. Accordig to Brother Mackey, our Table Lodges are pattered o the form prescribed by Frech Masos. These baquets were held outside the Lodge Room ad o the 1st Degree. Everyoe i the room had to be a Freemaso, icludig servig Brethre. The baquet table itself was i the form of a horseshoe, with the Worshipful at the head, the Seior Warde at the Northeast, ad the Juior Warde at the Southwest. The space betwee the legs of the horseshoe was occupied by the servig Brethre. Brother Mackey believes that the form of the table was a fuctio of practicality, rather tha of symbolism; but shares oe theory. Sice the etire circle represets a year, or a complete revolutio of the earth aroud the su; the the semi-circular shape of the table represets half a revolutio, or six moths. I tur, this six-moth period refers to the seasos of Summer ad Witer, whe the most importat Table Lodges were held. A Table Lodge would ope with a ivocatio to the G.A.O.T.U. Durig the course of the baquet, there were seve obligatory toasts. They are: 1. To the health of the Sovereig or Chief Magistrate of the State (I the U.S.A., to our Presidet); 2. To our Grad 3. To the of the Lodge (offered by the Seior Warde) 4. That of the two Wardes 5. That of the visitig Brethre 6. That of the other Officers of the Lodge, icludig ay ew Iitiates or Affiliates 7. To all Masos wherever they may be The terms that Frech Masos used at their Table Lodges cotiue with us to this day. Some of these terms are: Napkis Flags Table Tracig Board Plates Tiles Spoos Trowels Kives Swords Forks Pickaxes Bottles Casks Glasses Caos Bread Rough Ashlar Red Wie Strog Red Powder White Wie Strog White Powder Beer Yellow Powder Coffee Black Powder To Drik Fire Ad this is very Frech. The Table Lodge is closed with the Frateral kiss, which is passed from the aroud the table. Give that we trace our roots to the Grad Lodge of Eglad, it seems appropriate that we, istead, joi hads ad sig that farewell peed by Worshipful Brother Robert Burs, Auld Lag Sye. I hope to see may of you at our District Table Lodge o March 31st at the Shrie Ceter. This is our opportuity to thak our Grad ad our Grad Lie for all they have doe for our District ad for Freemasory. Grad Directors of Ceremoies R W Michael Huesto mph0523@ frotieret.et R W Robert Buchaa Are you thikig Sprig? We all have had eough of the white stuff ad it s time for suy days. District Table Lodge Your District Leadership Team has bee busy fializig the plas for the Moroe District Table Lodge which will be held o March 31st. This evet is a great way to help us thak M\W\ James Sulliva, Grad of Masos i the State of New York, our appreciatio for his leadership ad for attedig the may fuctios ad evets i the Moroe District. As a Grad, M\W\ Sulliva has bee there for all of us. Please, we eed your help to support this evet so you ca persoally thak the Grad. Grad Lodge Sessios We also thak W\ Steve Micheer for a good job this year as the Presidet of s ad Wardes. We hope the s have made their reservatios for this year s Grad Lodge Sessio i New York City. If you eed help to complete your reservatios, please let us kow ad we will help you make the arragemets. R\W\ Rob Buchaa ad I thak the Lodges for the hospitality exteded to us whe visitig. We have ejoyed the Degrees ad spedig time with the ew Brothers as well as talkig with the seior members. Have-a-Heart Campaig Thak you to all the Lodges ad Brothers who helped make this year s Have-a-Heart Campaig successful. It really takes everyoe workig together to make it happe. For the strog leadership of R\W\George Foeher, ad his may hours of plaig, we owe him a big thak you. Wrappig Up the Masoic Year With oly two moths remaiig before the ew District Officers start their term we hope to visit the Lodges ad thak you for supportig us these past two years. If we ca be of help to you, please let us kow. We would love to help with ay Masoic Educatio questio that ay Brother may have. God Bless you ad Happy St. Patrick s Day. Moroe District s ad Wardes Associatio By Stepha Micheer, Presidet At our Jauary meetig, we had a fairly good turout. Ke Hecker, Juior Warde at Uio Star Lodge, prepared a great Chicke Dier with all the fixigs ad pie for dessert. It was outstadig hospitality. The meetig started with a dyamic roudtable discussio about various happeigs goig o at the Lodges that were represeted. It was a opportuity for those who atteded to hear that may of the challeges that we face at our idividual Lodges are similar to the challeges experieced by our Brothers who are priciple Officers at other Lodges. I other words, we re all i this together ad our commo experieces as s ad Wardes i our Lodges offer us a chace