Our chldren get out of the routne of school and nvolve themselves n actvtes that help ther socal development n other ways and refresh them for a return to classes n the fall. Most of us get away from work for some sort of vacaton durng the summer months. As much as I love my job, I have to say that I enjoy t even more wth the perspectve that comes from steppng off the treadmll of crankng out a newspaper every week and takng some tme to enjoy the larger pcture of how t ts nto our total fath communty. Of course, we never need to take a vacaton from fath and worshp. But f we are not careful, we can get stuck n a rut n how we approach our fath. If worshp has become a rote acton of always attendng the same Mass every week, sttng n the same pew next to the same people, gvng the accustomed responses and then gvng Chrst no further thought untl we do the same thngs the followng week, perhaps we need some sprtual refreshng. Ths week, we look at St. Joseph Parsh n Dover. St. Joseph s the namesake of sx parshes n ths docese, the second most of any sant after St. Mary. When we thnk of St. Joseph, we thnk of hs mportant role n nurturng the Holy Famly and gudng and protectng the nfant Jesus as he grew to manhood. These qualtes are well re ected n the parsh lfe of St. Joseph s n Dover. On page 10 of ths ssue, you wll read of how St. Joseph s served the mmgrant populaton of Tuscarawas County n the 19th century and how t contnues to provde lovng support to a new wave of mmgrants n the 21st century. The experences have been vared and even adventurous n some cases (the jungles of the Amazon!), but there are memorable moments engraved n my heart from each experence. I stll fnd myself amazed at the smple fath of the poor and ther capacty to lve each day joyfully n the mdst of what would be dsastrous stuatons for anyone of the Frst World. I have learned to be grateful for small thngs a smle, a spontaneous hug, the flower that one lttle grl brngs me when she arrves at our HIV meetng each week, and so much more. I admre the reslence of our young HIV adolescents who have assumed responsblty for ther medcatons and can dream of a future wth a chronc treatable llness rather than of a death sentence at an early age. I have learned that communty can be bult, but that t takes tme, trust, and honesty. What power there s n the ablty to pray for grace and gudance from both our Heavenly Father and our father n Heaven. Monuments.

We honor presdents, our foundng fathers, war heroes, and other sgn cant persons, such as fallen solders. We also honor veterans of wars, such as the two World Wars, Korea, and Vetnam.

These monuments are necessary and worthwhle. They establsh a lastng lnk to our hstory and mantan a vson and drecton whch makes us better people as we move forward and grow.

Our many and vared monuments are wonderful to behold. We can go to great lengths to see them, tour them, photograph them, and experence them. What draws us to some, and not others?

Some memorals make us happy, some make us sad, and others make us proud. Whatever the case, they have a purpose n strrng our emotons, our hearts, and our souls. Our many and vared monuments are wonderful to behold. We can go to great lengths to see them, tour them, photograph them, and experence them. What draws us to some, and not others? It can be dstance, unqueness, hstory, how contemporary they are, or our personal attracton and curosty. We may not be drawn to some because they are commonplace, ordnary, or not perceved as very specal. The tme and expense we can spend to vst and explore and experence them adds up to qute a lot. There s certanly nothng wrong wth that. Ths s vacaton tme, and many of us wll spend tme observng monuments of all types. Wll we take the tme and make the effort to honor and vst our most mportant and even more common monuments? My famly and I recently vsted Baltmore and Washngton. We enjoyed some nterestng monuments and stes n Baltmore, such as the rst Washngton monument and the Inner Harbor. But we also vsted the Baslca of the Archdocese, toured the crypt, and acknowledged the tomb of Bshop John Carroll. Washngton s lled wth great monuments, and we saw nearly all of them. We also vsted the Natonal Cathedral and the Shrne of the Immaculate Concepton. We are no one specal, but