1 The Spokesman PROGRAM: Larry W. Cates TOPIC: Suspicion & Sacrifice: High Point During WWI Introduction: Mary Sizemore Invocation: Rudy Hinnant Sergeant-At-Arms: Patrick Harman & Tim Mabe Greeters: Dwight Shaw & Mary Sizemore Nov. 6, 2017 Rotary Club of High Point Thursday 12:00 Noon 800 Country Club Drive Rotary Zone 33 Rotary District 7690 Rotary Club # 6062 Web: (club) (district) (int l) This Week at Rotary..... Suspicion and Sacrifice: High Point During World War I 2017 marks the centennial of America's entry into World War I. Discover the surprising facts about High Point's mobilization. The war effort brought out valor, thrift and self-sacrifice among those who remained at home, but it also agitated suspicions and tensions among various social groups, dampened free speech, and involved a great deal of propaganda and lock-step regimentation. High Point's experience was similar to that of the nation at large. Larry W. Cates is assistant librarian in the Heritage Research Center of the High Point Public Library and an editor, writer and speaker with twenty-eight years of experience in the genealogical field. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill (B.A.) and UNC-Greensboro (MLIS), he is past editor of the North Carolina Genealogical Journal and the recipient of the National Genealogical Society's 2017 Filby Award for Genealogical Librarianship. Last Week at Rotary....We were back in our regular meeting space this week, greeted by Barry Nelson & Monica Peters, met at the table by Sergeants at Arms Wanda Stewart & James Cumby, serenaded by Keith Byrd, and as always fed well by the HPCC staff. President Tammy Childress called us to order and stepped in to offer the Invocation. We welcomed one guest this week (Did not get the name). Our Moment of History told the story of the Iron Lung and Rotary Club of High Point s involvement in creating access to the respiratory machine by purchasing the truck that got the machine any and everywhere it needed to be. Thanks Kem Ellis for these wonderful moments and to Dave McCoy for lending his voice, this week. The Queen of Hearts took another week off but there were still plenty of announcements We have Hedgecock House until November 16 th to get our poinsettia orders in. That same date, we want to see you at Rotary after Hours after which volunteers will head to Publix to start setting up this year s structure for Designs to Stop Hunger. Volunteer hours are being split this year and more of us are still needed for either Thursday Night or Friday morning. We received updates on this year s Family of Rotary Event and the Thanksgiving program. Finally, Leigh Ann Kasais has us thinking about Bell Ringing, this year for the Salvation Army s Kettle Drive. It looks like another great season of giving and sharing for our Club! George White was back and received a special gift: an unmarked beer sample from his uncle Paul Green after Jim Armstrong made a trip east. We ll have to wait to see what kind of beer/ale it was? We hope George and all of you had a great weekend. Herman Hunter announced our speakers this week and we got an update on the Richfork Preserve Project in High Point. It looks like the project will see completion and open in Marie Poteat of the Guilford County Parks and Recreation Commission says the key for people who have believed in this project since its inception over a decade ago was: We didn t give up, we dug in. The new plan calls for family style bicycling and affords safety and privacy for neighbors. Ben Briggs of the High Point Preservation Society was also on the program to discuss the project. He says while the County will maintain ownership of the property the Preservation Society will be able to raise funds to maintain the buildings and land. That includes the old Hedgecock Farm. The good news is that the farm space may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Properties. We ll be watching and keep you updated on the progress.
