1 The Crier St.Philip s UCC November, 2018 St. Philip s Mission Statement St. Philip s United Church of Christ is a loving Christian community believing in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to share God s love with all people. Vision Statement We are called to the body of Jesus Christ with: Minds to study God s word, Mouths to proclaim the Gospel, Eyes to see the needs of others, Arms to welcome all, Hearts big enough to share God s love with all God s children. God is Still Speaking

2 ! For many people resisting the urge to be isolated get harder this time of year as fewer minutes of daylight occur each day and average temperatures decrease. It s more trouble to leave home and it may seem easier to say no to the invitations of friends and church to stay engaged and connected. While it s healthy to honor our individual social rhythms - it s also important to remember how it feels when the lack of face to face interaction gets too infrequent. Let s take the advice given by Paul in his letter to the Christians in Colossae:... let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. You might also consider joining the Choir, Women s Fellowship, 4F Club, Lunch Bunch, volunteering in an outreach ministry, making phone calls to friends who might be lonely or any number of similar activities. If you are feeling a need for a new group that doesn t exist yet - call me and let me help you make it happen. It sure is a joy to be a part of St. Philip s United Church of Christ. 4 Schnucks Grocery Card These cards are not bought like the others we use... You get this one free from the Service counter at a store or ask the people selling cards some Sunday...On the card are the directions you use to register it then keep the registered card(s) with you when you shop there. You get one wallet sized card and one key chain sized card. Registration can all be done with a toll free call. A small sheet of paper that has all the information you will need about the church to register it is also available with your new cards picked up at church. Once it's registered you just show it to the cashier BEFORE they start to ring you out...the purchase amount with their contribution to us is automatically added to our monthly check from them...some of you only purchase from Schnucks part of the time but would be surprised to see how these infrequent visits add up IF YOU BUY AT SCHNUCKS BE SURE TO HAVE A CARD TO USE..."The Sales Crew" Friendly Reminder. I need manpower to help set up the tables here at the church starting at 1 on Friday, November 2nd in the Multi-Purpose Room. Thank You Very Much! Carole Armistead WOMEN S FELLOWSHIP Will meet November 20 at 10:00am at the church. Caps, mittens and candy Christmas bags and boxing for 50 boys and girls for the St. Nicholas Party at the Every Child s Hope (Evangelical Childrens Home) on St. Charles Rock Rd. Any questions call Virginia at or Request for Costume Jewelry & Accessory Scarves. I am a volunteer at Gateway Homeless Shelter, the largest 24 hour shelter in the metro area. We are currently planning our seventh annual fashion show called "Career Dressing on a Dime". The women will model outfits appropriate for interviews and work settings. The idea is that you can dress well on a budget, and all clothing items, shoes and jewelry comes from resale shops, and rummage sales. I have assembled a good supply of clothing and shoes, but need more costume jewelry and scarves (the kind worn for accents, not the warm winter kind). I would like to have these items before November 16. Your unused items will help Gateway women look and feel good! Barbara Barnes

5 Outreach Ministry News: Our Advent project will again benefit St. John's Community service Ministry. As we have done in the past, we will collect scarves, mittens, gloves and hats to hang on the small tree in the gathering area. Because of space problems, there will not be a "Cookies with Santa" party this year. So, instead of the toys we have collected in the past, Johnniest has asked that we participate in the "adopt a family" program. We will collect items for four small families (3-4 people). Each family will get a box of food for a Christmas Dinner, and one gift for each family member ($25 or less). There will be ornaments on the tree, with the gift requests and food items listed. We ask that St. Philip s members take ornaments off the tree to indicate which items they would like to buy, and then put the food items and gifts in the box under the tree with the adopted family's name on it. Several members, or a ministry group can go together to buy the $25 gifts. We will collect food items and gifts from November 25 through December 16, wrap gifts and assemble the boxes after church on December 16, and take them to St. John's Community Service Ministry on December 17. Thanks for your generosity! Outreach Ministry Book club News: To Kill a Mockingbird will be discussed after church on November 4. Consider joining us for discussion and light pot luck lunch, even if you have not read the book! Our next selection is God Help the Child by Toni Morrison. This best seller is described as a provocative novel about the ways that secrets from the past effect our current lives. Our December meeting will be on a Sunday early in the month. THANK YOU! We want to thank all of our church friends for generously supporting us in our Walk to End Alzheimer's. Our family brought in $2, for the Alzheimer's Association when we walked on September 29, It was a gorgeous day for the walk and there was truly a spirit of community when hundreds of walkers came together, all of them touched in some way by Alzheimer's. Thank you all for your yearly support. We gratefully appreciate all of your donations and hope that soon this disease will cease to exist. Linda and Bob Kammerer

Wednesdays 4:30pm-6:30pm Our first session began September 19 and will end with an exciting (No LOGOS 10/10, 10/31 & 11/21) School-aged children are invited to recreation time, bible stories & craft, Music & Drama time, and a family dinner. These four parts of LOGOS are key to growing in our faith and in our relationship with one another. Parents are invited to partake in any aspect especially the family dinner (that s one less night of cooking!). Other members of the community, neighbors and friends are always welcome!