t s always great to vst our relgous monuments and to see so many others dong the same. Our practcal challenge these next two weeks s to be sure that we vst our relgous monuments when we are on our famly vacatons ths summer. It can be as df cult as seekng out those that are off the beaten path, or not as popular. It can also be as smple as gong to those that are rght n front of us. Most mportantly, we must all commt to attendng Mass on Sunday when we travel, and make an effort to go to Mass durng the week sometmes. In the readngs for the fourth Sunday of ths month, we wll lsten to the 18th chapter of Geness: the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. When I read ths, I ask myself: What s the wrter of ths story tryng to communcate to hs ntended audence? What can we learn from the complete devastaton of two busy and vtal communtes? What s the sn of Sodom and Gomorrah, and how s ths story relevant to those who lve n the Docese of Columbus 23 centures after ths story was rst wrtten? The story of Sodom and Gomorrah takes place at a very early stage n the development of Judasm. At ths tme, the chosen people of God are stll very much a nomadc people, lvng n temporary shelters n the desolate areas n and around modern-day Judea. In such a culture, the noton of hosptalty s an essental value: someone walkng n from the Sna desert s taken n to one s tent, s gven shelter, and s fed, wthout excepton or queston. To ths day, ths noton of hosptalty, of gvng what one has to another, and n fact ths noton of charty, of kndness to strangers, are essental components of the Jewsh culture. Sodom and Gomorrah are wealthy ctes. Ctes, a novelty at ths tme, receved a lot of vstors. People, often poor and transent, would come out of the desert and expect the same hosptalty they receved n the tents of ther desert frends. Apparently, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah had forgotten the phlanthropy of ther Bedoun kn and would have preferred that ther vstors stop elsewhere. Ther desre to remove strangers from ther communty, and therefore remove the oblgaton to share ther rches, ascends to an almost fanatcal measure. And that makes God angry. Really angry. I thnk what the wrters of ths story n Geness are tryng to communcate s that holdng onto thngs, at the expense of people, s profoundly and utterly destructve. That our wealth, our possessons, have lttle value unless they are utlzed to promote and realze the well-beng of our brothers and ssters n Chrst. We hold on tghtly to our wealth. It brngs us comfort. It brngs us peace of mnd. Lettng go of our treasure or placng our resources at the bene t of another s at rst unnatural. I dropped out three tmes, one of them because of World War II and the others because of doubts about my worthness, but God kept callng me back. My (Catholc Unversty of Amerca) classmate Joe Bernardn (the late Cardnal Joseph Bernardn, former archbshop of Chcago) used to joke that I got ordaned n spte of myself. Msgr. Schulz path to beng ordaned n Columbus on May 30, 1953, by Bshop Mchael Ready passed through St. Paul, Mnn., the naton s captal, and the battlefelds of the Pacfc. He grew up n St. Paul, where he went to Nazareth Hall Semnary there from 1937 to 1941 and to St. Thomas College n 1941 and He was awarded a scholarshp to the Sulpcan Semnary n Washngton and attended Catholc Unversty there from 1942 to 1944 before enlstng n the Marnes, where he served on Sapan and Oknawa. After World War II ended, he performed garrson duty n Nagasak, Japan, one of the two ctes where U.S. planes dropped atomc bombs n Nagasak was the one cty n Japan wth a large group of Catholcs, he sad. Whle I was there, I got to be frends wth Archbshop Paul Yamaguch and brought hm whatever goods I could get from other Marnes and on the black market so he could gve them to hs prests and people. Msgr. Schulz, 88, sad hs tour n the Marnes led to hs becomng a prest of the Docese of Columbus. (St. Paul) Archbshop (John) Murray dropped me as a semnaran because I ddn t seek hs permsson to go to the Marnes, he sad. I ddn t know that was somethng I was supposed to do. But he dd gve me permsson to seek other doceses. A prest at Catholc Unversty gave me a lst of nne doceses lookng for prests, and I chose Columbus. He receved a bachelor of