1 Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment (CLPD) A Segment f the Living and Leading by Faith Catechist Frmatin Prgram f the Rman Cathlic Dicese f Brklyn Intrductin The Bishps f the United States in the Natinal Directry fr Catechesis maintain that, The single mst critical factr in an effective parish catechetical prgram is the leadership f a prfessinally trained parish catechetical leader. They g n t say that a catechetical leader s need fr systematic training and study shuld nt be minimized and that catechetical leaders shuld cntinue their persnal, spiritual, and prfessinal develpment and participate in dicesan prgrams f in-service training and frmatin, catechetical institutes, cnventins, retreats, and accredited prgrams. (NDC, 54.5) Onging training and frmatin f catechetical leaders is a pririty f the Dicesan Office f Faith Frmatin. The Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment (CLPD) prgram utlined here prvides the catechetical leader with a map fr persnal, spiritual, and prfessinal develpment. Gal and Scpe The tw-fld gal f the Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment prgram is t prvide avenues f nging frmatin and supprt fr catechetical leaders, and t engage the participatin f each catechetical leader in prfessinal develpment. A catechetical leader is ne wh prvides fr the teaching f the faith in an rganic and systematic way in rder t lead thers t Christ and frm them in a Cathlic Christian way f knwing and acting. Amng the varius and intertwined avenues f frmatin fr this task are advanced studies in thelgy, Scripture, liturgy, catechesis and catechetical methdlgy, educatinal psychlgy and thery, and administratin as well as practical catechetical experience with adults, yuth and children. Every catechist and catechetical leader in the Rman Cathlic Dicese f Brklyn is required by dicesan plicy t participate in at least ten hurs f faith frmatin each year. This includes all Catechetical Leaders wh have a Master s degree r abve in Thelgy, Religius Studies, r a related field frm an accredited Cathlic Cllege. The Catechetical Leader Cnvcatins (three each year, 2 hurs each) and the Catechetical Leader Retreat (annually, 6 hurs) are required f all and prvide nging prfessinal develpment. Other prfessinal develpment pprtunities are prmted by the Office f Faith Frmatin and ther ffices f the Dicese. These are listed in Appendix A. Academic curse wrk and nline prgrams apprved by the Dicesan Directr f Faith Frmatin are als recmmended. The specific prgrams yu select will depend n yur ministry and previus prfessinal develpment. The fllwing is an utline f prerequisites and pssible pints f entry int the Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment prgram. 1. A Special Chrt fr all catechetical leaders wh are new t their psitin will be ffered each catechetical year. 2. The Initial Frmatin cmpnent f the Living and Leading by Faith Catechist Frmatin Prgram (50 hurs) is a pre-requisite t receiving the Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment Certificate f Cmpletin. The Initial Frmatin cmpnent may be cmpleted simultaneusly with the requirements fr the Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment Certificate f Cmpletin utlined in Appendix A. A prfessinal certificate, BA, MA, r ther advanced degree in Thelgy, Religius Studies, r a related field fulfills this pre-requisite. 3. Prfessinal Certificates An Academic Certificate in Thelgy, Religius Studies, r a related field frm an accredited Cathlic Cllege Living and Leading by Faith Onging r Enrichment Certificate f Cmpletin (50 hurs) Thse wh have ne f these certificates may select frm the prgrams in Appendix A t cmplete the required 10 hurs f inservice each year. N matter where yu are alng the line f prfessinal develpment as described in numbers 3-6 abve, a Catechetical Leader Prfessinal Develpment Certificate f Cmpletin will be awarded t yu after successful cmpletin f fifty hurs f prfessinal develpment in yur area f ministry within a fur year perid. See Appendix A fr a list f prgrams leading t a Certificate f Cmpletin. What is the Schedule? Curses and wrkshps will be ffered n varius days, at varius times, and in varius lcatins thrughut the year. The Living and Leading by Faith schedule is psted tw times each year in the Living and Leading by Faith flder n DiNet and at What is the cst? The prgrams in Appendix A cst the same as Living and Leading by Faith curses and wrkshps: $25.00 fr ten hur curses $10.00 fr five hur curses $5.00 fr tw and ne-half hur curses In sme cases, small grants allw us t ffer discunted r free curses and wrkshps.
