1 New Castle Church of Christ, The first thing I would like to say right away is thank you for being patient with me and my family as I learn how to be a Pastor. March 1 st marks six months down as a Lead Pastor for the first time in my life. It is the hardest and most glorious job in the universe. I am so thankful to be here and if the Lord wills, I would love to spend the rest of my life with you. There is nothing I would rather be doing than doing life with you all. Preaching, praying, visiting, visioning, thinking, reading, studying, and loving. Thank you for having me as your Pastor and thank you for loving my family and I the way you have over the past 6 months. We love you back. Over the past month, really since the end of January, we have been in the second half of the gospel of John. We started with Jesus triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem during Passover week and we will end this month on Easter Sunday with his great and glorious resurrection. This is going to be our pattern of preaching, typically. We are going to walk together through entire books and/or big chunks of books. I truly believe in this kind of preaching. Taking chunks of books or books as a whole forces you and I to come face to face with everything that the Bible says. For example, already in our John series we have seen something astonishing that many people have never seen. Namely, God planned the unbelief of the people (Jn. 12:37-38). It was his plan that some wouldn t believe. He wasn t shocked. He planned it in eternity past so that Jesus would be crucified for our salvation. These are the kinds of hard truths we are forced to reckon with while moving together through whole books. It will do us no good if I only preach my favorite texts every week. I will never grow past a certain point and neither will you. So therefore, I pray that you will love the Word of God with me and you will happily follow my lead as I preach through books and/or chunks of the Bible. I can promise that it will not be at random and I will always keep the life of the church in mind when deciding. All of this is to say that after Easter, we will be going through the entire book of 1 John. We are going from the Mission of Jesus to what our lives should look like as Christians in light of Jesus coming. I think we will all benefit greatly from it if the Lord wills. I would like to close by mentioning where I hope this kind of preaching leads us. My hope and prayer is that this kind of consistent preaching through books of the Bible would lead, yes to maturity and a greater understanding of the scriptures, but also to sermon-based small groups. I am already in the process of transitioning our Sunday school class into this kind of group. What I mean is that the Sunday school class (our only small group right now) will come on Sunday morning and listen to the sermon (or online if they miss) and during the week they will do their homework which is going to be located on the back of the bulletin. The homework will consist of thinking and answering some reflection questions along with reading some Bible texts that are related but were not in the sermon on Sunday. The goal is that as a sermon-based small group, we would grow in love for one another through meeting together and discussing the implications of the sermon and also go deeper in our understanding of the Bible by reading texts related to the sermon but not included in the sermon. This means that every small group will function the same because it is all the same sermon and questions, yet, every group will be completely different based upon the make-up of the group. And finally, this kind of small group, which is based upon the previous Sermon, along with homework and discussion questions, will be easy to lead. It won t take leaders hours to prepare. It won t take Biblical scholars. It will take people who love Jesus and his church who are willing to facilitate the group. All the work will be done. The sermon will be done. The homework and weekly study will be done. The leader simply leads the group in discussing what they have found in their weekly reflection. In the long run this could lead to a lot of people united together, loving one another, and going deeper together in God s word. My prayer is that we as a church would be completely united in one mind and one Spirit. May the Lord continue to do a great work here! Any specific requests from our church family Our hope is that each month we would all, as a body, as a church, be in prayer for all of the month s prayer points. You might develop a plan for how to pray through the prayer points so that all of them are covered each month. For example, I am going to take one per day, that gives me 1 each day of the week. I am going to read the passage of scripture and pray accordingly for the prayer point. The goal in the scripture accompanying the prayer point is so that we will pray Biblically as one mind and one spirit as a church. This is not meant to replace your personal prayer time and neither is it meant to replace your daily Bible reading. Let s call on our great God and savior waiting for him to do amazing things. 4 MARCH 2016 Page 4 The Guest House Men s Shelter Living Our Faith by Serving Our Community The Mission of the Guest House To provide emergency food and shelter for adult homeless men of Henry County To teach life skills and provide support in a healthy and safe environment To offer the life changing and lifesaving message of Jesus Christ to the residents of The Guest House To assistant residents to secure employment, education, and/or training and permanent housing Many rooms of the old high school have been renovated into comfortable bedrooms for the men. The Guest House currently has the capacity to house 40 men. Renovation of additional rooms is ongoing. All residents have daily chores and many are able to find outside employment. Others work around the building or volunteer at a local food pantry. An exercise room is available for recreation. Meals are prepared and served in a small kitchen. A larger, more modern kitchen is planned for the old school cafeteria. A clothing room provides necessary attire for job search and work. Many residents arrive with only the clothing they are wearing. Shop 109 Shop 109 is a Thrift Store located on the ground floor classroom 109. Proceeds from Shop 109 benefit The Guest House. Shop 109 is open Tuesday thru Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Donations of clean items are welcome.