arts degree n 1947 and a master s degree n Hs master s dssertaton was drected by-then Msgr. Fulton Sheen. He stayed n Washngton through 1951 and completed hs studes for the presthood at Mount St. Mary s Semnary of the West n Norwood n 1952 and Hs frst full-tme assgnment was at Columbus Holy Rosary. One of the thngs I hadn t antcpated as a prest was that I would be a teacher, he sad. I was at Holy Rosary only a year, then was transferred to (Columbus) Immaculate Concepton. Msgr. (Herman) Mattngly was pastor at Holy Rosary, and when I asked hm why I was moved so soon, he sad Bshop Ready had bg plans for me. Those plans nvolved havng hm teach at Bshop Watterson Hgh School. Father J.P. Tague, Msgr. Edward Spers, Father Charles Essman, Father Rocco Cosentono, CPpS, fve Domncan ssters, and some lay personnel joned hm on the teachng staff when the school opened n The bshop wanted all the members of the teachng staff to have advanced degrees, and my master s qualfed me, he sad. I enjoyed teachng, but hated correctng papers. I d taken up golf after the war, so I also became the golf coach. He was at Immaculate Concepton from and contnued teachng whle spendng one year each at Portsmouth St. Mary and Columbus Our Lady of Vctory. He was chaplan at what then was a federal prson n Chllcothe whle he was at Chllcothe St. Peter n 1960 and 1961, then spent fve years as assstant pastor at Columbus Corpus Chrst. Hs frst pastorate was from at Mllersburg St. Peter and Glenmont Ss. Peter and Paul. That was followed by a 23-year tenure at Columbus St. Andrew, durng whch the parsh grew from 800 famles to 2,200. We bult a new gym durng that perod and we really needed t, not just for recreaton, but for Sunday Mass, Msgr. Schulz sad. Havng t enabled us to have Mass n two places on the church property at the same tme. Parshoners named the gym for me. They also entered me n the pro-am porton of the Memoral golf tournament 11 tmes, whch gave me the prvlege of playng wth pros lke Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Crag Stadler, Scott Hoch, and Jerry Pate. Msgr. Schulz retred from the actve presthood when he left St. Andrew n 1992 and was n resdence at Columbus St. Aloysus untl February 2006, when he spent a month n a coma because of kdney falure and other problems. He has lved at the Mohun Health Care Center ever snce and sad that except for havng to gve up hs golf game, he has enjoyed hs tme there. I hope nobody else fnds out how wonderful ths place s, he sad. They ll want to push me out. Natve Amercan woman blessed us wth her prayerful lfe and love of nature When I checked lectonary readngs for ths week, I was surprsed to see a famlar name. Wednesday, July 14, s the feast day of Kater Tekakwtha, daughter of a Mohawk chef and an Algonquan mother who had converted to Chrstanty before beng taken prsoner by the vctorous Iroquos. My rst encounter wth Kater Tekakwtha, sometmes called Lly of the Mohawks, came when I was a Grl Scout workng to earn badges to sew onto the dark green sash of our unform. Besdes badges, we could earn two medals. One was the Maran Award and the other the Kater Tekakwtha Award. We read about the young Natve Amercan who, at four years of age, lost her parents and brother when smallpox ravaged ther vllage and left her body scarred and her vson mpared. I loved learnng about ths adventurous teenager, who not only followed many ways of her people but also remaned true to her nner desre to learn more about the Jesus she had heard of from her mother. She eventually embraced Chrstanty despte the objectons of her uncle, a chef of the Turtle clan who had taken her nto hs famly and rased her as hs own. Kater lved a lfe on the frnges of her socety, taunted by others and threatened wth torture as a result of her Chrstan fath. Young men pursued her not because they cared for her or her vrtue, but because they desred the poltcal poston that came wth a chef s daughter. The young woman was not nterested n ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CELEBRATION The feast of St. Anthony of Padua was celebrated on Sunday, June 13, at Columbus St. John the Baptst Church. Tradtonal Italan customs prevaled throughout the day. Bread was blessed and dstrbuted and Mass was celebrated n Italan by Father Wllam A. Metzger, the church