1 HVOAlIAN MEllOl/.L JJnu^vY F.;.;*.! IL.TOII, CT. & It: ^ WHAT SOOSTS BOOSTS! MAKE A BIGGER, BETTER, BUSIER COMMUNITY VOL. V NO. 41 STRICTLY LOCAL.. VIEWS, REVIEWS AND PREVIEWS OF THE SCENE BY PAUL H. STEVENS HAVE YOU ANY ROOMS TO SPARE? From tme to tme we arc called on the phone or stopxnl on the street by someone who s badly n need of a house, a tnt, n couple of rooms wth ktchen prveleges, or even just a place wlcre they can "hang ther hat." Certanly n a town the sze ofenst Haven there must be a number of vacances occurng all the tme. It we only had a clearng house for such vacnnccs t mght be possble to tll them wth the most dese<vug home-seekers those who really need to resde n ths communty. In the past we have done what wc could to steer people toward vacant rentals whc\ we have known of them, often t has nol requred the placng of u want advertsement. If wc only knew of more vacances occurrng, or about to occur, we could, perhaps, do more. There are new tamles busness couples constantly comng nto East Haven as our local busness exps, all ot these would Itko to make ther homes among us. Wc know ot a few new school teachers who are nlread.y seekng quarters nto whch they wul want to move as soon as the summer s over. Those teachers wll desre to have central locatons those unable to get houses or flats wll do wth a room or two wth ktchen prvleges. The housng shortage bete what t s wth an easng up. of the stuaton not lkely n Ihe mmedate futuve, t behooves all of us to use a lttle cooperaton n helpng those who really need to Lve n East HavcM to fnd rents here. There arc otles we could gve ther names t asked, who are beng forced lo move bccanse of sale of Ihc house n whch they lve, These people, all ot them do not want to move out of East Haven lke t here. Thoy have proven themselves good ctzens ot ths communty Ihcy want to keep on lvng hen-. ]f ynu have rooms or even n room to spare, Ihnk these facts over. THE RED CROSS BLOOD PROGRAH AVo had tho prvlege last week of sttng n at a meetng of Health Eucators of the New Haven area when the Natonal Blood Program bttld Amercan Red Cross was explaned. Ths program, already underway-ll some, partsof the country, wu bo lunelo,d. n Gomeotcut ll tle Fall. East Havens Red Cro.ss unt, one ot the thrteen branches ot the.new Haven Chapter, s already leng alerted to do ts full share. Mrs. Erc Dohnn, long actve n the local Publc HealthNur.sng Assocaton other cvc groups, has been chosen to head the East Haven project. As the weeks move on toward September we wll be hearng readng ahput the Red Cro.ss Blood Program. Dedcated to savng lves preventng human sufferng, the Natonal Blood Program of the Amercan Red Cross olfers an unparalleled opportunty for men women ot good wll to rally to the cause of humanty. The worth ot blood plasma was proven durng World War II n the savng of lves of our defendes. Blood blood dervatves are needed n every hosptal today to releve the sck the sufferng among our neghbors. Only through such an agency as the Red Cross, wth ts vast army ot professonal volunteer workers, could the tremendous need be met. The goal of the program s to provde suffcent blood, blood dervatves, wthout charge for the products, to help save lves prevent needless sufferng throughout the naton. The Red, Cross wll work n closest relatonshp wth the medcal professon, wth hosptals, wth duly consttuted health authortes from tho natonal level down o our own communty level. The hosptals wll mantan the blood banks after the program becomes effectve only patent fee for blood used wll be the hosptal adnknstraton charges. Blond donors wll no longer be requred as they are now because suffcent blood wll le gven - wllngly wthout tee by the hundreds ot thouss who wll respond to the humantara plea durng the campagn n other campagns to follow. A moble unt wll be set up n Bast Haven at a date place to be announced later. AVe hope beleve Bast Haveners wll meet ths call as they have all others. rrst ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW It s such events as tle Flower Show, so successfully n the Town Hall Audtorum last week, that helps to buld the East Haven Communty of nterest, about whch much has becu sad durng recent years. The East Haven Garden Club ond ts cnlerprsng offcers members are deservng of a low-wde vote of apprecaton for the very fne work tley dd n arrangng beautful affar whch we hope wll become an annual event n JBa.st