to lear from ad support oe aother. I particular, I was ecouraged to hear what others had to say regardig tryig to icrease attedace at meetigs. Also, at the last meetig, a iitial listig of Lodge Programs beig offered was shared. We still have ot received resposes back from more tha half of the Lodges i our District. I trust that, if your Lodge has ot respoded to the survey, you probably already kow this. I also hope you will help us out by returig the survey. We will be tryig oe more time to get a survey back from the Lodges we have t heard from. Ufortuately, without more Lodges participatig, our resource list looks kid of slim ad its beefit to the Seior Wardes who are plaig their Trestleboards for ext year, is questioable. This is disappoitig. Aother topic of discussio at the last meetig was begiig preparatios for goig to Grad Lodge the first weeked i May. A sample itierary was passed out, which icluded some activities we could participate i as a group o the Saturday ad Suday before Grad Lodge. This icluded some possible shows we could atted, some sightseeig optios, ad chaces to have some meals together. Of course, these were just prelimiary ideas ad, at our future meetigs, we will discuss this further. Our ext meetig was scheduled for February 25th. It was to cocetrate o plaig for the Grad Lodge Trip ad further discussio o the i-progress Resource Survey. Support was foud with s ad Wardes as well as the Moroe District Purple Club. If you ca thik of fudraisers to help get moey for this cause cotact us. Tomaszewski ke@kjtgroup.com R W Gary R. Saford 27 Freshfield Rise, Fairport ggsaford@aol.com 3 North Mai Street Hoeoye Falls Recetly, I preseted a program about the Priciples of Freemasory ad their relatio to the foudig of the Uited Pre-Need & Medicaid Plaig Fueral & Crematio Services Memorial Evet Plaig David P. Crawford, Licesed Maager 495 N. Wito Road Rochester, NY (Betwee Browcroft & Humboldt) States. Brotherly Love, Relief ad Truth were the priciples I focused o. I described how each had a fudametal role i shapig the Bill of Rights, as well as the overall philosophy of our Foudig Fathers. While sectaria discussio was ot part of the Lodge Room discussio that eveig, I preseted how, i our system of govermet, all of the Priciples of Freemasory were ecessary coditios for our Republic to thrive. Abset ay of these i its etirety, we might as well cosider our great experimet a failure. I wated to call particular attetio to the priciple of Relief, ad its implicatios for ay society. Relief is to act for, to the best of our abilities, those i distress without detrimet to ay who are depedet upo us ad to give support to outside charities. A society that provides relief to its costituets as a guidig priciple, o its ow accord ad without forced redistributio, has little eed for macroecoomic itervetio from govermet bodies to help those i eed. I attaiig this balace, the efficiet ad practical executio of due process ad idustry is least ecumbered ad lets all idividuals most effectively ad efficietly prosper. This is especially evidet whe Relief is coupled with Truth. Abset false pretese, abset a wato exploitatio through dishoest meas, society flourishes as a whole. Have-a-Heart Campaig The impetus for this moth s article, ad its focus o Relief, comes from the time of year ad the observace of so may Brothers ad their families, ad the commuity, comig together for the Have-a-Heart Campaig, to support the local Roald McDoald Houses ad their missio. As previously commuicated to Uio Star Lodge, the Roald McDoald Houses have bee, ad remai, a vitally importat part of this ad may commuities. Masos from Moroe ad surroudig Districts cotiue to be proud supporters of that missio. Through the Aual Have-a-Heart Campaig, we ot oly help provide eeded Relief for families, we work together, i Harmoy, for all of our bettermet. To see the outpourig of support remids me that Relief persists. I estimated that about 1 i 20 of those who doated told us that they had, or someoe they kew had, stayed i the local Roald McDoald Houses. Of course, credit for establishig a veue for providig this Relief goes to may Brothers. From our ow Lodge, may Brothers immediately voluteered for shifts. Others, like Brother Mark Hutto ad R\W\Gary Saford took additioal steps ad facilitated the opeig ad closig of shifts at various Malls. Ad where would ay of this be without R\W\ George Foeher s commitmet, passio ad dedicatio to Relief. Workig i Harmoy, the efforts of all of those who led a had ad time to the Roald McDoald Houses families truly helps us all. It is o more evidet tha at this time of year. We look forward to truly embracig Relief at the most basic