s pastor. There was a processon around the church before Mass wth parshoners and chldren dressed n St. Anthony robes, led by men carryng a statue of St. Anthony, wth a 13-pece marchng band drected by Rck Brunetto, and the Knghts of Columbus Fourth Degree Honor Guard. A recepton took place after Mass wth lots of good Italan food and beverages. The church n the cty s Italan Vllage neghborhood was lled to capacty wth parshoners and vstors who tradtonally attend specal feast days dedcated to sants honored n Italan vllages and towns Photo by Larry Pshtell GRACE IN THE MOMENT Mary van Balen-Holt marrage, and, whle her people s tradton ncluded acceptance of the choce of vrgnty, Kater had the addtonal motvaton of remanng unmarred to gve herself more completely to prayer and to the Jesus she had grown to love above all else. Eventually unable to bear her treatment by members of her clan, she ed to Canada, where she lved out the rest of her short lfe. Born n 1656 n New York State, she ded 24 years later at an Indan msson n Caughnawaga, Quebec, near Montreal. She was known for her kndness, prayerful lfe, and love of meetng God n nature. A number of sources menton that her favorte devoton was fashonng small crosses from twgs and placng them randomly n the woods, where she would nd them and be remnded to stop for a moment of prayer. Her deep respect for nature s not surprsng. She was a Natve Amercan who spent much of her grlhood growng corn and gatherng berres and other wld foods n the forests. She shared her people s love of creaton and saw t as a re ecton of the one who made all thngs. When she was rdculed for her fath n a strange God, she nssted that the God she worshped was the God of all, and loved all people. She s the rst Natve Amercan to be named blessed (by Pope John Paul II n 1980) and to be put forward for canonzaton. Along wth St. Francs of Asss, Kater Tekakwtha s a patron of the envronment, ecology, and those who work to preserve t. I thought of them both as I took a walk n the ran today. I began by openng the front door to see f the downpour was coolng the temperature, and then decded to take a few photos of a summer ran for use n future blogs. If you vst my blog, you wll see some of them. I ended up takng a long walk and enjoyng the beauty of the wet day. Francs and Kater both spent a lot of tme n the outdoors and encountered God n ts abundance. As we pray for an end to the travesty n the Gulf of Mexco and for healng of ts fragle ecosystems, we mght ask for ther ntercesson. Wth stormy seas and the hurrcane season ahead, our earth and the people who make ther lvng from the sea face an uncertan future. JOSEPH PROVIDES A WELCOMING PRESENCE PARISH HAS RESPONDED TO IMMIGRANTS SINCE 1849 Above and below: The exteror and sanctuary of Dover St. Joseph Church, bult n 1965 to replace a structure bult n To the rght: Father Matt Hoover, pastor of the church snce 2009 CT photos by Tm Puet When St. Joseph Church was founded n Dover n 1849, the cty was a communty of 600 people employed at several our mlls and other busnesses along the Oho and Ere Canal, the state s rst nterstate hghway, whch connected Lake Ere and the Oho Rver. For years, the town was known as Canal Dover because of the waterway s mportance to the area. The canal system reached ts peak volume n 1855, wth the ralroads gradually takng ts place as the state s chef method of transportaton and commerce. Dover had become a ral stop n 1854, and eventually the our mlls were replaced by steel mlls, most notably the Reeves Steel Co. That rm s legacy contnues to have an mpact on the cty, now wth a populaton of 12,000, through the phlanthropc works of the Reeves Foundaton and the restored Reeves Home and Museum. The our mlls and the steel mlls brought people nto Dover from ts earlest days. The cty was bult through the hard work of mmgrants, sad Father Matt Hoover, pastor at St. Joseph s for the past year. Frst t was people mgratng from the East on the canal. The advent of the steel ndustry brought mmgrants from Italy, Germany, and Swtzerland, many of whom were Catholc. The hlls around here remnded them of the Alps, and that s why there s so much Alpne-themed archtecture n the area, especally n Sugarcreek (home of the Oho Swss Festval), one of the communtes served by the parsh. The