Haven come each.june. Out of town judges, some ot whom have been judgng at Flower Bows for a good many years, suy that the East Haven show was one of the best they have ever.seen. And these judges lucnt exactly what they sad. We uven seen many Flower Shows, but we doubt f very many held n communles comparable to ours could be any better. The audtorum stage had been transformed nto a delghtful garden settng wth shrubs, flowers other lvng greenery. All around up down the audtorum were Inbles set wth leaulful arragemenls exlbts ot.tune llo.ssoms. There were 48 classes n all, we were old, n wo dvsons, cultural artstc arrangements, from the bountful appearance there must have been many exhbts n each class.. The ethusan slow by the offcers, commttee charmen members ot tho Garden Club, an organzaton whch t.sef s one of the newcomers to Bast Haven, was especally pleasng. To have a group such as ths s, workng together toward a common nterest, s a credt to any town. The Garden Show whch they assembled carred on so well, was a credt to Ea,st Haven a joy to our people. We look forward to another fne Garden Show ul950. Combned Wth The Branford Revew East Haven, Connectcut, Thursday, June 16, 1949 MR. GARVINS ADDRESS AT E. H. H. S. Dunn, because they Were chldless, reached Into nn "Orphan Asylum" adopted a boy upon whom they spent much tme lavshed much love. Later they found that lads brother agan spread the arm of ther affec Hon to Include hm. But the thrd brother had been already spoken for lved In Danbury. But that tght crcle, called a famly had agan been rc-cslabllshcd for the frst tme snce the boys were seven. Tle Branford resdents were the oldest the youngest brothers the lad, who lved In Danbury, was the mddle-aged youth. Ther youth had been a successon of beng let out to varous farmers the oldest lad was to make three dfferent Insttutons lls home before tho Dunns brought hm permanently here. Because the gr couple owned a plumbng busness, tlloy allowed hm to become an apprentce Inthat trade. Because ho could sng they allowed hm to take bssons because they were Ood-lovlng Ood fearng, they Inssted upon hs regular attendance at church. In all three classfcatons they were wse In ther oholco. Eventually the eldest brother met marred one, Sarah Loretta Koough, of the Bradley street Keoughs, the couple began ther own adventure In lfe. One that bore three sons a daughter. Probably because hs own lfe had been so ftful tryng, no chldren ever In tho town had a more pleasant father. Hs wfe, even now, recalls how ho would woke In the early hours of»the day walk to the bassnet or crb play wth the babes, t they wore avfrake, or Just watch them n ther sleep surprzed at the mechancs ot lfe whch eventually brought hm the serenty of hs own famly lfe. In the early years the famly moved about consderably. The frst boy wns born In Fourth Ward on Bradley Street, Tho second wos born In tho poltcal domcle of Pete Carney Mke Rce, on Ivy Street. The thrd was near tho lbrary dvdng lne between the uptowners the downtowners. He frst saw tho llghtof day, accordng to the data dn fle by Dr. Arthur Tennoy, on the frst floor flat of the Harrson Avenue house, then owned by Mrs. Mary Crcem, now tho property of Joo Chuldlnl. Eleven years later, the grl was born Just to gve further locale to the pcture, she decded to ptch her frst C above hgh 0, from the second story apartment of the same house. Tho chldhood years were wonderful. ; Lvng next to the schoolyard. Pop (for by now you must recognze tho character) used to have a crcus umprng baseballgames from the ktchen wndow. In those days tho Harrson Avenue schoolyard was wdely used as a ball pastdro among the kds, despte the fact that It was once lned.wth stately pne trees. Boys would bo playng ball mornng, noon nght often the sessons were heatedones. Many tmes. Just before prncpal Ella McOrall would sound the old brass bell, endng the noonday recess, tho wndow would fly up an argument wth some Juvenle umpre would get underway to establsh whether or rot a youth stealng home Jad legtmately counted. It got that the players would have Pop call them from tho wndow, probably because hs voce was tho heavest. W.e kds always had a ball bat sometmes on a Saturday afternoon, Pop would bat them out to us. Once, one of the Zesner boys was playng shortstop Pop drove one to hs rght a few feet. The lad waved to It as It went past, wthn feldng dstance, Pop asked