1 Central Church of the Brethren Called to believe Connected in love Compelled to serve 416 Church Ave SW Sunday School 9:45 a.m. Roanoke, VA Worship 11:00 a.m September 30, 2018 Ringing of the Chimes ^Gathering Song Let This Be A Place insert Welcome, Announcements & Joys/Concerns followed by time of silent prayer Prelude ^Responsive Call to Worship One Voice: If it had not been for God, who was on our side, we would have fallen prey to those who want to harm us; we would have been swept away by sadness and fear. Gathered Voices: Blessed be the Lord, our protector! One Voice: God has broken the snare that took away our freedom. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Gathered Voices: Blessed be God s holy name! ^Hymn Brethren, we have met to worship # 8 ^Opening Prayer Children s Message Bob Iseminger Invitation to Tithes and Offerings Offertory Music ^Offering Response Praise God from whom # 118 ^Offering Prayer

2 Pastoral Prayer followed by prayer in Unison God of wonder, you surround us with signs of your glory and surprise us with your presence, yet we often miss the marvels you place before us. Forgive our dullness and make us alert to the ways you make yourself known, that we might be witnesses to your good news and proclaim your extravagant love; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen Anthem Can t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus Andrea Crouch Melissa Carr, soloist Scripture Reading Mark 9:38-50 (p. 45 in the pew Bibles) Sermon To build up not to tear down ^Closing Hymn Help us to help each other # 362 ^Benediction ^Postlude ^ Invitation to stand as you are able. Thoughts to consider: Numbers 11:24 29 and Mark 9:38 41 are both concerned with expressions of divine power that occur outside the bounds of formal leadership and authority. Where have you experienced God s mighty or gracious action in the church and in the world? What does it mean for the church to pray or act in the name of Jesus Christ? How do you account for gifts of the Spirit that seem to spill out beyond the church s control? Scriptures for the week: Esther 7:1 6, 9 10; 9:20 22; Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, 24-29; James 5:13 20; Psalm 124 & Mark 9:38 50

3 Welcome to Central Church of the Brethren. We are glad that you are here on this day that the Lord has made.