cty s Canal Days and Italan-Amercan Festval also honor that hertage. One of the thngs that stood out about Dover and Tuscarawas County was ts tremendous response to those mmgrants and ther desre to mprove ther lves. That s why ths parsh began, Father Hoover sad. Now we re n a new era n whch the county and surroundng area has attracted many Hspanc mmgrants, especally to work on poultry farms and companes that make wooden pallets. Ths gves the parsh a new chance to be a welcomng place and meet the needs of people lookng for a better lfe. The parsh draws members of the Latno communty from Tuscarawas, Stark, Homes, and Carroll countes to ts Masses n Spansh, whch generally are celebrated at 3 p.m. every other Sunday, and to ts Corazon de Mara (Heart of Mary) women s group, whch meets on Frdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Olga Bravo s the pastoral assocate n charge of the parsh s Hspanc mnstres, asssted by Carmen Bravo (the two are not related). Olga Bravo sad that Tuscarawas County has a Latno populaton of about 3,000, and that 100 to 120 people attend the Sunday Masses, wth attendance as hgh as 170 for servces durng the Chrstmas and Easter perods and Holy Week. Father Hoover celebrates the Mass n Spansh and delvers the homly n Englsh, wth Olga Bravo translatng. People say my Spansh sounds a lttle Italan, and they re rght. I don t really know Spansh, but I studed n Italy, he sad. I m learnng Spansh as I go along, wth the hope that some day I may be able to do homles n the language. Father Hoover s predecessor at St. Joseph s, Father Wllam Arnold, now pastor at Columbus Holy Sprt, began the Masses for Latnos after he came to the parsh n 1996, endng a 110-year perod durng whch the Capuchn Francscan frars were n charge of St. Joseph s. The mnstry for Latnos n the area actually started at Sacred Heart Church n New Phladelpha, wth a prest from the parsh at Loudonvlle, n the Cleveland docese, comng there, Olga Bravo sad. That meant an 80-mle round trp for hm, and after a whle he found t to be too df cult. Father Arnold volunteered to celebrate the Masses n Spansh, so the mnstry was moved to St. Joseph s. Father Arnold also delvered hs homles n Englsh, wth Bravo translatng. She moved from the area for a whle, but came back to Dover last year. She s at the parsh of ce every weekday to help Latnos deal wth thngs such as transportaton, medcal ssues, helpng parents wth questons related to the educaton of ther chldren, and provdng referrals to people who can offer assstance on mmgraton and legal questons. It s been especally helpful to be able to go to doctors of ces wth people and be a translator, she sad. Many hosptals and clncs have that type of servce, but most doctors don t. Her women s group gves Latno women and ther chldren a chance to meet once a week for a meal, prayer, Bble study, a short Englsh lesson, and talks on subjects rangng from medcne to geography to home care to mmgraton ssues. A lot of t s practcal nformaton, such as how to dress for wnter, whch s somethng people from warmer clmates aren t used to, how to deal wth poson vy, or how to make sure a home s safe for chldren, Bravo sad. Some of the women also have been knttng or crochetng tems such as purses, oven mtts, towels, baby caps, and frendshp bracelets for the annual parsh festval, whch takes place ths Frday through Sunday, July 16 to 18. Ths wll be the rst tme the Latno communty has operated ts own booth at the festval, she sad. We ll be sellng chps and salsa, as well as our crafts. Andrea Settmo, festval co-char, sad the event s one of the oldest of ts type n the docese, gong back at least to the 1940s. It makes money for the parsh, but more than that, the festval provdes a great bene t n the way t mproves the cohesveness of the parsh, the thought that we re a varety of people unted n a common fath, she sad. Havng the Latno booth wll add to that n a great way. Besdes havng n atables and games for chldren, a mnature golf course bult as an Eagle Scout project, other hands-on actvtes, and booths by parsh organzatons, the festval wll feature Swss steak on Frday, an Italan dnner on Saturday, and a chcken barbecue on Sunday. Entertanment wll be provded Frday by local classc rock group LaFlavour, Saturday by hard and soft rock group Half Fast, and