Easter 2012 The Lrd is Risen! On the week f Passver each year, the Christian church celebrates the ccasin f Christ s passin, death and three days later His resurrectin We take a Sunday t acknwledge the Lrd s death and resurrectin because it truly is the fundatin f ur faith Withut Christ s death, we have n hpe f frgiveness fr ur sins And withut His resurrectin, we have n reasn t believe that His prmises f eternal life can be trusted But almst 2,000 years ag, Jesus, Gd in the frm f Man, vluntarily placed Himself n a Rman crss reserved fr criminals and traitrs and permitted the Rmans t crucify Him Jesus Himself talk this truth t the disciples when He appeared t them after His resurrectin Luke 24:44 Nw He said t them, These are My wrds which I spke t yu while I was still with yu, that all things which are written abut Me in the Law f Mses and the Prphets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. Luke 24:45 Then He pened their minds t understand the Scriptures, Luke 24:46 and He said t them, Thus it is written, that the Christ wuld suffer and rise again frm the dead the third day, Many f us remember this accunt frm the reciting a cnfessin f faith cmmn t many churches Jesus suffered, died and was buried...n the third day He rse again... The stryline is simple and yet prfund Gd the Sn vluntarily left His place f authrity and hnr t becme man s that He culd suffer and die in ur place The Just dying fr the unjust We call this prpitiatin: the sacrifice f Christ s life in place f urs 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 All f us can marvel at Gd s mercy and grace, and we can accept the ntin f prpitiatin withut much questin because it is simple But fr sme Christians, the cncept f prpitiatin leaves a few unanswered questins Yu ve prbably heard it said that there is n such thing as a dumb questin, nly dumb peple wh miss an pprtunity t learn because they dn t ask This is exactly my philsphy...especially in the cntext f ur faith and pursuing study f Gd s wrd There are n wrng questins, There are n tpics that are ff limit There is n reasn t hesitate in pursuing answers when ur gal is grw in the grace and knwledge f Jesus Christ A little girl asked her father, "Hw did the human race cme abut?" The father answered: "Gd made Adam and Eve and they had children and s all mankind was made." Tw days later she asks her mther the same questin. The mther answered: "Many years ag there were mnkeys, and we develped frm them." The cnfused girl returns t her father and says: "Dad, hw is it pssible that yu tld me that the human race was created by Gd and Mama says we develped frm mnkeys?" The father answers: "Well dear, it is very simple. I tld yu abut the rigin f my side f the family, and yur mther tld yu abut hers." There are n dumb questins, but I didn t say there are n dumb answers! Tday, we celebrate Christ s prpitiatin fr us, s I wanted t explre tw questins I frequently receive cncerning the cncept First, hw des prpitiatin actually wrk? Hw can Christ s life and death save us frm Gd s wrath and frm the penalty f Hell? Hw can ne man stand in the place fr s many? And if Christ is taking ur place in death, why desn t He have t spend eternity in Hell? Thse wh die withut having placed their faith in Christ s sacrifice will suffer eternal separatin frm Gd 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 S if Christ died in ur place, why did He spend nly three days in Hell? We ll begin with the basic wrkings f prpitiatin The Apstle Jhn wrte in 1Jhn 4:9-10 1Jhn 4:9 By this the lve f Gd was manifested in us, that Gd has sent His nly begtten Sn int the wrld s that we might live thrugh Him. 1Jhn 4:10 In this is lve, nt that we lved Gd, but that He lved us and sent His Sn t be the prpitiatin fr ur sins. Gd s lve fr His children is best seen in His willingness t send His Sn t be a prpitiatin - a sacrifice in ur place - because f ur sins All f us have sin, we all have been brn with a nature that is sinful I m always amused by the debate ver whether we are naturally gd r bad Are we brn inherently gd but then the wrld turns us bad? Or are we - as the Bible says - brn sinful and crrupt frm the start, but by Gd s grace we can be made gd I m amused because anyne wh ha evers raised a tw-year ld knws the answer t that questin A simple way t understand the nature f sin is t