6 6 Website: N masoictimes@gmail.com Moroe District District Deputy Grad - Phillip Hurwitz District Deputy Grad Moroe District R W Phillip Hurwitz phurwitz@frotieret.et I periodically review what Freemasory has meat to me. Our Ritual ever ceases to reveal its time-hoored cocepts. Durig the 1st Degree, the ewly made Brother is preseted with his Apro. There is a part of the Apro presetatio which alludes to our character ad how our character reflects who we are; just as a Apro does. Let its pure ad spotless surface be to you a ever preset remider of a purity of life, rectitude of coduct, a ever preset remider for obler deeds, higher thoughts, greater achievemets. A pure ad spotless surface is a ideal to strive for, but what is a purity of life? Does it mea we are to strive to become agels? To borrow ad re-work a phrase from a sog by Billy Joel Oly the good die youg - I believe more accurately captures the huma coditio To have laughed with the siers ad cried with the saits. Humaity aspires towards greatess; but it eeds a mark to aim for. The Apro the, represets that mark we aim for. Rectitude of Coduct The dictioary defies rectitude as the quality or coditio of beig correct i oe s judgmet. So to be correct i oe s coduct meas what? Oe clue is foud i the Ritual, whe we are istructed to keep our passios i due bouds with all makid. O oe level, I ve iterpreted that to be a remider to ot let words or actios get ahead of you. Thik before you speak; remai aware of your surroudigs ad act accordigly. I ever have, or do I iterpret that to mea oe must be i lockstep with everyoe else. Sometimes followig your cosciece requires that you fall out of lockstep. Thik of huma history, where societies have tolerated behavior that has later come to be viewed as reprehesible (e.g. slavery). What costitutes makid is a evolvig cocept, which chages over time. What makid oce tolerated, it ow rejects. Noble Deeds The dictioary defies oble as the quality of courage, geerosity, magaimity, or hoor. For a Maso, obility is the ability to overlook petty piques ad grudges, ad accept the Brother for who he is. I realize that is so much easier said tha doe. I thik of the great leader Nelso Madela, who ot oly overcame withi himself, but leared to forgive his captors, ad wet o to become a presidet of a atio that oce sought to put him to death for his views. Higher Thoughts As a Maso, we are getleme. A getlema coducts himself as such. A getlema is cosiderate. Give up that parkig space to the workig mom with a carload full of kids. Give a smile to the elderly perso i frot of you who seems to be takig a eterity to eter their pi umber. Merge to the left so the perso to your right ca eter safely. Greater Achievemets Masory represets for me, that sayig that it ai t over util it s over. I other words, util your weary hads ca o loger grasp the workig tools of life, the your life s work remais i frot of you. What has Freemasory meat to you? Moroe District s ad Wardes Associatio By W\ Stepha Micheer Cotrary to the rumor that the oly thig the s ad Wardes Associatio is cocered with is the plaig of goig to Grad Lodge i May, there are may other useful beefits of this orgaizatio. Each of our twelve Lodges i the Moroe District has a differet character. Some of our Lodges go through periods of struggle ad decliig membership while other Lodges seem to flourish ad grow. Some Lodges are blessed with fiacial resources while others cosistetly eed to have fudraisers. Some Lodges plod steadily alog with the firm guidace of Past s, while others are beig guided by fairly ew Masos who are improvisig as best they ca. There are also Lodges that oly occasioally have a cadidate to put through the Degrees, while others are doig Degrees o a frequet ad regular basis. As s ad Wardes of our Lodges who are charged with the maagemet of a orgaizatio that has varied eeds, it is our duty to our Brothers who have elected us to do the best job possible i our leadership positios. To that ed, it ca be helpful to have a supportive relatioship with Brothers who are fulfillig the same roles at other Lodges. Sometimes hearig suggestios ad words of ecouragemet from Brothers i leadership positios at other Lodges ca give us ideas we had t cosidered before as we go back to laborig i our ow Lodge. Freemasory is supposed to be a learig istitutio where we edeavor to improve ourselves. The s ad Wardes Associatio furthers that purpose with the specific focus o Brothers i Lodge leadership positios. Regrettably, the active participatio i the Associatio has bee less tha fifty percet of our Lodges. Curretly we have five Lodges who regularly atted our meetigs ad, as Presidet of s ad Wardes, I express gratitude to my Brothers from the Lodges that are active. But, I also must admit that less tha fifty percet participatio is quite discouragig. This year we have edeavored to put together a list of Masoic-orieted programs from aroud the District that Seior ad Juior Wardes could use as they pla their