The Richards Group, a Texas based ad agency, had been charged with using billboards instead of TV or radio to propel Chick-fil-A to success in a crowded marketplace. The Chick-fil-A cow was born. Li8le did Chick-fil-A, or the anyone at the Richards Group know they were just unwi:ng pawns in God s plan- His plan to get my proverbial goat. Yes, all of this was set in moon for my very own heavenly-inspired punch line. In the summer of 2017, I sat in my truck, literally holding up traffic, paralyzed at the site of the Chick-fil-A cow. He was speaking to me. I just didn t know whether to laugh or cry. In June of 2017 a?er a year of suffering, searching, and a plethora of medical tests and dead ends, I was diagnosed with a rare allergy. Alpha-Gal is caused from the bite of a lonestar ck. This specific ck had bi8en a non-primate mammal, then bit me, and transferred a microscopic carbohydrate called Galctose-Alpha 1,3 Galctose (say that five mes fast). Essen- ally, I d been infected by the blood of another mammal from the only ck in town known to transfer the galactose. Now - and possibly forever - I am allergic to meat. Some people like me, are sensive to praccally anything from a mammal. Dairy. Fat. Meat. Bacon. Bu8er. Cheese. Nothing with gelan. All can trigger a severe food allergy. It s a game changer. Everything changes when you must avoid mammalian animal products - the food you eat, the medicines you take, the toothpaste you use, and cosmecs you might wear. Your diet centers around fish and poultry. You spend a LOT more me reading ingredient labels. Talking about cks seems like your new past me. Dinnerme can be less enjoyable - more concern about the food and survival than enjoying the meal and company. Slowly I began to mourn the real loss. It s not avoiding meat or losing your favorite foods, It s losing freedom and the power to choose for myself. A ck just decided that for me...forever. When I sat in traffic in front of that billboard I was in a melancholy state. Contemplang, just how would I survive the rest of my life with this? And now this giganc dairy cow, bigger than life, sat right in front of me and looked me in the eye. Speaking right to me it said, Dave, just Eat Mor Chikin. The irony was so poignant I could taste it. A horn behind me blew as I sat there so long in a staring contest with this sarcasc dairy cow. Death grip on the wheel Eyes locked Tears welling up I could ve punched that life-sized bovine mannequin right in the nose. That really was a laugh or cry moment for me. It all came together right there. If I saw this as an afflicon, I would feel distressed the rest of my life. If I viewed it as a challenge, then it would give me something to overcome. It is truly up to me. That s a freedom I sll have. I really do think God has a sense of humor. I think it s his way of helping us to carry our cross. In a way to me, the Chick-Fil-A slogan had been developed just to point me in a be8er direcon and snap me out of it. I smile when I see those ads now. Living with severe food allergies is no laughing ma8er. But I think living and laughing is far be8er than suffering. Even if it s your own life that s the punch line. - David Ausn

St. Francis office. The training will be for any students in grades 6-8 wishing to serve in our ministry. 9 Preschool & Child Care has been providing quality child care and educa3on since The programs are designed to s3mulate the physical, social, emo3onal, and intellectual developmental needs of each individual child. 3, 4, & 5 Year Old Preschool Full & Part-'me Child Care Before & A,er School Care Summer Care for Ages 3-12 All preschool-age children enrolled in the daycare adend preschool classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. AEer school care is available for children who adend St. John Paul II Elementary, Silver Creek Elementary, and Silver Creek Primary. 11 Sacraments & Sacramental Preparation Baptisms: Typically celebrated at weekend Masses. A Baptism Preparation Session is required for parents. The next session is December 2, 2018 immediately following the 11:15 Mass at the St. Paul Chapel. Confessions: Available Friday mornings at 11:15am at the St. Joe Hill Chapel and Saturdays at 4:15pm at the St. Paul Chapel. You may also contact Fr. Tom at to schedule an appointment. Marriage: Please contact Fr. Tom at at least six months prior to planned wedding date. The marriage preparation process will be explained at that time.