remember that men are nt sinners because we make a decisin at sme pint in life t sin On the cntrary, we act in sin because we were brn sinners with a sin nature We begin life with a sin nature that is ffensive t Gd and leads us t act in ways cntrary t Gd s wrd This is why the Bible says that we cannt hpe t restre ur relatinship t a Hly and Just Gd n the basis f ur gd wrks N amunt f gd wrks can crrect ur sin nature and make us right with Gd 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 One f us may accmplish mre gd wrks than anther But we re striving fr an impssible result It s like tw men thrwing rcks at the nrth ple One f them might thrw farther than the ther, but they bth will fall way shrt f the mark The small difference in perfrmance makes n difference in the larger picture Gd s standard fr entrance int Heaven is perfectin, a test we fail n the day f ur birth That s why Paul says in Rmans 3:23 that all have sinned and fall shrt f the glry f Gd Our sin nature leaves us permanently in debt and expecting nly eternal judgment As Paul tells us Eph. 2:1 And yu were dead in yur trespasses and sins, Eph. 2:2 in which yu frmerly walked accrding t the curse f this wrld, accrding t the prince f the pwer f the air, f the spirit that is nw wrking in the sns f disbedience. Eph. 2:3 Amng them we t all frmerly lived in the lusts f ur flesh, indulging the desires f the flesh and f the mind, and were by nature children f wrath, even as the rest. Paul says that the church used t be children f wrath by their very nature This is the state f every persn frm the day we are brn We enter the wrld as creatures built n a genetic pattern, the pattern give t us by ur parents As the Lin King mvie wuld say, sme f us cme frm the shallw end f the gene pl Each us inherit wh we are in the flesh frm ur parents, but the Bible tells us that we are als inheriting the a spiritual nature 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 This spiritual nature is ne that traces back t the first man, Adam His sinful nature has been passed dwn as well We can t escape it...but we can be rescued frm it But Ntice that Paul tells the Ephesian church that they frmerly walked in this state f disbedience and wrath? Hw did they escape Gd s wrath In Eph 2, Paul ges further t say: Eph. 2:4 But Gd, being rich in mercy, because f His great lve with which He lved us, Eph. 2:5 even when we were dead in ur transgressins, made us alive tgether with Christ ( by grace yu have been saved), Eph. 2:6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Eph. 2:7 s that in the ages t cme He might shw the surpassing riches f His grace in kindness tward us in Christ Jesus. Eph. 2:8 Fr by grace yu have been saved thrugh faith; and that nt f yurselves, it is the gift f Gd; Eph. 2:9 nt as a result f wrks, s that n ne may bast. While ur gd wrks cannt repair ur separatin frm Gd, the Gd News f Easter is that Gd made a way pssible fr us thrugh Christ s death By His grace, He saved us thrugh ur faith in that sacrifice Our faith is that Christ s death in ur place was an acceptable sacrifice n behalf f ur sins and it pleased the Father Christ bre the wrath f Gd in ur place And Gd credits thse wh believe with Christ s righteusness And at the pint f faith, Gd replaces ur sin nature with a new nature We are given the Spirit f Gd, which leaves us with a new nature that is pleasing t Gd Rm. 8:14 Fr all wh are being led by the Spirit f Gd, these are sns f Gd. Rm. 8:15 Fr yu have nt received a spirit f slavery leading t fear again, but yu have received a spirit f adptin as sns by which we cry ut, Abba! Father! 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 Rm. 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with ur spirit that we are children f Gd, Rm. 8:17 and if children, heirs als, heirs f Gd and fellw heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him s that we may als be glrified with Him. But hw can the death f ne man accmplish s much fr s many? Paul explains that mystery in Rmans 5 Rm. 5:12 Therefre, just as thrugh ne man sin entered int the wrld, and death thrugh sin, and s death spread t all men, because all sinned Paul reminds us f a simple principle f life: we all die The death rate fr all human beings is 100% And the BIble teaches that we all suffer the penalty f physical death because f the sin f ne