2 choose a project and participate in it on any day; choosing a project and making a difference in your community is the goal. Consider organizing a day of service any day! SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 is GOD S WORK, OUR HANDS SUNDAY! YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! God s Work, Our Hands Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, is an opportunity to celebrate together who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The theme God s work, Our Hands reminds us that we are church together for the sake of the world. Our lives have been changed by our relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and it s that encounter with Jesus that frees us to make a difference. -ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton Whether it s volunteering at a homeless shelter or food pantry, cleaning up a public park, writing letters to military personnel serving overseas, or supporting those congregations who fight for peace and justice in their communities every day, we are a church that boldly does God s work of restoring and reconciling communities. To help increase the impact of the service, ELCA members will be participating in a variety of local projects on September 7th. You may, however, Listen to the needs of your local community Research worldwide needs Learn about a subject and share your new awareness with others Identify opportunities to serve Invite people to serve with you Partner with local organizations and congregations to make a difference, near or far Make a donation to a new cause and encourage others to do the same To help you find a new ministry or cause in which to serve, consider the following: 1. Six Ways to Help at the Border - helping refugee children find proper housing. 2. Clark s House Inc. - helping homeless veterans. 3. Gaza Humanitarian Assistance - sharing hope and resources with people in a war zone. 4. Run for Freedom - Worship Service at First Baptist Church of Clermont September 7, 2014, 6:30pm; find out about Human Trafficking and how you can help prevent it! 5. Lutherans Help Fight Ebola in West Africa - supporting those fighting this deadly disease. Continued on Page 5 column 1 2

3 Worship and Music Team- Special Presentation Sundays: August 17 and August 24 after both services Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Congregation Mission Statement: Make Known God s Grace Our History Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church established a Worship and Music Committee in 2011 to review and improve our worship experience. One of our primary goals was to update and expand our worship styles and music. Since that time we have made many improvements, including: 1. Changing to a more spirited traditional service style using a liturgy entitled, Feast and Celebration, at our 10:15 service on Sundays. 2. Identifying three different worship styles: Informal worship on Wednesdays, Relaxed Traditional at (8:00 am), and Spirited Traditional at (10:15 am) on Sundays. 3. Introducing Themed Services: Recent examples include, Celebration of Freedom on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, a VBS Family service on Sunday, July 27, 2014, and I Want My Life to Make a Difference on Wednesday, August 6, Making improvements to worship and the worship space, which includes: providing a variety of different seating arrangements, a simplified and more pleasing chancel, relocation of choir seating, the pulpit, and the organ, the addition of video announcements in the fellowship area, improvements in welcoming and greeting members and visitors, the partitioning of worship and fellowship areas, updating our lighting in the chancel area, applying light filtering film to the large window in the fellowship area to enhance our Power Point projections, and a more concise, easyto-follow, larger bulletin. 5. Introducing a more contemporary worship service in 2013 that included guitar and drums. This took place on a Wednesday evening service in August 2013 with the same service on a Sunday in September Using more dramas, children s talks, and other alternative forms of teaching the Gospel. Our Research Attendance at our church has remained virtually the same over the past several years. Most of our new members come from a Lutheran tradition. Less than 2% of the residents in Lake County are Lutheran. 3

4 continued from Page 3 In order to discover the demographics of the Clermont area, the community in which Shepherd of the Hills is called to serve, and to find out how we might reach more members of our community, we recently completed a demographic study called Mission Insite. The study revealed that a large group of families in the 30 to 50 age group are missing from our church membership, as well as certain other groups. These groups primarily respond to themed services and more contemporary styles of music and worship, rather than the traditional services we now offer. In discussing days and times with our current young families, we discovered that the later service on Sunday seems to be more conducive to their participation. A Plan If we are to reach out to people in our community, we need to reach people where they are rather than inviting them to be like us. In order to accomplish this, we believe we need to add a more contemporary style of worship along with themed services to our existing styles of worship. The Worship and Music Team believes that it is now time to add an additional worship style which we are presently calling Worship and Praise. This worship will include newer present-day music, ethnically diverse music styles, more videos, contemporary drama, piano, guitars, drums, and other instruments. This worship style may be somewhat different from the Worship and Praise or Contemporary styles you may have experienced at other churches. Our services will still follow the foundational format of Lutheran worship: Gathering, Word, Meal, and Sending. We will be testing this worship style for the next six months beginning on September 7, On this date, both Sunday services will feature worship and praise with the ELCA theme God s Work, Our Hands so that the entire worship community experiences this style of worship. After September 7th, we will offer a Worship and Praise service on the first Sunday of each month at our 10:15 service from October 2014 through February Traditional worship will still be available on these dates at the regularly scheduled 8:00 am service. During this period we will be advertising our worship services in local newspapers, Facebook, on our website, and by other means. An Invitation We are asking your help in introducing this new worship opportunity to your friends and neighbors. Invite them to worship. At the end of the trial period in February, we will ask for your help in determining how we should proceed. We will ask questions like: should we continue this style of service or change the day, time or the format. 4

5 continued from Page 4 This project is sponsored by the Worship and Music Team with the full support of the Church Council. Pastor Nancy will participate in worship and add support to the process. We thank Sara Holton and Joe Foryan for sharing their musical talents that help make this worship experience possible. Working Together As Team Members, we are open to your ideas during this trial period. Feel free to give any member of the Worship and Music Team your comments. The current members are: Ruth Monzillo, Pam Brosonski, Sara Holton, Larry Holihan and Pastor Nancy. As always, we appreciate your support and participation as we move forward in faith. Change is never easy, but it is necessary at times to help us Make Known God s Grace in our community and beyond! Continued from Page 2 6.
