Many msques, temples, palaces and ther structures were als built in the frt. The frt is mainly famus fr Teen Darwaza which was the entry t Maidan Shah. Ahmedabad Bhadra Frt is lcated in Ahmedabad which is the largest city f Gujarat and seventh largest city f India. Bhadra Frt is lcated n the Jijabai Marg in Ahmedabad and is cnsidered t be ne f the largest frts f India. Ahmedabad was ruled by varius dynasties like Muzaffarid dynasty, Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Marathas, and the British. Visiting Hurs Bhadra Frt is pened fr the public frm 9am till 5pm. 5 2. Bhadra Frt Histry Bhadra Frt Bhadra Frt is lcated in Ahmedabad and was built in 1411AD by Sultan Ahmad Shah. The frt had many temples, msques palaces, and ther structures. The frt was named s because f the presence f Bhadra Kali temple built during the reign f the Marathas. It is als said that Sultan Ahmad Shah built the Bhadra gate fr entering the frt and due t this, the frt is called Bhadra frt. Bhadra Frt under Gujarat Sultanate Ahmad Shah I built the Bhadra Frt after establishing Muzaffarid dynasty in Karnavati. He renamed the city as Ahmedabad. The frt is als knwn as Arak frt and is built n the banks f the Sabarmati River. The frt cvers an area f arund 43 acres. Bhadra Frt under Mughals Bhadra frt was gverned by arund 60 gvernrs f Mughals. Later Mughal Emperrs Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurungzeb ruled Ahmedabad. A gvernr f Mughal Empire named Azam Khan built Azam Khan Sarai fr travellers t take rest. Bhadra Frt under Marathas Peshwa and Gaekwad jintly ended Mughal rule and established Maratha Empire in The British defeated the Marathas in the war held between 1775 and 1782 but they gave back the frt after signing a treaty with the Marathas. 4

7 Bhadra Frt 3. Bhadra Frt Architecture and Design The ttal area f the frt is arund 43 acres which included 14 circular structures, msques, palaces and many ther structures. Nw sme f the parts have been remved and currently the frt lks like incmplete Manek Burj. The frt was built n the basis f Islamic architecture as it has arches, balcnies and lattice wrk. Bhadra Frt Gates There are eight gates in frt ut f which three are big gates, three are mid-sized, and tw are small gates. In 1545, the frt was ccupied due t urban develpment s Mahmud Begada built a new frt. The uter wall f the new frt had the circumference f 10km. The number f gates were 12 whereas the number f bastins were 189. The main entrance was knwn as Piran Pir Darwaza als knwn as Bhadra Darwaza. At the nrth f the frt, there is anther main gate called Lal Darwaza and Bhadra Kali temple is situated utside this gate. Ganesh Bari is the third gate lcated at the suthwest. The tw gates n the west are Baradari Darwaza and Ram Darwaza. Ahmad Shah Msque Ahmad Shah msque was built by Ahmad Shah in 1414AD. The msque was used by the ryal peple fr ffering prayers. The uter wall f the msque is plain having pinted arches. 6

Maidan Shah Maidan Shah was an pen space lcated n the east side f the frt. There is a lng and brad square having palm, date, citrn, and range trees. This space was used fr ryal prcessins and pl sprt. Teen Darwaza Teen Darwaza was built by Ahmad Shah I in Teen Darwaza r triple dr was an entrance t the frt that led t Maidan Shah. It is called teen darwaza due t three arches which are 25-feet high. The curtyard r maidan shah had a funtain alng with a raised terrace in the center. 7

10 Bhadra Frt Bhadra Kali temple During the Maratha reign, a rm f Azam Khan Sarai was changed int Bhadra Kali temple. The temple includes a black statue f Gddess Kali with fur hands. There is a legend which says that there was a watchman named Siddique Ktwal wh saw Gddess Laxmi. The watchman asked her nt t leave the frt unless he gets the king s permissin. Ktwal beheaded himself s that the gddess remain in the city and the city becmes wealthy. 9
