4 1. Aihle Overview Aihle The temples in Aihle were built during the perid f Chalukyas. It has 125 temples which belng t the fllwers f Hinduism and Jainism. The village has nt yet been listed in the UNESCO Wrld Heritage sites. Many turists cme t visit the temples and view different gds and gddesses established in the temples. Bagalkt Bagalkt is ne f the majr twns which is cnnected t many cities in India thrugh rad and rail. Previusly the twn was knwn as Bagadige. Bhajantries were given the twn by Ravana the king f Lanka. The main entrance t the twn was knwn as Shirr Agasi. The twn was later named as Bagalkt. It was ruled by the rulers f many dynasties and finally it came under British. 3

7 2. Aihle Histry Aihle The ld name f Aihle was Ayyavle and Aryapura. Chalukya kings built 125 temples here and made the place their capital. Badami Chalukyas Chalukyas ruled mst f the Suthern part f India frm 543 t 753. They declared their independence frm the rulers f Kadamba dynasty. The earlier Chalukyas were knwn as Badami Chalukyas and Pulakeshin II was the mst ppular king f his time. After the death f Pulakeshin II, Eastern Chalukyas made their independent kingdm. Rashtrakuta tried t win ver the Badami Chalukyas but the descendants f Chalukyas ver pwered them. Aihle under Pulakeshin I Pulakeshin I changed his capital t Badami which is nearby Aihle. On the basis f the temples cnstructed in Aihle, Chalukya kings als built temples in Pattadakal. The cnstructin f the temples in Aihle was started in 5 th century which went t 12 th century. Aihle under Pulakeshin II Pulakeshin II ruled frm 610 t 642AD and was a Vaishnav. Ravikriti was the curt pet f Pulakeshin II wh wrte inscriptins related t the king. The language used t write the inscriptin is Sanskrit based n Kannada script. The inscriptin describes the victry f Pulakeshin II ver Harsha Vardhana. Pulakeshin II als had cnflict with the Pallavan kings. 6

8 Aihle Legend regarding Aihle There is a legend regarding Aihle accrding t which Rishi Parshuram killed the killer f his father and came t the river t wash his hands and the weapn. Due t this the water f the river turned red. A lady saw this and screamed Ayy Hle which meant Oh n! Bld! S the place came t be knwn as Aihle. 7

9 3. Aihle Hindu Temples Aihle Aihle has a grup f temples built by the rulers f Chalukya dynasty. The cnstructin f the temples was based n early Hindu architecture. The artisans f the perid cut the rcks in rder t build the temples. The twers f the temples were curved with blind arch which was inherited frm nrth Indian style. The walls were plastered and panels were inserted in them. Anther style inherited by Chalukyas was the Deccan style which includes balcny seating, slping rfs, carved clumns and ther things. All these styles were cmbined and came t be knwn as Chalukya style. There are many Hindu temples which were built during the Chalukya perid. Sme f them are as fllws: Durga Temple Durga Temple als knwn as Frtress Temple is well-planned and has adisthana and a twer. The adisthana was highly mulded. The temple has a crridr arund it which is pillared and envelpes the shrine. Lad Khan Temple The Lad Khan temple has tw matapas which lks like Shiva Linga. These mantapas are Mukhamantapa and Sabhamantapa. The mukhmantapa rests n twelve pillars while the pillars n which the sabhamantapa rests are arranged in tw cncentric squares. 8

10 Aihle The temple has lattice style windws and carved walls with flral designs. The temple was named s because a general named Lad Khan lived here. Ravana Phadi Cave Ravana Phadi Cave temple was built in sixth century. It has a rectangular shrine with tw mantapas. There is an inner rm where a Shiva Linga is established. There are large figures f Lrd Shiva n the walls which als include dancing Shiva. 9

11 Aihle Huchappayya Temple Huchappayya temple is a Shiva temple built nearby Malaprabha river. The temple has mukhamantapa, a hall, and sanctum. The prch and hall have pillars having carved images f gds with their spuse. The image f Nataraja can be seen n the rf f the temple. Grup f Yeniar Shrines The grup f Yeniar shrines cnsists f eight temples which were built in 12 th century. Each temple has a prch alng with a cella and a hall. The temples were cnstructed n the banks f Malaprabha river. Ramlinga Grup f Temples The main temple in this grup is Ramlinga which is a trikutachala shrine. Out f these three, tw have Shiva Linga and the third has the image f Gddess Parvati. This shrine was built in 11 th century AD. Alng with these there are tw twers called Kadambanagara twers which was a temple frm f architecture funded in 4 th century by Mayurasharma, funder f Kadamba dynasty. Galaganatha Grup f Temples Galaganatha Grup f Temples were built n the banks f Malaprabha river in which the main Shrine is Galaganatha which has the statue f Lrd Shiva. The images f Ganga and Yamuna can be fund at the entrance. Ttal number f temples in this grup is 38 and besides Galaganatha, mst f them are ruined. 10

12 Aihle Suryanarayana Temple The temple has three statues which includes Surya and his wives Usha and Sandhya. All the statues are being drawn by hrses. The height f Surya s statue is 0.6m. There is a fur pillared sanctum alng with a twer f Nagara style. 11