level i years to come, as we fulfill our obligatio to ourselves ad others ad cotiually hoe that Temple ot made with hads. Oh well! It s just oe day closer to Sprig flowers ad gree grass. There seems to be a lack of protocol at some of our meetigs. I wat to set the record straight. Partially, I thik it s because of watchig others that thik they have it ad ufortuately it carries o. Specifically, what we call the SA- LUTE. The Military Salute is used whe recitig the Pledge of Allegiace ad durig the sigig of the Natioal Athem of the USA, Caada ad Mexico. The Fez is NEVER removed whe the Military Salute is used. I have see too may times where our leaders take off the fez both at Shrie meetigs ad at Club meetigs. A Noble who is wearig a fez will execute a Military Salute whe the colors are withi six paces from him ad he will ot remove his fez. After the Colors have passed, he should discotiue the Salute. I hope this clears up this practice. A Imperial Officer, as well as a past Imperial Officer, is always addressed as Imperial Sir ever as Illustrious Sir. It s embarrassig to the Nobility whe improper protocols are used, so, hopefully, this istructio will be remembered by all. Staff Recogized for Service Durig Child Life Moth March is Natioal Child Life Moth ad Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Erie Ambulatory Surgery Ceter ad Outpatiet Specialty Care Ceter salutes Kristi Maguire ad Michelle DeRooy, our Child Life Specialists, for what they do for Erie patiets ad families. The Child Life Workers are the oly health care providers i a child healthcare settig who are able to say they ever cause discomfort to a patiet. Kristi ad Michelle support the patiets through may procedures ad use distractio to make it less stressful for the childre. While it may look like play activity, these tactics are importat for the patiet s comfort ad well-beig. The Child Life Specialists also serve as advocates for the child ad offer somethig very special ad uique i their care. I additio, Kristi ad Michelle teach the patiets ad families about procedures ad surgical experieces i terms the patiet ca uderstad. The psychosocial eeds that childre have whe they go through a fearful, stressful evet are addressed, ad itervetios are delivered so childre ca cope ad leave the Erie facility with a positive, healthy midset. This is a service that helps Shriers - Erie provide the best quality care to our patiets, ad helps make Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Erie Ceter a very special place. Erie Movemet Lab Part of Study Assessig Pitch Cout s Bearig o Athletic Ijury I baseball ligo, pitch cout is the umber of pitches throw by a pitcher durig a game. The correlatio betwee pitch cout ad throwig arm ijuries has bee a hot-butto issue i baseball for years ad ow is the focus of a ew study by Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Erie, Mercyhurst Uiversity Departmet of Sports Medicie, UPMC Hamot. Ofte a startig pitcher will be removed from the game after 100 pitches, which is regarded as the maximum optimal pitch cout for a startig pitcher. But is 100 a arbitrary bechmark? Studies have tried to address the questio, but most have looked at the way pitchers throw ad how the motio chages with repetitio as predictive of fatigue. This ew research project looks at motio, but it will also measure shoulder muscle stregth ad, for the first time, biomarkers. Biomarkers (short for biological markers) are used widely i medicie to predict serious illesses like diabetes ad cardiovascular disease. Could they predict joit stress i a pitchig arm? Twelve studet-athletes from the Mercyhurst Uiversity baseball team are servig as test subjects. Usig high-speed cameras to track idividual s movemets as they throw, motio studies will be coducted by Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Erie uder the guidace of project parter Kevi Cooey, PT, Maager of Rehabilitatio Services ad movemet aalysis at Shriers Hospitals for Childre - Erie. He will be assisted by Jake Gdovi, a Graduate Studet i Exercise Sciece at Mercyhurst ad a Graduate Assistat at the Shriers Movemet Aalysis Lab. Samples of studet-athletes blood draw before ad after pitchig sessios will be tested by UPMC Hamot to possibly diagose joit stress i their bodies. Usig euromuscular testig techology, players will also be evaluated for shoulder stregth before ad after throwig. This research project is a commuity partership that pools resources from major health care facilities like Shriers Hospitals for Childre ad the Uiversity of Pittsburgh Medical Ceter (UPMC) ad academic istitutios like Mercyhurst Uiversity. This study may ot chage the face of Major League