Trestleboards. Oce agai, the umber of cotributios to that list is disappoitig, but what we do have comes from the same five Lodges that regularly atted our meetigs. I m ot really sure how to iterpret silece. What You Missed at Our Last Meetig At our February 25th meetig at Northfield Lodge Hall, we had aother excellet dier ad a pleasat meetig of fellowship. There was a supportive roudtable discussio about a variety of accomplishmets ad cocers that various members were experiecig i their Lodges. As we listeed to each others stories, it was good to thik to ourselves Oh, I m ot the oly oe dealig with that. We also spet some time talkig about those who do t come to our meetigs ad what we could do to ecourage attedace. Hoestly, we just do t kow. We ve tried a variety of approaches, differet meetig times, makig sure you re aware of what we re doig ad ways to otify you of meetigs. It seems the cosesus is that ow it s up to you to just show up. Hopefully, the Past s at your Lodge are also ecouragig your attedace. Special Meetig i April Speakig of showig up, we are havig a special cocktail party/dier meetig for s ad Wardes ad their spouse/ sigificat other. It will be held o April 4th, 6 p.m. at Hose 22 Firehouse Grill, 56 Stutso Street. As we are raised through childhood, we take i learigs from family, frieds, teachers, coaches, metors ad a host of other iflueces. As adults, we must make sese of these learigs ad make our way i life. Beig Raised i Freemasory is really o differet, as we seek more light ad learigs, aimig to apply these teachigs across our lives. The differece is that the Light we take i through Masory ofte teaches us far more importat life lessos. These lessos are provided to us; but we as Free ad Accepted Masos must, just as we did movig towards adulthood, make our way through the teachigs ad put them to use. No oe ca do it for us. Across my relatively short exposure to the Fraterity, ad from the time we are all Raised, we obtai more Light through our participatio i ot oly Lodge, but i subtle ways through how we work together. More ofte tha oce I have bee remided that, as a ewer Brother i the Craft, I must take i the kowledge ad kowhow from those who have bee doig this - i some cases, for decades loger. I doig so, we lear the traditios, history ad from whece we all came at the local, regioal ad atioal levels. We lear how to work with oe aother, as we strive for more harmoy i our orgaizatio. May wise words, for may years, have bee passed to the youger cohorts of Freemasos, ad this is a importat part of the Light we receive. I have bee very fortuate i my life to have had opportuity for educatio ad work. From a youg age ad ever after, I have maitaied full ad rigorous work across idustry ad academia. These experieces have taught me much ad, ow coupled with my icreasig uderstadig of Light i Masory, made me ad those I work with all the more focused ad harmoious i our pathways. The poit of this article is that we must ever be seekig more Harmoy through the Light we receive i Lodge, amogst our Brethre ad outside of Lodge. However, there is oe cocept we must ot take for grated i these pursuits. Harmoy is a o-hierarchical. Harmoy is ot a oe-way street. For our Fraterity to persist, Light must be ever sought amog all its Brethre, o matter their teure. If there is oe teet that has bee a costat theme of my persoal growth i idustry ad educatio, it is that keepig a ope mid to ew ideas is a critical if ot ecessary coditio for success. Whe we are ot ope to ew ideas, we lose that which is required to obtai more Light. Not every ew idea is a good oe, but our ability to liste to ad build off of these ideas, aided by our wisdom is a fudametal part of sustaiability. As a relatively ew Brother, I kow I ca add much to the Fraterity - both i ideas ad actios. There are may others like me. Like other orgaizatios of which I have led or bee a part, however, all too ofte we hear, but that is how we do it. Successful leaders ad orgaizatios kow this ca lead to problems. Outside of our Ritual work i Lodge, statemets of this is how we ve doe it, why chage? have the potetial to stifle growth or eve direct us to declie. If our future is to be a bright oe ad we are to be a truly harmoious Fraterity, we must embrace ew ways of thikig ad couple those that make the most sese with the rock solid priciples that make us who we are as Masos. 