Bijapur The city f Bijapur was established by Kalyani Chalukyas during their ruling perid between 10 th and 11 th centuries AD and the city was called Vijaypura. Later, the city came under the rule f Bahmani kingdm wh ruled fr almst 200 years. The city was als ruled by the kings f Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Marathas and British. 3

7 2. Bijapur Frt Histry Bijapur Frt The city f Bijapur was first ruled by Kalyani Chalukyas during the perid f 10 th and 11 th centuries and the city was knwn as Vijaypura. In 13 th century, the kings f Khilji dynasty ruled the city. The rulers f Bahmani sultanate f Gulbarga captured Bijapur in 1347AD and the city was renamed as Bijapur. Bijapur Frt under Yusuf Adil Shah Yusuf Adil Shah was the sn f Sultan f Turkey and was purchased by Mahmud Gavan, prime minister f Bidar. At that time Bidar was ruled by Sultan Muhammad III. Yusuf shwed bravery and lyalty t prtect the sultanate and s he was given the gvernrship f Bijapur. Yusuf built Arkilla frt r Bijapur Frt and Farukh Mahal whse designers were brught frm Persia, Turkey, and Rme. Later, Bahmani kingdm was divided int five small kingdms and Bijapur was ne f them. Seeking the pprtunity, Yusuf declared himself the ruler f Bijapur and established Adil Shahi dynasty. Bijapur Frt under Ibrahim Adil Shah Ibrahim Adil Shah succeeded Yusuf Adil Shah in Ibrahim was a minr when his father died s his mther ruled the kingdm and fught the enemies wh wanted t capture Bijapur. Ibrahim built Jami masjid within the frt. Bijapur Frt under Ali Adil Shah I Ali Adil Shah I succeeded Ibrahim Adil Shah. He cnstructed his tmb called Ali Ruza alng with Gagan Mahal and Chand Bawdi. Ali als did nt have a sn s his nephew Ibrahim II succeeded. Since Ibrahim was a minr s the kingdm was prtected by Chand Bibi. 6

8 Bijapur Frt Bijapur Frt under Ibrahim II Ibrahim II was a gd ruler wh created harmny between Hindus and Muslims and between Shia and Sunni Muslims. That s the reasn the king came t be knwn as Jagadguru Badshah. The king built many temples and he was als the builder f Gl Gumbaz. A gun was develped during his reign whse length is 4.45m. 9 Bijapur Frt Adil Shah II was the adpted sn and successr f Ibrahim II. Due t the prblem f successrship internally, the kingdm was weakened. This led t the defeat f Afzal Khan by Maratha ruler Shivaji wh plundered the city 11 times. Shivaji signed a treaty t stp the capturing f Karnataka. After his death, Aurangzeb attacked and captured Bijapur in

10 3. Bijapur Frt Architecture Bijapur Frt Bijapur frt is a very big frt with many structures inside. The frt was built in 1565 by the funder f the Adil Shahi dynasty. There are 96 bastins f varius designs within the frt. Spaces were prvided within the bastins t drp stnes r cannns. These spaces are knwn as crenulatins and machiclatins. There are five main gates f the frt and each has ten bastins. A mat surrunds the frt which was made s that enemy culd nt enter the frt. The mat has the width f 50 feet. Gates f the Frt The frt can be entered thrugh five gates which are lcated in every directin. The gates with their directins are as fllws: Makka gate in the west Shahpur gate in the nrthwest Bahmani gate in the nrth Allahpur gate in the east Fateh gate in the sutheast 9

11 Bijapur Frt Jamia Masjid Jamia Masjid is lcated in the sutheast directin f the frt. The cnstructin f the msque was started in 1565 but culd nt be cmpleted. The arcaded prayer hall has aisles having a dme with nine bays. The aisles are supprted n pillars. The msque als has a large curtyard with water tank. The msque is als knwn as Jumma Masjid as khutba r speech related Islamic traditins is read n every Friday. The area cvered by the msque is 10810m 2. The rectangular-shaped msque has the dimensins f 170m x 70m. There are nine arches and five arches are within them that divide the msque int 45 cmpartments. There are 2250 tiles which are laid in the frm f a prayer mat. The tiles were cnstructed by Aurungzeb. Ibrahim Rauza r Ibrahim Tmb Ibrahim Rauza was built in 1627 and has the graves f Ibrahim Adil Shah II and Queen Taj Sultana, his wife. The tmb is built in the frm f twin buildings with carvings. Malik Sandal, the architect f this tmb, is als buried here. There is a msque and a garden inside the tmb that face each ther. 10

12 Bijapur Frt The size f the garden is abut 140m 2. The ceiling f the tmb is divided int nine squares whse sides are curved. There are fur minarets, ne n each crner f the tmb. Turists can reach the tmb thrugh the steps prvided belw the platfrm n which the tmb is situated. The msque in the tmb has gateways made up f teak wd and are decrated with metal strips. Mehtar Mahal Mehtar Mahal was cnstructed in 1620 whse gate is built in Ind-Saracenic style. There is a msque inside the mahal called Mehtar Msque which has three streys. The minarets f the mahal are carved with rws f swans and birds. The mahal has flat rf and the minarets have runded tps. 11

13 Bijapur Frt Barakaman Barakaman was built in 1672 as a tmb fr Ali Rza. Previusly, the structure was knwn as Ali Rza but later its name was changed t Barakaman by Shah Nawab Khan. Barakaman has 12 arches and was built during the reign f Shah Nawab Khan. The structure was built n a raised platfrm and cvers an area f 66m 2. The arches were built by using black basaltic stne. Ali Rza, his queens and sme ther ladies are buried in the tmb. 12

14 Bijapur Frt Malik-e-Maidan Malik-e-Maidan was cnstructed by Ibrahim Adil Shah II after the battle f Talikta. The structure is als knwn as Burj-e-Sherz. It has a large cannn having length f 4.45m and diameter f 1.5m. The weight f the cannn is 55 tnnes. The gun remains cl even during summers and prduces sund when tapped. 13

Asar Mahal Asar Mahal is can be fund n the east f the citadel and was built in The palace is cnnected t the frt thrugh a bridge. It was als used as a curt s it was called Dad Mahal. The diameter f the dme is arund 124 feet and is cnsidered as the secnd largest dme in the wrld. There are fur minarets, ne each at the crner and each minaret has eight streys. If the dme is viewed frm inside, there is a balcny with a gallery and if smene speaks r a sund is prduced, it eches seven times. The flr f the tmb has the size f 1700m 2 while its diameter f the tmb is 38m. The height f the tmb is 51m. Almatti Dam Bijapur is situated n Krishna river and n the same river, Almatti dam was cnstructed. The dam prvides water t Bagalkt, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur, and Kppal. 23 Bijapur Frt Jd Gumbaz Jd Gumbaz is a tmb with tw dmes. The tmb was made in the memry f Khan Muhammad, and Abdul Razzaq Qadiri. The tmb is situated near Mecca gate and is als knwn as Tw Sisters. The mnument was built in 1687 and is als knwn as the dargah f Abdul Razzaq Qadiri. 22

24 Bijapur Frt Kudalasangama Kudalasangama is a place f pilgrimage and belngs t the peple f Lingayath faith. The pilgrimage center is situated n the cnfluence f Krishna and Ghatprabha rivers. The gvernment has prvided funds t develp the pilgrimage center. Uppali Buruz Uppali Buruz is an 80 feet high twer built by Hyder Khan in 1584AD. The structure is spherical in shape and has steps made up f stnes. The structure includes guns, war materials, water strage strictures, and ther things.