Sunday by the Dover Hgh School steel drum band and the Moonlghters. Located across Tuscarawas Avenue from the church are ts former school buldng, now Tuscarawas Central Catholc Elementary School, and a Famly Lfe Center, dedcated n 2007, whch has enabled the parsh to greatly ncrease ts outreach to the communty. The center was bult through donatons from parshoners, a large bequest from the estate of parsh member Elzabeth Bodner, and a $300,000 anonymous donaton. The 15,000-square-foot buldng has two stores and a basement, wth eght meetng rooms avalable for parsh and communty actvtes. The man reason the center was bult was to accommodate the needs of parsh organzatons for meetng space, sad Bran Bauer, the buldng s archtect, who s presdent of the parsh councl. The school needed space for ts own events, and ths gave everyone ample room. It also gave us a wonderful opportunty to help the free clnc when t was formed. Bauer was referrng to the Tuscarawas Clnc for the Workng Unnsured, whch s not part of the church but uses rooms on the second oor of the center to see patents. The clnc had been n the plannng stages for three years before t opened ths past January, sad Shelley Broadbent, ts executve drector. Beng able to have t at St. Joseph s gave us a central locaton n a new buldng that was deal for the clnc s needs. The clnc s open from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, wth staff members helpng people wth medcal forms, conductng pre-screenngs, gvng classes, and answerng questons. From 5 to 9 p.m., members of a team of 11 physcans, plus physcan assstants, nurses, nurse practtoners, and others are avalable to provde medcal help at no charge, prescrbe medcaton, and make referrals to specalsts as needed. Broadbent sad 10 to 13 patents come to the clnc each Wednesday. The clnc s a servce of Unon Hosptal n Dover and Twn Cty Hosptal n Dennson. The parsh also operates a food pantry n ts basement on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for people who call for an appontment. Its drector, Barb Graef, sad the pantry, started by Father Arnold 14 years ago, ads 15 to 20 people a week. The pantry doesn t have any other restrctons, other than that people are lmted to usng t once a month, she sad. When people call and ask for help, we help them. All the food s donated by parshoners. Requests have slowly gone up, Graef sad. We used to have about 10 to 12 a week. We ve found that a lot of older people are usng the pantry now, as well as sngle people wth no jobs. If you have chldren, there are government programs whch help, but we nd that especally wth the elderly, many of them don t qualfy for ad other than ths. If you re on a xed ncome, t s becomng more frequent that by the tme your medcaton and rent s pad, there s lttle left for food. Father Hoover s aded by Deacon Ron Fondrest, who s about to celebrate hs 31st annversary n the daconate, all of them assstng the ve pastors who have served St. Joseph s durng that tme. Deacon Fondrest sad the parsh, the largest n the Tuscarawas-Holmes-Coshocton Deanery, has about 1,300 famles and has characterstcs of both a cty and a rural church. Our membershp s concentrated n Dover, but the parsh also takes n the outlyng areas of Sugarcreek, Strasburg, Dundee, and Wn eld, so t s pretty spread out, he sad. July 18, 2010 Catholc Tmes 15 Keepng God n the Publc Square All too often n our modern world, we don t want to be accused of beng some sort of relgous holy roller or extremst, so we go along wth our ncreasngly secular socety and rarely menton anythng about God or relgon. Recently, whle eatng wth my famly at a popular local restaurant, I notced what seemed lke a large table of two famles prayng and makng the Sgn of the Cross before ther meal. Though I couldn t hear what the tables around us were sayng, t de ntely caught my attenton. It got me to thnk about dong the small thngs to keep God n the publc square (meanng mentonng God n publc) n a world where many people know lttle about Hm. Some tme ago, I remember talkng wth a Catholc from the northeastern Unted States. We don t menton relgon much n publc, t really sn t our hstory, and we are more European n our outlook, he sad. I remnded the man that t once was part of ther hstory and, as far as Europe s concerned, t has only