hm, "Where wore you on that one?" "Its no use mster," the lad shouted wearly as ho dsgustedly strolled after the pll, "ts no use".! He watched Pete Nalmo become a felder In that yard as the kd tred vallently for ground balls predcted that le would become one of the towns better ball players. Too, he watched Walt Brannlgan ptch for the uptowners agalpst tho downtow^ners on the same rockstrewn surface. Prevous to botl of ther rses nto thb athletc sun, he used to watch Vln Carhey spend lours on hs httng feldng. LIko all other sports followers In the town, ho was a great admrer of Frank MoQowans ablty many tmes vsted tho old Wess Park to watch the "Beauty" play. In 1021, when they gave hm a day, prevous to hs. embarkaton on a bg league career, he asssted to tho extent of helpng to ralso tho purso then gong to the Eln Cty to watch hm cavort both at the bat In the feld. ; He ddnt talce hs oldest son on that memorable day, the lad was only ten, but thereafter he brought hm to the games; at PurccUs lot where the Laurels baseball team played; to SUneys lot where the same green clad worrers got ther start n football under tho able rens of Bob Kcly. Later to Hammer Feld tho ball parks about the old Mddlesex crcut to glory In the ptchng explots of Bll Clancy, George Far KUnky Klarman, Harry Noyes, Pnky McTrottes. * The oldest son watched lstened to tlb arguments on Crsmans old bus, Elven now, he recalls that fne bt mmcry, John Van Wlo used to gve, when he Imtated the old stylo rado Us statc as tho able hs of-alton Crlsman steered the creaky vehcle to from tho vstors parks.,, Thus It was that a love of baseball, Indeed all sports, came to the son Pop would bo careful to pont out after thb game what he thought the mstakes were. A bt envously, the lad watched young Frank Knney keep the score for the bg team. It was always rght tle~flrst tlmp neatly dono In Ink. Even tho oldtlmers used to ask June what lls decson was on certan plays were satsfed wth tho answer, ^ - On Sundoys, he used to bo hcadllnosman at the Laurel games, n the days before they became a bg cog In tho pgskn wheel of the state. He started frst at Slneys lot when Art Dnhl Mckey Banko were adng blossomng stars lke Dave Hylenskl, rjllkey Cooke, Bearcat Kelly otler gladators. Ir all hs years of lnng the boll wth the yard markers, ho never blew hs whstle to call a penalty. He merely warned the offenders let them know that they dd not fool anybody. But most of all ho loved to sng. He wns not only a good snger, he mght have been a ;rcat one had he not had a sense of ollcglonco whch kept hm In Branford. Hs voce has been heard In solo at New York famous Carnege Wth the OBren grls, ho took lessons from Mrs.^ Franz MUcke of Walllngford asde from tho satsfacton of voce culture, ganed tho confdence one gets wth publc experences. Ho was solost In St. Marys Church, here, for many years self contessed crtcs who attended Sunday servces used to. wegh the qualty of hs yolco ono week aganst another. Many mnny an Irsh woman would vow that Blly was gong to sng to her fuuernl servces but most woeo wrong for he preceded many of Uem to a grave on the hlltop of St.- Agnes oemetary.,, He was a man who could wake up sngng. Indeed, before hs sons were ten he had them sngng the chorus work of. Glbert sulllvans operetta, "The Pnafore". We kds, sued to dress before the oven door In the ktchen as wo trooped out of the bodroom, seeklng tho warmth of a good coal fre, ho would llfl hs voce. "Srs good mornng". "Good mornng". Pop: "I hope you are qute well" Kds: "Qute well, you sr?" "I am very, very good, ard j want It understood, I comm a rght good crow" etc. But despte plens to have Mom tajto the part of Buttercup, she she never would consstantly. Then Helen was born he was sure that she could do the part, once performed by Anne OBren In the show at the old Musc But he grew HI before she was old enough to solo by then tho boy.s weregrown tho domcle had been shfted to Palmer Road. L We kds, used to have all sorts of fancful Ideas when we awoke nl nght after heorlng the fre sren callng Brnnfords volunteer hqso laddermen to ther cvc duty sleep wns alwoys easer when he returned safe from any probablo harm. Once when an qrphan boy was pcked up. at Hnnnlfords (the old Kelly homestead) after runnng away, ho expressed the wsh that ho had found the boy because before he was returned to the home tha boy would have a day that le would never forgot.
