South Temple ROTARY AND THE BATWA PYGMIES Scott Kellermann, MD, Kellermann Foundation In 1994 the Batwa were evicted from the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest when it was made a World Heritage Site to protect the endangered mountain gorillas. The Batwa were given no land or other compensation and became conservation refugees. Initial studies indicated a life expectancy was only to the age of 28 and an annual income of $25. Over the years, thanks to the generosity of Rotary International, a 130 bed award winning hospital has been constructed, 130 homes built, a water and sanitation project completed and now the first nurses have graduated from the school of nursing. Rotary International s involvement at the Bwindi has improved the lives of tens of thousands of individuals and given them a life of dignity. West Temple LIGHT OF UNITY CELEBRATION Local Members of the Bahá í Faith Bahá ís all over the world are celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Bahá u lláh, the Founder of the Bahá í Faith. 200 years after His birth, the Faith of Bahá u lláh has spread to virtually every country in the world. Three panelists from the Bahai Community of Utah with varied backgrounds will describe the significance of this event in their lives and how Bahá u lláh s message of unity in diversity motivates them to work for the betterment of the world. For more about this program, see page 7.

2 September is Basic Education and Literacy Month Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. --Nelson Mandela You may not know it, but September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month. Education is near and dear to my heart for many reasons. As a Salt Lake Rotarian, I ve volunteered as a Franklin tutor. Additionally, I spent many wonderful years interviewing students for Service Above Self Awards President s Corner Brett Sutherland and Scholarships. What great experiences those are. I encourage you to become a tutor or to interview students on behalf of the club. You won t regret it. Clayton Williams once told me the reason for starting the Salt Lake Rotary Foundation was to give a tax-deductible method for members to donate and to benefit our community, specifically for education. He joined our club in 1959 and has been a wonderful member all along. We appreciate the donations for education and the continued support of the Salt Lake Rotary Foundation. On top of great tutoring, scholarships, and dictionaries.we educate ourselves. We have wonderful, and sometimes eye opening speakers. Every club meeting or event is an opportunity to be educated and to share with others. The impact of education in the microcosm is difficult to measure, but no one doubts its value. It is my hope that as a club we can continue to foster education for many years to come. Thank you for being great Rotarians and for your efforts toward our causes. Brett Sutherland Club President 2

3 Acts of Kindness Report An elderly woman who has needed glasses for years now has them because of Rotary s Acts of Kindness committee. A family of five can continue using their car now that Rotary provided a new windshield. A disabled gentleman can finally get into an apartment with Rotary s help with a rental deposit. An elderly man is able to pass his car inspection because Rotary provided the money for new tires. Eyeglasses, rental deposit, tires and windshield all of these unexpected expenses threaten the stability of eight fellow citizens. For about $800 the Salt Lake Rotary was able to solve these problems and make life much easier. Thank you, Rotary, for allowing the Acts of Kindness committee to meet these needs. Rolayne Fairclough Charles Dahlquist and Floyd Hatch at National Scout Jamboree Here's the National Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America speaking to 100+ Rotarians from all over the US as he serves as a member of Scouting's Key 3. He's been busy serving including bussing tables (in an apron) after a 5am wake up, signing patches, and touring with dignitaries who are delighted to see the continued improvements at scouting's greatest camp, The Summit in West Virginia. He's run the wheels off of his Jamboree assistant, [and reporter] Floyd Hatch, who can't wait to come home! 3

4 Rotary Club 24 Sponsors Career Explorer Post Third District Juvenile Court Teams Up with Scouts to Provide Career Peek Third District Juvenile Court s Village Project and the Boy Scouts of America recently teamed up to provide youth with the opportunity to attend a three week course intended to introduce them to different career options. Salt Lake Club 24 joined the partnership as the chartering institution for the Explorer Post. The program was a pilot project months in the making. The Career Exploring Program was created under the umbrella of the BSA's Exploring, Learning for Life's Career Education Program. The course was tailored specifically for youth in the Third District Juvenile Court. The program was supported by the Court's Work Crew Program, who not only provided all five of the participant referrals but also provided the transportation to and from career site visits. The youth who actively participated were given credit toward community service hours. During the three-week time period, youth were introduced to careers in Video Game Design & Development, Law Enforcement (which included a private tour of the new Salt Lake City Police Department by the Chief of Police Mike Brown himself), and various career options in Mechanics. The youth who completed the program were asked to provide feedback and surprisingly were more interested in a career in law enforcement than video game programming. The Village Project hopes to be able to offer this program again in the near future. 6 Brent Lange to be Honored as Chamber Champion Polio Benefit a Success Salt Lake Rotary Club members recently enjoyed the scenery of Red Butte Garden s Amphitheater and the music of composer John Williams performed by the Utah Symphony. Funds raised benefit End Polio Now. On September 7, 2017 Utah's business leaders will gather at the Salt Lake Chamber's 130th Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. This year the Chamber will recognize Brent Lange as a Chamber Champion. Each year the Chamber recognizes those in the community who have shown exemplary support to further the Chamber's mission and bolster the local business community. Light of Unity Program on September 29 to Shed Light on Bahá ís in Utah Bahá u lláh was born into a wealthy and powerful family in Iran in 1817, but He gave up all his wealth and possessions to bring God s Message for today. Because of His Faith, Bahá u lláh was imprisoned in a dungeon in heavy chains, exiled from country to country, and imprisoned again for much of the rest of His life. But all of this only served to spread His teachings to a wider audience. Three panelists from the Bahai Community of Utah will describe the significance of this event in their lives and how Bahá u lláh s message of unity in diversity motivates them in making our world a better place for all. They will also explore how the tenets of the Rotary Club align with the core principles of the Baha i Faith regarding service to humanity.