been recently that relgon has lost ts place n the publc square. Today, even n the most secular, hstorcally Catholc-orented European countres, holy days are stll publc holdays. We de ntely use God when we feel t s to our advantage. Perhaps that s why the sayng There are no athests n foxholes resonates so much. Some naysayers mght add, Ddn t St Francs say, Preach the Gospel and use words when THE TIDE IS TURNING TOWARD CATHOLICISM Davd Hartlne absolutely necessary? Yes, that s true. However, when St Francs sad ths, practcally everyone wthn a few days voyage was Catholc. He wanted to make sure people lved ther fath, not just used words. The problem today s that so many people are gnorant of the ways of God, let alone the Chrstan message. I recall a young woman tellng me that she was qute proud that her Catholc campus group gathered so many boxes of food for the needy. She went on to say that soon afterward, she was mocked by campus athests who sad they had gathered more boxes. She realzed she had better understand why her group dd what t dd. Ths prompted her to more deeply study her Catholc fath, the words of Jesus n Sacred Scrpture, the words of Apostles and Church fathers n Sacred Tradton, and the words of Church leaders n the Catholc Catechsm. Some people mght object to ths column, sayng, Ddn t Jesus asked us to close our door and pray n prvate? Yes, he dd say ths to those n Jerusalem who had the troublng habt of announcng ther prayers to God and tellng everyone how much they were gvng to the Temple treasury. They often dd ths by blowng trumpets and announcng t wth great fanfare. I don t see that today on our cty or small-town streets. Agan, some mght say Ddn t the Foundng Fathers object to relgon? Well, yes, some of the Foundng Fathers were dests (those who thnk God mght have exsted, but aren t sure of hs current role). Thomas Jefferson s a good example of ths. However, even Jefferson ddn t want relgon mpeded, and many other Foundng Fathers, ncludng George Washngton, openly practced ther fath. Ther objecton was to a state-sponsored relgon such as the Church of England (the Anglcan Church), whch was essentally run by the kng. The Foundng Fathers beleved n freedom of relgon, not freedom from relgon, whch s what some mltant secularsts want to mpose upon us. As we enjoy the lazy days of summer and hopefully a vacaton to boot, let us along the way not forget God s goodness, mercy, and love. Perhaps we mght want to menton God s goodness, mercy, and love n a publc settng to remnd a troubled world of what t s mssng. Columbus wll reman on the unversty s communcatons staff n a part-tme role as edtor emertus. Matt Dewald, managng edtor of the Unversty of Dayton Magazne, has been promoted to edtor. Mchelle Tedford, drector of unversty communcatons, takes on the addtonal role of managng edtor. Ths collecton culmnates Columbus 43-year career at the Unversty of Dayton. Fresh from earnng a master s degree n Englsh from the Unversty of Vrgna, he arrved on campus n 1967 for a one-year assgnment teachng Englsh and stayed -- sx years n the Englsh department and 37 years n the unversty s communcatons of ce as a wrter and edtor. In the rst year of the column, I wrote of the deaths of (former basketball coach) Tom Frercks and (former unversty presdent) Father Raymond Roesch, SM, two gants n makng UD a major natonal unversty. So from the begnnng, the column re ected on lfe and death, on God and grace, on the underpnnngs of the nature of ths unversty, Columbus sad. When our youngest chld ded, I hestated to brng my famly lfe nto the spotlght. But over the years I have been thanked by many for sharng my sorrow, for jonng n ther attempts to face lfe and death, to love God and accept hs grace. I have learned much about what a communty can be. Maybe others wll see n ths book somethng of the wonder of the communty that s the Unversty of Dayton, he sad. A graduate of Cleveland St. Ignatus Hgh School and the College of the Holy Cross, Columbus edted hs hgh school newspaper, The Eye, but never envsoned a career as an edtor/ wrter. It s hs callng. Hs work has garnered more than two dozen natonal honors from the Councl for the Advancement and Support of Educaton, whose annual awards program showcases the best work on college and unversty campuses worldwde.
