2 -fcnrtr WMtt 0 ^_ lt > 'X X < VLUME VL RCHMND KV FRDAY, DECEMBER 2, 928 Number 6 SCHL GREETS DNVAN, DEAN Celebrates Return of Cooper and Presdent from Southern Assocaton Meetng ARE MET WTH MTRCADE Carryng out plans formulated at the convocaton held last Frday mornng, students and faculty members of Eastern joned n two meetngs to celebrate the_ return of Dr H L Donovan and Dean Homer E Cooper from the meetng of the Assocaton of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Southern States At ths meetng, whch was held last week at Fort Worth, Texas, Eastern was gven full membershp n the Assocaton The returnng delegates were greeted at the staton n Lexngton by the advance guard of a motorcade whch ncreased as t was met along the route by a number of cars from Rchmond Upon ther arrval at the school they were escorted to the football feld where they were greeted by the entre student body n the lght of a huge bon fre The celebraton, whch lasted for two hours, was the clmax of the week end of rejocng whch b gun when the news was made publc Frday Monday mornng n chapel a convocaton of students was addressed by Dr Donovan and Dean Cooper, who rected the advantages accrung to Eastern as a result of ther admsson nto the- Assocaton Dr Donovan, who spoke frst,sald that membershp n the Assocaton bestows prvlege and honor and places certan responsbltes on member schools The greatest beneft s, of course, derved by the students, snce they not only graduate from a fully accredted nsttuton, but are fully qualfed to do graduate work; t also means much to faculty members to teach n such a school He also sad that one of the factors responsble for Eastern's acceptance was the hgh poston many of ts faculty members have attaned n the educatonal world Mr Donovan gave some detals of the meetng at Fort Worth and closed by payng trubte to Dean Cooper for hs treless efforts n gatherng necessary data and presentng t n hs talk Dean Cooper, who has been connected n an offcal capacty wth teachers colleges for several years, gave some of the hstory of Eastern pror to ts entrance nto the Assocaton W Snce becomng a four year college n 925 Eastern has conferred 00 degrees n 927 t went nto the Kentucky Assocaton of Colleges and Unverstes, and n the same year the late Presdent T J Coates was elected presdent of that body Durng February of ths year Eastern went nto the Amercan Assocaton of Teachers Colleges, recevng a very hgh ratng although the standards of ths group are hgher n many respects than those of the Southern Assocaton Membershp n ths body, he stated, wll mean much to the schools n future years The admttance of Eastern nto these assocatons denotes great mprovement; specal attenton has been gven to mprovement n preparaton of faculty, salares and entrance requrements, he sad n closng At the close of the convocaton Dr Donovan and Dean Cooper were each presented wth a basket of flowers on behalf oh the student body by Susan Helm and Swepton Clayton HME EC CLUB The Home Economcs Club gave a Chrstmas party Monday evenng at the Home Economcs rooms n Sullvan Hall The rooms were attractvely decorated n cedar, Chrstnas bells, etc, and an llumned Chrstmas tree gave that Yuletde atmosphere, so much assocated wth Chrstmas sprt Games were played, lunch served, and gfts dstrbuted Kng Fun regned throughout the evenng CAPTAN CMBS Beckham Combs, son of Mr and Mrs "Bg" John S Combs, was born at Vest, Knott county Beck came to Eastern some seven or eght years ago to fnsh hs grade work and enter the Normal School He has been n school here ever snce, takng part n the football and basketball actvtes of Eastern thru all these years When Beck came here the Normal School people were allowed to play on the varsty athletc teams, accountng for hs many years of playng under the Maroon and Whte colors n the fall of '25 he was captan of the football team Last year he was selected by many coaches and some sport wrters as an all-state tackle and was agan elected captan of the Maroon grd warrors to lead the frst varsty team under the S A A membershp Beck s a senor and hs graduaton wll remove from the game one of the best football players of the state and probably the best, most consstent player that Eastern has ever produced GREETNGS!
