BUS COMPETTON AND LAW ; The Mddlesex County Bus Owners Assocaton needs to. be remnded that ts duty to the publc does not begn and end? THrtth grabbng every nckel avalable. The assocaton mght ' ' also bo apprased of the fact that the offcals of Carteret have paome functons n the way of enforcng the law, and that the 'v Publc Utltes Commsson s not the only authorty to whch f' ', the bus owners are amenable. f the utltes commsson retans 3'control of the route desgnaton, the Mayor and councl wth! the polce force, at least, have the rght to enforce traffc laws. The traffc laws are very clear n regard to speed lmt? 5 and also n regard to overloadng vehcles or permttng per- ; sons to rde on any vehcle n places other than the seats. At ;. the meetng of the Borough Councl on March 21, Samuel B. George, propretor of Carteret Bus Servce, nc., nformed the : councl that the assocaton had prohbted hm from sendng JL.8 bus around Roosevelt avenue n the late afternoon when the : Wheeler plant closes, Of course the assocaton wants all the r "fates," and so has obtaned an exclusve rght to the route from the Publc Utltes Commsson. ; But t was brought, out at the same meetng that the out- ; of-town buses volate the traffc law at the Wheeler plant by l\ permttng passengers to swarm all over the bus, rdng on p radator, steps and fenders. By ths method they are enabled... to clam that they are capable of carryng all of the passengers s on ther buses and so deny Mr. George, a local man wth a lo-.' cal bus servce, the rght to travel over the same route. ; ' t seems that as long as the assocaton can represent to the ;.;'' utltes commsson that assocaton buses can take care of all V s the traffc, the commsson wll back up the assocaton^ burrng Mr. George and hs local buses. Asde from the queston of the traffc at the plants, there s much else n the conduct of the assocaton's buses that needs attenton. Whether the fault les wth the drvers alone or n a Schedule that makes speedng necessary, t s common knowledge that the buses travel some tmes at a rate n excess of the law wthn the borough lmts, whle the stretch between Port Readng and Chrome s a regular speedway for them. They not nfrequently hog the road and force smaller vehcles off the concrete. Frequently they travel at nght wthout rear lghts and seldom, ndeed, are they equpped wth stop lghts, nor do the drvers sgnal by hand ther ntenton of stoppng. A favorte custom s to whz by other cars, pull n front of them and then stop unexpectedly. The buses are a necessty but that does nut exempt tlv. 1 owners or drvers from complyng wth the law. nasmuch as they have taken an arbtrary poston wth regard to Mr. George and nsst that he comply wth the law nsofar as t can be used, to ncrease ther earnngs by keepng hm from sharng n the busness at certan plants, then why not requre that they, too, ' comply wth traffc laws n the nterest of publc safety. u A NEEDED RELEF > * Somethng should be done n the way of a concerted ef government wll be glad to turn over to hm.