man, Adam Adam s sin spread t all men, in the sense that we inherited his nature And since we inherited his nature, we als inherited his penalty f death Therefre, all arund us we see the reality that ne man s actins can cndemn the entire human race S Paul explains that the slutin Gd ffers thrugh Christ wrks in a similar manner Christ s sacrifice was a single act f righteusness that satisfied Gd s wrath fr sin And nw Gd is willing t credit us with that payment Rm. 5:15 But the free gift is nt like the transgressin. Fr if by the transgressin f the ne the many died, much mre did the grace f Gd and the gift by the grace f the ne Man, Jesus Christ, abund t the many. Rm. 5:18 S then as thrugh ne transgressin there resulted cndemnatin t all men, even s thrugh ne act f righteusness there resulted justificatin f life t all men. Rm. 5:19 Fr as thrugh the ne man s disbedience the many were made sinners, even s thrugh the bedience f the One the many will be made righteus Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 The principle f prpitiatin in Scripture is based a spiritual exchange Christ lived a sinless life because He wasn t brn f Adam, He was cnceived by the Hly Spirit S He didn t inherit a sin nature Having died sinless, His death was nt payment fr His wn sin Therefre, it culd becme a payment acceptable t the Father fr thers Then by ur faith, Gd assigns us credit fr Christ s sinless life while assigning Christ the wrath we deserved Rm. 5:6 Fr while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died fr the ungdly. Rm. 5:7 Fr ne will hardly die fr a righteus man; thugh perhaps fr the gd man smene wuld dare even t die. Rm. 5:8 But Gd demnstrates His wn lve tward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died fr us. S we understand the great exchange f prpitiatin: Christ std in my place receiving the wrath f Gd while I receive His righteusness credited t me But if Jesus tk my place in receiving Gd s wrath fr sin, why did Jesus rise three days later and ascend t the Father in Heaven? Shuldn t Jesus need t spend an eternity in Hell fr my sin, since that s the penalty I wuld have paid? The questin itself makes a false assumptin abut the purpse f Hell The questin assumes that men spend eternity in Hell fr the same reasn cnvicts g t prisn: t pay ff a debt t sciety This is a wrng assumptin Cnvicts may spend time in prisn paying ff a debt but that s nt the purpse fr Hell Remember what we ve learned abut why ur gd wrks cannt save us Gd wrks dn t erase ur sin nature And as lng as ur sin nature remains, we are under cndemnatin 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Easter f 8 And s neither can suffering in Hell change ur sin nature and leads t please the Father The punishment f Hell is eternal because ur nature remain eternally sinful S Christ didn t enter Hell t serve ur time His death n the crss was sufficient by itself t pay the price fr ur sin and set us free frm any penalty And the righteusness f His life was credited t us by faith and the depsit f His Spirit in us became ur pprtunity t please the Father S why did Christ spend anytime in the grave? Because His missin included preaching t thse spirits in Hell and escrting the OT saints wh were held in Abraham s bsm awaited Christ s resurrectin Eph. 4:8 Therefre it says, ı WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, ı AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN. Eph. 4:9 (Nw this expressin, He ascended, what des it mean except that He als had descended int the lwer parts f the earth? Eph. 4:10 He wh descended is Himself als He wh ascended far abve all the heavens, s that He might fill all things.) When Christ ascended int Heaven, He left behind gifts fr men, the spiritual gifts given t believers And he escrted a hst f captives up t Heaven The OT believers wh died prir t Christ s sacrifice culdn t enter Heaven prir t Christ s sacrifice S Luke 16 Jesus tells us they were kept in waiting in a place f cmfrt, called Abrahams bsm Upn Christ s death and resurrectin, He retrieved the OT saints and brught them int Heaven upn HIs ascensin We wh believe are assured f the same jurney, t spend an eternity with Christ because He was ur prpitiatin by grace, thrugh faith 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright ntice, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