Baseball i the ear future, but if it ca demostrate a likage betwee the elemets of motio, stregth ad biomarkers i predictig fatigue, it might lay the groudwork for further studies ad, ultimately, a more authetic measure for determiig pitch cout that could be implemeted at levels from Little League to Major League. I the cotests betwee the Veetias ad the Geoese, the Teutoic Kights aided the former, ad i 1291, after the loss of Acre, the Grad took up his residece i Veice. About this time the Pope origiated a scheme for the uio of the three Orders of the Hospitalers, the Templars, ad the Teutoic Kights, ito oe great Order, purposig at the same time to egage the Emperor ad the kigs of Christedom to lay aside all their quarrels, ad combie their forces for the recovery oce ad for all of the Holy Lad. Difficulties without umber, which proved isuperable, preveted the realizatio of this scheme. Amog these was the objectio raised by the Teutoic Kights, that while the Hospitalers ad Templars had but oe object i view - the recovery of Palestie, their Order had to maitai its coquests i the North of Europe, ad to prosecute the spread of the true faith amog the still heathe atios. I 09, whe all hope of the recovery of the Christia domiio i the East had bee abadoed, ad o further crusades seemed probable, it was determied to remove the seat of the Grad from Veice to Marieberg. At a chapter of the Order held there, further regulatios were agreed upo for the govermet of the coquered coutries, some of which are very curious, but give a iterestig picture of the state of the people ad of society at that period. Thus it was commaded that o Jew, ecromacer, or sorcerer should be allowed to settle i the coutry. s who had slaves, ad geerally Prussias, prisoers of war, were obliged to sed them to the parish church to be istructed by the clergy i the Christia religio. Germa aloe was to be spoke, ad the aciet laguage of the coutry was forbidde, to prevet the people hatchig cospiracies, ad to do away with the old idolatry ad heathe superstitios. Prussias were ot allowed to ope shops or tavers, or to act as surgeos or accoucheurs. 17 March 2014 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com 17 The wages of servats were strictly settled, ad o icrease or dimiutio was permitted. Three marks ad a half a year were the wages of a carpeter or smith; two ad a half marks of a coachma; a mark ad a half of a laborer; two marks of a domestic servat; ad half a mark of a urse. s had the right to follow their ruaway servats, ad to pierce their ears; but if they dismissed a servat before the ed of his term of service, they must pay him a year s wages. Servats were ot allowed to marry durig time of harvest ad vitage, uder pealty of losig a year s wages ad payig a fie of three marks. No bargais were to be made o Sudays ad festivals, ad o shops were to be ope o those days till after morig service. Sumptuary laws of the most striget ature were passed, some of which appear very sigular. At a marriage or other domestic festival, officers of justice might offer their guests six measures of beer, tradesme must ot give more tha four, peasats oly two. Playig for moey, with dice or cards, was forbidde. Bishops were to visit their dioceses every three years, ad to aid missios to the heathe. Those who gave drik to others must drik of the same beverage themselves, to avoid the dager of poisoig, as commoly practised by the heathe Prussias. A ew coiage was also issued. The ext half-cetury was a period of geeral prosperity ad advace for the Order. It was egaged almost icessatly i war, either for the retetio of its coquests or for the acquisitio of ew territory. There were also iteral difficulties ad dissesios, ad cotests with the bishops. I 08, the Archbishop of Riga appealed to Pope Clemet V, makig serious charges agaist the Order, ad edeavorig to prevail upo him to suppress it i the same way as the Templars had lately bee dealt with. However, Gerard, Cout of Holstei, came forward as the defeder of the Kights. A formal iquiry was opeed before the Pope at Avigo i 23. The pricipal charges brought forward by the Archbishop were that the Order had ot fulfilled the coditios of its sovereigty i defedig the Church agaist its heathe eemies; that it did ot regard excommuicatios; that it had offered isolece to the Archbishop, ad seized some of the property of his see, ad other similar accusatios. The Grad explaied some By Joh Lemke, 32 DSA 2d Lt. Commader The future is the time to do ew thigs. Right ow is ot good. There is so much to do ow that treadig water seems appropriate, maybe eve positive. I m sure most me desire to chage i a positive way. May me wat