How did that turn out? 2. Why do you think Jesus only took some of the apostles and the child s parents into the house with Him? Why did people ridicule Jesus when he said she was only sleeping? Why did He ask that no one be told of this healing? 3. Do you see areas in your life, family, our church that need a healing from Jesus? We welcome our new Director of Liturgy and Music this week - Mr. Jesse Schuler. He can be reached at the St. Joe Hill Office, or at jschuler@stjohnpaulparish.org Welcome, Jesse! Dear Friends, I had a bullen le+er already wri+en for this week, but since the one I had wri+en can be used any month, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a li+le bit about the clergy convocaon I a+ended a week ago at St. Meinrad. Every other year, the priests of the archdiocese gather together for four days of fellowship, prayer, and spiritual growth. Our speaker this year was a young bishop (49 years old and has been a bishop since 2013) named Andrew Cozzens. He is the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Minneapolis St. Paul. His theme for the week was a reminder to us priests that we always need to be working on our relaonship with Jesus Christ. We always need to be striving for holiness. As we went through the week I kept thinking that his message, while certainly important to us priests because of our unique vocaon, is important to anyone who takes their discipleship walk seriously. His first talk focused on the words of Jesus found in John 15:1 11 in which Jesus talks about being the vine and us the branches. He then implores us to abide in him. That word abide is somemes translated remain. How is it that we are to remain in Jesus? He gave us what he calls the RIM method. Our Chrisan identy flows from our Relaonship (as disciples). Our relaonships help form our Identy (Christ followers). And our Identy forms our Mission (make disciples). In this talk he menoned that in Luke s Gospel aber Peter denies Jesus, Luke writes that Jesus looked at him intently causing Peter to go out and weep bi+erly. It was a reminder to us that we will at mes fail, but Jesus never gives up on us. ABer he said this, I was reminded of a me shortly aber he was elected pope when a reporter asked Pope Francis, Who is Jorge Bergoglio? (Pope Francis name before he was elected pope). He thought for a moment and then he said, I am a sinner upon whom the Lord has cast his gaze. I didn t really understand that much unl I put these two events together. Peter certainly wasn t worthy of the Lord s call. He definitely betrayed his trust. But Jesus sll called him he sll looked at him intently. And I believe that it was in that intent look where Peter was able to right his wrong. My friends, the same is true for us. God has cast his gaze on each one of us, not because of our saintliness or holiness, but because he knows that if we remain in him, we can do everything he is calling us to do. It is true for me as a priest. It is true for you as a disciple. In the second talk, Bishop Cozzens spoke about how we need acve purificaon or growth. How do we do that? He gave us a fourstep process. 1) Acknowledge the struggle What is tearing at your heart?; 2) Relate bring that struggle into your relaonship with God (pray about it); 3) Receive God s answer once again listening to God in prayer gives us God s direcon for our lives; and 4) Respond to God. He cauons us that this only works through prayer and selfknowledge. In his final talk, Bishop Cozzens made an appeal to be acve in our priestly fraternity. Show up at those things where brother priests are gathered. I think it is easy to apply that to our parish as well. It is an invitaon to you to try to be a part of this Chrisan community. Not just in a+ending Sunday Mass, but also parcipang in the other acvies of our parish, especially the spiritual ones. Jesus never sent out disciples alone. He wants us to be together. Sorry this le+er is a li+le long, but Bishop Cozzens message was too good not to share. In Christ s Love, Fr. Tom Clegg Pastor
