The followng s an excerpt from hs letter and the speech he delvered at the ceremones: The launchng of "Hope-ctory" was a grand success n every way. The shp tself was very beautful, and the launchng was extremely mpressve. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kaser were both present and they had nvted a number of the notables from the San Francsco UNCO as ther guests. Among them were Major and Mrs. George Feldng Elot, Mr. and Mrs. H.. Kaltenbom, and many other nternatonally known correspondents and rado analysts. t was a strkngly cordal and democratc group so that Mayme and came to know them very well. Prof. Mulenberg delvered the followng speech: Among the many thousand ctes whch fashon us nto a great Amercan commonwealth, a few reflect n vvd fashon the country of ther orgn. Lttle Denmarks, Norways, and Polands have grown up throughout our land. On the shores of Lake Mchgan there rses a lttle Holland, a Holland whose atmosphere s stll redolent of the ways and thoughts of the homeland. Here each year men gather from f a r and wde to celebrate the festval of the tulp tme. The streets sound wth the beat of wooden shoes on pavements scrubbed by matrons and ther daughters of a newer Netherlands. n ths arrestng spot poneers once bult a college. t was an expresson a t once of ther dreams and ther convctons. T h e y dreamed of a place where ther youth mght master the dscplnes of sound learnng. They dreamed of men whose mnds mght be shaped by deas of honor and fath and dgnty. Ther dreams were forged nto convctons, ther convctons nto realty. The college they bult they gave the name of HOPE. The anchor was the symbol of ther trust and the words of Scrpture "Hope thou n God" the war-cry of ther contnung fath. For many decades men and women have streamed from the doors of the lttle college nto the thoroughfares of the world. They have ventured forth nto the f a r comers of the earth to express n ther own way what the college symbolzed and proclamed. Ths launchng of HOPE-CTORY s not merely a trbute to the college; t s a sgn and symbol of her very self. May ths shp, lke the college whose name she bears, sal forth, steer for the deep waters only, and return from her voyagng crowned wth honor, and vctory, and peace.