to grow persoally, but fid reasos, good reasos they thik, to stay put. Decisios ca be postpoed. It seems there will always be tomorrow. Everyoe is busy. You re Ivited I Masory, a path for growth is the Scottish Rite. Let me ivite all Brothers readig this to atted the Ope Meetig the Scottish Rite will hold o Thursday, March 20th. If you are a Scottish Rite Brother, please brig a Brother whom you thik might like to fid out about the Scottish Rite. We will preset The Peacemakers. This is the ew Licol Degree, a Degree ayoe ca see, which takes place right before the ed of the Civil War. It has bee well received. I will also preset a overview o a theory o how we fit ito the great cycles of history ad how each geeratio seems to have a particular place. It seems, for example, that the Boomer Geeratio of these matters, deied others, ad produced a autograph letter of the Archbishop s, i which he secretly edeavored to stir up the Grad Duke of Lithuaia to make a treacherous attack upo some of the fortresses of the Kights. The ed of the matter was that the case was dismissed, ad there is little doubt that there were serious faults o both sides. The times were ideed full of violece, cruelty ad crime. The aals aboud with terrible ad shameful records, bloody ad desolatig wars, ad idividual cases of oppressio, ijustice, ad cruelty. Now a Grad is assassiated i his chapel durig vespers; ow a judge is proved to have received bribes, ad to have iduced a suitor to sacrifice the hoor of his wife as the price of a favorable decisio. Wealth ad power led to luxury ad sesuality, the weaker were oppressed, oble ad bishop alike showig themselves proud ad tyraical. There are ofte two cotradictory accouts of the same trasactio, ad it is impossible to decide where the fault really was, whe there seems so little to choose betwee the coduct of either side. The coclusio seems forced upo us that huma ature was i those days much the same as it is ow, ad that riches ad irresposible authority scarcely ever fail to lead to pride ad to selfish ad oppressive treatmet of iferiors. Whe we gaze upo the magificet cathedrals that were risig all over Europe at the biddig of the great of those times, we are filled with admiratio, ad disposed to imagie that piety ad a high stadard of religious life must have prevailed; but a closer acquaitace with historical facts dissipates the illusio, ad we fid that the, as ow, good ad evil were migled. The history of the Order for the ext cetury presets little of iterest. I 88 two of the Kights repaired to Eglad by order of the Grad, to make commercial arragemets with that coutry, which had bee redered ecessary by the chages itroduced ito the trade of Europe by the creatio of the Haseatic League. A secod commercial treaty betwee the Kig of Eglad ad the order was made i I ll cotiue this i my ext article; there is much writte o this subject. Source of this iformatio was: org, Teutoic Kights: Their Orgaizatio Ad History by F.C. Woodhouse. is quite differet from Geeratio X, ad the you have the Milleias. There are four geeratioal archetypes. Licol, for example, was of the same type of geeratio as the Boomers. Hece my portrayig Licol may fit for reasos eve beyod appearace. The way each geeratio looks at thigs affects greatly the great cycles of America. Some thik we are ow i a crisis aalogous to the Civil War ad the Revolutioary War, but have t yet reached the climax of the crisis. The geeratio just older tha the Boomers is the Silet Geeratio ad the geeratio older yet is the GI Geeratio. Believe it or ot the GI geeratio ad Geeratio X should be aalogous types. Atted ad see how these great cycles may affect your life ad Masory. Of course, the theory may be rubbish but makes sese to may. Me joied Masory like mad i the Civil War. Roberts, cholyoe@rochester.rr.com 17 Church Street, Pittsford By E\ Joh Zabel Special thaks to all who participated i the Royal Arch Festival i Palmyra o Jauary 25th. These thaks iclude Joh Zabel who, as District Deputy Grad High Priest, coordiated the evet. I welcome Compaio Charles Price, Jr., ad Compaio Lace J. Daul to Hiram Chapter. I will be attedig Grad Chapter i Albay o March 6th thru 8th where I will be aoited as High Priest. I will the, officially, be High Priest of Hiram Chapter No. 62. I reflectig o this evet, I thought I might briefly discuss the first Grad High Priest of the Grad Chapter of Royal Arch Masos for the State of New York. DeWitt Clito ( ) was acclaimed as oe of the greatest Statesme that New York State has ever produced. We all kow, from our New York State History, that DeWitt Clito was a tireless servat of the State. He was a graduate of Columbia Uiversity where he