This Week at Rotary..... Tammy Childress kicked off the last meeting of July with a welcome to Wesley Memorial UMC s new senior pastor, Jeff Patterson, who will be joining our Rotary ranks. After welcoming everyone, she invited us to stand for the Pledge and Don Shaw s invocation. Don started out his remarks by saying as a member of Wesley Memorial, he didn t want to mess up now in front of his new pastor. He did just fine with his prayer and his lost dog story that brought us all memories of our dear member Max Meeks. David Pritchett introduced one visiting Rotarian (our speaker) and five guests. John Anderson was making up for getting skipped last week had not one, but two jokes. Hmm? One had to do with preventing pregnancy and the other we thought might have something to do with a pregnancy.... sounds more like ones Dr. Curt Jacobs would have had when he did special recognitions. (for you newer members, Curt was an OB- GYN) Tammy s historical moment this week took us back to July 0f 1983 when R.I s President visited High Point to check out the new High High Point Rotary built Ranger s Quarters at the Uwharrie Boy Scout Camp. That project actually made The Rotarian magazine giving us International Coverage. And R.I. s President used our project as part of several of his future speeches. Greg Suire reminded us about the Rotary Night at the Hi-Toms game on August 4 th. Call Dave McCoy NOW if you want to go! Details in the Spokesman, page four. The volunteer GALs conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of these children s lives, facilitate their needs being met by helping locate community resources, and advocate that those services be put into place. Furthermore, we attend court hearings on behalf of the child to report to the court what we feel is in a child s best interest concerning their life. We do so until these children are out of the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services and into a safe, permanent home. GALs visit with the child once per month and make contact on a regular basis with the other pertinent people in their life to help advocate for their best interest. Most GALs spend 8-12 hours per month performing their duties as a court-appointed advocate. The time spent volunteering is flexible and built around the GAL s schedule. There are no educational or experience requirements and free, flexible, comprehensive pre -service and ongoing training is provided to all volunteers. Seth Houk (How-k) is the District (continued on page 2)

McCoy 31 Herman J. Hunter, Sr. 41 Last Week at Rotary.. (continued from page one) Tammy and V-P Jeff, handed out a bunch of perfect attendance awards topped by Herman Hunter s 41 straight years! Wow! See the full list on page two. Ken Esposito, who picked up his four year perfect attendance award, came up front with the Queen of Hearts, whose attendance is not perfect by any means! The $ 230 pot was on the line as George McLarty strode to the front to try his hand at the cut. He didn t have the right prescription as he found the 4 of clubs. Tom Blount was up next to introduce another great speaker. Bernie Mann joined us from his Our State offices between here and Greensboro. The successful radio executive turned magazine publisher was here to take us on his journey with the award winning magazine. Bernie mentioned he once owned the old WNOS radio station whose studios were a stone s throw from High point country Club s front door. It later became the very successful WGLD radio. He also mentioned several Rotarians who were in attendance and were part of his career path.... Bill Kester, Gene Bohi, and Tom Blount. He also mentioned that he tried many times to hire Max Meeks but Max remained loyal to the Lambeths and WMFR. So why did Bernie change medias? He said there was once 21 stations in the area with 21 different owners. Now there are 21 stations in the area with 3 owners. When corporations were allowed to buy multiple outlets, they gobbled up stations and dominated the market. So when The State magazine became available in 1996, he reasoned that he once bought rundown radio stations and turned them around. Why couldn t he do that with a magazine? So the magazine with roots to 1933 and contained few ads and only black and white pictures fell into his grasp. After all, advertising was his forte. And the daunting transformation began. It was a journey that took the 23,000 subscriber magazine up to 172,000 subscribers in all 50 states and some foreign countries. The State became Our State. Black and White became color and 48 pages grew to over 200 pages and advertisers jumped on board. In a world filled with negativity and bad news, he wanted to publish a positive magazine. After all, there are so many wonderful things done by people all over our state. And that positiveness carries over into the advertising where he told the story of one advertiser that submitted an ad that contained a bit more cleavage than Bernie was comfortable with in his magazine. A quick phone call got the ad changed. However, one beer maker that starts with a M and ends with a R stuck by their guns defending their ad. Bernie said not in my magazine and that beer maker has not advertised with Our State since. Bernie said he is very proud of the growth and quality of the magazine. He never wants to disappoint. And now that they have become a trusted brand, they sponsor trips and events. The magazine expanded over UNC television network to include a thirty minute weekly series. In eight years of existence, it has earned 16 Emmys. (7:30 Thursdays on channel 4 UNC-TV) Bernie closed his remarks by saying we all live in a beautiful place that we love and it is easy to hold up a mirror each day and look at the State in which we live. From a question by Joel Gentry, we learned that UNC -TV received a grant to digitize every issue of The State and Our State and preserve them on their website. After the Four Way Test, we exited into a hot, humid July afternoon. President Tammy has the year off to a great start This Week at Rotary.. (continued from page one) Administrator for the Guardian ad Litem program in North Carolina Judicial District 18, Guilford County. Seth has been with the GAL program for 10 years. His professional background is in volunteer management and local government, and received a BA in History from Wake Forest and a Masters in Public Administration from UNC-G. He enjoys working with volunteers and helping the most vulnerable citizens in our community have a voice in the juvenile court system. During his time with the GAL program, he has represented over 1,500 abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system. He lives in Kernersville with his wife, Amy, and three daughters.
