1 ever, these followers of the rsen Chrst dd not say, <twell, we are sorry that we have been separated from the home church. We wll mss the brethren and we wsh them well. We wll vst them when the persecuton s over, or f we have a vacaton. We are sorry that t s necessary to move where we cannot attend church or tran our chldren n the fath." No ndeed; far dfferent was ther reacton. Acts 8: 4 says, "Now those.who were scattered went about preachng the word." They carred' ther fath wth them. And the sprt of ther Chrstan experence caught fre wherever they went, wth new groups of followers of Jesus sprngng up and new churches beng establshed. So t developed that ther persecuton and dsperson were responsble for the frst great outreach of the evangel message and the Chrstan cause. beleve ths experence apples to us today. We cannot be followers of Jesus only whle n the home town of chldhood, or as long as Mother and' Father are lvng. f we beleve n a unversal God, who s personally mmanent. everywhere, ths fath wll be shown n our own reacton to lfe everywhere, too. f Jesus Chrst has become a real lvng person for us, then our conduct wll be guded by Hs precepts, and' our lves wll be "hd n Hm" wherever we happen to resde, or whatever the customs or morals of the people n our present envronment. f we accept the Sabbath of the Bble as God's holy Sabbath day whle we are near other Sabbathkeepng Chrstans or locally afflated wth a Seventh Day Baptst Church, then God's Sabbath wll be real and holy for us even f we fnd t necessary to move to a new communty. And f we possess the knd of Chrstan experence the Early Church had,. we wll carry the message of our fath wth us. Let each of us thoughtfully re-examne our ndvdual fath, lest we be gulty of a lmted concept of God : lest we, too, be sufferng from a Jerusalem complex Let the words of saah 40 speak agan to our tme: Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord s the everlastng God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not fant or grow weary,. hs understandng s unsearchable. He gves power to the fant, and to hm who has no mght he ncreases strength. Even youths shall fant and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted but they who wat for the Lord sh;l renew ther strength, they shall mount up wth wngs lke eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not fant. <tas a loyal follower of Chrst must treat the Sabbath as He has shown me, by example and precept. When t ceases to be true that Chrst kept the Sabbath and taught Hs followers thus to do, can cease to keep t; not untl then." " am a Seventh Day Baptst because accept the.bble as the supreme and only rule of fath and practce n matters of relgon. Chrst rejected the "nferences' and "tradtons' whch Judasm had' added to the plan commandments of the Old Testament. He condemned those who ma~e " Th.e. law of none effect' through thetr tradlto~s. The ~ame authorty compels me to reject the nferences and tradtons w:hch have come to us through the perverson of Chrstanty by pagansm." "There s no nstance of the acceptance of unfounded tradton and llogcal efforts at argument more promnent than the assocaton of the observance of Sunday and the change of 'the Sabbath wth the. resurrecton of ~hrst. t s entrely unscrtptural. The Scrtptures never assocate Chrst's resurrecton wth the observance of any day, or wth the abrogaton of the Sabbath." "As we have already stated, the prmary purpose ~f the Seventh Day Baptsts s?ot to gan members unto themselves; t S r~ther to sp~ead truth patently and persstently, calltng the attenton of the church to ts dangers and seekng to nduce Sabbath reform upon the permanent bass of God's dvne law." "Two alternatves le before the church: to yeld all Sabbathsm and go down n the tde of holdaysm now ganng so rapdly; or to return, wthout compromse, to the frm foundaton of God's law. Here the Seventh Day Baptsts make ther stand. On ths ground they are wllng to awat the verdct of comng years." J.~ t ' 7'.. f l Lr.. c.. One who s nsensble to the voce of God n creaton may also hear amss the voce of God n revelaton. Nature speaks sometmes wth awesome sounds but more frequently wth a soft voce and wth a message more easly grasped wth the eye than wth the ear. God's specal revelaton, 'too, comes more clearly by way of the rustlng leaves of Hs Book than by a voce n the external organ" of hearng. Each year we stran to hear the soft tread of sprng as t marches up from the South n ts newly talored unform so galy decorated wth the campagn rbbons whch have come to be ts. dentfyng marks. One needs to travel a lttle to fully apprecate ths advance of the hosts of sprng. Trees, lke posted sentnels, have stood mute and expressonless these many months. The warmth of sprng rolls up and recedes lke waves of the sea. We thnk the season of flowers has come but t comes not wthout struggle. cy wnds blow once more and we wat mpatently for the change to come. Snce vernal beauty advances upon a gven localty stealthly or by waves we need to run ahead of t and