studied Law. He was to his ucle, George Clito. He served as Mayor of New York City, State Seator, Uited States Seator ad Goveror of New York. He was a early propoet of public educatio ad a drivig force for abolishig slavery i New York State. He spearheaded the costructio of the Erie Caal, which became the gateway to the America West ad, coicidetally, was istrumetal i makig Rochester America s first Boom Tow. What may may ot kow is that DeWitt Clito was oe of the most promiet Freemasos of his day. He was of Hollad Lodge No. 16 i 1793; the first Grad High Priest of Royal Arch Masos i the State of New York i 1798; the first Grad High Priest of the Uited States Geeral Grad Chapter i He was Grad Commader of the Grad Commadery Kights Templar of the State of New York i 1814, ad Grad of the Grad Ecampmet Kights Templar of the Uited States i If this was t eough, he served as Grad of Masos for the State of New York from 1806 to I m excited about servig the Chapter ad, hopefully, will see great umbers comig to our meetigs o the 2d ad 4th Thursdays of the moth. I expect to be spedig a lot of time o Ritual this year. We will be workig o the four Degrees ad discussig their meaig ad how they relate to Symbolic Masory. O April 9th, We will be visitig Waye Lodge to perform the Peculiar Stoe. I look forward to meetig with our Brothers from the Waye District. I ecourage all s to cosider usig the Cocordat Bodies - both York Rite ad Scottish Rite - for programs i your respective Lodges. We are here to serve. Cyree-Moroe Commadery No. 12 Chartered 1993 Commader SK Charles O. Hacock chacock@ rochester.rr.com Recorder SK Charles M. Roberts cholyoe@rochester.rr.com 3rd Moday 17 Church Street, Pittsford I recetly ecoutered a Brother whom I had ot see i a very log time. As we talked ad recapped our persoal status, it became obvious he had a lot of egative experiece i his life. He was divorced, estraged from his family, lost his busiess ad NPD d from his Blue Lodge ad expelled from his church. His life is a wreck ad he has o clue as to what to do. Someoe had told him he had little credibility because he cosistetly failed to meet ay of his commitmets i life. I asked him to clarify. He the lauched a tirade wherei he stated that most people did ot appreciate that oaths, promises ad obligatios were oly words adopted by society as a formality ad ot really bidig or worthy of serious commitmet. As a example, he cited the pealties of the obligatios take i the Masoic Degrees. He said he could ot take them seriously because they were ot practical today. Similarly the vows ad promises of the church ad society are basically eyewash ad without substace. I reviewed with him each of his self-proclaimed problem areas. I each circumstace, whether itimate or ot, he expressed his disdai for the superficial expectatios of people ad society. He firmly believes he is right ad the world is wrog. Sice he chose to use a Frateral referece for the start of his explaatio, I decided to use the Craft as the basis of my rebuttal. I asked him if he kew the resposibilities of a member of the Craft. Other tha paymet of Dues, he could ot state ay membership resposibilities that he uderstood or had agreed to accept ad fulfill. I suspect he is ot aloe. Today, there are may who do ot thik i those terms. They look ad accept oly the beefits that they uderstad ad wat of membership. Followig our discussio I have reflected upo this experiece ad woder if perhaps part of our declie i membership umbers may be attributed to a geeral perceptio o the part of some of our members that parallels that of the old former Brother above. Could it be that the basic Teets of our getle Craft are ot uderstood or practiced by our members. Without goig ito detail cocerig the resposibilities assumed i the Degree obligatios, I d like to commet o some of the thigs that are assumed but ot ecessarily stated as coditios of membership. Be vocal about the kids of thigs you expect from your Lodge, Chapter or Commadery. Participate i as may programs ad evets as possible. Atted meetigs if they are borig, let the Presidig Officer kow ad suggest positive chages. If there are thigs you do ot uderstad, ask for a explaatio. Be uderstadig but firm that you expect better cosistecy. You are part of the Frateral family. Do t be eager to air dirty laudry. Do ot allow emotio to dictate your actios. Do t become part of the problem. Support ormal icreases i Aual Fees or Dues. It is a fact of life i all other busiesses. The Masoic Body is o differet. A Lodge i ad of itself is ot a philathropic orgaizatio. It must stretch its reveues ad resources to cover its operatioal costs, like all other etities. Uderstad