VEWS AND REVEWS BY PAUL. H. STEVENS RED CROSS APPEAL STARTS TOMORROW March marks llp. openng of tle annual Red Cross Appeal for Funds whch wll cnlnue through the month of March. As usual, t s hoped, the people of wll gve generously. The termnaoh of World War dd not, by any menus, brng an end to the pressng needs for the contnued mnstratons o ths grsat humantaran organzaton. Now llat the wur s over questons lave arsen. Wll the need for many Red Cross servces vansh overnght? Wll tle glow of patrotsm that nspred our voluntary servce slnclten nnd de? Basl OConnor, charman of (he Amercan Hcd Cross, tells us the answers are obvous. "The Red Cross war on human sufferng" ho.says, "s never flnshed. The emphass wll gradually shft from the emergency needs of the arrned forces to the day-to-day needs of the homo oomraunty, but tle necessty for almost every Red Cross servce wll always exst. Patrotsm s not somethng to be lad away n mothballs for use only n wartme! Patrotsm devoton to the welfare of ones country s needed just as much n peace tme." And he teus us that the Red Cross s countng on ts volunteers who gave so freely of tme ard effort n wartme to gve just ns freely of ther tme effort n meetng the peacetme needs problems of ther local communtes. For the retarnng fervceman, for the dsabled veteran, for the dependent famles, the wdows orphans, the Red Cross volunteers wll be needed to help fulfll the countrys debt to those who gave so much. Here s what Basl OConnor says about the work ahead: "There wll be work for the Red Cross Nurses Ade Corps. The ades tranng experence are expected to bo a valuable asset n dsa.sters. epdemcs. There wll be work for the Red Cross Motor Corps. Transportaton wll bo needed tor the veterans hosptals, for. communty elnos all knds of local health-work, nnd nutomo- bles, ambulances, canteens, must always be held n readnessfor thejssteprhat strkes wthout warnng. There wll he work for the, oanteel workers, the nutrton ades. There wll bcecd of the Red Cross producton volunteers to supply comforts noeesstes : tojyeterans ard local cylan hosptals, to, help clothe the dfs;, ttuteotnsf war ovorsersr -, "ThafS Wlbe work for the Red Cross GrayJjadcs, to mnster to the dsabled veterans, nnny of whom face a lfetmewthn hosptal walls. Therewll be a need for recreaton workens, hosptal workers, redonl socal morkors. There wll be need of Red Cross Home Servce to see that the fghlrg man, hs famly, hs dependents are gven ad n ther needs problems. "Another specal actvty, developed by the Red Cross Water Safety Servce to fll a wartme need, has encouragng peacetme possbltes.. Soon after tle war began, the Red Cross, at the request of the mltary authortes, undertook a great program of water safety tranng fcr the armed forces teachng men how to swm save lfe under battle condtons a servce tl>t s beleved to have saved thouss of lves. Later, to meet a new need, t developed a program of canvalescent swmmng, devsed specal technques to help restore men hcapped by wounds or amputatons or sufferng from battle fatgue. Now extra dvdends from ths servce are becomng apparent, for the new teehnjues developed for servcemen can bo a drect boon for physcally hcapped cvlans as mell., s "And so, n hany ways, ths record of wartme servce ponts to the possblty of stll greater peacetme achevements, as Bed Cross workers turn to the tasks that reman to be done at homo. "The year was an outstng one n Red Cross hstory, but the banner years of peace may be no less outstng. As new needs arse, the Red Cross moves to meet them." WASHNGTON N CONNECTCUT We eame upon a feature artcle Washngtons Brthday n the Mddletown Press, whch was wrtten by our old frend, "Bob Bulkeley, who, n our cub reporter duys, -wns a wrter on the onetme New Haven Tmes-Leader. "Bob" descrbed the vsts to Connectcut by George Washngton as general, as ctzen, as presdent. He confesses that Wa.shugton, although he vsted Connectcut n all three capactes, never.slept n Mddletown. But Washngton dd sleep n Durham n the Swathel house stll stng at Durham road juncton wth the road to Mddletown, "Bob" says, also n the Beckley house n Berln. We were nterested, partcularly, n learnng that Washngton slept n the Beckley house. nterested because the Beckley house, whch stood n the "Beckley Quarter", near the New Haven-Hartford post road, was a shrne n our famly. t was the home of gcesatons of Becklej-s, the progentor of whom, Sgt. Rchard Beckle.v, was our rst New Haven ancestor. Sgt. Beckley came to New Haven n 639 on the Hector. He was one of the frst New Haven settlers to leave the tovra plot to establsh a farm n wlnt beeame. The house was sjtuated on Slver Ss road, pnrt of the orgnal place stll stng, ard was sold by hm n C58 to the Thompsons. Sgt. Beckley hs famly moved by ox oart upstate bult the house -where Wa.shngton later slept, n "Beckley Quarter", where the towns of Berln, AVethersfeld Rocky Hll come together. There s a tradton that George Washngton on the mornng after he had slept n the Beckley house stuck a small whp n the soft ground by the roadsde that ths whp grew nto a great tree. t s also told that young people gathered around hm at a respectable dstance. One youngster approached nenrer nnd exclamed, "Why! Youre just a man!" "Yes, young man," came the reply, " am just a man.",, Mens Club Mnstrel Show A Bg Success by lvelyn Lews nnd "Thats lor Mlrthlul, tuneful, colorlul. Me" by Marlyn DeWoU.
