Have you ever had to prune a tree or bush? Did this pruning give the tree new life or did you kill it? What lesson did you learn from this pruning? 2. In your reading of this Gospel do you see yourself as a vine producing fruit or a vine headed to the brush heap? What ways can you change to produce fruit in your spiritual life? 3. Do the words of Jesus seem harsh to you or are they words of guidance and help you to become a be er person? Share your view and your reasoning. Sellersburg/Speed Food Pantry Needs: Toilet Paper First Friday Faith Fill Up May 4th at 6:55am St. Paul Chapel Stop by for a short prayer and breakfast on the first Friday of each month in devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Can t stay for breakfast? To go op ons will be available. All ages welcome! I am the vine, you are the branches Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire to be burned. When I read this part of this week s Gospel all I can picture is my huge pecan tree in my back yard. This tree was tall when I moved into my house and 44 years later it is VERY tall. It is showing its age just like me, but it con nues to weather the storm. Of course it drops branches all year long. Each me the yard is mowed we have to gather all the branches that have fallen off the tree on to the grass. I have to bribe my grandchildren to gather them up and put them on the brush pile. They hate this task but I promise them a nice wiener roast in the fall of the year. It is hard for them to imagine this wonderful roaring fire in July or August as they sweat gathering those branches. The squirrels love this tree. It provides them with a bounty of so shelled pecans that are too wormy for me to use and a wonderful place to build their nests. In the late summer the squirrels leap from the branches of the tree and scamper across my roof and on to the awnings as they head out to bury their bounty. And what does this old pecan tree have to do with the Gospel you may ask. I see in that old tree what Jesus was telling us in this Gospel. The word of God was planted in us and we were commissioned to go forth and be frui ul, producing much fruit. My grand old pecan tree does not produce good fruit for me but feeds the squirrels boun fully. The branches fall and li er my yard but provide a warm fire for my family s entertainment. Someday I will have to sadly cut down my tree, but the mes I have enjoyed it will remain with me and my family for many years. God s word has fed me most of my life. I have passed that word on to my daughter and grandchildren. Those children will carry on the legacy planted in them by God s word as they grow here at St. John Paul II parish. This faith I love so much has grown fruit for three genera ons, and I hope for many more genera ons to come. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. God s Blessing to you all. Dolores Snyder First Saturday Devo on to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Saturday, May 5, :00am Rosary, Litany, and Devo ons 8:30am Mass Confessions will also be available. 10 Confirma on is one of three Sacraments of Ini a on in the Catholic Church. Typically this sacrament is celebrated when the bap zed person is older and has the knowledge to make the decision that they want to con nue to grow as a disciple in the Catholic Church. St. John Paul II Parish offers this opportunity to those who have completed 8th grade and throughout high school. Dawn Schepers: dschepers@stjohnpaulparish.org Kris na Seipel: kseipel@stjohnpaulparish.org Prompted by Archbishop Thompson's changes to the celebra on of the Sacrament of Confirma on and to meet the needs of our parish youth, SJPII has updated our parish Confirma on Prep program. We are launching the new program this summer. If you are interested in celebra ng this sacrament, please let Dawn Schepers or Kris na Seipel know and she will contact you when registra on starts. To view the prepara on criteria, visit our parish website: stjohnpaulparish.org/confirma on prep Confirma on deepens our bap smal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world.... We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service. ~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults Looking for a friendly group in our parish to share and grow with? Did you know we have more than 5 Small Faith Groups that meet on a regular basis to share ideas, Bible lessons and discussions? These groups meet in homes, mee ng rooms, coffee shops and restaurants.