11 Website: From the Quill By Derek VaHoute, Recorder Let me explai briefly my jourey to the Recorder's Semiar i Tampa, Florida, March 1st through March 4th. Office Maager, Ms. Kari Staples, wet also. At the airport o Saturday while waitig for the o-stop flight to Tampa, I recogized a traveler at the podium that tured out to be P.P. Tom Vasile ad his wife, Debbie, o their way to take their first cruise. I fact, they were sittig right behid me o the plae. The 2-1/2 hours wet quickly ad soo we were i the lad of gree grass ad palm trees alog with 70 weather. We stayed at the Quorum Hotel o the corer of Cypress ad Westshore Boulevard, ot too far from the airport ad the beautiful Iteratioal Shoppig Plaza. Oe of the features of the hotel was ulimited M&Ms available at the desk for ayoe to help themselves. All fuctios were held at the Quorum, which i a moth or so will chage ito a Holiday I. O Suday, we took a bus to Headquarters for a tour of the facility, hosted by my Boss, Imperial Recorder, Jack Joes, ad Deputy Imperial Potetate, Dale Stauss. Sice I had bee there for a Membership Semiar last year, I was somewhat familiar with the layout. So while waitig for the bus afterwards, I tried to catch some rays. By the ed of the day 106 Recorders out of 195 Shrie Ceters ad, i some cases, their wives, were all together. O Moday, March 3rd, the Imperial Potetate welcomed all ad the we wet ito the busiess sessios. The meals o Moday ad Tuesday were icluded ad sufficiet time was offered for socializig betwee work sessios. It was stressed that all members of the Diva have access to Shriers Village ad ay Noble ca also access it. Shriers Village is easy to access. To do so, follow these prompts: 1. click o the lik at www. shriersvillage.com 2. click o "REGISTER HERE" 3. select your Temple Name from the list 4. eter your Member Number ad last ame (umber is o your Dues card) 5. click "verify Your Idetity" 6. eter iformatio requested 7. click " create your accout" If you have a problem, cotact Kari or me ad we'll be glad to help you out. Oly the Diva ad the Recorder's Office ca access the "Boardroom feature. Curretly at the Office we use the RED FEZ Membership Program which is similar to the MORI System i the Lodge for trackig members. A ew program that will allow ay member to access his persoal iformatio from ay computer, ipad or smart phoe is i the works. There were istructioal sessios o Isurace, Shriers Hospitals, Tampa Headquarters, By-laws (both Imperial ad Temple), Ceremoials, Temple Accoutig, our Legal Departmet ad Membership. All were preseted by the Departmet Heads from each group. Plety of time was give for questios ad aswers. Oe iterestig iformatio sheet was distributed to each Temple Recorder. Startig from 2009, it idicates the membership ad where it s goig. I our case, i 2009 we had 852 members; today we have 733. I the State we have 42,669 Masos ad oly 4,928 Shriers, which is oly 11.55% of the Masos. So the opportuity to reach out ad ivite our frieds to joi us is ecouragig. The projected membership i 10 years would be 519, but we ca chage that! Other stats were Demits (158) ad Deaths (0). I 1980, we had 2,341 by 2025 oly 5 Nobles. What are YOU goig to do about it? The last year we had a gai was i 2011, othig says we ca't do it agai. We all leared a lot durig the sessios ad are brigig home may ideas we wat to share with you. It was a great experiece ad I kow the members of the Elected Diva, who will be attedig their ow Semiars i the ext few weeks, will also lear much from our leaders ad be able to share what they received with all of you. All too soo we were headig back to reality (Witer ad sow), but the memories will be with us as we share with you what we experieced. What is a Commadery What is a Commadery of Kights Templar withi the York Rite of Freemasory? The Chivalric Orders are a set of three Orders (Degrees) i this Body; Order of Red Cross, Order of Malta ad Orders of the Temple. These Orders are fouded upo the traditios of the Chivalric Orders of Kighthood of the Middle Ages ad the Rite has therefore acquired the title of Chivalric Masory. Three Levels of the Kights Templar The Kights Templar operate o a local, state ad atioal level, but their religious activities exted across iteratioal borders as well. Natioally, Our Trust is i God From a paper prepared by the Committee o Masoic Research ad Educatio of the Grad Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Miesota The Church ad Masory are two subjects with great similarity, but also strikig differeces. Whe oe cosiders them together, there are certai basic truths that should be recogized. To review these truths is to recogize the true relatioship betwee them. I Masoic terms ad for this paper God, Deity, Grad Architect, Supreme Beig, ad other similar refereces to the Holy Father are varyig ways to refer to the Oe ad Oly, accordig to idividual prefereces, without ifrigig o the preferece of his particular church. Similarly, all idividual churches are, i Masoic terms, cosidered as the Church. George Berard Shaw said, There is oly oe religio, though there are a hudred versios of it. Yes, each deomiatio has its ow belief i what the Church should be. Masory takes o preferece i this separatio of thought about the Church, but accepts the uiversality ad the idividual member s preferece. Truths About Church ad Masory Two pricipal truths should be recogized about the Church ad Masory. First, Masory does ot replace the Church i worship of God; ad secodly, a spirit of cooperatio ad uderstadig is to be ecouraged i both the Church ad i the Masoic Temple. Sice