13 Aihle Chakra Gudi and Badigera Gudi Chakra Gudi cnsists f a hall and a sanctum. Alng with these, there is a twer which was built n the basis f rekhanagara style. The temple is suppsed t be built in 9 th century. Badigera Gudi has a prch, hall, cell and a twer. The twer was built in Rekhanagara style. Previusly this temple was a Sun temple. This temple was als built in 9 th century. 12

14 Aihle Ambigera Gudi Grup and Chikkigudi Grup There are three temples in the Ambigera grup f temples. The rekhanagara style twer can be fund n the biggest ne. The temple is suppsed t be built in 10 th century. In the Chikkigudi grup f temples, Chikkigudi is the largest ne having a hall, a cell, and a mantapa. It is suppsed t be built in 7 th century. Huchimalli Gudi Temple Huchimalli Gudi has ardhamantapa which is cnnected t the main shrine. The sanctum f the temple is prasakshinapath and has a twer in rekhanagara style. A new thing intrduced in the temple was Shukanasa r vestibule. 13

15 Aihle Gaudara Gudi Gaudara Gudi was built n the same architecture as the Lad Khan Temple. There are sixteen pillars n the uter wall and the base f the temple is mulded. There is an inscriptin in the temple which is suppsed t be f 8 th century which tells that the temple was knwn as Bhagwati temple. Rachi Gudi Rachi Gudi was cnstructed in 11 th century. It has a trikutachala each having Lrd Shiva s image. The temple stands n a high platfrm and the cells face three different sides. The external walls f the temple has the images f Ganapati, Nataraja, and Vishnu. Huchappayya Matha and Halabasappana Gudi Huchappayya Matha is a temple having a sanctum and a hall. The ceiling has trimurti figure and there is an inscriptin f 1067AD. Halabasappana Gudi is a small temple which has a hall and a sanctum. 14

Kntigudi grup f temples Kntigudi Grup f Temples include fur temples which were cnstructed in 7 th century. The first temple in this grup has trimurty idls n the ceiling f the mantapa. Later many ther things were added t the temple. One f the fur temples cnstructed in 10 th century has been ruined. 15

17 4. Aihle Jain Temples Aihle There are Jain temples in Aihle as sme f the Chalukya rulers were the fllwers f Jainism. Sme f these temples are as fllws: Meguti Jain Temple Meguti Jain temple has never been cmpleted since the starting f its cnstructin. Ravikriti, a curtier f Pulakeshin II, has cnstructed this temple between 634 and 635AD. The temple is dedicated t the 24 th Tirthankara f Jains whse name was Mahavira. Sandstne is used t cnstruct the temple and it is cnsidered as the ldest temple. The temple is cnstructed n a raised platfrm and devtees can reach the temple thrugh a staircase which further leads t the mukhamantapa. There is ne mre shrine n the rf that is abve the main shrine in the hall. There is an entrance frm prtic that leads t a chamber which is divided by a wall. While ging up, devtees will reach the secnd chamber that leads t a large hall and in its center a sanctum is there. An image f Jina can be fund at the back f the sanctum. Anther thing in the temple is the circumambulatry path which cnnects the chambers. Charanthimatha Grup f Temples Charanthimatha grup f temples has three shrines with a prtic s it is knwn as trikutachala. The temple is based n Kalyana Chalukya architecture and was built between 16

Jain Cave Temple If devtees r visitrs cme frm the directin f Badami r Pattadakal, then they can see Jain cave temples at the entrance. The temple is built n the banks f Malaprabha river. 23 6. Aihle Nearby Places Aihle Aihle is a very small twn but has huge number f temples which cunts t arund 125. Besides visiting all these temples, turists can als visit nearby places like Pattadakal, Badami, and Hampi. All these places have temples as well as ther mnuments. Pattadakal Pattadakal is arund 14km away frm Aihle. It is a village where peple can see Chalukya mnuments. Since the place was cnsidered as hly, the crnatin ceremny f the Chalukya kings were held here. The first ruler t be crneted here was Vijayaditya. Chalukyas made the place their capital and built many temples here. The list f sme f them include Jain Narayana Temple Virupaksha Temple Sangameshwara Temple Chandrashekhara Temple Mallikarjuna Temple Kashi Vishwanath Temple The architectural styles used in the cnstructin f temples were Rekha, Nagara, Prasada, and Dravida Vimana. Badami Badami was the regal capital f Chalukyas which was previusly knwn as Vatapi. The place has many temples built during the rule f Chalukya kings. Pulakeshin I funded the city in 540AD. Kirtivarman I and Mangalesha were the sns f Pulakeshin I wh built many temples. 22

24 Aihle Kirtivarman I succeeded his father and after him his brther Mangalesha succeeded. Vatapi was later destryed by Pallavan rulers. The mnuments t be visited in Badami are Cave temples and Badami Frt. Hampi Hampi is ne f the largest cities f India which is lcated in the state f Karnataka. It is lcated at a distance f arund 139km frm Aihle. There are many temples and ther mnuments which the turists can visit. 23
