March 2016 Moroe District District Deputy Grad - R\W\ George Foeher the major mapower. This year, it seems there have bee may timeslots for which Moroe District Brothers agreed to staff, but did t show up for the work. Agai, I do t kow the reasos, but I m troubled that a Brother ca t fid three or four hours of time to doate to the best Masoic charity evet i the State. From the oset of this very visible charity support by the Masos, our Brothers have always exteded their Cabletows to accommodate this worthwhile effort. My sicere thaks for all who did their duty. I recet years, Brothers from the surroudig Districts have wated to joi us i support of this evet ad we are eager to have the extra help. Icrease Your Masoic Educatio ad Ejoymet This moth I wish to speak about a way every Brother ca greatly improve his level of Masoic kowledge ad educatio, with very little effort. This small thig you ca do will miraculously icrease your Masoic wisdom ad ejoymet of the Craft ad you may kick yourself because you have t doe it before. You will woder why o oe ever told you to do this (eve though I m sure they have). Or you will hag your head i shame that you ever took the advice of Brothers more wise tha you whe they told you to do this. You might eve start tellig other Brothers to do this ad begi revealig oe of the core secrets of our time hoored istitutio. This just could be the very thig you ve bee waitig for all this time, ad it might eve be the sigle best thig all of us ca do to re-eergize our practice of Masory. I ca t believe I eve have to write about this. Ca you imagie the shock ad surprise all those Brothers who are t i the kow will have whe they fid out about this? It s ubelievable. Ad it s so easy. Are you woderig whe I will get to the poit ad tell you about this thig? Is it botherig you that it s take me this log to get to the poit? Are you still readig? OK- Here goes. Go visit a Lodge other tha your ow. That s it. Pretty simple, right? The why do so few of us do it? Have you ever oticed that it s fairly rare for your Lodge to have a visitor from aother Lodge? Have you oticed that maybe you have t visited aother Lodge? We are i this woderful Fraterity where there are o stragers just frieds we have t met yet. Ad yet, most of us stay withi the comfort of our ow Lodge - ever botherig to veture out ad get to kow Brothers i other Lodges. A Proud Maso you are missig out o oe of the most woderful beefits of our aciet istitutio. Too may of us stay withi the cuddle group of the Brothers we have met i our ow Lodge. Well, that same experiece ca be had whe you visit aother Lodge that is ot your Home Lodge. The feelig that happes whe you are received by the Brothers at aother Lodge is affirmig of the goodess of Freemasory. You do t have to wait util you are travelig i aother Jurisdictio or State. This experiece is waitig for you at the Lodge i the ext tow over. Besides the positive feeligs a Brother gets from beig welcomed whe visitig aother Lodge, there are some other beefits: 1) You icrease the umber of Brothers you kow ad your Masoic etwork grows. 2) You get to see how some thigs may be doe a little differetly. 3) You get to see the stregths of aother Lodge ad how maybe they do some thigs better tha your Lodge. 4) You icrease your kowledge base of the Craft ad idetify available resources aroud the District that may come i very hady whe you are i a leadership positio at your Lodge. You should kow a week or two before a scheduled Degree if the Cadidate is goig to make it. It is better to reschedule a Degree the, istead of the last miute. May of us resist chage because of the ukow results, but without chage there is ever ay progress. Every Grad embraces chage for the bettermet of Masory. Our curret Grad ad Deputy Grad embrace chage. They have looked at some of the ways Masory has bee practiced ad have come up with the potetial chage of District cosolidatios to help the Craft survive with reduced erollmet. How may Lodges i the last te years have take a good look at their fiacial status, erollmet ad geeral welfare? I am willig to guess that we have all bee doig the same thig over ad over with the same result. If our Lodges i the Otario/ Seeca/Yates District do t become pro-active, our twelve Lodges may shrik to two or three i the ext few years. As a result, I have asked each Lodge i our District to