ay misuderstadig is more likely to be o the part of church people lookig at Masory, rather tha Masos lookig at the Church, it becomes the resposibility of Masos to take positive ad affirmative steps to ward off ay misuderstadig. To avoid misuderstadig, it is essetial that o Masoic activities be scheduled at a time or place that would iterfere with activities of the Church. Schedulig rehearsals, for example, or there is The Grad Ecampmet of Kights Templar. This Uit defies the 11 Rituals ad laws goverig state ad local-level orgaizatios. The state level is called A Grad Commadery of Kights Templar. This orgaizatio represets members of a state or a area of equivalet size. Fially, the local level uit is called a Commadery of Kights Templar. There are almost 1,300 Commaderies i commuities across the Uited States, Germay, Italy ad Mexico, with over 145,000 members. Similar Bodies exist i other coutries as well. To petitio a Commadery of Kights Templar for membership, you must first be a member of a Masoic Lodge ad a Royal Arch Maso, ad must profess a belief i the Christia Religio. Commaderies orgaize may social activities, icludig Ladies Auxiliaries, Drill Competitios, Public Divie Services, Family Picics, Orgaized Trips, Dier Parties ad Etertaimets, Christmas Observaces, Easter Surise Services, ad Memorial Services. Itegrity, Obediece, Courage The Kights Templar is a Christia-orieted frateral orgaizatio that was fouded i the 11th Cetury. Origially, the Kights Templar were layme who protected ad defeded Christias travellig to Jerusalem. These me took vows of poverty, chastity ad obediece, ad were reowed for their fierceess ad courage i battle. Today, the Kights Templar display their courage ad goodwill i other ways. They orgaize fud-raisig activities such as breakfasts, diers, daces ad recogitio celebratios. They support Masoic-related youth groups ad they raise millios of dollars for medical research ad educatioal assistace. Curretly, Templar membership cosists of people from all walks of life, icludig doctors, lawyers, clergy, busiessme ad etertaimet persoalities, all of whom profess a belief i the Christia Religio. All Kights Templar are members of the world s oldest frateral orgaizatio kow as The Free ad Accepted Masos or more commoly kow as Masos. However, ot all Masos are Templars. Templary is but a part of the Masoic structure kow as the York Rite Of Freemasory. Kights Templars particularly support specific dedicated Charities such as: The Kights Templar Educatioal Foudatio, the first program of its kid, was orgaized i Sice the, more tha $38 millio dollars has bee loaed to 80,000 studets to complete their last two years of college. This fiacial assistace is give without regard to race, color, creed, age or Masoic affiliatio. These scholarships are ot grats i aid, but are ope to all studets regardless of their fiacial circumstaces as log as they meet the requiremets established by the committee. Gordo Hubbell, 32 DSA Trip Chairma the origial ihabitats had either perished i the war or retired to Lithuaia. Historias, who were either members of the Order or favorably disposed toward it, are loud i their praise of the wisdom ad geerosity of its govermet; while others accuse its members ad leaders of pride, tyray, luxury, ad cruel extortio. I 1410 the Teutoic Order received a most crushig defeat at Taeberg from the Kig of Polad, assisted by bodies of Russias, Lithuaias, ad Tartars. The Grad, Ulric de Jugige, was slai, alog with several hudred Kights ad thousads of soldiers. There is said to have bee a chapel built at Gruewald, i which a iscriptio declared that sixty thousad Poles ad forty thousad of the army of the Kights were left dead upo the field of battle. The baer of the Order, its treasury ad a multitude of prisoers fell ito the hads of the eemy, who shortly afterward marched agaist Marieberg ad besieged it. Several of the feudatories of the Kights set i their submissio to the Kig of Polad, who bega at oce to dismember the domiios of the Order ad to assig portios to his followers. But this proved to be premature. The Kights foud, i Hery de Plaau, a valiat leader, who defeded the city with such courage ad obstiacy that, after fifty-seve days siege, the eemy retired, after serious loss from sorties ad sickess. A series of battles followed, ad fially a treaty of peace was siged, by which the Order gave up some portio of its territory to Polad. But a ew eemy was o its way to iflict upo the Order greater ad more lastig ijury tha that which the sword could effect. The doctries of Wycklif had for some time bee spreadig throughout Europe, ad had lately received a ew impulse from the vigorous efforts of Joh Huss i Bohemia, who had eagerly embraced them, ad set himself to preach them, with additios of his ow. Several Kights accepted the teachig of Huss, ad either retired from the Order or were forcibly ejected. Differeces ad disputes also arose withi the Order, which eded i the arrest ad depositio of