1 The Spokesman PROGRAM: Dr. Sharon Contreras, Superintendent TOPIC: Guilford County Schools Introduction: Tom Blount Invocation: David Wall Sergeant-At-Arms: Dwight Shaw & Janice Steede Greeters: Justin Peek & Mary Sizemore Rotary Club of High Point Thursday 12:00 Noon 800 Country Club Drive Rotary Zone 33 Rotary District 7690 Rotary Club # 6062 Web: (club) (district) (int l) This Week at Rotary Dr. Sharon Contreras Superintendent Guilford County Schools Last Week at Rotary Tammy Childress, still counting down the days until the pass off of the gavel, was presiding last Thursday. She led us in the pledge and Steve Ilderton led us in prayer. Bill Kester welcomed a number of guests in attendance including a club past president, Pete Moffitt. Kem McAllister, still sorting through potential grandmother names, handled the special recognitions. Maybe we should have a fund raiser where for a certain donation to the Foundation you get to suggest a grandmother name for Kem and then a winning one gets drawn from all the entries. Think she would go for that? Probably not. Anyway, she highlighted a write up on our own Leigh Anne Kasias in a Greensboro periodical before getting into birthdays and anniversaries. And wow, birthday boys and die hard Clemson Tigers David Jackson and Clark Pierce were both in attendance on their birthday! Dave McCoy, fresh from District conference in Pinehurst, presented the Gold Club Plaque he picked up in the Sandhills to President Tammy. Joel Gentry was up next to give away some more money! Three more grants were awarded Thursday starting with a $ 2,500 grant to Lisa Hawley for her 'Feeding Lisa's Kids' program. Not only do they feed hungry children and their (cont. on page four) Read-A-Thon Project See Page 4 Still Giving Away Money! See Page 5 District Conference Flashback See Page 3

4 Last Week at Rotary families, but 100% of donations go to buy food. No overhead expenses are paid from donations. Lisa said they feed meals a month to families that total 500 individuals. Her financial needs are $ 11,000 a month. John Langdon of Helping Hands picked up a $ 700 grant for his organization that runs a backpack feeding program. Those funds will buy them a much needed storage unit. The High Point Arts Council took home a $ 2,000 grant to underwrite scholarships for this summer's John Coltrane Jazz Workshop. Debbie Lumpkins was on hand to pick up that check. Joel Campbell stepped to the microphone next to tell us about a summer feeding opportunity that is afforded our club. We need roughly ten people who will help some on Saturdays and Sundays through the Summer. If we get enough 'helpers', no one will be overburdened by the weekend schedule. Ken Esposito got everyone's attention when he came into the room, this week actually remembering how much was in the pot. However, he forgot the deck of clubs. While he retrieved them, Tammy reminded those in the audience that we are a volunteer organization! Back at the podium, Ken announced the winning ticket for a draw at the $ 252 pot. Ron Wimberly jumped to his feet to draw, but he came away with a losing Ace of Clubs. Tom Blount introduced the day's program, Mark Mortensen of Greensboro, who was talking on World War I and particularly Marine George W. Hamilton. He started out talking about some North Carolinians in World War I including a number from Greensboro. But he got around to his main topic and that was George W. Hamilton, who is also the topic of a book by our speaker. Based on reports from the museum at Quantico and several other publications, Hamilton was arguably the greatest marine in World War I. He was up against some stiff competition too as World War I also gave us Sgt. York, Eddie Rickenbacker, General Lejeune, and General Pershing, each with probably more notoriety than Hamilton. Consider, however, that Hamilton took leadership of his forces when 90% of their officers and over 50% of their company was lost. He put himself in danger for the sake of survivors and to finish their mission. At one point their 1,000 men had dwindled to 168. So why didn't we hear much about him? Well Pershing lent a U.S. Battalion to the French during the war and their actions, especially those of Hamilton, went unnoticed on the home front. Plus, General Pershing was given command of all U.S. forces in W.W. I so the Marines ended up fighting under the Army. In fact, no Marine Corps officer received a Medal of Honor in World War I because they were fighting for the Army and not their own service branch. Hamilton twice was recommended to receive the Medal of Honor, once by Major General Wendell Cushing Neville of the United States Marine Corps. He was a Medal of Honor recipient and 14th Commandant of the Marine Corps between 1929 and General Lejeune also made an attempt on Hamilton's behalf. Hamilton died in a biplane crash, preventing him from ascending to higher ranks within the Marine Corp. A couple of interesting sidebars: Mortensen had his father's heavily dented World War I helmet on display at the meeting. Also, Hamilton's father was known as the Dean of the Congressional Press Corps. Following the presentation of the speaker's gift, we adjourned with the Four Way Test. Rotary Read-a-thon Wrap Up Many Thanks to all the readers who showed up at Johnson Street School last week to read to the children. But we are not through yet. Every child we read to gets their own book and we still need to underwrite the cost of those books. Each book is $5. Thank you to all who have already given, but we need more Rotarians to step up and donate to this important outreach to the children of Johnson Street School. Let Dave know what you will give, or make a note on the Rotary Attendance Sheet at this week s meeting!