come back to meet t n order to fully perceve ts forward strdes. Ths year we reluctantly left behnd the swellng buds of our backyard cherry tree to go a day's journey north to the Mnsters Conference. Upon our return a week later that tree was n full bloom and ts leaves were thrustng out to clothe the branches when the petals fell, as the manner of cherry trees s. Cool days came but they could not hold back the God-apponted transformat~n that had begun. Agan a weekend trp was made to New England n whch we outran the quet march of sprng. Returnng, we were once more struck wth what God had wrougt., Lookng back three weeks t becomes hard to remember that n such a. short space of tme the whole face of nature has changed. A velvet carpet s spread over the land. Countless famles on a Sunday afternoon are enjoyng the cty parks or countrysde beauty spots. The flowerng shrubs for whch our secton s famous have burst nto glory far more spectacular than an, l r atom bomb and, of course, more pleasant to contemplate. The thngs of man change not wth the seasons. Buldngs and offces retan ther same dull colors except as brghtened by the handwork of God brought n from feld and garden. n spte of all the joy we can get from the speech that "day unto day utters," accordng to the 9th Psalm, or the knowledge that "nght unto nght shows," there are joys that are greater. We do not worshp nature or lsten to the quet sounds of the march of sprng as f t were the most effectve way God could speak to us. We are remnded that our Creator speaks to us through 'Hs Word and, as we read n' Hebrews, He "hath n these last days spoken unto us by hs Son... by whom also he made the worlds." The Holy Sprt also speaks wth ntercedng and wth pleadng voce drectly to the hearts of those who are wllng to lsten. Far and wde that voce ranges to every church, to every msson feld. We rej oce to hear of spectacular, unexpected conversons of adults, of the tender yeldng of growng chldren, of the strong decsons of resolute youth. We beleve that there are far more notable transformatons ths year n the hearts of people than n the face of nature. We pray that ths yeldng to the love of God n Chrst Jesus may become more and more manfest - lke the marchng of sprng across the land. fll HU'@OVfl ~"~ecdk )Tfl WlhW lnj@l Oll $~ Dfll? t s nterestng and encouragng to read that the resstance of local authortes to the buldng of a Baptst church at Sant' Angelo, taly, was broken down when the Rev. 3 Not everythng that gets on the news ~ta?ds of tl).,e ~aton s '"Gospel truth" even f t appe"rs n such respected magaznes as Tme. Such s the case wth the enormous buld-up gven to Professor Oscar Cullman's lecture on the Coptc manuscrpt enttled "The Gospel of Thomas." nez Robb, n a natonally syndcated column, also went far beyond the scholars when she stated that the "world awats the publcaton of ancent document wth htherto unknown sayngs attrbuted to the Savor" and called the forthcomng. publcaton of t "one of the major events of modern tnes." Robert G. Bratcher, of Lousvlle, Ky., n the leadng artcle of a Baptst weekly Western Recorder (Aprl 30, 959), presents a scholarly answer to ths overdong of publcty over a relatvely unmportant, though ancent, lttle document. t s so easy for people to become excted over somethng lke ths and never check what the scholars actually say about t. The tendency may well be to dscount the nfntely greater treasure whch can be purchased for a few cents n any Bble store. Great arch~eologcal dscoveres are exctng f they shed even a tny bt of addtonal lght on the Scrptures. We would not for a moment make lght of ths partcular fnd of 945 whch s now beng publczed. t has ts place but t s not a new gospel by any stretch of the magnaton. n the artcle by Bratcher, whch we would commend to ou" readers, t s ponted out that ths so-called '"Gospel of Thomas" has prevously heen photostatcally reproduced and comm'ented on by theologcal journals. t appears to be the. product of the fertle magnaton of Gnostc wrters of the fourth 0' perhaps thrd 'centures. t contans just a few sayngs attrbuted to Jesus whch have not prevously been known to Engls4 readers, most of whch are, accordng to Dr. Bratcher, "qute far from the sprt and method of Jesus as manfest n the Synoptc Gospels." Cullman hmself warned n the lecture mentoned above that "whle ths document - and others lke t whch may yet turn up - may enrch and further our understandng of the canoncal Gospels, t contans no new revelaton of the teachngs of Jesus. The Gospels are and contnue to be our source for the knowledge of the lfe and teachng of Jesus." N@w [Q)@«:@D@@)M@$ The Ten Commandments, or Decalogue, delvered to Moses at Mount Sna s a code of laws whch has through these mllennums clearly lad before man hs responsblty to God and to hs fellow men. n every generaton there have been those who have known the all-embracng character of these laws and have sought to modfy them, enlarge them, rephrase them, paraphrase them, make lght of them, and annul them. There have been ndvdual and