But the disciples tried t keep the children frm Jesus. Children can certainly relate t being tld nt t d smething. As yu teach this week s lessn, help yur children imagine hw the children in the Bible stry must have felt when they were nt allwed t see Jesus. When the disciples attempted t discurage parents frm bringing their children t see Jesus, they weren t intentinally being mean t children. They were acting in a way cnsistent with the expectatins f the time and the scial nrms. At the time Jesus lived, children were nt viewed as persns in their wn right. Children were cnsidered t be their father s prperty. Thus, children shuld nt be allwed t disturb Jesus while he was teaching. When Jesus reprimanded the disciples fr keeping the children away, he made a clear statement that access t him and t Gd s lve was fr everyne. All are welcme in Gd s kingdm. By blessing the children, Jesus demnstrated that children were full members in Gd s family. ASK: Hw d yu think the children in the stry felt when they met Jesus? Interact with the Bible Stry Distribute Bible Stry Sheets (Sessin 5). Assign the part f Narratr and present Jesus and the Children. Say the Bible Verse Befre class: Display Pster: Unit 1 Bible Verse (Class Kit pp. 14 & 19). Hw d yu make smene feel welcme? SAY: Let s make a welcme banner t welcme peple t ur church. Lead children t write n the banner Welcme. Then invite them t decrate the banner. TIP: Hang banner in yur building where it is visible t thers and visitrs. OR B Child f Gd Bracelets (Art) Befre class: Cut strips f clred cnstructin paper, lng enugh t g arund a child s wrist. Obtain clear packing tape. Let each child chse a paper strip. Encurage them t write n the strip: I am a child f Gd. Direct children t decrate bracelets. Then cver paper strips with clear tape. Secure bracelets n wrists f thse children wh desire t wear them. SAY: Yu can wear yur bracelet as a reminder that yu are a special child f Gd! ASK: In what ways can yu help, include, and welcme yunger children? Let children determine ways they can welcme ther children, such as being a helper n the playgrund, sharing, sitting with yunger children in wrship, and s frth. Obtain hand twel. Demnstrate slwly dipping yur hand int the water and letting water drip frm yur fingers. Invite children, ne at a time, t gently submerge their fingers.
