Kenneth Morgan Director, Rotary International, A native of Virginia, Ken Morgan has lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina since His first contact with Rotary was in 1978, when he was a GSE Team Member from D7600 in Virginia to D1440 in Denmark. He served a twoyear term on the RI Board of Directors from July 2004 to June A member of the Rotary Club of Chapel Hill, North Carolina since 1983, Ken has served Rotary as Aide to Trustee Chair Glenn Estess, as Vice Chairman of the Rotary Centers Committee, and Chairman of the Alumni Advisory Committee. He also served as Vice Chair of the 2010 Montreal Convention Committee and as Moderator for the International Assembly in Prior to serving on the RI Board, he served as International Assembly Training Leader, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, and member of two Councils on Legislation. Ken has been involved in the leadership of the seven district, Carolinas Multi-district PETS since Ken is a recipient of the RI Service Above Self Award, and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. In 2007, he received the International Service Award for a Polio-Free World. Ken spent 40 years in various nonprofit and association executive positions and retired as Executive Director of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors North Carolina in January Last Week at Rotary... Our host, Dr. Nido Qubein, President of High Point University, kicked off the festivities last Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Rotary President Tammy Childress extended greetings to a packed house at High Point Country Club. We were treated to the talents of Karen Jacobsen. With that GPS voice that we have all heard to her beautiful singing voice, the attentive audience was inspired by her in both speech and voice. The event s key note address was delivered by Olympic athlete Mike Schlappi. After a tragic childhood accident, Schlappi gained a focus in life that has allowed him to inspire countless individuals seeking victories and inspiration in their own lives. The Professional Speaker, Husband and Father of five delivered a message to Rotarians and guests that set the tone for this blessed Thanksgiving season. Every year, Dr. Qubein schedules programs that lift and inspire us. Many thanks to him and the Qubein Foundation for another GREAT Thanksgiving program this year. 2 REMEMBERING MAX We remember Max Meeks with great love and admiration. As Dave put it so well last week, Max meant so much to the High Point Community and to the Rotary Club of High Point, having been a member since September He served as our special recognition chair for over forty years. I was club President in when Max came to me and said it was time to step away from the weekly commitment of that responsibility. My heart sunk! How do you replace Max Meeks? The quick revelation was, you don t! We settled on four Rotarians to audition for the job. They have done an admirable job of filling those big shoes and we have settled into a permanent rotation of four to keep the commitment more manageable. Not sure how Max had done it week in and week out for so long. We were all moved last week by Mike and Karen I remember too thinking how do you recognize someone who gave so much to Rotary. Well, we did name one of our scholarships in his honor. But I made some calls, and with a number of people s help, got Max awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The Club presented it to him at a meeting we were holding out at Pennybyrn. He thanked me numerous times for making that happen, but it really was most meaningful to see that in a newspaper interview he recounted that receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was one of the highlights of his career. And Rotary made that happen. Glad our efforts were as meaningful to him as his weekly recognitions were to us! From 1/27/10 H.P. Enter- Who will ever forget waking up to Max in the Morning to find out what was going on in our city. He promoted all the events around town. He interviewed countless people on the air. He helped organizations raise money. And I can still hear the rattle of that cigar box after he read out many a birthday from around the area with anticipation of having my number drawn for that Sweet Shoppe Bakery cake and other gifts. That familiar a happy birthday to you coming from his unmistakably strong and equally familiar voice. I remember too that Shiny, Sporty Dodge Challenger he bought late in life. He told me the story of following his granddaughter down some highway when he got stopped by a light. She continued on her way. Max, not sure of the directions, thought he should catch up with her so he wouldn t get lost. Let s just say that when he looked down his speedometer was registering his age! We re going to miss you Max! 92 fabulous years.... that s a great start and a whole lot of green beans! Max s Service will be Wednesday, Nov. 29th 2:00 p.m. At Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Rotarians are Urged to Meet in the Church Narthex At 1:40 p.m. in order to be seated together at the service Visitation will follow the service in the Asbury Room Visitation will also take place on Tuesday Night 6-8 p.m. at Cumby s Family Funeral Service on Eastchester Dr. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Joe & Sharon Youngblood 31 Years Wednesday, Nov. 29th One of the true blessings of the Thanksgiving Program is being afforded a chance to gather in one venue with so many of our friends where we can visit and give thanks for Priceless Friendships. 4 Two very nice notes recognizing Rotary s involvement in the Fox8 Old Dominion Triad Holiday Food Drive are included here. Below is one from Old Dominion s Chip Overbey to partners in this drive. To the right is Chip s note to their company s employees, also recognizing Rotary s work. As Rotarians, we ARE making a difference in our community! Thank You, Folks on behalf of everyone at OD, we really appreciate everyone s involvement in making this happen. I just sent a message to our entire corporate office with a link to the stories from FOX8 and told them how generous Publix has been to assist in this endeavor. Kimberly and Glen, we are so happy you agreed to be a part of the Triad Holiday Food Drive this year. As Jim Himes mentioned, The Triad Holiday Food drive is the largest food drive in this area and without a doubt, it is making a difference in the lives of many of our neighbors who are faced with food insecurity. Also to the Rotarians, your efforts and hard work is greatly appreciated as well. I loved the train! It is very creative and well done. I am sure that the between efforts of Publix and the Rotary Club of High Point, there will be a material impact made on the Triad. Thank you everyone and I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Chip Overbey From: Chip Overbey Sent: Friday, November 17, :32 PM To: CORP Office Employees Subject: Triad Holiday Food Drive Update - Train Made of Groceries Good afternoon everyone. THE ROTARY CLUB OF HIGH POINT MAKING A DIFFERENCE! I wanted to give you some good news from the Triad Holiday Food Drive. As many of you know, for some time we have been soliciting other companies and community agencies to join OD and FOX8 to help raise canned foods for The Salvation Army s food pantries during the Triad Holiday Food Drive. Last year we had just under 50 participating companies and this year, the current count of participants is 55 including our newest participating member Publix. For some time we have reach out to grocery chains based in NC to help with the Triad Holiday Food Drive but in the past, none of the local chains would commit their participation as a partner. Well this year, Publix stepped up and joined the effort at their new store located in High Point. Along with the High Point Rotary, Publix is supporting the cause by building at train, out of groceries right inside the store. Publix is also providing canned food as well as an opportunity for shoppers to donate at the register when shoppers check out. Below is link from FOX8 s web site showing two clips from this morning s news segments about High Point Rotary and Publix s involvement. (Scroll down to the 4 th and 5 th video clips.) During one of the clips you will see Tammy Childress who is President of the High Point Rotary and also the wife of our very own Jeff Childress. Tammy has been very instrumental in working with Publix to help get them on board with the Triad Holiday Food Drive and we greatly appreciate her help. We also appreciate all of the support the local Rotarians have given to support the Triad Holiday Food drive So be sure to shop at Publix in the coming weeks so that you can see the train made of groceries in person. And while you are there, please thank Publix for helping in this effort. We need as many good partners like the High Point Rotary and Publix that we can get in our effort to eradicate food insecurity in our area. Senior VP - Strategic Planning Helping the World Keep Promises. Â Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. 500 Old Dominion Way Thomasville, NC I hope you enjoy the stories.
