Muhammad Ghri rdered that a msque shuld be built within 60 hurs s that he can ffer prayers. S the wrkers tried but culd nt cmplete the task. But they were able t build screen wall where Mhammad Ghri culd ffer prayers. Ajmer Ajmer is ne f the ppular cities f Rajasthan due t the presence f the dargah f Sufi saint Khwaja Minuddin Chishti. It is nt cnfirmed but histry says that the city was funded either by Ajayraja I r Ajayraja II wh belnged t Shakambhari Chahaman dynasty. Besides the dargah, anther pilgrimage site is Pushkar which is 10km away frm Ajmer. 3

The sultan rdered the msque t be built within 60 hurs and the wrkers wrked day and night but were nly able t cnstruct a screen wall s that the sultan culd ffer his prayers. Adhai Din ka Jhnpra under Chauhan Dynasty During the perid f Chauhan dynasty, there was a Sanskrit cllege built by Vigraharaja IV, als knwn as Visaladeva, wh belnged t Shakambhari Chahaman r Chauhan dynasty. The cllege was built in square shape and a dme-shaped pavilin was cnstructed n each crner f the building. A temple was als there that was dedicated t Gddess Sarasvati. The cnstructin f the building includes the features f Hindu and Jain architecture. Sme histrians say that the msque was built by the materials used after the destructin f sme ld and abandned Hindu Temples. Others say that the Sanskrit cllege was a cllege f the Jains. The lcal peple say that Seth Viramdeva cnstructed the cllege t celebrate Panch Kalyanaka. The msque was cnstructed after the defeat f Prithvi Raj Chauhan III by Mhammad Ghri in the secnd battle f Tarain. Adhai Din ka Jhnpra under Delhi Sultanate After defeating Prithvi Raj Chauhan III, nce Mhammad Ghri was passing by Ajmer and saw many temples s he rdered his slave named Qutbuddin Aibak t cnstruct a msque s that he can ffer prayers. The sultan als rdered that the msque has t be built within tw and a half days. 6

8 Adhai Din ka Jhnpra The wrkers wrked hard and were able t cnstruct a screen wall where the sultan culd ffer his prayers. The msque was cmpleted in 1199 accrding t an inscriptin. Iltumish, the successr f Qutbuddin Aibak, built a screened wall with arches and inscriptins n it. The inscriptins have the name f Iltumish and the supervisr named Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-arid. Histry behind the Name The name f the msque is Adhai Din ka Jhnpra which means shed f tw and a half day. There are many things related t the name f the msque. Accrding t a legend, the life f a human being is tw and a half day n earth. Histrians say that there was a fair used t be held fr tw and a half days in ancient times. Other assumptins say that during the Maratha era, fakirs came t celebrate urs and s the msque was started being called jhnpra. Since the urs was held fr tw and a half days, s the msque was named as adhai din ka jhnpra. 7

9 Adhai Din ka Jhnpra 3. Adhai din ka Jhnpra Architecture Adhai Din ka Jhnpra is ne f the ldest msque in India that was built n the basis f Ind-Islamic architecture. Mhammad Ghri rdered the cnstructin f the msque which was designed by Abu Bakr f Herat wh came with the Sultan. Each side f the building has the height f 259 feet. Peple can enter the msque frm suthern and eastern gates. Exterir Structure f the Msque Ttal number f pillars in the msque were 344 and the actual building had 124 pillars ut f which 92 were n the eastern side and 64 were n the ther sides. Iltumish als built a huge screen whse arches were built by using yellw limestne. There are seven arches ut f which the largest ne has the height f 60 feet while thers are smaller nes. There are small panels in the arch t pass sunlight. The arches als have the verses f the Hly Quran. Alng with this, there are inscriptins written in Kufic and Tughra script. Interir Structure f the Msque The measurement f the interir prtin is 200 feet x 175 feet. The design f the pillars are similar t the temples f Hindus and Jains. Histrians say that many pillars belnged t Hindu and Jain temples but sme were cnstructed by the Muslim rulers. The ceilings f the msque are als a cmbinatin f Hindu and Islamic architecture. 8

16 Adhai Din ka Jhnpra The temple mainly belngs t Digambara Jains and is dedicated t Lrd Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara f Jains. The cnstructin f the temple was started in 1864 and Lrd Rishabhdev s image was installed in Ana Sagar Lake Ana Sagar Lake was built by the grandfather f Prithvi Raj Chauhan whse name was Amraja, als called Ana. The lake cvers an area f 13km. The pavilins, knwn as Baradari, were cnstructed by Shah Jahan in There is a garden called Daulat Bagh which was cnstructed by Jahangir. 15

17 Adhai Din ka Jhnpra Shah Jahan s Msque Shah Jahan s Msque in Ajmer lies within the precincts f the dargah f Khwaja Minuddin Chishti. Shah Jahan built this msque due t a vw which he has taken during the Mewar campaign. The dimensins f the msque is 148 feet x 25 feet. The msque was built by using white marble and there are five entrances frm where peple can enter the msque. The main area where prayer is ffered is built n a platfrm where peple can g thrugh a staircase. Akbar s Palace Akbar s Palace is a beautiful mnument in Ajmer which was built in 1570AD. Akbar frequently visited Ajmer fr pilgrimage s he built the palace as a residence fr himself. The palace was built in such a way that the attackers culd nt enter the palace and attack the persns inside. 16