concerted efforts to evade and dsobey the dvne law. Sometmes one wonders f the attempts to wrte takeoffs on the Ten Commandments have not consumed more energy than attempts to obey them. Two church bulletns recently receved quoted so-called "Ten Lommandments Jor Parents." The thoughts n both cases were good but were absolutely dfferent. t would be nterestng to know how many such lsts are n prnt. The number would doubtless be legon. Notng the dssmlarty r.emnds us that they represent experences and backgrounds that are far less than unversal. t s to be observed also that these so-called commandments are seldom wrtten around any of the frst f our n the revealed lst - w hch have to do wth oblgatons to God. Why s t? Perhaps there s hestancy to make lght of any porton of such oblgaton by addng to or subtractng from the wrtten Word. But agan, countless words have been wrtten by less than careful thnkers to the effect that the Fourth Commandm, ent s no longer God's wll for man. So we leave the m,atter where we pcked t up, "God spoke all these words sayng,..." The "ten commandments" men have wrtten do not compare wth those of the. Bble. Probably they were never meant to. r?9~3't"~ ~~~ " rro [Q)@')f orru vroe $ cllc ~o Recently a professor n our county ordered a hgh school Junor to leave the gymnasum due to bad conduct. THE SABBATH RECORDER The last secton of a paper presented to the fvl nsters Conference V~~ $(ff'&-~ Hessey, n the Bampton lectures of 860, makes clear the opnon of the Contnental Reformers and ther lack of dvne authorty for Sunday observance. He says: Wth one blow as t were, and wth one con' sent, the Contnental Reformers rej ected the Legal or Jewsh ttle whch had been set up for t; the more Jewsh ceremones and restrctons by whch, n theory at least, t had been encum' bered; the army of holy, days of oblgaton by whch t had been surrounded. But they dd more. They left standng no sancton for the day tself whch could commend tself power' fully to men s conscences. They dd not per' ceve that, through the Apostles, t was of the Lord"s foundng. They swept away together wth the upper-works whch were Dot the Lord's the underworks whch were the Lord's. And when they'\.dscovered that men, that human nature, n {act, could not do wthout t, they adopted the day, ndeed, but wth ths reser' vaton expressed or mpled: ~~The Lord's Day s to be placed n the category of ordnances whch, beng matters of ndfferen~ any partcular or natonal church hath authorty to ordan, change or abolsh; n By Kenneth E. Smth or, whch was worse stll, they made t a purely cvl nsttu' ton, dependent f not for ts orgn, at least for ts contnuance. on the secular power. Hessey seems to agree wth Rchard Baxter (The Dvne Appontment page 27) who says n a most patronzng tone of Calvn and Beza: "You must remember that they came newly out of Popery" and, not observng the dfference between Sunday and Papst's ceremones, they brought forth "too undstngushng and naccurate a reformaton." Ths brngs us to merry old England and a vew of the Sabbath whch s assocated wth the Purtan movement. Coleman, wrtng n 852, says, "The dvne authorty of the Sabbath nether was recognzed by the ancent fathers; nor by Luther or Calvn; nor by the early Reformers. t was reserved for the Purtans, to ther mmortal honor, frst to expound and enforce the law of the Chrstan Sabbath, MAY 8, 959 based on the authorty of God's \'( 0 rd. They better read the la,v of the Lord our God on ths subject..." Then he b(: comes qute eloqucnt as he says, "Th<.: nfluence of the sun n th<.: hc:,\'c:ns s no more clear or genal than s tlllt of th<.: Chrstan Sabbath upon the who<.: En.~ sh race \vhercycr found. (Ancent Chrstanty Exemplfcd n the Lf <: of the Prmtve Chrstans, Phl. S 52.) Because of poltcal ntrgue and hgh-handed regulatons, the Church of,england had lost much support, a fact whch the Purtans used' to full advantage. Bound's book, wth ts legalstc restrctons on Sunday (O~$~o ance, seemed an attack on both the Church and the Government whch had recently publshed' opnons regardng Sunday conduct. The poston taken by the state church was much lke that of Luther and Calvn, and Sunday was not to be regarded n a Sabbatcal sense. An earler edton of Bound's book was' suppressed by Archbshop Whtgft n 599 and that was the spark whch touched off ts enormous popularty.we are told that wthn a few years'of the publcaton date, the Englsh observance of Sunday underwent consderable change. 