prepare a Five-Year Pla ad preset it to the ew District Deputy o Jue 1, The Five-Year Pla format cosists of the followig: Visio Statemet: Oe paragraph aswerig what your Lodge should strive to become over the ext five years. Goals: Make a list of three log-term goals that traslate your Lodge s visio ito specific, measurable, attaiable, relevat ad timespecific objectives. Marketig Message to New Cadidates: What makes Masory differet from other orgaizatios? How will you attract ew members to your Lodge? What obstacles will you ecouter? Lodge Fiacial Status: Tabulate all Lodge icome from Dues, retals, diers, etc., each year mius the total cost of doig busiess. Iclude all expeses from Grad Lodge Dues, water, sewer, heat, buildig maiteace ad taxes. What is the Lodge s et profit or loss each year? List all Lodge accout balaces ad totals. If the Lodge has a et loss, divide the total Lodge accout balaces by the et loss. This figure will equal the umber of years util isolvecy. Our goal with the Five Year Pla is to stimulate thought about the future, both from a Masoic ad a fiacial stadpoit. Sad News Ad, some very, very sad ews, R\W\ James H. Roberts, cholyoe@rochester.rr.com 17 Church Street, Pittsford What s Happeig It is great to report that the Chapter is doig well this year. We had attempted to pla the Most Excellet (MEM) ad Royal Arch (RA) Degrees for late Jauary, but were uable to get the casts together i time. We are tetatively plaig the Royal Arch Degree for April. We eed to cofirm oe or more of the major parts prior to settig a date. We hope the Compaios who atteded the Most Excellet Degree were impressed with our work. The Chapter has sufficiet Compaios to do the Degree work ad we look forward to Compaios voluteerig for various parts of the Degrees. As you read this, the Grad Chapter will have met ad a ew Grad High Priest elected ad istalled. He is the M\E\ Raymod Roche. We wish him a great year as Grad High Priest ad are lookig forward to his programs for the year. We uderstad we will be doig more work uder his leadership, so stay tued for more iformatio o what we will be doig i the comig year. There are may thigs happeig i the Chapter ad we ecourage our Compaios to come to our Regular Covocatios to fid out what is happeig ad how they could, if they so desire, become ivolved i the growth ad stregtheig of the Chapter. We have ot yet set the date for the York Rite Picic, but it will ot be o the Chapter s Regular Meetig ight i Jue. We are lookig for a good weeked to hold the picic so more Compaios ad members of the other York Rite Bodies ca atted ad have a great time. Musigs The Most Excellet Degree has bee discussed i the colum o occasio, but I thought it would be appropriate to add a few poits about it ow. This is the oly Degree i Freemasory where somethig is completed. This Degree commemorates the completio of the Temple of Solomo i Jerusalem. With the completio of the Temple, the workme o loger eed their workig tools or dress as workme. This is all part of the Degree. The Degree also otes ad exemplifies that the Temple, although fully costructed, is ot complete util dedicated ad the proper furishig are i their proper place. What the furishigs are ad where they are placed is all part of the Degree. If you have forgotte, you eed to witess it agai. If you are ot a Royal Arch Maso, you eed to take the Degree to fid out. Now let s look at the Royal Arch Degree. There is a portio of the Degree where the Cadidate passes the Veils. This is a iterestig part as the passig of the Veils is ot part of the Eglish Costitutio Royal Arch Degree. The passig of the Veils is doe uder some Eglish Costitutio Chapters, but is ot part of the Royal Arch Degree. There is a move i Eglad to put the passig of the Veils back ito their Degree. We will see if this is completed. Why is the passig of the Veils importat to our Degree? Well, it shows that the Cadidate has take the prior Degrees ad kows the pass ad sig for the prior Degrees whe he is workig through to become a workma o the Secod Temple, that of Zerubbabel. As they start their work, they fid that which was lost ad brig it to light. The passig proves them worthy ad they the prove themselves further worthy by what they fid. If this is cofusig to the reader, the, if you are a Compaio, you eed to witess the Royal Arch Degree. If you are ot a Compaio, you