the Grad i 14. But the ew doctries had take deep root, ad a large party withi the Order were more or less favorable to them, so much so that at the Coucil of Costace (1415) a strog party demaded the total suppressio of the Teutoic Order. This was overruled; but it probably iduced the Grad to commece a series of persecutios agaist those i his domiios who followed the priciples of Huss. The treaty that had followed the defeat at Taeberg had bee almost from the first disputed by both parties, ad for some years appeals were made to the Pope ad the Emperor o several poits; but the decisios seldom gave satisfactio or commaded obediece. The geeral result was the loss to the Order of some further portios of its domiios. Aother outbreak of the plague, i 1427, iflicted ijury upo the Order. I a few weeks o less tha eighty-oe thousad seve hudred ad fortysix persos perished. There were also about this time certai visios of hermits ad others, which threateed terrible judgmets upo the Order, because, while it professed to exist ad fight for the hoor of God, the defese of the Church, ad the propagatio of the faith, it really desired ad labored oly for its ow aggradizemet. It was said, too, that it should perish through a goose (oie), ad as the word Huss meas a goose i Bohemia patois, it was said afterward that the writigs of Huss, or more truly, perhaps, the work of the goosequill, had fulfilled the prophecy i udermiig ad fially subvertig the Order. There were also disputes respectig the taxes, which the people declared to be oppressive, ad fially, i 1454, a formidable rebellio took place agaist the authority of the Kights. Louis d Erlichshause, the Grad, thus foud himself deserted i his time of eed. The geeral result was that the Kights were defeated, losig oe tow after aother, till, i 1466, a peace was cocluded. The terms of this agreemet required the Kights to cede to Polad almost all the wester part of their domiios, retaiig oly a part of Easter Prussia, with Koeigsberg for their capital. The Grad ackowledged himself the vassal of the Kig of Polad, with the title of Price ad Coucilor of the kigdom. I 1497 the Order lost its possessios i Sicily through the ifluece of the Pope ad the Kig of Arago, who combied to deprive it of them. It still retaied a house at Veice ad some other property i Lombardy. I 1511 Albert de Bradeberg was elected Grad. He made streuous efforts to procure the idepedece of the Order, ad solicited the aid of the Emperor to free it from the authority of Polad, but without success. The Grad refused the customary homage to the Kig of Polad, ad, after fruitless egotiatios, war was oce more declared, which cotiued till 1521, whe peace was cocluded; oe of the results of which was the separatio of Livoia from the domiio of the Order, creatig a idepedet state. All this time the doctries of Luther had bee makig progress ad spreadig amog all classes i Prussia ad Germay. I 1522 the Grad wet to Nuremberg to cosult with the Lutheras there, ad shortly afterward he visited Luther himself at Witteberg. Luther s advice was decided ad trechat. He poured cotempt upo the rules of the Order, ad advised Albert to break away from it ad marry. Melachtho supported Luther s cousels. Shortly after, Luther wrote a vigorous letter to the Kights of the Order, i which he maitaied that it was of o use to God or ma. He urged all the members to break their vow of celibacy ad to marry, sayig that it was impossible for huma ature to be chaste i ay other way, ad that God s law, which commaded ma to icrease ad multiply, was older tha the decrees of coucils ad the vows of religious orders. At the request of the Grad he also set missioaries ito Prussia to preach the reformed doctries. Oe or two bishops ad may of the clergy accepted them, ad they spread rapidly amog the people. Services bega to be said i the vulgar togue, ad images ad other oramets were pulled dow i the churches, especially i the coutry districts. I 1525 Albert met the Kig of Polad at Cracow, ad formally resiged his office as Grad of the Teutoic Order, makig over his domiios to the Kig, ad receivig from him i retur the title of hereditary Duke of Prussia. Shortly afterward, he followed Luther s advice ad married the pricess Dorothea of Demark. May of the Kights followed his example. The aals ad archives of the Order were trasferred to the custody of the Kig of Polad, ad were lost or destroyed durig the troubles that subsequetly came upo that kigdom. A cosiderable umber of the Kights refused to chage their religio ad abado their Order, ad i 1527 assembled i chapter at Mergetheim to cosult as to their plas for the future. They elected Walter de Croberg Grad, whose appoitmet was ratified by the Emperor, Charles V. I the religious wars that followed, the Kights fought o the side of the Emperor, agaist the Protestats. I 1595 the commadery of Veice was sold to the Patriarch ad was coverted ito a diocesa semiary; ad i 1637 the commadery of Utrecht was lost to the Order.
