INTRODUCING...CHRIS COPELAND An ordained Baptist minister who has worked as a pastor, spiritual director, and denominational leader, Christopher Copeland serves as the spiritual and creative director of Illuminating Paths, a practice of accompanying individuals, groups, and communities on their spiritual journeys. Chris also serves as the Minister for Leadership Formation on the leadership team of the Alliance of Baptists, a movement of progressive Christians seeking to respond to the continuing call of God in a rapidly changing world. A member of Binkley Baptist Church since 2009, Chris is providing transition support as one of the Interim Ministers for Christian Education. In this capacity, he will offer support to teachers and parents, begin planning next year s all church retreat, help the Board of Christian Education to discern how to best shape educational ministry in the future, and provide some leadership in worship. INTRODUCING...JOHN BURTON-CRUTCHFIELD A love of learning and delight in being a student led John Burton- Crutchfield to collect not one, not two, but three master degrees in his life adventures. Degree No. 1, a Master of Divinity, brought among other things Wanda into his life. Degree No. 2, a Master of Arts in Christian Education, cemented his thoughts that Christian Education is a reflection of and an opportunity for an engaged congregation to nurture faith formation for all ages. Degree No. 3, a Master of Library and Information Studies, provided a refuge from church and a chance to teach people how to access resources and find answers to sticky life questions. He has served congregations, agencies, and libraries in North Carolina and Virginia. John s job at Binkley is to offer program support as one of the Interim Ministers of Christian Education. His role involves working with staff, the Board of Christian Education, and appropriate committees to help coordinate the launch of the church year; facilitate the nursery, children s programming, and Wednesday evening activities; and participate regularly in worship leadership. John also will continue his work as caregiver and teacher of his two-year-old son, Owen.

4 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL FALL 2010 AT BINKLEY BAPTIST CHURCH The Church, the Bible, and Social Justice: A Look at the Hebrew Prophets and Binkley Church for the 21 st Century Taught by Michael and Maria Palmer and Charles Coble Lounge Binkley Baptist Church was founded as a prophetic voice in the middle of the Civil Rights struggle. What does it mean to be a prophetic voice today? How can we energize our community, experience the awe of God's presence, and honestly deal with the pain of injustice in our broader community? Together we will read Walter Brueggeman's book, The Prophetic Imagination. We will look at the history of our church and discuss the lives of Christian leaders like Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Luther King, Jr., who saw their Christian faith as inseparable from the call of justice. We will examine the biblical prophets as critics of the accepted religious and political voices of their time. Fundamentalist use of scripture has made many progressive Christians reluctant to talk about the Bible. We will address this issue squarely and propose a different way of reading that liberates scripture from conservative politics and gives it a welcomed place in our justice-centered community. Heroines of Faith, Courage, and Compassion Taught by Collins Kilburn Sunroom The focus will be on fascinating and inspiring women, moral and spiritual giants of the female gender edifying examples of faith, courage, and compassion. The contemplation of such figures can provide encouragement and enrichment for men and women. Some of these heroines are not as famous as their male counterparts whom we have studied in recent years. They include: - The Grimke sisters From a slaveholding family in South Carolina, they became pioneers in antislavery and women's rights in the 1830's. - Jane Adams She was America's best known and most widely hailed female public figure in the 1930's for groundbreaking work in social welfare and peacemaking. - Frances Perkins She became the first woman cabinet member as FDR's secretary of labor and was "the woman behind the New Deal." - Pauli Murray Denied admission to UNC law school because of her race and Harvard because of her gender, she became a lawyer, educator, writer, poet, activist, and the first African American woman ordained a priest of the Episcopal Church. - Fannie Lou Hamer From sharecropping in the cotton fields of Mississippi, she became a key civil rights leader known for electrifying oratory, raw courage, and religious zeal. - Sallie McFague She is an eminent contemporary eco-feminist theologian. Coffee and Conversation Facilitated by Marilyn Metcalf Room 17 What does it mean to know and be known? What would it take to know and be known by others? Just as Parker Palmer challenged people of faith to wonder about these questions, this class asks participants to risk creating relationships based on knowing and being known. Using poetry, lectionary scriptures, artwork, stories from NPR, or the day-to-day challenges of living, participants in the class engage one another while sharing a cup of coffee. The class is open to anyone who wants to dip their toe in the waters of connection. Our reputation is raucous, but we promise not to bite too hard! The class shares leadership among its members. YOUTH GROUP ACTIVITES RESUME!! Calling all 6 th 12 th graders join us in the Fellowship Hall on September 12 with your entire family for our annual Youth Kick-off night. We will gather at 6:00 pm for supper and an overview of the coming semester. WEDNESDAY MORNING CENTERING PRAYER RESUMES SEPTEMBER 15 "Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship." (Thomas Keating) Beginning on September 15 we will gather in the Chapel each Wednesday from 9-9:45 am for Centering Prayer. We begin with a reading from Scripture or other devotional material, followed by minutes of silence. The final 15 minutes is a time for prayer, both spoken and silent, when participants bring their expressions of thanksgiving and concern before God. It includes a reading of the names of Binkley members on the prayer list, and concludes with a unison praying of the Lord's Prayer. For more information, contact Nancy Cheek, , cheekn@earthlink.net, or Velma Ferrell, , velmamferrell@nc.rr.com.