should cosider becomig a Cadidate for the Degrees ad lear their meaigs. There is much that ca be leared i Freemasory takig the first three Degrees is just a start. Util ext moth, poder what we have give you to poder ad we hope our Compaios will take the time to witess our Degrees, ad, if ispired, take a part i the work. PART II - Foudig of the Kights Templar About 20 years after the coquest of Jerusalem ad the creatio of a Lati Empire, the Templars first appeared o the scee of history. Otherwise kow as Templars or Kight Templar, the Order s full ad proper ame was Poor-Fellow Soldiers of Christ ad the Temple of Solomo. The Order was fouded i 1118 by ie Kights: Hugues de Payes, Geoffrey de St. Omer, Rossal, Godamer, Geoffrey Bisol, Paye de Motdidier, Archambaud de St. Agat, Adre de Motbard ad the Hugh Cote de Champage. Thus was quietly bor oe of the most talked-about, effective ad powerful orgaizatios of Medieval Europe. These ie Kights preseted themselves to Baldwi II, the Emperor of Jerusalem, askig him to assig them the resposibility of protectig the lives ad property of the may Christia pilgrims ow flockig to Jerusalem from all over Europe. The Emperor kew Hugues de Payes, the first Grad of the Order, well eough to grat the ie their request. Accordigly, the district where Solomo s Temple oce stood (ad by the icluded the site of the al-aqsa Mosque, which survives to this day), was allocated to the Order of the Templars, thus givig the Order its ame. The Temple Mout thus remaied the Order s Headquarters for the ext 70 years util, followig the Battle of Hatti, the great Islamic commader Saladi recoquered Jerusalem for the Muslims. The Templars had established themselves there by choice, because the site of the Temple represeted the earthly power of Prophet Solomo; ad the remats of the Temple cotaied big secrets. Protectig the Holy Lad ad the Christia Pilgrims was the official reaso the ie fouders gave for joiig forces ad for creatig the Order i the first place. But the true reaso behid it all was altogether differet. I 1118, ie Kights Crusaders i the East, amog who were Geoffroi de Sait-Omer ad Hughes de Payes, cosecrated themselves to religio. The Order s missio of the Templars was to protect the Christias who came to visit the Holy Places but their secret missio was the rebuildig of the Temple of Solomo o the model prophesied by Ezekiel. There is o evidece that these foudig Templars ever gave protectio to pilgrims, but o the other had, we were soo to fid that there is coclusive proof that they did coduct extesive excavatios uder the ruis of Herod s Temple (as Solomo s temple was called after Herod rebuilt it). The real aim of the ie Kights was to carry out research i the area, i Order to obtai certai relics ad mauscripts thought to be buried withi. The Templars soo etered a phase of rapid growth. I 1128, the Papacy officially recogized the Order of the Templars, ad so did the Coucil of Troyes; the Order was officially fouded. I the Order s developmet ad progress, the sigle most importat perso is udoubtedly St. Berard who became the Abbot of Clairvaux at the youg age of 25. He rose i the Catholic Church s hierarchy to become a spokesma for the Church with the Pope ad the Frech Kig. It must be added that he was a cousi of Adre de Motbard, oe of the fouders of the Order. The Templar Rule was writte accordig the priciples of the Cistercia Order to which St. Berard beloged-or short, the Templars adopted the rules ad orgaizatio of this moastic Order. But most of their rule ever wet ay further tha beig writte dow ad recogized. St. Berard s documet, De Laude Novae Militae, or Book to the Kights of the Temple swept through Christedom like a torado, ad i o time the umber of Templar recruits icreased. At the same time doatios, gifts ad bequests, from Moarchs ad Baros throughout Europe, were arrivig regularly o the Templar doorstep. With a staggerig rapidity, the fledglig little bad of ie Kights grew ito what we refer to as Order of the Temple. With this documet, the Templars obtaied uprecedeted privileges ot grated to other Orders ad became the most successful military, commercial ad fiacial orgaizatio i Medieval Europe. As their leged ad reow spread from mouth to mouth, they became a multi-atioal compay with seemigly ulimited capital ad fiacial resources ad tes of thousads of traied employees.
