1 The Spokesman PROGRAM: John Langdon TOPIC: Helping Hand Ministries Introduction: Tom Blount Invocation: Gene Kester Sergeant-At-Arms: Wanda Stewart & Bryan Norris Greeters: Karl Robinson & Wil Elder Rotary Club of High Point Thursday 12:00 Noon 800 Country Club Drive Rotary Zone 33 Rotary District 7690 Rotary Club # 6062 Web: (club) (district) (int l) This Week at Rotary Last Week at Rotary John Langdon has been the director of Helping Hands since he and his wife founded the organization in He has served full time in this position along with pastoring a church for the last 20 years. Helping Hands Emergency Assistance Ministry is a charitable organization that serves the greater High Point with food, finances, transitional housing, hybrid backpack program and an employment placement program. We have partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC from inception as well as being a member of the Community Resource Network and The Greater High Point Food Alliance. Helping Hands was selected out of 400 programs in 18 counties as agency of the year with Second Harvest Food Bank in We continue to strive to be the very best we can for all people in the greater High Point area.. We are entirely supported by the community (individuals, churches, businesses, foundations and civic organizations). We are the only category 4 food pantry in the city of High Point serving over 1,000 community members each month. His most recent article in the High Point Enterprise titled Man vs Menopause drew tears and laughter alike. It was an honest perspective of how hard marriage and life can be in particular seasons when you expect them the least. Honest facts about marriage, children, family and the pastorate were given with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. John and Joyce Langdon were married in They have three children, Lori Langdon Mooney, John Langdon II, and Ethan Langdon They also have three grandchildren. Tammy Was Back in Charge Kem I don t need a microphone McAllister was unfazed by the microphone problems. Our day s honoree, the other Kem, Kem Ellis, addressed the Club after being recognized by the Club. Kevin Did the Welcomes Thursday at Rotary was not your usual Rotary Club of High Point meting. Out of the gate, the wonderful public address system at the HPCC was doing bizarre things. One speaker in particular seemed to be giving us an echo and reverb and a lot of garbled transmission. Immediate Past President Tammy Childress did the best she could while subbing for President Jeff Fuller who was out in Vegas at a conference. We stood for the pledge, which was followed up by Stan Godwin's invocation. Kevin Hanson entered from the hall to welcome the guests and visiting Rotarians. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you who they were because no one could understand him. But I think there were five of them! Kem 'I don't need a microphone' McAllister recognized those with birthdays and anniversaries. David Pritchett was totally audible from his seat as he reminded us about the football pools. "Fill'em out and put your name on them" he said, and that was that! It was about that time that Tammy approached the microphone and either there was an alien attack or the P.A. System had had enough and the most gosh awful squeal and squelch came forth in amplified misery. (continued on pg 2)

2 Last Week at Rotary (continued from page one) After that outburst it seemed to behave and Tammy moved right into a special presentation and the reason we sped through what few announcements we President Elect had scheduled. Hopefully surprising him, Tammy advised the Club (most Vice President already knew) that Kem Ellis was leaving us to move to Washington State. Secretary Kem and his partner, Mark Livingston, are relocating to the west coast and that will bring to an end Kem's resign of 29 years as our club's secretary. Treasurer Fighting back the tears, Tammy spoke of the many accomplishments Kem has achieved through the years. From taking minutes, to snapping photos, to chalking up attendance, to the amazing accomplishment of creating so many club historical moments in digital format, Kem has served so faithfully and District Liaison committed to Rotary. He also brough the library on board with our Children's Membership Retention Christmas Program each December as well as the annual Read-A-Thon. Special Recognitions Tammy asked Mary Sizemore, Kem's successor at the High Point Public Library, to say a few words as she will be taking on many of Kem's duties. Family of Rotary "Lower your expectations" she said up front acknowledging Kem is the standard to which everyone will be compared. She spoke about a lot of Kem's Football Pool Master career achievements and interests, especially in the field of literacy. And for Rotary History you trivia buffs, Mary makes the third straight librarian to fill the secretarial Birthday Cards shoes, following Kem and Neill Austin. Dave McCoy spoke next and talked about Kem's leadership and devotion to Rotary pointing out he has been a Classification long time benefactor and the first to join the Paul Harris Society when Dave Orientation took over the District chairmanship. "Whatever Kem does, he does extraordinarily well" remarked Dave. He closed with the biggest understatement of the Social Events Attendance day.... "You're going to be missed!" Club Public Relations Eric Abeles Tammy then announced a proclamation that renamed the Rotary club of High Point Read-A-thon as the Rotary Club of High Point Kem B. Ellis Read-A-Thon. Kem was presented the framed proclamation. He also was given a desk lamp appropriate for a librarian that contained a plaque honoring him for his twenty nine years as club secretary. Kem, fighting wet eyes himself, addressed the club saying "going is easy, leaving is very hard". And though he will be 3,000 miles away, Kem is retaining his membership in our club and with the internet, he is just a click away! him the second of two standing ovations. We then transitioned into part two of our meeting where Eric Abeles, subbing for our assistant district governor Todd Shoemaker, took us through a required District exercise entitled "Building on Our Strengths to Envision Our Future". Rotarians paired off and interviewed each other our 'peak Rotary experiences' and the 'greatest strengths of Rotary'. A few shared their's verbally. One even pointed back to Kem as Judge Don Boone highlighted Kem's extemporaneous invocations that are so well conceived in the moment due in large part to Kem's spirit. Well said Judge! The 'interviews' were taken up and will be shared with district 7690 leaders who hope to gather some important facts they can use as building blocks in our district and individual club's. Following her thanks to the visitors, Tammy led us in the Four Way Test to close our meeting.