8 ~o {f cel}ucwrr«:}u By Marjor,e J. Burdck A beautful Sabbath, Aprl, 959, s dra"\vng to a close. The members and frends of the Mlton Seventh Day Baptst Church have had a heart-warmng experence. Twenty-fve years ago our beautful church buldng was dedcated. Today we have had a re-dedcaton servce. The mornng servce followed the pattern of the servce held Aprl 4, 934. Mss Elzabeth Daland played peces used by Mrs. Kathryn Rogers, who was organst at that tme. The Choral Call to Prayer, "Seek Ye the Lord," was one wrtten by Mrs. Rogers. Two anthems sung by the chor were us-ed twenty-fve years ago:."buld Thee More Stately Mansons," and "How Lovely s Thy Dw,ellng Place.." Kenneth Babcock sang, "How Lovely Are Thl~ $ Jb>'Q)( ]~hl [Q)lYl7'Dl'~ ~hle l%e*@7'tl l~o@f) (Contnued from page 8) the Sabbath must needs be stll upon the seventh day as t has always been." t s smply mpossble to reconcle these statements, whch are repeated frequently, wth the frst paragraph quoted. The church has not been gven authorty to change the day, he ass erts, but the apostles dd' change the day, and apparently wth Dr. ;Bound's blessng. Here, then, s a lengthy work (479 pages) whch holds that the Sabbath must never be changed or abrogated, but bures n a mysterous para-. graph, the admsson that t has been changed from the very seventh day to ths very seventh day. n every other respect the author shows hmself to be a learned' scholar and a lucd wrter, hence one can only conclude that he got nto dffculty by hs consstency wth the facts and got out of dffculty by a momentary lapse nto obscurantsm. All of ths mght be amusng but for the fast that Bound set the pattern for a naton and a culture n regard to a day of rest. Unlke the reformers of Germany, Swtzerland and France, he nssted upon Sabbath ~bservance for Sunday. The use of Thy Dwellngs," whch he sang at the orgnal servce. n the pews, the new hymnals had been replaced by the old, and the sa'me hymns and responsve readng were used. Pastor Randolph based hs sermon, "The House of God," on the Scrpture, Psalm 73. As the Psalmst of old, we need a sanctuary to whch we can go n our wearness, that we may gan an understandng of the m.eanng of lfe and our relatonshp to t. He spoke of the many uses of ths sanctuary through the years, for s-ervces of worshp, church group meetngs, weddngs, funerals, and for fellowshp wth other groups. Through all of these, the supreme queston s, "What has happened to the people who have been n these groups? Has Chrst entered ther hearts and buded there a temple - a buldng from God, eternal n the heavens?" the term Sabbath for Sunday s our hertage from Ncolas Bound and the Purtan movement. Perhaps these voces from the past help to explan the varety of opnon regard' ng the Sabbath whch s evdent n the Unted States. As a meltng pot of natons we are aware of three major opnons on ths ssue:. The Englsh nfluence, partcularly the free-church, comng by way of Colonal New England has been a transference of sanctty and authorty from Sabbath to Sunday. Ths group s most lkely to call Sunday the Sabbath and s most partcular about ts observance. 2. The European Protestants clam that all days are sacred and are qute ndfferent about the observance of Sunday. 3. The Roman Catholc Church element has found authorty for Sunday observance n ther doctrne of the Church. Thus, the Catholc agrees wth the Purtan that t~e Sabbath s transferred', but the Catholc has the easer poston to mantan snce he can demonstrate that the Church made the transferal. The Purtan, clamng Bblcal authorty, has nothng more substantal than Dr. Bound's mysterous paragra ph. (End.). : ;, :\ : : : As the congregaton read together ther affrmaton of re-dedcaton, patterned after the orgnal act of worshp, there was a sncere feelng wth the Psalmst, "t s good for me to draw near to God" n our beautful sanctuary. The afternoon servce followed the Meal of Sharng. Professor L. H. Strnger drected a group of some twenty-fve men n the sngng of such favortes as "Take Tme To Be Holy" and "Rock of Ages." Professor D. N. ngls led devotonals, readng from the large Bble gven for use at the tme of the dedcaton. t rested on a small table used as a pulpt by the frst pastor of ths church, the Rev. Stllman Coon. Professor W. D. Burdck, presdent of the church at the tme of the dedcaton, pad trbute to the leadershp and untrng work of tge late Dean J. N. Daland, who was presdent through the tryng tmes and dffcult days of the depresson when the buldng was beng erected. The loss of the former church buldng by fre came when the church was wthout a pastor, but the Rev. and Mrs. Carroll Hll were called and took up the pastorate about the tme the work was started on the excavaton. Hstorcal thoughts on "Buldng a Church" were gven by Mr. Hll who was nvted back to Mlton for the occason. He revewed the work of a labor of love n those years when jobs were few and money was scarce. The cost of the buldng was $29,000, but ths does not reveal the vast number of hours of labor for whch no money was pad. He mentoned gfts of memoral wndows, the work of women n furnshng and equppng the ktchen, the d-:=sgn ~nd constructon, and many other nterestng thngs, nterspersed wth anecdotes that often brgught a smle or chuckle as they were recalled by many n the audence. Vctor Hurley and Mrs. Gladys Drake, representng the Buldng Commttee of 934, told of ther experences and pad trbute to some who served and helped so much n ths work. Attorney Grant Davs, Dr. George Post, and Dr. H. L. Hulett were mentoned. Mrs. Drake spoke of the work of the three women's organ- zatons of that t nc J.n J the: r (orn bn e:d efforts.