there will be other experieces that you may truly ejoy at other clubs or facilities ad wish to icorporate ito your Lodge, but those activities or veues may ot work for your Lodge. Agai, be proactive, but uderstad your Club s philosophy ad/or limitatios. Abide by your ow expectatios, but kow that i order to provide for your eeds, the Officers eed the appropriate tools. Make membership repleishmet a way of life. No orgaizatio ca survive without some from of marketig ad sales. I the private Fraterity, it is the oly traditioal (ad i some cases) legal meas of matriculatio. Through your participatio, you are assistig the Lodge ad yourself i holdig costs to a reasoable level per membership. Be active i doatig your time to assistig the Officers i fuctios ad activities. Uderstad the ature of your ivolvemet as a voluteer ad try ot to become over-ivolved. Lear, also, whe to say No. Allow your Officers to maage the facilities ad operatios govered by the memberships goals. Support ope ad hoest commuicatios from the Trustees ad Officers regardig issues affectig the geeral membership. Okay, okay, so the article was t really about the privileges so much as the resposibilities. But I ll guaratee you this, if you just do some of these thigs, if you just try to uderstad some of the issues ad if you will simply participate i the membership repleishmet process, your Lodge, ideed your membership, will become a much more valuable asset to you ad to your family. Membership does have its privileges. We just eed to remember that to maitai those privileges, we as members, have resposibilities as well. A Fraterity ca oly be as strog or efficiet as the members who carry out daily operatios ad work together to solve problems. But a idividual member s list of duties ad resposibilities exteds far beyod the basic job descriptio. Some duties apply to all jobs, while others are specific to certai types of positios. May of a Officer s duties are listed at his Istallatio. Officers geerally reveal the full job descriptio durig a iterview or traiig process. As a Officer, you re resposible for uderstadig your job descriptio as well as kowig whom to ask for help or explaatio. This may mea becomig familiar with Costitutio ad By-Laws Policies or completig o-the-job traiig to lear first-had how your job fits ito the Fraterity as a whole. The Masoic Fraterity eforces a Code of Coduct that limits which topics you ca discuss while i Lodge, or how you iteract with colleagues. Every member has a resposibility to make others feel comfortable i the Lodge as well as a duty to be respectful ad accept istructios from Officers ad seior members. Plety of compoets withi the Craft are out of a ma s cotrol, makig it imperative that he maage the items that are i his cotrol. Puctuality is amog the cotrollable factors ad stayig a few miutes after the formal meetig is over is appreciated. Members should also dress appropriately for the meetig ad show up with a positive attitude for the work ahead. Showig respect to Officers, fellow members ad visitors ca set the toe for a positive Lodge experiece. Commitmet Your appearace exhibits commitmet to the Craft. Keep hair eat ad ails well maicured. I additio to excellig at the task at had, this behavior ca lead to advacemet ad promotio withi a body. I a day whe commitmet is a rare commodity, it should come as o surprise that Craft membership is such a low priority to so may members. Sadly, it is ot ucommo for members to move from Lodge to Lodge, ever committig themselves to the disciplie of the Lodge experiece ad ever committig themselves to the Lodge i geeral. Membership Matters Livig out a commitmet to a local Blue Lodge ivolves may resposibilities exemplifyig a Masoic lifestyle i the commuity, exercisig oe s spiritual gifts i diliget service, cotributig fiacially to the work of the charity, givig ad receivig admoishmet with meekess ad i love, ad faithfully participatig i Masoic affairs. Much is expected, but much is at stake. For oly whe every member is faithful to this kid of commitmet, is the Craft able to live up to the callig as a Fraterity that cares for its members. To put it simply, membership matters. Ispectio April 21st is the date of our Aual Ispectio. Our Ispectig Officer, SK Davis, Grad Warder, has bee very accommodatig i schedulig this evet. To be adequately prepared for this key meetig, I ask all Sir Kights to atted both the March ad April meetigs so we ca support our Officers i the demostratio of their Tactical skills. Commaders Receptio Sir Kights, set aside November 15th o your caledar. That is the date for the Grad Commader s Receptio this year. It will be held at the Holiday I Airport, Rochester.
