3 Last Week at Rotary... (continued from page one) Baptist Church and at High Point University locally. Hal explained that after once serving as program chair of this club, he couldn t turn down Dave McCoy when he was asked to speak. So Hal addressed to Club on Business Ethics in a talk he titled Hope and Trust in Troubled Times. Ethics is about the common good he said. It is about what kind of culture we build. And issues today certainly touch on such topics as trust, responsibility, service, and greed. Plus, in his opinion, there are four myths that need to be dispelled. One, there isn t enough money to solve our problems. Secondly, higher education is failing. Thirdly, Our religious diversity and growth has created problems. Lastly, Our country s overcrowding will cause us to have to cut off access to outsiders. Hal says we have plenty of money and compared the economies of several states to the economies of whole countries. Education wise, 2/3 of all post graduate students turn to U.S. schools. The world comes here for college. We do have more Muslims here now, but we have more Jews and Christians too. As our population grows, the percentages of the make up of these religions stays relatively consistent. And the vast amount of land we possess as well as our abundance of water make us a very self sustainable country. But he kept returning to trust and our loss of trust in this country. When we lose trust, we lost hope. Interestingly, he pinpointed the most trusted to least trusted people in the country as well (as in the world) and politicians were at the bottom of both lists. Ironic isn t it that the least trusted set the salaries for the most trusted, firefighters and teachers amongst them. The bottom line of the most informative talk is that we must bring back trust to survive. We must work together, use our influence for good, and separate myths from reality. In his closing, Hal spoke of his meetings with Charles Merrill of Merrill-Lynch fame. He talked about a war time encounter that spelled certain death yet he was spared. Upon returning to civilian life at home, he was given a weapon more powerful than that Panzer Tank he faced in Germany. That weapon was money. It could be used as an influence on cultures in either a destroying way or in a helping way. He elected to use it for good, to help. At the program s conclusion, Dr. Warlick received a standing ovation. President Richard thanked him for his talk on trust, responsibility, and service and then presented the speaker gift before he thanked visitors and adjourned us with the Four Way Test! See you next week at Rotary! Dave McCoy intros Our Speaker Dr. Hal Warlick PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS
