1 The Spokesman PROGRAM: Rick Gillespie TOPIC: Market Program: Rick Gillespie, Sales Representative Introduction: Tom Conley Invocation: Bob Ferguson Sergeant-At-Arms: John Curcio & Carol Hughes Greeters: Tyler Adamson & Monica Peters Last Week at Rotary... With Market descending on High Point, Rotary was convened in a cozy ballroom three at HPCC. The pledge was on tap following Tim Mabe s welcome followed by Kem Ellis eloquent prayer on grace and mercy. Jeff Benfield introduced a trio of visitors to the club. New milestones were the call of the day for Dr. Joel Gentry s special recognitions. First it was Kobe Bryant s 60 points in his swan song and then the Warrior s 73 win NBA season to topple the Bulls record. Words of heart brake were shared over Jordan Speith s final holes collapse at the Master s and then there was a call for sympathy for himself as he had moved out for market and only Rotary Club of High Point Thursday 12:00 Noon 800 Country Club Drive hprotary@northstate.net Rotary Zone 33 Rotary District 7690 Rotary Club # 6062 Web: (club) (district) (int l) RESCHEDULED FOR THIS THURSDAY President Tim Mabe says no speaker, no problem. I got this! Jeff Benfield welcomed three guests while Joel Gentry highlighted milestones from Gene Bohi to Kobe Bryant. had channels 2, 8, and maybe Me T.V. (somebody tell Joel about smart phone, I-pad, and computer technology) Then it was more milestones, especially for a big birthday and a 50th anniversary for Gene Bohi. And if you missed his explanation of the difference in complete and finished, I will just say if you marry the right woman you are complete. If you marry the wrong one you are finished. And I will leave you hanging as to the definition of completely finished. You ll have to ask Joel that one. Natalie Crdilebaugh came up to introduce three new Paul Harris Fellowships underwritten by Dave McCoy but first had to share her own Kobe story. Seems she went to the same church as the Laker star when she lived on the West Coast. She said kids would always try and sit near him so that when they would pass the peace they d get to shake his hand. But back on point, she set the stage for Dave to make three new Natalie Cridlebaugh introduced three new Paul Harris Fellows. Mark Pierce stressed Service Above Self while Tom Blount introduced our stand in speaker. This Week at Rotary MARKET PROGRAM Richard Gillespie is a professional home furnishing sales representative. He is a longtime member and past president of the International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. He also has served on the High Point Market Authority board since 2005 and is one of the original Rep Ambassadors for the organization. He also served on the board of the National Home Furnishings Assn. from 2005 to 2010 as the liaison for IHFRA. Gillespie began his career at Hooker Furniture in 1982, working part-time in the shipping department while attending college. He worked in the corporate office for seven years before becoming a sales rep in North Carolina in He became partners with George Dowdy in 1996 while representing Hooker in western North Carolina. Gillespie has been with Hooker more than 25 years and received the company's James W. Roberts Award for outstanding service as a rep in 1998 and WISHING HIGH POINT ROTARIANS A SAFE & FUN TRIP TO DISTRICT CONFERENCE April members Paul Harris Fellows. Monica Peters, Nancy Bowman, and Carol Hughes were recognized with the prestigious Rotary designation. Thanks to Dave for his generosity in underwriting the awards. (Remember, you too can make someone else a PHF with a (continued on page two) SERVICE ABOVE SELF: Making an IMPACT Feeding the Hungry. Page 3 Our Three Newest Paul Harris Fellows Page 2

2 Last Week at Rotary... (Continued From Page One) $ 1,000 donation to the Foundation) Mark Pierce put on a late call for more volunteers to step up and show their Service Before Self side by participating in Saturday s Impact Club Food Packaging Event at H.P.U. With the Queen of Hearts taking the week off due to the Home Furnishings Market coming to town this week (she hates to be upstaged by anyone or anything), Tom Blount came to the podium to explain our program snafu for the day. It seems that Tom Conley thought the market program would be next week, so the bottom line was we had no program. The ever prepared Tom had a back up in his notebook in the car, but President Tim Mabe was already working on a program for June and agreed to move it up to Thursday to fill the void. So Tom introduced Tim who rode in on his white horse to save the day. Tim proceeded to give us a magnificent travelogue of Brazil. He took was to Sao Paulo where he and Debbie attended the Rotary International Convention. The architecture of the city was amazing, evidenced by the grand level shots and the rooftop skyline pictures. He educated us on Cuban cigars and the local s moonshine cocktails. We also had a glimpse of the parade of flags and introduction of the torch to the opening convention festivities. The stadium seating built to accommodate a half million people was obviously designed for the Carnivale parades. A condensed version was held for the benefit of Rotarians and Tim shared many pictures of those festivities through the streets. From there we toured many of the parks, statues, monuments, churches government buildings (not sure why he knew so much about the Secret Military Police), sidewalk pieces of art, restaurants, and a few bars too. After a short jaunt over to Rio, we got to see that great cuisine and beaches that city has to offer. Copa Cabana beach and Ipanema beach were close by and we caught glimpses of the sun bathers and the volleyball crazed beach goers. And the trip up Sugarloaf Mountain and the views of and around Christ the Redeemer were breathtaking. As Tim wrapped up his thirty minute glimpse of Brazil, Don Shaw could be heard asking.... are you going to present yourself with a book, obviously pertaining to our traditional speaker s gift. Dave put in a plug for next year s RI convention in Atlanta before we adjourned with the Four Way Test. 3 H.P. ROTARY SUPPORTS H.P.U. IMPACT CLUB IN FOOD PACKAGING EVENT Last Saturday, the High Point University Impact Club was joined by High Point Rotary Club Members (some with their families) and Interact Club Members to package food for a backpack program that will provide meals for area school aged children that don t have enough to eat. There was food everywhere as it was organized into neat packages for distribution. Even some children accompanied Rotary Volunteers and joined in the assembly process. A good time was had by all ages that worked side by side in acts of SERVICE ABOVE SELF. The Impact Club used a grant from our District Grant the Rotary Club of High Point and District 7690 to help make this project successful. Thanks to all who stepped up to help!
